Die vorliegende Erfindung bezieht sich auf neue Verbindungen der allgemeinen Formel
worin einer der Substituenten R, und Rp
Cyano und der andere geradkettiges Alkyl mit 3 bis 9 Kohlenstoffatomen, geradkettiges
Alkoxy mit 2 bis 9 Kohlenstoffatomen oder geradkettiges Alkanoyloxy mit 2 bis 9
Kohlenstoffatomen bedeutet.
Die erfindungsgemässen Verbindungen sind besonders wertvoll
als Komponenten von flüssig-kristallinen Mischungen und besitzen zum grössten Teil selbst flüssigkristalline und insbesondere
nematische Eigenschaften. Die erfindungsgemässen Ver-

bindungen besitzen unter anderem eine sehr hohe positive Anisotropie der Dielektrizitätskonstanten (ε,, >ε^ , wobei ε,,
die Dielektrizitätskonstante entlang der Moleküllängsachse und ε^ die Dielektrizitätskonstante senkrecht dazu bedeuten).
In einem elektrischen Feld orientieren sich die erfindungs· gemässen Verbindungen (wegen Z11 >ε^) mit der Richtung ihrer
grössten Dielektrizitätskonstante d.h. mit ihren Längsachsen parallel zur Feldrichtung. Dieser Effekt wird u.a. in der von
J.H. Heilmeier und L.A. Zanoni [Applied Physics Letters 13,
91 (1968)] beschriebenen Wechselwirkung zwischen eingelagerten Molekülen und den flüssigkristallinen Molekülen (Guest-Host
interaction) ausgenützt. Eine weitere interessante Anwendung der dielektrischen Feldorientierung liegt in der von M. Schadt
und W. Helfrich [Applied Physics Letters JL8, (1971)] gefundenen Drehzelle sowie bei der in Molecular Crystals and Liquid
Crystals Γ7, 355 (1972) beschriebenen Kerrzelle vor.
Bei dieser elektrooptischen Drehzelle handelt es sich im wesentlichen um einen Kondensator mit lichtdurchlässigen
Elektroden, dessen Dielektrikum von einer nematischen Substanz mit Z11
> ε ^ gebildet wird. Die Moleküllängsachsen des flüssigen Kristalles sind im feldfreien Zustand schraubenförmig zwischen
den Kondensatorplatten angeordnet, wobei die Schraubenstruktur durch die vorgegebene Wandorientierung der Moleküle bestimmt
ist. Nach dem Anlegen einer elektrischen Spannung an die Kondensatorplatten stellen sich die Moleküle mit ihren Längsachsen
in Feldrichtung (d.h. senkrecht zur Plattenoberfläche) ein, wodurch linear polarisiertes Licht im Dielektrikum nicht
mehr gedreht wird (der flüssige Kristall wird senkrecht zur Oberfläche der Platten einachsig). Dieser Effekt ist reversibel
und kann dazu verwendet werden, die optische Transparenz des Kondensators elektrisch zu steuern.
In einer derartigen "Licht-Drehzelle" ist es wünschenswert, Verbindungen oder Mischungen zu benützen, welche einen
niedrigen Schwellwert besitzen. Ein niedriger Schwellwert ist

für Anwendungen, bei welchen ein kleines Volumen und ein niedriger Energiebedarf von besonderer Wichtigkeit ist, von
erheblichem Vorteil. Derartige Anforderungen werden z.B. bei Verwendung einer Drehzelle in Uhren, Taschenrechnern usw. gestellt.
Es wurde nun gefunden, dass die erfindungsgemässen Verbindungen der Formel I einen besonders niedrigen Schwellwert
besitzen. Ausserdem weisen sie nicht nur die erforderliche grosse positive Anisotropie der Dielektrizitätskonstanten und
einen tiefen Schwellwert auf, sondern zeigen insbesondere in Form ihrer Gemische untereinander oder mit anderen nematischen
oder nicht-nematlsehen Substanzen eine geringe Viskosität,
eine grosse Ansprechgeschwindigkeit und eine grosse Stabilität. Der Betrieb elektro-optischer Vorrichtungen ist dementsprechend
mit niedriger Spannung, kurzer Ansprechbarkeit und auf Grund der grossen Stabilität - mit leichter Handhabung
möglich. Ein weiterer Vorteil der erfindungsgemässen Verbindungen mit nematischen Eigenschaften liegt darin, dass sie
farblose nematische Phasen bilden.
Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Erfindung lassen sich die
folgenden Verbindungen nennen:

Unter den Verbindungen der allgemeinen Formel I sind diejenigen besonders bevorzugt, worin einer der Substituenten R,
und R2 Cyano und der andere geradkettiges Alkyl mit 5-7

bedeutet. Ganz besonders bevorzugt sind:
5-n-Heptyl-2-(4-cyanophenyl)-pyrimidin; 5-n-Pentyl-2-(4-cyanophenyl)-pyrimidin;
5-Cyano-2-(4-n-pentylphenyl)-pyrimidin;
5-Cyano-2-(4-n-hexy!phenyl)-pyrimidin;

Die Verbindungen der obigen Formel I können erfindungsgemäss
hergestellt werden, indem man

mit dem Alkalisalz von acetalisiertem Hydroxymethylen-cyanacetaldehyd
umsetzt.
Die Dehydratisierung einer Verbindung der Formel II kann mit irgend einem geeigneten Dehydratisierungsmittel wie z.B.
mit Phosphoroxychlorid, Phosphorpentoxyd, Thionylchlorid oder
Acetanhydrid durchgeführt werden. Die Dehydratisierung kann in einem inerten organischen Lösungsmittel, wie beispielsweise
einem Kohlenwasserstoff oder Halogenkohlenwasserstoff, gegebenenfalls in Gegenwart einer Base, wie Natriumacetat, Pyridin
oder Triäthanolamin, erfolgen. Sie kann jedoch auch ohne organisches Lösungsmittel durchgeführt werden.
Die Reaktionstemperatur ist die Rückflusstemperatur des
Reaktionsgemisches. Der Druck ist nicht kritisch und die Reaktion wird mit Vorteil bei Atmosphärendruck durchgeführt.
In einer weiteren Ausführungsform des erfindungsgemässen
Verfahrens wird eine Verbindung der allgemeinen Formel IiI mit Kupfer-(I)-cyanid oder Natriumcyanid umgesetzt. Diese Reaktion
wird zweckmässig in einem inerten organischen Lösungsmittel wie beispielsweise in Aethylenglykol, Tetrahydrofuran, Dimethylformamid,
Dimethylsulfoxid, Pyridin oder Acetonitril durchgeführt. Temperatur und Druck sind keine kritischen Aspekte in
dieser Reaktion. Zweckmässigerweise werden Atmosphärendruck und eine Temperatur zwischen Raumtemperatur und der Siedetemperatur
des Reaktionsgemisches angewendet. Vorzugsweise steht in der Verbindung der Formel III Y für Halogen, insbesondere für
Brom.

In einer weiteren Ausführungsform des erfindungsgemässen
Verfahrens wird eine Verbindung der allgemeinen Formel IV dehydratisiert. Die Dehydratisierung erfolgt zweckmässig mittels
Acetanhydrid oder mit wasserfreiem Natriumacetat in Eisessig. Die Reaktionstemperatur ist die Rückflusstemperatur des Reaktionsgemisches.
Der Druck ist nicht kritisch und die Reaktion wird mit Vorteil bei Atmosphärendruck durchgeführt.
In einer weiteren Ausführungsform des erfindungsgemässen
Verfahrens wird eine Verbindung der Formel V reduktiv enthalogeniert.
Die Reduktion erfolgt zweckmässig mittels Zinkstaub in einem Dioxan-Wasser-Gemisch. Die Reaktionstemperatur
ist vorzugsweise die Rückflusstemperatur des Reaktionsgemisches.
Der Druck ist nicht kritisch und die Reaktion wird mit Vorteil bei Atmosphärendruck durchgeführt.
In einer weiteren Ausführungsform des erfindungsgemässen
Verfahrens wird das Alkalisalz des acetalisierten Hydroxymethylen-cyanacetaldehyds
mit einem Amidin der Formel VI in wässriger Lösung umgesetzt und anschliessend leicht sauer gestellt.
Danach wird das Reaktionsgemisch eingedampft und der Rückstand mit Acetanhydrid versetzt. Die Reaktion wird vorzugsweise
bei einer Temperatur zwischen Raumtemperatur und etwa 1000C durchgeführt. Der Druck ist nicht kritisch, Atmosphärendruck
ist bevorzugt.
Die Herstellung der Ausgangsstoffe der Formeln II, III,
IV, V und VI wird anhand derjenigen, worin einer der Substituenten R3 und R. bzw. die Substituenten R,- und R, geradkettiges
Alkyl mit 3 bis 9 Kohlenstoffatomen sind, durch die nachstehenden Reaktionsschemata A bis E veranschaulicht, in
welchen "Alkyl" für geradkettiges Alkyl mit 3 bis 9 Kohlenstoffatomen steht.

Die Herstellung der erfindungsgemässen Verbindungen der
Formel I und der neuen Verbindungen der Formeln VIII bis XII wird anhand der folgenden Beispiele veranschaulicht.

1,9 g 4-(4-n-Heptylpyrimid-2-yl)benzoesäureamid werden in
einem Gemisch aus 40 ml Aethylenchlorid und 0,63 ml Phosphoroxychlorid
unter Rühren für 80 Minuten am Rückfluss belassen. Das mit Aether verdünnte Reaktionsgemisch wäscht man mit 2N Natronlauge,
dann mit Wasser neutral. Nach dem Eindampfen der über Natriumsulfat getrockneten organischen Phase resultieren 1,9 g
5-n-Heptyl-2-(4-cyanophenyl)pyrimidin,die am Hochvakuum
destilliert werden, Smp. 44,2-44,7°; KIp. 50,1-50,4°.
Das Ausgangsmaterial wurde wie folgt hergestellt:
0,07 Mol 2-n-Heptyl-malon-tetraäthy!acetal werden in 35 ml
Aethanol mit 0,14 Mol Wasser und 2 Tropfen konzentrierter Schwefelsäure bei 50° unter Stickstoff 15 Stunden gerührt. Durch
Ausschütteln des mit Aether verdünnten Reaktionsgemisches mit wässeriger Natriumcarbonatlösung lässt sich der als Nebenprodukt
anfallende saure 2-Heptyl-malonaldehyd vom neutralen 2-n-Heptyl-3-äthoxy-acrolein
abtrennen.
Eine Suspension aus 0,1 Mol 4-Amidino-benzoesäureäthylesterhydrochlorid,
0,1 Mol 2-n-Heptyl-3-äthoxy-acrolein und 0,14 Mol Natriumäthylat in 100 ml Methanol wird über Nacht bei Raumtemperatur
unter Stickstoff gerührt. Nach der üblichen Aufarbeitung und Auftrennung in basische und saure Anteile, erhält
man den 4-(4-n-Heptylpyrimid-2-yl)-benzoesäure-äthylester und die 4-(4-n-Heptylpyrimid-2-y1)benzoesäure.
A. 4,4 g 4-(4-n-Heptylpyrimid-2-yl)-benzoesäureäthylester
gelöst in 50 ml Methanol-Dichlormethan-(1:1)-Gemisch werden in
einem Labor-Autoklaven mit 30 ml flüssigem Ammoniak versetzt und hierauf 5 Stunden auf 90° erwärmt (Druck: 16 Atü). Das
Reaktionsgemisch wird zur Trockene eingedampft und das schwerer lösliche Amid vom nicht umgesetzten Edukt abgetrennt. Man erhält
4-(4-n-Heptylpyrimid-2-yl)-benzoesäureamid.

B. 2,3 g 4-(4-n-Heptylpyrimid-2-yl)benzoesäure und 1,9 nil
Thionylchlorid belässt man in 100 ml Benzol für 8 Stunden am Rückfluss und dampft hierauf das Reaktionsgemisch am Vakuumfilmverdampfer
zur Trockene ein. Der resultierende Rückstand wird in 50 ml Dichlormethan gelöst und in die Lösung bei
Raumtemperatur für 2 Stunden Ammoniak eingeleitet. Man erhält in praktisch quantitativer Ausbeute das 4-(4-Heptylpyrimid-2-yl)-benzoesäureamid.
In analoger Weise wurden die folgenden Benzoesäureamide hergestellt:
4-(4-n-Butylpyrimid-2-yl)-benzoesäureamid 4-(4-n-Pentylpyrimid-2-yl)-benzoesäureamid
4-(4-n-Octylpyrimid-2-yl)-benzoesäureamid.
11,23 g 4-(4-n-Butylpyrimid-2-yl)benzoesäureamid werden in
einem Gemisch aus 250 ml Aethylenchlorid und 4,5 ml Phosphoroxychlorid
unter Rühren für 90 Minuten am Rückfluss belassen. Das mit Aether verdünnte Reaktionsgemisch wäscht man mit 2N Natronlauge,
dann mit Wasser neutral. Nach dem Eindampfen der über Natriumsulfat getrockneten organischen Phase resultieren 11,77 g
5-n-Butyl-2-(4-cyanophenyDpyrimidin, die am Hochvakuum destilliert
werden, Smp. 60,9-61,8°.
0,8 g 4-(4-n-Pentylpyrimid-2-yl)benzoesäureamid werden in
einem Gemisch aus 20 ml Aethylenchlorid und 0,35 ml Phosphoroxychlorid unter Rühren für 80 Minuten am Rückfluss belassen. Das
mit Aether verdünnte Reaktionsgemisch wäscht man mit 2N Natronlauge, dann mit Wasser neutral. Nach dem Eindampfen der über
Natriumsulfat getrockneten organischen Phase resultieren 0,82 g 5-n-Pentyl-2-(4-cyanophenyl)pyrimidin, die am Hochvakuum destilliert
werden, Smp. 69,4-70,8°-, KIp. 51,9°.

15,58 g 4-(4-n-Hexylpyrimid-2-yl)benzoesäureamid werden in
einem Gemisch aus 350 ml Aethylenchlorid und 5,58 ml Phosphoroxychlorid
unter Rühren für 90 Minuten am Rückfluss belassen. Das mit Aether verdünnte Reaktionsgemisch wäscht man mit 2N Natronlauge,
dann mit Wasser neutral. Nach dem Eindampfen der über Natriumsulfat getrockneten organischen Phase resultieren 14,6 g
5-n-Hexyl-2-(4-cyanophenyl)pyrimidin, die am Hochvakuum destilliert
werden, Smp. 53,5-54,5°j KIp. 35,5-36,5°.
Das Ausgangsmaterial wurde wie folgt hergestellt:
0,1 Mol 2-n-Hexyl-malon-tetraäthylacetal werden in 40 ml
Aethanol mit 0,2 Mol Wasser und 3 Tropfen konzentrierter Schwefelsäure bei 50° unter Stickstoff 18 Stunden gerührt. Durch
Ausschütteln des mit Aether verdünnten Reaktionsgemisches mit wässeriger Natriumcarbonatlösung lässt sich der als Nebenprodukt
anfallende saure 2-Hexyl-malonaldehyd vom neutralen 2-n-Hexyl-3-äthoxy-acrolein
abtrennen.
89 g 4-Methylimido-benzoesäuremethylester-hydrochlorid,
suspendiert in 150 ml Methanol, werden bei -40 mit 60 ml flüssigem Ammoniak versetzt, in einen Laborautoklaven gegeben,
30 Atmosphären Stickstoff aufgedrückt und 24 Stunden bei 70° belassen. Das auskristallisierte Produkt wird abfiltriert, mit
Hexan gewaschen und bei 40° am Vakuum (14 mm) getrocknet. Es resultieren 72 g 4-Amidino-benzoesäureamid-hydrochlorid.
0,082 Mol 4-Amidino-benzoesäureamid-hydrochlorid, suspendiert
in einer Lösung aus 0,082 Mol 2-n-Hexyl-3-äthoxy-acrolein und 0,14 Mol Natriummethylat in 150 ml Methanol,werden über
Nacht bei Raumtemperatur unter Stickstoff gerührt. Der durch Verdünnen des Reaktionsgemisches mit 3 1 Aether erhaltene
Niederschlag wird abfiltriert, mit Wasser neutral gewaschen und bei 40° im Vakuumtrockenschrank getrocknet. Es resultieren
17,9 g 4- (4-n-Hexylpyrimid-2-y,l)benzoesäureamid, Smp. 231,6-233,0°.

1,84 g 4-(4-n-Octylpyrimid-2-yl)benzoesäureamid werden in
einem Gemisch aus 40 ml Aethylenchlorid und 0,63 ml Phosphoroxychlorid
unter Rühren für 80 Minuten am Rückfluss belassen. Das mit Aether verdünnte Reaktionsgemisch wäscht man mit 2N Natronlauge,
dann mit Wasser neutral. Nach dem Eindampfen der über Natriumsulfat getrockneten organischen Phase resultieren 1,91 g
5-n-Octyl-2-(4-cyanophenyl) pyrimidin, die am Hockvakuum destilliert
werden, Smp. 66,1-66,5°; KIp. 47,5°.
3,26 g (16,9 mMol) rohes Natriumsalz von Hydroxymethylencyanacetaldehyd-diäthylacetal
werden in 20 ml Wasser unter Rühren gelöst, 4,51 g (22,7 mMol) p-n-Propylbenzamidin-hydrochlorid
zugegeben und die alkalisch reagierende Lösung mit 3N Salzsäure (1 ml) auf pH 4-5 gestellt. Nach 5-minütigem Rühren
wird das Reaktionsgemisch im Vakuum bei 50 zur Trockene eingeengt und der Rückstand mit 50 ml Essigsäureanhydrid 16 Stunden
bei Raumtemperatur stehengelassen. Danach wird 1 Stunde auf 100 erwärmt, das Reaktionsgemisch im Vakuum eingedampft und
der Rückstand (braunes OeI, teilweise kristallisierend) in Methylenchlorid aufgenommen und an Kieselgel chromatographiert.
Methylenchlorid und Methylenchlorid/2% Aceton eluieren das
5-Cyano-2-(4-n-propylphenyl)-pyrimidin, das bis zum konstanten
Schmelzpunkt aus Aceton/Hexan umkristallisiert und dann im Hochvakuum bei 120° sublimiert wird. Man erhält farblose Kristalle
vom Schmelzpunkt 125,9-126,0°, die beim Abkühlen bei 106,4° flüssigkristallin (monotrop) sind.
Das Natriumsalz von Hydroxymethylen-cyanacetaldehyd-diäthylacetal kann folgendermassen hergestellt werden:
Zu einer Suspension von 7,4 g (0,322 g-Atome) pulverisiertem Natrium in 500 ml abs. Aether tropft man unter Rühren ein Ge-

misch von 40,9 g (0,285 Mol) Cyanacetaldehyd-diäthylacetal,
26,2 g (0,353 Mol) Ameisensäureäthylester und 100 ml abs. Aether und rührt bis zum Verschwinden des Natriums bei Raumtemperatur
(16 Stunden). Danach lässt man den gebildeten braunen Niederschlag (rohes Natriumsalz von Hydroxymethylencyanacetaldehyd-diäthylacetal)
absitzen, dekantiert die überstehende Lösung ab und wäscht durch zweimaliges Dekantieren mit
je 200 ml abs. Aether. Das Produkt wird unter abs. Aether bei
0 aufbewahrt, da es sich beim Trocknen verändert.
Ein Gemisch von 13,0 g (42,6 Mol) 2-(p-n-Propylphenyl)-4-chlor-5-pyrimidincarbonsäureäthylester,
1,1 g Palladiumkohle (5%), 6,3 g (64,0 mMol) Kaliumacetat (wasserfrei) und 175 ml
Dioxan wird bei Raumtemperatur bis zur Aufnahme von 1 Mol Wasserstoff hydriert (Dauer 92 Stunden). Man filtriert vom
Katalysator ab, dampft das Filtrat im Vakuum ein, trennt ev. vorhandenes Ausgangsprodukt durch Chromatographie an Kieselgel
(Lösungsmittel Benzol und Benzol/2% Aceton) ab. Der reine farblose 2-(p-n-Propylphenyl)-5-pyrimidincarbonsäureäthylester
schmilzt nach Destillation im Hochvakuum bei 130° (Kugelrohr) bei 93,5-94,5°.
9,3 g (34,4 mMol) 2-(p-n-Propylphenyl)-5-pyrimidincarbonsäureäthylester
werden mit einer Lösung von 16,0 g Natriumhydroxyd in 107 ml Wasser nach Zusatz von 21,5 ml Aethanol
1 Stunde unter Rückfluss gekocht. Nach dem Abkühlen wird mit
82 ml 20%iger Salzsäure kongosauer gestellt, die ausgeschiedene 2-(p-n-Propylphenyl)-5-pyrimidincarbonsäure abgetrennt, mit
Wasser gewaschen, getrocknet und roh weiter umgesetzt.

gesättigten Lösung von 200 ml abs. Dioxan gegeben, wobei sich ein farbloser Niederschlag bildet. Danach wird noch
während 4 Stunden Ammoniak in das Reaktionsgemisch eingeleitet, über Nacht bei Raumtemperatur stehengelassen, im Vakuum abgedampft
und der Rückstand mit 100 ml Wasser 30 Minuten gerührt. Der Niederschlag wird abgetrennt, mit Wasser gewaschen und getrocknet.
Das erhaltene rohe 2-(p-n-Propylphenyl)-5-pyrimidincarboxamid
kann zur Reinigung im Hochvakuum bei 170° subliminiert
werden, Smp. ab 255,1° (Zers.).
8,3 g (34,4 mMol) 2-(p-n-Propylphenyl)-5-pyrimidincarboxamid
werden unter Feuchtigkeitsausschluss mit 100 ml Phosphoroxychlorid 2 Stunden unter Rückfluss gekocht. Danach wird das
überschüssige Reagens im Vakuum entfernt und noch zweimal mit Toluol im Vakuum abgedampft. Der Rückstand wird in Methylenchlorid
aufgenommen und an'100 g Kieselgel in Methylenchlorid chromatographiert. Methylenchlorid und Methylenchlorid/2% Aceton
eluieren das 5-Cyano-2-(4-n-propylphenyl)-pyrimidin, das bis
zum konstanten Schmelzpunkt aus Aceton/Hexan umkristallisiert und im Hochvakuum .bei 120° sublimiert wird. Das reine farblose
Produkt schmilzt bei 125,9-126,0° und ist beim Abkühlen bei 106,4 flüssigkristallin (monotrop). Die Substanz ist mit der
nach Beispiel 6 gewonnenen Verbindung identisch.

schmilzt nach Destillation im Hochvakuum bei 125° bei 86,8-87,1°.
9,3 g (32,7 mMol) 2-(p-n-Butylphenyl)-5-pyrimidincarbonsäureäthylester
werden mit einer Lösung von 15,2 g Natriumhydroxyd in 100 ml Wasser nach Zusatz von 20 ml Aethanol wie im
Beispiel 7 umgesetzt und aufgearbeitet. Die trockene 2-(p-n-Butylphenyl)-S-pyrimidincarbonsäure
wird roh weiter umgesetzt.

Zink abgetrennt und mit Dioxan gewaschen. Filtrat und Waschflüssigkeit
werden im Vakuum van Dioxan befreit und die wässerige Suspension mit
Ifethylenchlorid extrahiert. Der nach Trocknen und Einengen der organischen
Phase verbleibende Rückstand wird an Kieselgel chromatographiert. Methylenchlorid
und Methylenchlorid/2% Aceton eluieren das 5-Cyano-2-(4-n-propylphenyl)-pyrimidin,
das bis zum konstanten Schmelzpunkt aus Aceton/Hexan umkristallisiert und im Hochvakuum bei 120° sublimiert wird. Man erhält farblose
Kristalle von Schmelzpunkt 125,9-126,0°, die beim Abkühlen bei 106,4°
flüssigkristallin (monotrop) sind. Die Substanz ist mit der nach Beispiel 6 gewonnenen Verbindung identisch.

und nach der Reaktion aufgearbeitet. Das 5-Cyano-2-(4-äthoxyphenyl) -pyrimidin stellt farblose Kristalle dar, Srap. 152,6-153,0°
die beim Abkühlen bei 149,7° nematisch (monotrop) sind.

und nach der Reaktion aufgearbeitet. Das 5-Cyano-2-(4-n-propoxyphenyl) -pyrimidin stellt farblose Kristalle dar, Smp. 146,2-146,6°
die beim Abkühlen bei 137,0° nematisch (monotrop) sind.

Reaktion von p-n-Propoxybenzamidin-hydrochlorid mit a-Aethoxymethylen-a-cyanessigsäureäthylester
und Natriumäthylat in Aethanol und dann mit Natronlauge liefert das 5-Cyano-4-hydroxy-2-(4-n-propoxyphenyl)-pyrimidin
(Smp. 255,3-256,5°). Dieses wird wie dort beschrieben mit Phosphoroxychlorid zum
Ausgangsmaterial vom Schmelzpunkt 193,3-194,4° umgesetzt.
4,1 g (14,2 mMol) 4-Chlor-5-cyano-2-(4-n-butoxyphenyl)-pyrimidin werden in 190 ml 50%igem Dioxan mit 16,4 g (0,251 g-Atome)
vorbehandeltem Zinkstaub wie in Beispiel 13 umgesetzt und nach der Reaktion aufgearbeitet. Das reine farblose
5-Cyano-2-(4-n-butoxyphenyl)-pyrimidin schmilzt bei 119,1-120,0° und besitzt einen Klärpunkt von 139,3°. Die Substanz
ist mit der nach Beispiel 12 gewonnenen Verbindung identisch.

(smektisch), bei 102,1° nematisch, bei 133,2° Klärpunkt.

(Smp. 213,5-215,5 ). Dieses wird wie dort beschrieben mit Phosphoroxychlorid zum
Ausgangsmaterial vom Schmelzpunkt 140,5-142,0° umgesetzt.
3,0 g (9,5 mMol) 4-Chlor-5-cyano-2-(4-n-hexyloxyphenyl)-pyrimidin
werden in 125 ml 50%igem Dioxan mit 11,0 g (0,168 g-Atome) vorbehandeltem Zinkstaub wie in Beispiel 13 umgesetzt
und nach, der Reaktion aufgearbeitet. Das 5-Cyano-2- (4-nhexyloxyphenyl)-pyrimidin
stellt farblose Kristalle dar, Smp. 93,5- 93,8° (smektisch), bei 121,2° nematisch, bei 134,0°
Klärpunkt.

6,3 g (20,9 mMol) 4-Chlor-5-cyano-2-(4-n-heptyloxyphenyl) pyrimidin
werden in 275 ml 50%igem Dioxan mit 23,9 g (0,366 g-Atome)
vorbehandeltem Zinkstaub wie in Beispiel 13 umgesetzt und nach der Reaktion aufgearbeitet. Das 5-Cyano-2-(4-n-heptyloxyphenyl)-pyrimidin
stellt farblose Kristalle dar, Smp. 102,4° (smektisch), bei 126,9° nematisch, bei 129,5° Klärpunkt.
Das Ausgangsmaterial kann nach den Angaben von A.R.Todd und- F.Bergel, J.Chem. Soc. 1937. 365 erhalten werden:
Reaktion von p-n-HeptyloxybenzaMdin-hydrcchlorid mit ot-Aethoxymethylena-cyanessigsäureäthylester
und Natriumäthylat in Aethanol und
dann mit Natronlauge liefert das 5-Cyano-4-hydroxy-2-(4-nheptyloxyphenyl)-pyrimidin
(Smp. 180,8°, bis 231,5° smektisch (KIp.)). Dieses wird wie dort beschrieben mit Phosphoroxychlorid
zum Ausgangsmaterial vom Schmelpunkt 133,3 - 134,6° umgesetzt.
Das durch Kochen von 5,3 g (22,8 mMol) p-n-Hexylzimtsäure
mit Thionylchlorid erhaltene rohe p-n-Hexylzimtsäurechlorid
wird in 35 ml abs. Benzol gelöst und zu 2,9 g (24,5 mMol) p-Hydroxybenzonitril in 40 ml abs. Pyridin gegeben. Dann wird
über Nacht auf 50° erwärmt. Das Reaktionsgemisch wird auf Eiswasser gegossen und dreimal mit Aether extrahiert. Die
vereinigten organischen Phasen werden mit verdünnter Salzsäure gewaschen. Unreagierte Ausgangsmaterialien werden mit
verdünnter Natronlauge abgetrennt und die Esterlösung neutral gewaschen. Das Rohprodukt wird mehrmals aus Hexan umkristalli-

siert und man erhält den reinen p-n-Hexylzimtsäure-p'-cyanophenylester,
Smp. 71,5°, KIp. 106,5°.
Das Ausgangsmaterial kann wie folgt hergestellt werden:
9,4 g (49,5 mMol) p-n-Hexy!benzaldehyd werden in 5 ml
abs. Pyridin mit 5,15 (49,5 mMol) Malonsäure und 5 Tropfen Piperidin versetzt. Dann erwärmt man 11 Stunden auf 100°,
giesst anschliessend auf kalte, wässrige Salzsäure und extrahiert mit Aether. Die nach Umkristallisieren des Rohproduktes
aus Hexan/Aether erhaltene p-n-Hexylzimtsäure hat
einen Schmelzpunkt von 107-109°.
Ein Gemisch von 6,1 g (53,9 mMol) p-Formylphenylkohlensäuremethylester
und 4,0 g (33,9 mMol) p-Aminobenzonitril wird in 100 ml Benzol mit Argon begast und während 1 Stunde unter
Rückfluss erhitzt (Badtemperatur 135°). Das entstehende Wasser wird mit einem Wasserabscheider abgetrennt. Während einer
weiteren Stunde wird nun das im Rückflusskühler kondensierende Benzol durch eine Schicht von 100 g Aluminiumoxid (Akt. I)
in das Reaktionsgefäss zurückgeleitet. Nach dem Abkühlen wird das Reaktionsgemisch im Vakuum bei 50° Badtemperatur vom
Lösungsmittel befreit. Es verbleiben 9,3 g praktisch farblose Kristalle, die bis zum konstanten Schmelzpunkt und Klärpunkt
und bis zum Verschwinden der Nebenprodukte im G-aschromatogramm
mehrmals aus Isopropanol umkristallisiert werden. Das erhaltene reine farblose p-[ΪΓ-(p-Cyanophenyl)formimidoyl]phenyl-methy1-carbonat
besitzt einen Schmelzpunkt von 139,0-139,2° und einen Klärpunkt von 156,0°. TJV (EtOH) :ε27/, = 2400 (Schultern bei
315 und 234 nm; Minimum bei 242 nm).

Ein Gemisch von 0,835 g (5,0 mMol) p-Methoxycarbonyloxyanilin
und 0,655 g (5,0 mMol) p-Cyanobenzaldehyd wird in 50 ml Benzol mit Argon begast und während 1 Stunde unter
Rückfluss erhitzt (Badtemperatur IJO0). Das entstehende Wasser
wird mit einem Wasserabscheider abgetrennt. Während einer weiteren Stunde wird nun das im Rückflusskühler kondensierende
Benzol durch eine Schicht von 20 g Aluminiumoxid (Akt. I) in das Reaktionsgefäss zurückgeleitet. Nach dem Abkühlen wird
das Reaktionsgemisch im Vakuum bei 50° Badtemperatur vom Lösungsmittel befreit. Es verbleiben 1,395 g gelbliche
Kristalle, die bis zum konstanten Schmelzpunkt und Klärpunkt und bis zum Verschwinden der Nebenprodukte im G-aschromatograrnm
mehrmals aus Isopropanol umkristallisiert werden. Das erhaltene reine, leicht gelbliche p-[(p-Cyanobenzyliden)amino]pheny1-methylcarbonat
zeigt den Schmelzpunkt 145,1-146,2° und den Klärpunkt 163,4°. UV (EtOH): ε2?0 = 20250, ε,2· = 10800
(Schultern bei 243 und 221 mm; Minima bei 312 und 233
5,66 g p-Cyanophenol (47,6 mMol) werden in 66 ml abs. Pyrldln
gelöst und unter Rühren auf -10° gekühlt. Im Verlaufe von 10 Minuten gibt man portionenweise insgesamt 8,6 g (37,7 mMol)
rohes p-Carbäthoxy-oxybenzoylchlorid zu. Die Temperatur steigt
auf 0° und es fällt Pyridin-hydrochlorid aus. Anschliessend wird über Nacht bei Raumtemperatur gerührt und die Suspension
auf eine Mischung von 200 ml Eis und 200 ml 205&-iger Salzsäure
gegossen. Man extrahiert dreimal mit Aethylacetat, wäscht mit Wasser, trocknet über Natriumsulfat und dampft im Vakuum
ein. Die als Rückstand erhaltenen 12,4 g rötlichen Kristalle werden in Benzol gelöst und an 400 g Silicagel chromatographiert»
Benzol/l^ Aeeton (v/v) eluieren 8,1 g gelbliehe Kristalle, die

bis zum konstanten Schmelzpunkt und Klärpunkt aus Aceton/Hexan umkristallisiert werden. Das erhaltene reine p-[(p-Cyanophenoxy)
carbonyl]phenyl-äthylcarbonat schmilzt bei 144,7-144,8° und
ist beim Abkühlen bei 115,8° flüssigkristallin (monotrop). UV (EtOH): ε241 =29700.
Das Ausgangsmaterial wird wie folgt hergestellt:
Man lässt nach der Methode von E. Fischer, Ber. £L,
2877 (1908) Chlorameisensäureäthylester auf p-Hydroxybenzoesäure in Gegenwart von 1 N-Natronlauge einwirken. Man erhält
kristalline p-Carbäthoxy-oxybenzoesäure, welche nach den Angaben von H. Schönenberger et al. Arzneimittelforschung
14,324 (1964) mit Thionylchlorid behandelt wird. Nach dem
Entfernen des überschüssigen Thionylchlorids im Vakuum erhält man rohes p-Carbäthoxy-oxybenzoylchlorid, welches wie
oben beschreiben, direkt weiter umgesetzt wird.
0,390 g (2,0 mMol) 4'-Cyano-4-hydroxy-biph.enyl werden in
4,0 ml abs. Pyridin gelöst und unter Rühren auf -10° gekühlt. Im Verlaufe von 2 Minuten tropft man 0,255 g (2,4 mMol) Buttersäurechlorid
zu. Die Temperatur steigt auf 0° und es fällt Pyridin-hydrochlorid aus. Anschliessend wird über Nacht bei
Raumtemperatur gerührt und die Suspension auf eine Mischung von 12 g Eis und 12 ml 20%iger Salzsäure gegossen. Man extrahiert
dreimal mit Aethylacetat, wäscht mit ¥asser, trocknet über Natriumsulfat und dampft im Vakuum ein. Die als Rückstand erhaltenen
0,552 g gelblichen Kristalle werden in Benzol gelöst und an 40 g Silicagel chromatographiert. Benzol eluiert 0,521 g
gelbliche Kristalle, die bis zum konstanten Schmelzpunkt und Klärpunkt aus Aceton/Hexan umkristallisiert werden. Das erhaltene
reine 4t-Cyano-4-biphenyl·yl butyrat schmilzt bei 77,9-78,2°

und ist "beim Abkühlen bei 74,7° flüssigkristallin (monotrop),

13. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man 5-Cyano-2-(4-n-butyloxyphenyl)-pyrimdin herstellt.
14. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man 5-Cyano-2-(4-n-pentyloxyphenyl)-pyrimidin·herstellt.
15. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass man 5-Cyano-2-(4-n-hexyloxyphenyl)-pyrimidin herstellt.

und Methylhydrochinon-di-p-n-butylbenzoat
besteht.

28. Nematisches Gemisch nach Anspruch 2CV dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass es aus 5-n-Heptyl-2-(4-cyanophenyl)-pyrimidin,

29. Nematisches Gemisch nach Anspruch 20, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass es aus 4'-n-Pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl, 4l-n-Heptyl-4-cyanobiphenyl
und 5-Cyano-2-(4-n-butyloxypheny1)-pyrimidin
besteht.
30. Nematisches Gemisch nach Anspruch 20, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
dass es aus 4'-n-Pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl, 4·-n-Heptyl-4-cyanobiphenyl
und 5-Cyano-2-(4-n-pentylphenyl)-pyrimidin besteht.
31. Nematisches Gemisch nach Anspruch 20, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
dass es aus 4'-n-Pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl, 4'-n-Heptyl-4-cyanobiphenyl
und 5-Cyano-2-(4-n-hexylphenyl)-pyrimidin besteht.
32. Nematisches Gemisch nach Anspruch ^0, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
dass es aus 4'-n-Pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl, 4'-n-Heptyl-4-cyanobiphenyl,
5-Cyano-2-(4-n-pentyloxypheny1)-pyrimidin und 5-Cyano-2-(4-n-hexylphenyl)-pyrimidin besteht."
33. Nematisches Gemisch nach Anspruch 20, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
dass es aus 4'-n-Pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl, 4'-n-Heptyl-4-cyanobiphenyl,
5-Cyano-2-(4-n-butylphenyl)-pyrimidin, 5-Cyano-2-(4-n-pentylphenyl)-pyrimidin
und 5-Cyano-2-(4-n-hexyl·-
phenyl)-pyrimidin besteht.
