Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A cyclohexylcinnamonitrile derivative liquid crystal compound of formula I: (R is 1-8C alkyl group; formula II is cycloalkyl group).
EXAMPLE: Trans-4-n-Propyl-1-(4'-trans-β-cinnamonitrile)-cyclohexane.
USE: Useful as liquid crystals for display units operating on the Schadt-Helfrich effect in twisted nematic elements, capable of giving compositions having nematic liquid crystal phases and a wide range of application, with improved response characteristics.
PROCESS: Trans-4-n-Propyl-1-(4'-formyl-phenyl)-cycohexane is reacted with malonic acid in pyridine under heating to give a cinnamic acid derivative, which is dissolved in SOCl2 and reacted with aqueous ammonia to form a cinnamamide. The amide is reacted with tosyl chloride to give the objective compound.
