Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A phenylcinnamoyl nitrile derivative of the formula (R is 1W8C alkyl, or alkoxy group).
EXAMPLE: p-n-Pentylphenyl-p'-trans-β-cinnamoyl nitrile.
USE: Constituents of liquid crystal mixtures used for producing photoelectric display units, particularly operating on the Schadt-Helfrich effect of twisted nematic (TN) elements.
PROCESS: The cyano group of a p-cyano-p'-alkylbiphenyl is changed into a formyl group, and reacted with malonic acid in the presence of pyridine to give an p-alkylphenyl-p'-β-cinnamic acid, which is converted into a cinnamamide derivative via a cinnamic acid chloride derivative. The cinnamamide derivative is dehydrated with tosyl chloride to give the objective compound of formula I.
