The remaining material thickness dt in the area of the working edge 14 is large enough to keep the slot 18 narrow as it is when a slat 24 is moved in the direction of the sheet plane. In other words, the adjustment of the slats to change the amount of paint supplied is never so great that adjacent slats 24 separate apart and no longer form a slot 18.
