Definitions
- the present invention relates to a special class of polyamide oligomers and their use Phyg.
- Oligomers are compounds in whose molecules only a few constitutional units of the same or different kind are repeatedly connected to one another and whose physical properties change markedly when the molar mass is changed by adding or removing one or more of the constitutional units. Likewise, a significant influence on the chemical and physical properties of the non-cyclic oligomers exert the existing end groups. For example, oligomers functionalized at the chain ends are of great importance for preparative polymer chemistry because, depending on the structure and functionality, they are macromonomers, telecheles or reactive oligomers for the preparation of polymers Block copolymers can serve.
- the oligomers also include the cyclic and linear di-, tri-, tetramers and their higher homologs formed inevitably in the polycondensation equilibrium in the preparation of the polyamides 6 and 66.
- oligomeric compounds are also prepared in a targeted manner, with the use of special structural units, so that these oligomeric compounds can perform the most diverse tasks.
- Such special tasks may e.g. be, good wetting and adhesion to surfaces, crosslinking reactions in plastic or adhesive formulations, but also the specific fixation and release of active ingredients.
- a major differentiator to monomeric compounds is the generally greatly reduced volatility but still good diffusion activity, which oligomers for many applications differs favorably from the monomeric compounds.
- Oligomeric compounds which are used in thermoplastic compositions can thus be subdivided into, for example: a) Reactive oligomers which, for example, take on special tasks as intermediates in the formulation of thermoplastic materials, such as the wetting of fillers and reinforcing materials or surfaces to be coated, which are used alone or already in combination with polymeric mass fractions and where such compositions subsequently, for example, can react with heat and often also with the action of a vacuum, and also radiation action can bring about a build-up of viscosity or crosslinking. Examples of condensation-active oligomers are described, for example, in EP 0 261 020 B1.
- Oligomers - identical to many polymer formulations - were specifically limited in their molecular weight and, for example, in the case of polyamide oligomers in each case the terminal carboxyl, ie -COOH, or amino, ie -NH 2 , possess. Such oligomers are deliberately adjusted in their preparation in molecular weight over the usual chain length control, but are still condensation active when introduced into a suitable thermoplastic formulation because of their functional chain ends.
- polyamide oligomers whose chain ends contain a radical R which can no longer undergo a condensation reaction and which is, for example, an aromatic ring system which may also comprise heteroatoms, or in particular an alkyl radical having, for example, 1 to 44 C atoms, and this may also be branched and may include heteroatoms, such as oxygen bridges.
- the present invention comprises special polyamide oligomers having a molecular weight in the range of 800 to 5000 g / mol, which are strictly controlled in their molecular weight and thus stable in the melt for a long time, and which are characterized as a special and inventive measure in that their concentration of COOH groups still free is low and the proportion of existing NH 2 functionality - whose concentration is expressed in mmol / kg - is always greater than the residual proportion of COOH groups.
- the polyamide oligomers according to the invention thus have, in addition to a substantially nonreactive end group, a defined concentration of NH 2 end groups. According to the invention, the concentration of NH 2 end groups max.
- the sum of the NH 2 and CO 2 H end groups is constantly smaller than the concentration of all end groups present.
- the determination of the concentration of end groups is known in the art.
- the amino and carboxyl end group concentrations are determined by means of a potentiometric titration. For the amino end groups, 0.2 to 1.0 g of polyamide or polyamide oligomer are dissolved in a mixture of 50 ml of m-cresol and 25 ml of isopropanol at 50 to 90 ° C.
- the difference (Ctot a i -C R ) is less than 400, more preferably less than 300 or 200 mmol / kg.
- the sum of the NH 2 and COOH end group concentration is always smaller than the concentrations of all end groups present.
- branched oligomers Since f also increases with increasing degree of branching, branched oligomers have a lower concentration of condensable end groups relative to the total concentration of the end groups. reduced by crosslinking, for example in mixtures with polyamides.
- the polyamide oligomers have a COOH end group concentration of less than 50, preferably less than 25 and particularly preferably less than 5 mmol / kg.
- Both basic functional groups such as R 3 N, R 2 NH, RNH 2 and carboxylate, ie the deprotonated carboxyl functionality which can be located at the chain end or in the oligomeric structure, are considered to be basic.
- the polyamide oligomers according to the invention only have very few reactive end groups and are therefore virtually no longer capable of condensation with other functionalized building blocks, such as monomers, oligomers or polymers.
- the oligomers according to the invention as pure substance and in suitable admixture with polyamide molding compositions, are extremely stable to degradation and even in the process of largely suppressing the degradation of such molding materials in the melt.
- the new oligomers according to the invention and suitable for many high-grade applications are specifically designed so that their proportion of remaining reactive end groups is small, and according to the invention it is additionally necessary for the proportion of COOH groups to be smaller than the sum of the basic functionalities ,
- Polyamides can be constructed from a variety of monomeric building blocks, so that a variety special final properties is possible. This high variation also applies to the polyamide oligomers according to the invention.
- properties such as crystallinity, the melting or glass transition point, the affinity for substrates and the moisture balance, ie the basic character of the oligomer, can be adjusted in a targeted manner.
- branched oligomers in addition to the purely linear chain structure.
- the rules applicable to polyamides such as those described e.g. in EP 0 345 645 B1, the definition of the branching structure also applies to the polyamide oligomers, in particular if their molecular weight is above 800 g / mol.
- Structurally branched polyamide oligomers are then reproducible and can be reproducibly produced without the formation of deposits in the reactor if, in addition to the structure-forming building blocks, exclusively amino acids and / or lactams are the basic monomers.
- Blocks and their composition per se but that they are low in condensation-active end groups and in particular that the remaining after the condensation reaction ratio of NH 2 -dreamali- activities to the acidic end groups is greater than 1, preferably greater than 2.
- the concentration of the primary amino end groups is adjusted so that the ratio of the amino and carboxyl end groups is at least 2.
- the maximal Concentration of the primary amino end groups (NH 2 -) is 300 mmol / kg.
- these are the less or not at all condensable, secondary or tertiary amino end groups.
- the substituents on the terminal secondary or tertiary amino groups are preferably alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl radicals having more than 4 C atoms, in particular having 4 to 44 C atoms.
- the polyamide oligomers of the invention can exert an excellent effect in the thermoplastic processing of plastics, and e.g. the flowability of the melts is improved, the crystallization rate can be increased and often the
- Entformungs is significantly improved. In this case, degradation effects in the sense of a hydrolytic chain scission are virtually eliminated and there is no corrosion on the processing machines, as they are known from COOH-containing mass ago.
- the concentration of the sum of basic end groups must be at least 20, preferably at least 50 mmol / kg.
- polyamide molding compositions containing the oligomers according to the invention have excellent hydrolysis and weathering stability if the oligomer used contains the concentration according to the invention-expressed in mmol / kg-of basic groups.
- these are incorporated into the oligomeric structure when the compound used for the chain termination other than the condensation active -NH 2 or COOH group is sterically shielded amino group (sec., or tertiary amine) as contained, for example, in the compounds of formula (I), (II) and (IV).
- Such special chain-terminating structural elements as starting materials are, for example, N-alkylated diamines, such as, for example, cocopropylenediamine or C16-22-alkylpropylenediamine (Duomeen M, from Akzo), 3-cyclohexylaminopropylenediamine, but in particular also the triacetonediamine.
- N-alkylated diamines such as, for example, cocopropylenediamine or C16-22-alkylpropylenediamine (Duomeen M, from Akzo)
- 3-cyclohexylaminopropylenediamine but in particular also the triacetonediamine.
- the addition of appropriately constructed polyamide oligomers to polyamide molding compositions improves their resistance to hydrolysis and weathering without the need for special addition of expensive stabilizers, for example of the so-called HALS type.
- a corresponding exemplary monocarboxylic acid is the 3- (3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid (Irganox 1310 ex Ciba SC), formula (III).
- the polyamide oligomer is thus controlled in terms of molecular weight in accordance with these possibilities and thus contains the sterically hindered amine function at one end of the chain and the sterically hindered phenol group at the other end of the chain, it causes, with suitable addition, in particular to form a polyamide molding compound, that these compounds simultaneously has excellent hydrolysis, weathering and heat stability.
- Monomers for the preparation of the polyamide oligomers of the invention are e.g. linear and branched-chain diamines and dicarboxylic acids with 2 to 44
- C atoms as well as cyclic, condensation-active di- amine with aliphatic amine function, such as 1,3- or 1,4-bisaminomethylcyclohexane or m- and p-xylylenediamine, bicyclic and thereby also multiply substituted diamines, such as 3, 3 'dimethyl-4,4'-dia-minodicyclohexylmethane or propane, or also the so-called TCD-diamine (3 (4), 8 (9) -bis (aminomethyl) - [. 5.2.1 O 26] tri-cyclo decane). Borna or diamines structure with the standards.
- 1,3- or 1,4-bisaminomethylcyclohexane or m- and p-xylylenediamine bicyclic and thereby also multiply substituted diamines, such as 3, 3 'dimethyl-4,4'-dia-minodicyclohexylmethane or propane, or also the so-called
- Suitable dicarboxylic acids are furthermore dimerized fatty acids, 1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid and isophthalic and terephthalic acids and naphthalenedicarboxylic acids.
- the molecular weight control is carried out e.g. in such a way that one monoamine is attached to the number of selected monomer units with functional groups still balanced and to one end of the chain a monocarboxylic acid is added to the other end of the chain, e.g. Stearylamine and stearic acid, each in a molar ratio of approximately 1: 1, but with a small excess of amine, so that the sum of basic chain ends has a concentration of at least 50 mmol / kg.
- a monocarboxylic acid is added to the other end of the chain, e.g. Stearylamine and stearic acid, each in a molar ratio of approximately 1: 1, but with a small excess of amine, so that the sum of basic chain ends has a concentration of at least 50 mmol / kg.
- Another excellent possibility for mass and end group control is to selectively incorporate a bi- or polyfunctional, cationic-active compound into the oligomer molecule and to use a monofunctional compound of the opposite type for each functional end-group of one type created, e.g. non-volatile ether diamine as a building block in the oligomer structure and 2 stearic acids for the chain ends.
- a bi- or polyfunctional, cationic-active compound into the oligomer molecule and to use a monofunctional compound of the opposite type for each functional end-group of one type created, e.g. non-volatile ether diamine as a building block in the oligomer structure and 2 stearic acids for the chain ends.
- the central building block may also be trifunctional or even polyfunctional, with, for example, trimesic acid or ethylenediamine tetrapropionic acid.
- trimesic acid or ethylenediamine tetrapropionic acid For the structure 3 or 4 equivalents of monatinin, such as stearylamine, are then required. In each case one proceeds in such a way that a predetermined excess of amine function remains and, for specific effects, compounds which also contain an additional sterically hindered amine function or a sterically hindered phenol function are deliberately used.
- a suitable class of compounds which are outstanding for the preparation of structurally branched oligomers are furthermore the so-called styrene-maleic anhydride resins with e.g. 5 to 10 maleic anhydride groups (MA) in the molecule.
- MA maleic anhydride groups
- the MA group in the melt reacts with an amine function with imide formation as a growth trigger for an "oligomer arm", which is then carboxyl-terminated, wherein the building block is amino acid or may be lactam and wherein the chain termination is carried out using a monoamine.
- Oligomers based on amino acid and / or lactam with this branching feature still have outstanding flowability even with comparatively higher molecular weight and are thus particularly suitable for highly filled polyamide formulations having surfaces of outstanding gloss.
- the industrial preparation of the oligomers can be carried out in reaction vessels, as they are used for the preparation of conventional polyamides, and it obeys substantially the rules, as they are known for PA synthesis.
- the combination of diamine with dicarboxylic acid is the main monomer used, its salt can be assumed, or the autoclave or a preparatory so-called solver can each be charged with amine and with acid in the presence of a suitable solvent. th amount of water, whereby salt formation takes place, and one proceeds as usual in the PA synthesis. If lactam, in particular lactam 12 mitanhusd or the sole monomer, so a so-called. Printing phase under the action of water and heat is necessary to avoid monomer losses and to meet the Stöchiometrievor agent, a preparatory and tailored to the monomer system pressure phase is always recommended.
- the main distinguishing feature of polyamide in the industrial oligomer production is that the melt always remains fluid and extraordinarily easy to stir because of the targeted limitation of the molecular weight, so that the heat input and the heat transfer are also very easy to stir
- the procedure may be, for example, as follows:
- the melt jet is introduced into an intensively stirred water bath. This rapid solidification and the forming spherical particles can be easily filtered off.
- the melt is forced through a perforated plate into a liquid cooling medium, for example water, and separated from the nozzle surface by means of a rotating knife, so that rounded particles can form, which are then separated from the liquid.
- a liquid cooling medium for example water
- rounded particles can form, which are then separated from the liquid.
- the melt can also be discharged and cooled via a so-called plating strip, resulting in pills of defined geometry.
- Such systems are offered for example by Sandvik, CH-6002 Lucerne.
- the coarse particles thus formed can then be allowed to form e.g. while cooling with liquid nitrogen, excellent for grinding fine powder.
- the oligomers as fine powders are suitable, e.g. as binder resins or binder systems for addition to ceramic or metal powder mixtures and to improve their processing and shaping according to the known methods, such. Powder spray gas, warm compaction or cold compaction process.
- they are very suitable for improving the processability before plastic formulations, whereby they are not volatile and no chain gap tion, as is often the case with the use of monomeric processing aids. If they are suitably structured, they additionally improve the final properties of the formulations, such as, for example, their hydrolysis, weathering and heat stability.
- MB carriers masterbatch carriers
- the polyamide oligomer of the invention forms together with a related thermoplastic, e.g. with related polyamide, the MB carrier.
- Acrylates for example, which help to improve the distribution of the additives in the matrix.
- Such acrylates of widely varying molecular weight and structure are offered, for example, under the collective term "extrusion aids" by Kaneka and by Rohm and Haas. It is particularly interesting, however, if simultaneously with the incorporation of oligomer in the thermoplastic, especially in a polyamide melt, further processing or property-related additives are directly used, such as additional stabilizers (heat, processing, weathering), organic dyes and pigments , Tracer, biocides or impact modifiers and / or anti-flame agents and each application-suitable combinations of such additives.
- the radicals R terminating in the oligomer can be adapted specifically to the requirements as MB carriers in their properties, in particular their wetting activity, e.g. by incorporation of oxygen bridges or a secondary or tertiary amine function and also of carboxylate groups in a minor proportion and that the radical R can be linear, branched or else cyclic and also aromatic.
- Very finely divided basic metal salts such as, for example, magnesium hydroxide or calcium oxide or hydroxide or else very finely divided, active zinc oxide, are suitable for this purpose.
- Amines, in particular tertiary amines, as they are often also used in the form of the so-called. HALS stabilizers, are suitable for the deprotonation of still existing COOH groups.
- organic and inorganic bases which are suitable for the deprotonation of COOH end groups. It is advantageous if the inorganic salts are in very finely divided form and therefore have a large active surface (eg 10 m 2 / g), as is the case, for example, with precipitated magnesium hydroxide.
- active surface eg 10 m 2 / g
- organic compounds such as, for example, mono- or polyamines with preferably secondary or, in particular, tertiary structure, it is essential that they be diffusion-active and less volatile.
- the oligomer be present in its deprotonated form prior to its application. If it is e.g. when polyamide in finely divided powder form is used, e.g. also a suitable admixing with magnesium hydroxide possible and the deprotonation to the carboxylate takes place directly during the melting and the incorporation process.
- Another suitable possibility is to carry out the deprotonation of residual amounts of COOH end groups by stirring base into the oligomer melt immediately after production before discharge from the autoclave.
- deprotonating agent can be directly integrated into the selected MB formulation and the neutralization step takes place during the MB production in the melt. If base, eg magnesium hydroxide, is used in a if excess is used, it is also possible to deprotonate carboxyl groups which are still present in the polyamide when adding such special masterbatches to polyamide formulations, which may additionally have a positive effect on the stability to processing, hydrolysis and weathering.
- base eg magnesium hydroxide
- polyamide molding compositions which additionally contain phosphorus compounds, e.g. as stabilizers against discoloration during thermoplastic forming, e.g. Irgafos 168 and Irgafos 12, included, significantly improved with respect to their viscosity constant in the melt state.
- phosphorus compounds e.g. as stabilizers against discoloration during thermoplastic forming, e.g. Irgafos 168 and Irgafos 12, included
- FIG. 1 shows a viscosity curve in the form of a
- the oligomer chosen for this purpose has a diamine as the central building block, to which 7 amino acid building blocks are condensed on a statistical average, the rule being that by condensing an amino acid building block Steins the oligomer structure always remains aminterminiert.
- the chosen basic structure is subsequently reacted on both sides with a monocarboxylic acid such that the end groups are largely alkyl radicals.
- the PA oligomer has a number average molecular weight of about 2200 g / mol.
- a 130 liter reaction vessel was used, which was charged with 45 kg of the raw materials in the described MoI ratio.

- Tables 2 and 3 give the names of the monomers and regulators used.
- the melting point increases with increasing number n of basic building blocks and finally reaches the usual melting point of polyamide 12 with an n of 40. If the number of building blocks is low, e.g. 4, several additional melting peaks show up, because clearly distinct from each other in the associated, even lower molecular weight range of the oligomeric structures forming side by side. From a number n ⁇ 7 this effect becomes negligible.
- the basic building block is aminolauric acid, but different regulator systems are used.
- a bifunctional regulator (Example 6: ClO, Example 8: TRI) is incorporated into the oligomer structure and additionally the resulting reactive end groups, in Example 6 completely and in Example 8 only slightly more than half stearate -terminated .
- Example 8 the basicity is deliberately increased, and in the customary end-group determination, the expected 280 mmol / kg of amine function are found.
- the melting point for Example 6 and 8 per almost identical at 168 0 C.
- Example 7 the structure of controllers are combined so that the olive is gomerkette not disturbed, so the oligomer can crystallize better. This also affects at a higher melting point.
- oligomers of particularly high utility value according to the invention which are used exclusively with combinations of monofunctionally active oxygen.
- ren and amines are prepared and the control equivalent, the molar ratio of acid to base is 1: 1, takes place.
- a special carboxylic acids and special amine are used, which contain structural elements, which have a clearly stabilizing effect on polyamide molding compounds.
- MOX acid it is the sterically hindered phenolic group which increases heat stability in polyamide molding compounds
- TAC it is the sterically hindered amine structure (HALS) which is well known in the art for effective weathering stabilization.
- HALS sterically hindered amine structure
- TAC also acts as an acid scavenger, so that when using such oligomers and hydrolytic stability can be improved.
- these oligomers according to the invention thus contain alkyl groups for high flowability and good demolding, sterically hindered phenol groups for improving heat stability and, in particular, sterically shielded amine structures for improved weathering and hydrolysis stability.
- This special structure structure ensures that the advantageous basicity is always present in a high proportion and without degradation effects occurring during use.
- PA-12 melts is compared, which is a PA12 oligomer of
- the granules were used for an MVR measurement at 275 ° C. and a load of 5 kg, and in each case the MVR value was determined after a melting time of 4 and 20 minutes. At the associated melting cone, the relative viscosity was also measured to characterize the polymer degradation under thermal stress. The results are as follows:
- Example 29 customary polyamide 12 is admixed with PA12 oligomer according to the invention together with a small proportion by weight of magnesium hydroxide, in Example 30 polyamide 12 and oligomer having an amino terminal excess are used and at Example 31, this formulation additionally contains some magnesium hydroxide.
