Description
Die Erfindung betrifft ferroelektrische Flüssigkristalle für die Herstellung schnell schaltender Displays mit
Speichereigenschaften zur Darstellung von Ziffern, Zeichen und Abbildungen.
Es ist bekannt, ferroelektrische flüssige Kristalle zur Herstellung schnell schaltender Displays mit Speicherei
genschaften zu nutzen (N. A. Clark, S.T. Lagerwall, Appl. Phys. Lett 36,899 (1980)).
Die Zahl der ferroelektrischen Flüssigkristallverbindungen hat sich in jüngster Zeit stark erweitert, jedoch
gibt es immer noch keine reinen Stoffe mit optimalen Eigenschaften (S. T. Lagerwall, J. Wahl, N. A. Clark.

Viele ferroelektrische Flüssigkristalle sind chemisch und thermisch wenig stabil, besitzen hohe Schmelztempe
raturen oder ihre spontane Polarisation ist nicht ausreichend. Wegen der zu kleinen Dipolmomente und der
damit verbundenen geringen spontanen Polarisation sind die Derivate der 2-Methyl-butylgruppe und anderer
chiraler verzweigter Alkylketten für die praktische Nutzung infolge der zu hohen Schaltzeiten ungünstig.
Andere ferroelektrische Flüssigkristalle enthalten die Azomethin-Gruppierung und sind als Schiff'sche Basen
wenig stabil gegenüber Wärme, Feuchtigkeit und Säuren. Einige von chiralen α-Chlorcarbonsäuren abgeleitete
ferroelektrische Flüssigkristalle (J. W. Goodby et al., Proceed. of 1983 A. C. S. Meeting Las Vegas, Nevada 1982.
Liquid Crystals and Ordered Fluids Vol. 4 F 1) zogen zu hohe Schmelztemperaturen.
Ester optisch aktiver α-Halogencarbonsäuren sind bereits
bekannt, so aus DE 35 15 373 A1, DD 240 385 A1, DD 240 386 A1
und US 4,592,858. In EP 0 248 335 A2 und WO 8705018 A3, die
Dokumente mit älterem Zeitrang sind, sind ebenfalls optisch
aktive Verbindungen mit chiralen Zentren beschrieben. Die
bekannten Verbindungen stellen jedoch keine 2,5-
disubstituierten 1,3,4-Thiadiazolderivate dar.
Aus DE 37 30 859 A1 und DE 37 12 995 A1, die zum Teil
ebenfalls Dokumente mit älterem Zeitrang sind, sind jedoch
bereits 2,5-disubstituierte 1,3,4-Thiadiazolderivate
enthaltende Medien mit smektischer flüssigkristalliner Phase
bekannt.
Aufgabe der Erfindung sind weitere ferroelektrische Flüssigkristalle, die in schnell schaltenden Displays mit Speicher
eigenschaften eingesetzt werden können.
Erfindungsgemäß wurde gefunden, daß Verbindungen, die einen chiralen Halogenalkylrest enthalten entspre
chend der allgemeinen Formel (I)
worin
R2 = C10H21-, OC5H11-, OC8H17- oder OC9H19-
bedeutet, ferroelektrisch kristallin-flüssig sind.

bedeutet, ferroelektrisch kristallin-flüssig sind.
In Gemischen untereinander sowie mit anderen kristallin-flüssigen oder nicht kristallin-flüssigen Substanzen
bilden sie ferroelektrische kristallin-flüssige Phasen aus und sind zum Einsatz in Displays geeignet.
Die Substanzen werden hergestellt nach an sich bekannten Verfahren z. B. durch Veresterung chiraler
α-Halogencarbonsäuren bzw. ihrer Derivate mit entsprechenden Hydroxyverbindungen.
Die chiralen α-Halogencarbonsäuren werden erhalten durch Umsetzung kommerziell erhältlicher chiraler
α-Aminosäuren, durch Spaltung von Racematen der α-Halogencarbonsäuren bzw. durch asymmetrische Syn
these. Andere Derivate werden durch Veresterung mit β-Halogencarbonsäuren oder Umsetzen mit anderen
chiralen Halogenalkylderivaten hergestellt. Infolge der hohen Dipolmomente der Halogenalkylderivate besitzen
die Substanzen eine hohe spontane Polarisation und damit geringe Schaltzeiten in optoelektronischen Displays.
In Tabelle 4b sind die erfindungsgemäßen Substanzen aufgeführt.
Die Tabellen 1, 2 und 3 sowie 4a enthalten bereits bekannte Substanzen, die
als Mischungskomponenten verwendet werden können.
Dabei bedeuten:
K = kristallin-fester Zustand
SC* = ferroelektrische smektische C-Phase
SA, SB = smektische A-, B-Phase
CH = cholesterinische Phase
I = isotrop-flüssige Phase
N = nematische Phase
Sx = nicht klassifizierte smektische Phase.

Die Zahlen zwischen den Phasenbezeichnungen bedeuten Umwandlungstemperaturen
in °C.
Die erfindungsgemäßen Verbindungen wurden in Analogie zu folgenden
Beispielen hergestellt.
0,01 mol 4-Hydroxybenzamidin-hydrochlorid und 0,01 mol 3-Dimethylamino-2-(4-hexyloxyphenyl-N,N-dime
hylpropen-(2)-immoniumperchlorat werden in 100 ml Triethylamin 8 Stunden unter Rückfluß erhitzt. Nach dem
Abkühlen wird auf Eis/konz. H2SO4 (200 g : 25 ml) gegossen, der Niederschlag wird abgesaugt und mehrmals aus
Methanol umkristallisiert.
Ausbeute: 2,6 g (75% d. Th.).
F: 155°C.

Zu einer Lösung von 0,005 mol 2-(4-Hydroxyphenyl-5-(4-hexyloxyphenyl)pyrimidin. 0,6 ml Triethylamin und
50 ml absoluten Toluen werden 0,77 g/0,005 mol (S)-2-Chlor-3-methylbutyrylchlorid hinzugefügt. (Das Säure
chlorid wurde nach dem bekannten Verfahren aus den optisch aktiven α-Aminosäuren hergestellt).
Man läßt einen Tag bei Raumtemperatur stehen und erwärmt anschließend eine Stunde bei 80°C auf dem
Wasserbad. Nach dem Abfiltrieren des Niederschlages wird das Lösungsmittel abdestilliert und der Rückstand
mehrmals aus Ethanol umkristallisiert.
Die Ausbeuten betragen 60-70% der Theorie.
Das kristallin-flüssige Schmelzverhalten ist in den Tabellen angegeben.
200 g frische Bäckerhefe werden mit einer 30°C warmen Lösung von 300 g Saccharose in 1,6 l frischem
Wasser aufgeschlämmt und bei 30°C leicht gerührt. Nach einer Stunde werden unter starkem Rühren 0,15 mol
destillierter Acetessigester zugegeben und die Mischung wird 24 h bei 25-30°C leicht gerührt. Anschließend
wird eine 35°C warme Lösung von 200 g Saccharose in 1 l Wasser portionsweise hinzugefügt und nach einstün
gem kräftigem Rühren werden nochmals 0,15 mol Acetessigester zugesetzt. Die Mischung wird 50 h bei
25-30°C gerührt. Danach wird über Kieselgur abgesaugt und der Rückstand zweimal mit je 100 ml Wasser
gewaschen. Die vereinigten wäßrigen Phasen werden mit NaCl gesättigt und fünfmal mit je 500 ml Ether
extrahiert. Nach Abtrennung und Trocknung der organischen Phase über Na2SO4 wird am Rotationsverdamp
fer auf 50-80 ml eingeengt. Fraktionierte Destillation des Rückstandes liefert (S)-(+)-3-Hydroxybutansäureet
hylester in einer Ausbeute von 65-75% der Theorie.

0,24 mol (S)-(+)-3-Hydroxybutansäureethylester werden in 100 ml Benzen unter Rühren und Feuchtigkeits
ausschluß mit 0,07 mol wasserfreiem ZnCl2 versetzt. Anschließend werden 0,72 mol SOCl2 zugegeben und bei
Raumtemperatur wird 2 Tage gerührt. Danach wird die Reaktionsmischung mit gesättigter NaHCO3-Lösung
behandelt. Nach Abtrennung der wäßrigen Phase wird mit Na2SO4 getrocknet, das Lösungsmittel abdestilliert
und der Rückstand fraktioniert destilliert. Dabei wird (R)-(-)3-Chlorbutansäureethylester in einer Ausbeute
von 65% erhalten.

0,07 mol (R)-(-)-3-Chlorbuttersäureethylester werden mit 100 ml konzentrierter Salzsäure bis zur klaren
Lösung kräftig gerührt und anschließend 3 Tage unter leichtem Rühren bei 37-40°C gehalten. Danach wird mit
100 ml Wasser verdünnt, mit NaCl gesättigt und dreimal mit je 100 ml Ether ausgeethert. Nach Trocknung der
organischen Phase mit Na2SO4 wird das Lösungsmittel am Rotationsverdampfer entfernt und der Rückstand im
Vakuum fraktioniert destilliert. Die Ausbeute an (R)-(-)-3-Chlorbutansäure beträgt 70-75% der Theorie.

0,04 mol (R)-(-)-3-Chlorbutansäure werden mit 0,06 mol SOCl2 versetzt und unter Feuchtigkeitsausschluß
24 h bei Raumtemperatur stehengelassen. Danach wird die Temperatur der Mischung 1½ Stunden bei 42°C
gehalten, anschließend wird bei eisgekühlter Vorlage fraktioniert abdestilliert.
Ausbeute: 70-75% der Theorie

In einem 50-ml-Erlenmeyerkolben mit CaCl2-Rohr werden 1,7.10⁻3 mol des betreffenden Alkohols oder
Phenols in 15-30 ml THF vorgelegt. Nach Abkühlung der Lösung auf -30°C werden unter Rühren nacheinan
der 2,13.10⁻3 mol (R)(-)-3-Chlorbutyrylchlorid und 1,7.10⁻3 mol Pyridin zugegeben. Nachdem 10 min bei
-30°C gerührt wurde, läßt man die Reaktionsmischung 2 Tage bei -20°C stehen. Anschließend wird das
Gemisch in 300 ml eiskalte 5%ige Salzsäure gegeben. Fällt der Ester dabei aus, wird abgesaugt und aus
Methanol, Hexan oder Benzin umkristallisiert.
Kristallisiert der Ester nicht in der 5%igen Salzsäure aus, wird dreimal ausgeethert, über Na2SO4 getrocknet
und anschließend destilliert. Die Ausbeute an den entsprechenden Estern beträgt 30-70% der Theorie.
