Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:The 4-alkoxycinnamic acid 4'-fluorophenyl ester of formula I (R is 1W10C alkyl; X is H or CH3) and its derivative.
EXAMPLE: 4-Propoxycinnamic acid 4'-fluorophenyl ester.
USE: A liquid crystal compound useful as a component of a liquid crystal composition. The compound has a dielectric anisotropy (Δε) of about 3W4, and addition of the compound to a liquid composition having negative or small positive Δε makes its Δε positive, and enables the control of the working characteristics of a display element.
PROCESS: Reaction of cinnamic acid of formula II or α-methylcinnamic acid with oxalyl chloride affords the acid chloride of formula III, which is made to react with 4-fluorophenol in the presence of pyridine to obtain the objective compound of formula I.
