Die Erfindung betrifft neue substituierte Formamidine,
welche zum Schutz von Materialien vor der zerstörenden Wirkung des ultravioletten Lichtes eingesetzt werden können. Die
neuen Verbindungen können durch die folgende Formel

Es ist bekannt,dass organische Materialien, welche im

ultravioletten Bereich absorbieren, zu anderen organischen Materialien
mit dem Ziel zugegeben werden können, letztere vor den zerstörerischen Eigenschaften des ultravioletten Lichtes
zu schützen. So sind beispielsweise verschiedene Polymere, Plastics, Harze, Kosmetika, Farbstoffe, Pigmente, Lacke, Anstriche,
Textilien etc. der Photodegradation infolge Bestrahlung durch Sonnenlicht bzw. der ultravioletten Bestrahlung unterworfen.
Diese Stoffe können durch Behandlung mit Chemikalien, welche die zerstörerischen Strahlen absorbieren, behandelt werden, wobei
diese Strahlen in relativ harmlose Energie umgewandelt werden.
Bs wurde nun gefunden, dass die neuen Formamidine I hervorragende
lichtabsorbierende Eigenschaften, überraschend hohe Photostabilität und thermische Stabilität aufweisen.
Dies war auf Grund cles Standes der Technik nicht zu. erwarten.
Die neuen Formamidine sind insbesondere als UV-Schutzmittel
geeignet. Es wird weiter unten gezeigt werden, dass sie die ultravioletten Strahlen über einen breiten Bereich des UV-Spektrums
absorbieren, wobei sie insbesondere im Bereich von 280-370 Manometer besonders wirkungsvoll sind. Die Formamidine
sind farblos und in den meisten organischen Lösungsmitteln löslich.
Koch überraschender und bedeutungsvoller ist die ausgezeichnete Resistenz, dieser Formamidine der Formel I
gegenüber Photodegradation und thermischer Zersetzung. So sind diese Formamidine beispielsweise ungefähr 5 bis 3>0mal
resistenter gegenüber Photodegradation als die für denselben Zweck sich im Handel befindlichen 2-Hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone.
Die thermische Stabilität wird auch durch die Tatsache illustriert, dass die meisten der Formamidine bei Temperaturen
von über 2000C destillieren. Gegen das Ende des Destillationsvorganges erreicht das Destillationsgefäss jeweils Temperaturen
von über 3000C, wobei überraschenderweise keine Zersetzung

des Inhaltes auftritt. Diese Stabilität gegenüber thermischer Zersetzung ist besonders wertvoll für Hochtemperaturzwecke,
beispielsweise beim Schmelzen von Plastics.
Die neuen Formamidine sind auf verschiedene Arten synthetisch zugänglich, wobei die geeignetste Herstellungs—
methode jeweils von den benötigten Ausgangsmaterialien abhängt. Die neuen Verbindungen I können beispielsweise

Die bevorzugte Methode zur Herstellung der neuen Formamidine ist die Methode a). Diese benützt als Zwischenprodukte
die neuen Formimidate der allgemeinen Formel II.
Diese neuen Formimidate II können durch "Umsetzung
des entsprechenden 4-Aminobenzoats III mit einem Trialkylorthoformiat
wie folgt erhalten werden;

Diese Reaktion kann beispielsweise durch Erhitzen der Reaktanden auf 800C bis 2000C, insbesondere auf 130 bis
1600C durchgeführt werden. Während der Reaktion wird der
entstehende Alkohol vorzugsweise entfernt. Die Reaktion ist
beendet,"wenn kein Alkohol mehr gebildet wird. Irgend ein Trialkylorthoformiat kann Verwendung finden. Bevorzugt werden

allerdings die handelüblichen Triäthyl- oder Trimethylorthoformiate
eingesetzt.
Die neuen Formamidine I können hierauf durch Umsetzung
der neuen Formimidate II mit substituierten Anilinen der allgemeinen Formel IV gebildet werden; I, II, A, D, R1 und
Rp haben in der folgenden Reaktionsgleichung die obige
Bedeutung:

Die Reaktion kann durchgeführt werden durch Erhitzen der Reaktanden, beispielsweise auf 800C bis 2500C; der
bevorzugte Temperaturbereich beträgt 1700C bis 2100C.
Nach einer bevorzugten Ausflihrungsform wird der während der Reaktion gebildete Alkohol fortlaufend entfernt, und
die Reaktion wird abgebrochen, wenn kein Alkohol mehr gebildet
wird.
Die Aniline IV können nach an sich bekannten Methoden hergestellt werden. Beispielsweise ausgehend von den korrespondierenden
Anilinen V, wie dies im folgenden Formelbild dargestellt ist:

Bei der obigen Reaktionsfolge können die an sich
"bekannten Methoden zur Monoacylierung von primären Aminen,
Alkylierung von Amiden und Hydrolyse der letzteren Anwendung finden.
Weiter können die neuen Formamidine der
.Formel I dadurch erhalten werden, dass man ein Aminobenzoat
III mit einem Formamid der Formel VI in Anwesenheit eines geeigneten Katalysators, wie beispielsweise Phosphorpentachlorid
umsetzt.
Schliesslich werden die Formamidine I auch erhalten durch Alkylierung der Formamidine VII nach an sich "bekannten
Methoden.
Die Details für diese Methoden können den weiter hinten folgenden Ausführungen entnommen werden.
Die ausgeprägte Absorbierung des ultravioletten Lichts, durch die sich die Formamidine I auszeichnen, kann illustriert
werden, indem man die Verbindungen in Isopropanol auflöst und das Spektrum der Lösung, mittels eines registrierenden
TJltraviolett-Spektrophotometers aufnimmt. In der folgender»

Die Photostabilität der IPormamidine wurde anhand
von akzelerierten Strahlungsversuchen nachgewiesen, bei
welchen Lösungen der Pormamidine in Isopropanol in Pyrex-Glasflaschen
der Strahlung einer Hanovid-Lampe [679A'(450 W)]
ausgesetzt wurden. Periodisch wurden diesen Flaschen Aliquots entnommen und spektrophotometriseh untersucht, mit dem Ziel,
die Geschwindigkeit der Photodegradation zu bestimmen. In der Tabelle II sind die erhaltenen Resultate aufgezeichnet,
wobei als Vergleichsprobe ein handelsübliches Hydroxybenzophenon
miteinbezogen wurde.

Im folgenden wird ein Versuch beschrieben,der die Fähigkeit der neuen Formamidine,die Verfärbung von Plastikfilmen
zu verzögern,unter Beweis stellt:
Die Plastikfilme, die 0,4 Gewichtsprozent Formamidin
I enthielten, wurden aus einem Polyvinylchlorid (87%)-Polyvinylacetat
(13%)-Harz hergestellt. Die Filme wurden
der Strahlung einer Hanovia-Lampe 679A (450 Watt) ausgesetzt und periodisch auf Verfärbung untersucht. In der untenstehenden
Tabelle III sind die Resultate dieser Versuche zusammengestellt, wobei die Wertungen 0: keine Verfärbung,
1: Spur Verfärbung, 2: schwache Verfärbung, 3' massige Verfärbung
und 4: starke Verfärbung bedeuten.

Die Fähigkeit der neuen Verbindungen,das Ausbleichen
von Farbstoffen zu verhindern,wird durch den folgenden Versuch
illustriert:
Bs wurden Isopropanollösungen des blauen Farbstoffes
FD&C Blue^l, (H. Kohnstamm & Co.) mit einem Gehalt an 0,01%
des Formamidines der UV-Strahlung einer G.E.Fluorescenz-Lampe

F4OBL ausgesetzt. Die Lösungen wurden periodisch spektrophotometrisch
untersucht,um den Grad der Ausgleichung
festzustellen. Die Resultate sind in der folgenden Tabelle IV zusammengestellt.

a) Aethyl-(4-aethoxycarbonylphenyl)-formimidat.
82,6 g (0,50 Mol) Aethyl-4-aminobenzoat und 148,2 g (1 Mol) Triäthylorthoformiat wurden auf eine Temperatur
von 145° erhitzt,bis 56 ml Aethanol abdestilliert waren. Durch
eine Vakuumdestillation wurde das überschüssige Triäthylorthoformiat
entfernt. Zwecks Herstellung des lOrmimidates wurde der Rückstand destilliert. Siedepunkt des erhaltenes
Produktes 142° (0,1mm), Schmelzpunkt 41-42°.

b) N' - (4-Aethoxycarbonylphenyl) -N-methyl-N-phenylformamidin.
11,0 g (0,05 Mol) Aethyl-N-(4-äthoxycarbonylphenylformimidat
und 5,4 g (0,05 Mol) N-methy!anilin wurden auf
190° erhitzt,bis 1,5 ml Aethanol abdestilliert waren. Das
viskose gelbe OeI wurde mittels einer Eurzwegdestillationskölonne
destilliert, wobei das gewünschte Produkt vom Siedepunkt 188° (0,1 mm Hg) erhalten wurde.

IT = 9,92; Gefunden: G = 72,22; H = 6,34; U = 9,89.

Herstellung von Njli'-bis^-Aethoxycarbonylphenyl)-
E-me thylf ormamidin.
Zu einer gerührten Lösung von N,N'-bis(4-Aethoxycarbonylphenyl)formamidin
(6,8 g, 0,02 Mol) in 50 ml Dimethylformamid wurden 2,0 g Kaliumhydroxyd und 2 ml (0,02 Mol) Dimethylsulfat
gegeben. Die Lösung wurde 12 Stunden gerührt und dann 3 Stunden erhitzt. Das Reaktionsgemische wurde in 100 ml Wasser gegeben
und der entstandene Fiederschlag durch Filtration abgetrennt und getrocknet. Der'Feststoff wurde in 150 ml Benzol aufgeschlämmt.
Unlösliches Material wurde mittels Filtration entfernt und das
Filtrat eingedampft. Der verbleibende Rückstand wurde mit 50 ml Chloroform aufgerührt. Die zurückbleibenden Feststoffe wurden durch
Filtration entfernt. Durch Konzentration des Filtrates erhielt man das gewünschte Produkt vom Siedepunkt 89-91°·

Herstellung von M",N-Diphenyl-N!-(4-äthoxycarbonylphenyl)formamidin.
Zu einer Lösung von 19,7 g (0,10 Mol) N,N-Diphenylformamid
in 100 ml Chloroform wurden 22,8 g (0,11 Mol) Phosphorpentaehlorid in kleinen Portionen zugegeben. Uach
Beendigung dieser Zugabe wurde das Reaktionsgemisch 1 Stunde auf Rückflusstemperatur erhitzt. Aethyl-4-aminobenzoat
(16,5 g, 0,1 Mol) wurde in kleinen Portionen zugegeben und

dass Reaktionsgemisch 1 Stunde auf Rückflusstemperatur erhitzt, hierauf wurde die Lösung zu 100 ml Wasser gegeben
und mittels konzentrierter Ammoniumhydroxydlösung neutralisiert. Die Chloroformphase wurde abgetrennt,mittels
Magnesiumsulfat getrocknet, filtriert und auf ein gelbes OeI konzentriert. Die Reinigung dieses OeIs erfolgte mittels
Chromatographie unter Verwendung von Silicagel/Benzol und führte zum gewünschtem Produkt.

Herstellung von IF-(4-n-Butoxycarbonylphenyl)-lT--methyl-N-phenylformamidin.'
G-emäss Verfahren des Beispiels Ia wurde ausgehend von
n-Butyl-4-aminobenzoat Aethy1-4-(n-butoxycarbony!phenyl)formimidat
hergestellt.
Ein Gemisch von Aethyl-Ü-(n-butoxycarbonylphenyl)formimidat
(5,0 g, 0,02 Mol) und N-methylanilin (2,1 g, 0,02 Mol)
wurde auf 190° erhitzt,bis 1,7 ml Aethanol abdestilliert
waren. Mittels einer Kurzwegdestillationskolonne wurde das
gelbe OeI destilliert, wobei das gewünschte Produkt vom Siedepunkt 204° (0.08 mmHg) erhalten wurde .

wurden auf 190° erhitzt,bis 1,7 ml Alkohol
abdestilliert waren. Der Rückstand wurde aus Hexan umkristallisiert, wobei das gewünschte Produkt vom Siedepunkt 83-85°
anfiel.

(Beispiel Ia) und 3,2 g (0,022 Mol) 2-Methoxy-lT-methylanilin wurde auf 180° erhitzt,bis 1,3 ml
Aethanol abdestilliert waren. Das resultierende gelbe OeI
wurde kurzwegdestilliert, wobei das gewünschte Produkt vom Siedepunkt ^200° (0,05 mmHg) anfiel.

(0,05 mmHg) anfiel.

ausgehend von n-Butyl-4-aminobenzoat hergestellt.

Ein Gemisch von. 6,6 g (0,03 Mol) Ae'thyl-N-(3-hydroxy-4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)-formimidat
und 3,2 g (0,03 Mol) N-Methylanilin wurde auf 150° erhitzt, bis 1,7 ml Aethanol
abdestilliert waren. Das gelbe OeI wurde kurzwegdestilliert, wobei das gewünschte Produkt vom Siedepunkt ru200° (0,1 mmHg)
anfiel.
