Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A phenylpyrimidine derivative of the formula (R is 2W4C straight chain alkyl).
EXAMPLE: 2-(4-Cyanophenyl)-5-n-propylpyrimidine.
USE: A stable liquid crystal for a display element, having a great effect of imparting a dielectric anisotropy, and capable of reducing the driving voltage simply by adding a small amount thereof to a liquid crystalline composition.
PROCESS: p-Cyanobenzoic acid is reacted with ethanol in the presence of sulfuric acid to give ethyl p-cyanobenzoate, which is then reacted with hydrogen chloride gas to afford a compound. The resultant compound is then reacted with ammonia gas to afford 4-ethoxycarbonylbenzamidine hydrochloride, which is reacted with a diethyl n-alkylmalonate. The resultant reaction product is then reacted with phosphorus oxychloride, dehalogenated with magnesium oxide and hydrogen gas, hydrolyzed and reacted with ammonia. The resultant compound is then dehydrated with phosphorus oxychloride to give the exemplified compound for the compound of the formula.
