Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:4-Fluorobenzoic ester derivatives of formula I (wherein X is a group of formula II or III; R is 1W15C alkyl, alkoxy).
USE: The compounds are used together with other liquid crystal compd. to form liquid crystal compsn. which produces a liquid crystal display device in which dielectric anisotropy is small and whose driving voltage is low.
PREPARATION: 4-Fluorobenzoic acid is reacted with thionyl chloride to produce 4- fluorobozoyl chloride which is then reacted with a 4-substd. phenol or a trans-4- substd. cyclohexanol (corresponding to the substituent of the desired product) in the presence of pyridine to obtain the compound of formula IV or V.
