の問題は、異なった解像度モードを設けることによっ
て、電子カメラに使用されている取り外し可能な記憶装
置の互換性が複雑になることである。一方、各画素に対
応するデータが単に取り外し可能な記憶装置に記録され
る場合には、信号処理構造は簡単であるが、フィルタ素
子数あるいは、カラーフィルタの配列の変更があると、
記憶装置に記憶されているデータの配列あるいは画像毎
のデータ量の変更を伴うことになる。これは、異なった
センサ配列を持つ他のカメラ装置と、記録された記憶内
容(memory)との互換性が無いことを意味する。
この問題は常に重大な欠点であるが、いくつかの解像度
モードが設けられている場合には、これはさらに深刻で
複雑になる。すなわち、いくつかの解像度モードがある
場合には、各モードは使用中のカラーフィルタの配列に
左右される可能性があるからである。

れたカラー信号から、漸次低減する解像度が得られる。
これらの解像度が低減されたモードは、所定の記憶装置
では画像記憶容量(storage)の増加を意味す
る。全解像度であれば、たった一つあるいはほんの少し
の画像しか記憶できないが、この低減解像度モードで
は、一連の画像を撮影記録できるのである。この引例か
ら分かるように、バースト(burst)方式で達成さ
れる速度の上限は、取り外し可能な記憶装置に書き込む
時間によって規制される。
メラ装置の基本的な欠点は、画像の捕捉時とデータの縮
小時との間の信号処理量である。処理量が増加すると、
新しい低減解像度の画像が形成される前に、雑音が装置
に侵入する可能性が増える。さらに、解像度を低減させ
る主な理由は、先ずより多くの像を撮影し、記録するた
めに記憶装置の容量を確保することである。従って、カ
メラはできる限り多くの画像を保持でき、より迅速にカ
メラの記憶装置に画像をロードすることができる。しか
し、上記米国特許に記載のカメラは、取り外し可能な記
憶装置への呼出時間の速度に制限があり、解像度低減の
利点を十分に享受できない。特に、良くあることである
が、取り外し式記憶装置は装置中でもっとも動作が遅い
記憶装置なのである。

素)がチェッカー盤パターンで縦と横に並んでおり、レ
ッド素子36aとブルー素子36cに対応する色差(c
hrominance)画素が輝度画素に隣接して縦と
横に並んでいる。ドライバ38(図1参照)がクロック
信号を発生する。この信号によって、画像の積分(in
tegration)時間と画素を高速水平レジスタ4

送受信機(UART)70と、RS232ドライバ72
が設けられている。コネクタ74aと74bを介し、さ
らにドッキングユニット16にある小型コンピュータ・
システム・インターフェース(SCSI)制御装置76

変換器58、修正用ROM60、フラッシュユニット5

ロプロセッサ制御装置82は、ファインダの表示素子5

ータの2つの異なった解像度レベル(高低)を使用者に
選択させるものである。スイッチ88cは複数の写真を
高速で撮影できる低解像度「バースト」モードを起動す
るものであり、スイッチ88dはフラッシュユニット5
2を起動させ、スイッチ88eはセルフタイマ・ディレ
イ・モードを起動させる。捕捉スイッチ88fは露光を
開始させる。液晶表示装置(LCD)90は、選択され
た特性値を表示する。カメラの性能に応じてさらに入力
を設けて、圧縮レベル(ビット数)を選択するとか、カ
ラー・モード(白/黒、あるいはカラー)を指定するこ
ともできる。

スイッチ88fを起動すると、カメラが複数の画像の一
つを捕捉する。すると、捕捉された画像はコンピュータ
18にダウンロードされるまで、フラッシュEPROM
66に記憶される。本実施例では、画像センサ28から
読み出された画像は、合計512のラインと768画素
/ラインを持っている。センサ28は「ベイヤー」カラ
ー・フィルタ・パターンを備えているので、A/D変換
器58からの数値化された値は、センサ28の様々なカ
ラー素子36a,36bと36cからの値と対応する。
8ビットディジタル画素値が、2MHzの読出率でRO
M60を介して画素Dセンサ28から読み出され、4M
bitダイナミックRAMで構成されたフレーム・バッ
ファ・メモリ62に記憶される。画素センサ28から一
つの画像を読み出し、フレーム・バッファ・メモリ62
に記憶するのに略200msecかかる。次に、フレー
ム・バッファ・メモリ62から画像が遅い速度で読み出
され、プログラムROM64aに記憶されている命令に
基づいて、DSP64において実行されるDPCMアル
ゴリズム(8ビット/画素の画像を2ビット/画素の画
像に圧縮する)を用いて圧縮され、フラッシュEPRO
M66に記憶される。このフラッシュEPROM66は
数個の圧縮画像を保持することが可能である。このプロ
セスは略4秒かかる。すなわち、全解像度画像が、4秒
毎にのみフラッシュEPROM66に記憶されるのであ
る。フレーム・バッファ・メモリ62を使用することに
よって、画素センサ28とは異なったスループット率で
DSP64が作動できる。これについては、米国特許第
5016107号、「画像圧縮及びディジタル記憶装置
を用いる電子スチル・カメラ」を参照されたい。この米
国特許は、本願の一部を構成している。上述のラッチン
グデコーディング回路84は、DSP64の要求をフレ
ーム・バッファ・メモリ62とフラッシュEPROM6

憶される。すなわち、フラッシュEPROM66には、
高解像度画像に比べて4倍の低解像度画像を記憶するこ
とができる。さらに、フレーム・バッファ・メモリ62
に、高速で5つまで低解像度画像を記憶できる。従っ
て、使用者がスイッチ88bを押し続けると、スイッチ
88cの起動によってバーストモードが可能となり、5
つまで低解像度画像のバーストが高速で実行される。次
に、これらの画像が読み出され、フラッシュEPROM
66に記憶される。
「サブサンプリング」パターンが必要となる。例えば、
各2番目のラインの各6番目の画素をフレーム・バッフ
ァ・メモリ62内に記憶するために選択したとすれば、
画像は3色の内の一つの値しか含まないことになる。カ
ラー画像を形成するために、カラー・フィルタ・アレイ
30の画素を適切にサブサンプルせねばならない。この
サブサンプリングは、良好な輝度解像度を維持し、カラ
ー「エリアジング(aliasing)」偽像を発生さ
せないように行わねばならない。サブサンプリングのパ
ターンの一つが、図4に示されている。図4では、サン
プルされた画素が丸で囲まれている。このパターンで
は、各2番目のラインの各2番目のグリーン素子を選ん
で、グリーン(輝度)素子がチェックカーボードタイプ
の配列でサブサンプルされる。この場合、素子を一つず
らしてサンプリングを行い、「サブサンプルされたベイ
ヤー型チェッカーボード」を形成する。選択されたグリ
ーン素子に空間的に近いレッド素子とブルー素子が選択
され、輝度サンプルの少なくともいくつかと空間的に隣
接するカラーサンプルを形成する。これによって、発生
する恐れのある偽カラー・エッジを最小にしている。

リ62に記憶され、DSP64が同一カラーの複数の画
素の値を処理し、画素のいくつかを平均化してカラー・
サブサンプルされた画像を形成する。このようなパター
ンの一つが、図5に示されている。図5では、平均化さ
れなかった画素は丸で囲まれ、各々矢印の基線で示すも
のは平均化された画素である。ここでは、グリーン素子
が直接使われており、2つの横に隣接するレッド素子の
値(矢印で模式的に示されている)が平均化され、各2
番目のグリーン素子の位置でレッド素子の画素値を形成
している。そして、2つの上下に隣接するブルー素子の
値が平均化され(矢印で示されるように)、同一の場所
でブルー素子の画素値を形成する。高解像度を維持する
ために、グリーン素子は平均化されない。残念なこと
に、この配列では、多少の輝度エリアジングが発生す
る。さらに、図6のパターンでは、グリーン素子の値が
平均化され、輝度のエリアシングを除去している。しか
し、この平均化では画像の鮮鋭度も低減する。図6で
は、第1のグループ102における「クロス」型のパタ
ーン内の最も近接する4つのグリーン素子が平均化され
る(矢印で示すように)。4つのグリーン素子中の各2
番目のグループ104については、4つの最も近接する
レッド素子が平均化され、中央のブルー素子の値の半分
が、2つの横方向で隣接するブルー素子の平均値の半分
と合計される。全ての場合(図4ー6)において、サブ
サンプリングは常に、レッド素子あるいはブルー素子の
値が一つで、グリーン素子の値が2つという割合であ
る。

フレーム・バッファ・メモリ62に記憶するようにして

ない。図5と6に示されているサブサンプリング・パタ
ーンは、マイクロプロセッサ制御装置82を適切にプロ
グラムして、アドレスと制御信号をタイミング発生器8

ぞれ記憶する。

た画素値を記憶するよう命令する。図4のサブサンプリ
ング・パターンでは少数の画素をフレーム・バッファ・
メモリ62に記憶させるだけであるので、図5と6のパ
ターンと比較して、多数の低解像度画像を含むバースト
を、高解像度モードの低速(略4秒/フレーム)ではな
くて、比較的高速(略2フレーム/秒)で捕捉すること

フラッシュEPROM66とDSPプロセッサ64によ
って制限される。全ての場合において、マイクロプロセ
ッサ制御装置82とタイミング発生器80に必要なプロ
グラミングは、関連分野の技術を持つプログラマーの知
識の範囲内で処理できる。他のサブサンプリング・パタ
ーンも有効である。すなわち、これらのパターンには、
輝度要素(グリーン素子)と空間的に隣接するクロミナ
ンス要素(レッド素子あるいはブルー素子)が含まれる
ことが好ましい。他のフィルタアレイ及びパターンを使
用できる。例えば、補色(シアン、マジェンタ及びイエ
ロー)に基づくものである。
よりも記憶スペースが増加する場合には、本発明を簡略
化したものが好ましいこともある。図7には、このよう
な用途の「1/4サイズ」のサブサンプリング・パター
ンが示されている。図7では、サンプルされた各画素が
丸で囲まれている。この場合、数値化された全ての画像
がフレーム・バッファ・メモリ62に記憶される。2つ
ではなくたった一つだけクロックが必要であるので、ク
ロッキングが簡略化される。そして、DSP64が原画
素を1/10に減らして、図7にあるような「1/4サ
イズ」のベイヤーパターン画像を作成する。DSP64
はプログラム可能に構成されているので、DSP64に
「サブサンプリング」をさせる方が、フレーム・バッフ
ァ・メモリ62にサブサンプリングさせるようにクロッ
クをプログラムするより容易である。

変化と変更が可能であることは明白であろう。2つの解
像度モードを図1を用いて説明したが、同じ理論をモー
ド数に関係なく適用可能である。例えば、第3のモード
を図4のサンプルされた素子をさらにサブサンプルして

Claims (8)
- 【請求項1】 解像度の異なる画像を処理可能な電子カ
メラであって、(a) 輝度及びクロミナンス(chrominanc
e)カラー・フィルタのパターンによってカバーされた
フォトサイト(photosites)の2次元アレイ
から得られる縦および横方向に配列されたカラー画像の
画素を表す画像信号を発生する画像センサーと、(b) 少なくとも一つの画像に対応するカラー画像の画
素を記憶する十分な容量を持つバッファメモリと、(c)前記 バッファメモリの次段に設けられていて前記
バッファメモリからの処理済み画像信号を記憶する出力
メモリと、(d) 縦および横方向の双方に記憶するためにカラー画
像の画素を選択する命令であって、全カラー画像画素が
選択される全解像度モードと少数のカラー画像画素が選
択される少なくとも一つの低減解像度モードとが含まれ
た命令を出して画像の画素の解像度を選択する解像度モ
ードスイッチと、(e) 解像度モードスイッチによって選択された画素の
解像度に応じて起動され、画像を表す縦および横方向の
画素数を変更するための制御装置であって、低減された
解像度モードのカラー画像画素をサブサンプリングする
制御装置と、(f) 選択されたカラー画像の画素を上記出力メモリに
記憶させ、それにより前記出力メモリが上記全解像度モ
ードではなく上記低減された解像度モードでより多数の
画像を記憶できるようにする記憶手段とから構成され、(g)多数のサブサンプリングされた画像が前記バッフ
ァメモリに記憶され、その後、前記記憶手段が前記サブ
サンプリングされた画像を読み出し前記出力メモリに記
憶して、前記制御装置がさらにバーストモードを可能に
する ことを特徴とする解像度の異なる画像を処理可能な
電子カメラ。 - 【請求項2】 少なくとも一つの低減された解像度モー
ドは、連続撮影を高速化することを特徴とする請求項1
に記載の電子カメラ。 - 【請求項3】 前記低減された解像度モードにおいて、
前記バッファメモリに前記カラー画像画素を記憶する前
に、前記少数のカラー画像画素が前記出力メモリに記憶
するために選択されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載
の電子カメラ 。 - 【請求項4】 前記低減された解像度モードにおいて、
前記バッファメモリに前記カラー画像画素を記憶した後
に、前記少数のカラー画像画素が前記出力メモリに記憶
するために圧縮されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載
の電子カメラ。 - 【請求項5】 解像度の異なる画像を処理可能な電子カ
メラであって、 (a)輝度及びクロミナンス(chrominanc
e)カラー・フィルタのパターンによってカバーされた
フォトサイト(photosites)の2次元アレイ
から得られる縦および横方向に配列されたカラー画像の
画素を表すベースバンド画像信号を発生する画像センサ
ーと、 (b)少なくとも一つの画像に対応するベースバンド信
号としてカラー画像の画素を記憶する十分な容量を持つ
バッファメモリと、 (c)前記バッファメモリに記憶されたベースバンド信
号を圧縮し、少なくとも一つの圧縮された画像信号を発
生する信号処理装置と、 (d)前記バッファメモリの次段に設けられていて前記
バッファメモリからの処理済み画像信号を記憶する出力
メモリと、 (e)縦および横方向の双方に記憶するためにカラー画
像の画素を選択する命令であって、全カラー画像画素が
選択される全解像度モードと少数のカラー画像画素が選
択される少なくとも一つの低減解像度モードとが含まれ
た命令を出して画像の画素の解像度を選択する解像度モ
ードスイッチと、 (f)解像度モードスイッチによって選択された画素の
解像度に応じて起動され、画像を表す縦および横方向の
画素数を変更するための制御装置であって、低減された
解像度モードのカラー画像画素をサブサンプリングする
制御装置と、 (g)選択されたカラー画像の画素を上記出力メモリに
記憶させ、それにより前記出力メモリが上記全解像度モ
ードではなく上記低減された解像度モードでより多数の
画像を記憶できるようにする手段とから構成され、 (h)多数のサブサンプリングされた画像が前記バッフ
ァメモリに記憶され、その後、前記記憶手段が前記サブ
サンプリングされた画像を読み出し前記出力メモリに記
憶して、前記制御装置がさらにバーストモードを可能に
することを特徴 とする解像度の異なる画像を処理可能な
電子カメラ。 - 【請求項6】 少なくとも一つの低減された解像度モー
ドは、連続撮影を高速化することを特徴とする請求項5
に記載の電子カメラ。 - 【請求項7】 前記低減された解像度モードにおいて、
前記バッファメモリに前記カラー画像画素を記憶する前
に、前記少数のカラー画像画素が前記出力メモリに記憶
するために選択されることを特徴とする請求項5に記載
の電子カメラ。 - 【請求項8】 前記低減された解像度モードにおいて、
前記バッファメモリに前記カラー画像画素を記憶した後
に、前記少数のカラー画像画素が前記出力メモリに記憶
するために圧縮されることを特徴とする請求項5に記載
の電子カメラ。
