Die neuen Carboxyalkylester der vorliegenden Erfindung besitzen die allgemeine Formel

in welcher die Reste M, M' und M", jeder für sich, Wasserstoff,
Alkalimetall, Erdalkalimetall, die Ammonium- oder organische Ammonium-Gruppen bedeuten.
Bevorzugte erfindungsgemäße Verbindungen sind diejenigen Verbindungen, in welchen zumindest einer der Reste M, M'
und M" ' Alkalimetall, Erdalkalimetall, die Ammonium- oder eine organische Ammonium-Gruppe darstellt.
Die neuen Carboxyalkylester der vorliegenden Erfindung werden durch Reaktion von N-Phosphonomethylglycin mit einem
Lacton,. wie beispielsweise Propiolacton, in wässeriger Lösung in Anwesenheit einer Base und anschließender Neutralisation
der Base mit Chlorwasserstoffsäure hergestellt. Die verschiedenartigen Salze werden durch Behandeln der freien
Säure mit einer geeigneten Base erhalten.
Die Temperatur der Reaktion wird normalerweise auf einen Wert von etwa 20 0C gehalten, obwohl höhere oder niedrigere

Temperaturen möglich sind.
Die Reihenfolge der Zugabe der Reaktionsteilnehmer ist entscheidend.
Es ist wesentlich, daß man das Lacton zu einer basischen, wässerigen Lösung des N-Phosphonomethylglycins
zugibt. Es wird zur bequemeren und leichteren Isolierung des Produktes bevorzugt, gleiche molare Mengen von Lacton und
N-Phosphonomethylglycin einzusetzen.
Die Reaktion wird normalerweise bei atmosphärischem Druck durchgeführt, obwohl höhere und niedrigere Drucke ebenfalls
angewandt werden können.
Der Ausdruck "Alkalimetall" schließt Lithium, Natrium, Kalium, Cäsium und Rubidium ein; und der Ausdruck "Erdalkalimetall"
umfaßt Beryllium, Magnesium, Calcium, Strontium und Barium.
Die von der obigen Formel umfaßten organischen Ammoniumsalze sind solche, die aus organischen Aminen von niederem Molekulargewicht
hergestellt worden sind, d. h. solche mit einem Molekulargewicht von unterhalb etwa 300. Derartige organische.
Amine umfassen die Alkylamine, Alkylenamine und Alkanolamine mit nicht mehr als 2 Aminogruppen, wie beispielsweise Methylamin,
Äthylamin, n-Propylamin, Isopropylamin, n-Butylamin,
Isobutylamin, sek.-Butylamin, n-Amylamin, Isoamylamin,

Die folgenden Beispiele dienen zur weiteren Erläuterung der Erfindung. In den Beispielen sind alle Teile und Prozentangaben
Gewichtsteile bzw. Gewichtsprozente, es sei denn, daß ausdrücklich etwas anderes angegeben ist.
In einen Rundkolben mit einem Passungsvermögen von 500 ml
wurde N-Phosphonomethylglycin (17 g), Wasser (200 ml) und

Natriumhydroxid (12 g) eingefüllt und die Mischung so lange gerührt, bis eine klare Lösung erhalten wurde. Die Lösung
wurde auf 20 0C abgekühlt und Propiolacton (8 g) im Verlaufe
eines Zeitraums von 15 Minuten unter Rühren zugegeben. Das Rühren wurde noch 1 Stunde lang bei Raumtemperatur
fortgesetzt. Die Reaktionsmischung wurde mit Chlorwasserstoff säure angesäuert, wobei sich unter Bildung einer wässerigen
Aufschlämmung ein Feststoff bildete. Dieser wurde durch Filtration entfernt und getrocknet. Der Feststoff wurde als
2-Carboxyäthyl-N-phosphonomethylglycinat (Verbindung I;
Schmelzpunkt 211 0C unter Zersetzung) identifiziert und gab

Beispiel 2
Eine wässerige Lösung des Bis—(isopropylamin)-Salzes des 2-Carboxyäthyl-N-phosphonomethylglycinates wurde wie folgt
hergestellt:
2-Carboxyäthyl-N-phosphonomethylglycinat (4,04 g) wurde in
Wasser ( 5,0 g) aufgeschlämmt. Zu der Mischung wurde unter
Kühlen Isopropylamin (1,92 g) zugefügt, und man erhielt eine

wässerige Lösung des Bis-(isopropylamin)-Salzes von 2-Carboxyäthyl-N-phosphonomethylglycinat
(Verbindung II).
Beispiel 3
Eine wässerige Lösung von Glycin, 2-Carboxyäthylester-N-(dinatriumphosphonomethyI)
wurde wie folgt hergestellt. 2-Carboxyäthyl-N-phosphonomethylglycinat (4,04 g) wurde in
Wasser (5,28 g) aufgeschlämmt. Zu der Mischung wurde unter
Kühlung Natriumhydroxid (1,36 g) zur Bildung einer wässerigen Lösung, enthaltend Dinatrium-(2-carboxyäthyl)-N-(phosphonomethyl)-glycinat
(Verbindung III) zugegeben. Es können nach den Verfahren der Beispiele 2 und 3 und unter
Verwendung der richtigen Base oder Ammoηiumνerbindung, eines
Verhältnisses von 1 oder 2 Äquivalenten der Base für jedes Äquivalent des 2-Carboxyäthyl-N-phosphonomethylglycinates
die folgenden Salze hergestellt werden:
Monobutylamin-Salz des 2-Carboxyäthyl-N-rphosphonomethylglycinates,
Mono(trimethylamin)-Salz des 2-Carboxyäthyl-N-phosphonomethylglycinates,
Mono(diäthylentriamin)-Salz des 2-Carboxyäthyl-N-phosphonomethylglycinates,
Monoisopropylamin-Salz des 2-Cärboxyäthyl-N-phosphonomethylglycinates,

Die herbicide Aktivität nach dem Auflaufen der Verbindungen der vorliegenden Erfindung wird wie folgt gezeigt. Die aktiven
Bestandteile wurden auf 14 oder 21 Tage alte Exemplare der
verschiedenen Planzenarten aufgesprüht. Die Sprühlösung war eine wässerige Lösung, enthaltend den aktiven Bestandteil
und ein oberflächenaktives Mittel (35 Teile Butylamin-Salz
der Dodecylbenzolsulfonsäure und 65 Teile eines Kondensates
von Tallöl mit Äthylenoxid im Verhältnis von 11 Mol Äthylenoxid zu 1 Mol Tallöl), welche auf die Planzen in verschiedenen
Sätzen von Pfannen in verschiedenen Verhältnissen [pounds of active ingredient per acre (kg/ha)] aufgebracht wird.
Die behandelten Pflanzen werden in ein Gewächshaus gebracht

und die Wirkungen beobachtet und nach annähernd 2 Wochen oder annähernd 4 Wochen aufgezeichnet, wie dies in der nachfolgenden
Tabelle angegeben ist.

Aus Gründen der Kürze und der Einfachheit wird der Ausdruck "aktiver Bestandteil" nachfolgend in dieser Beschreibung
für die vorstehend beschriebenen Carboxyalkylester der N-Phosphonomethylglycin-Derivate der vorliegenden Erfindung
benutzt.
Der aktive Bestandteil kann in herbiciden Zubereitungen mit einem oder mehreren Adjuvantien vermischt vorliegen,

die feste oder flüssige Streckmittel, Träger, Verdünnungsmittel,
Konditioniermittel und dergleichen sein können. Die herbiciden Formulierungen umfassen benetzbare Pulver, wässerige
Suspensionen, Staubformulierungen, emulgierbare öle und Lösungen in Lösungsmitteln. Im allgemeinen können alle
diese Formulierungen ein oder mehrere oberflächenaktive Mittel enthalten.
Oberflächenaktive Mittel, die man in herbiciden Formulierungen verwenden kann, sind dem Fachmann wohl bekannt und bereits
in US-Patentschriften, Bulletins und Lehrbüchern beschrieben.
Die Herstellung, die Formulierungen und die Teilchengröße der benetzbaren Pulver, der wässerigen Suspensionen, der
Stäube, der emulgierbaren öle und der Lösungen in Lösungsmitteln sind ebenso dem Fachmann bekannt und bereits beschrieben.
Der aktive Bestandteil ist gewöhnlich in den herbiciden Zubereitungen in einer Menge im Bereich von etwa 0,5 bis
95 Gewichtsteilen pro 100 Gewichtsteile der benetzbaren Pulver- und Staubformulierungen, und in einer Menge im
Bereich von 5 bis 95 Gewichtsteilen pro 100 Gewichtsteile der emulgierbaren Öl-Formulierungen zugegen. Vom Fachmann

können selbstverständlich auch leicht Formulierungen hergestellt werdenj welche andere als die vorstehend angegebenen Mengen an aktivem Bestandteil enthalten.
Das Aufbringen der herbiciden Zubereitung der vorliegenden
Erfindung auf die Pflanze ist dem Fachmann wohl bekannt. Das Aufbringen von flüssigen und teilchenförmigen Feststoff-Herbicidformulierungen
auf die aus dem Boden herausragenden Teile der Pflanzen kann mittels herkömmlicher
Verfahren durchgeführt werden, z.B. mittels Motorzerstäubern, Handsprühern und Sprühzerstäubern.
Der aktive Bestandteil kann mit einem oder mehreren Adjuvantien, die feste oder flüssige Streckmittel, Träger,
Verdünnungsmittel, Konditioniermittel und dergleichen sein können, zur Herstellung herbicider Zubereitungen vermischt
werden. Herbicide Formulierungen enthalten die aktiven Bestandteile der vorliegenden Erfindung mit benetzbaren Pulvern,
wässerigen Suspensionen, Staubformulierungen, emulgierbaren ölen und Lösungen in Lösungsmitteln. Im allgemeinen
können alle diese Formulierungen ein oder mehrere oberflächenaktive Mittel enthalten. Herbicide Mischungen werden in einem
Verhältnis von 1 bis 50 pounds pro acre (1,12 bis 56,04 kg/ ha) an aktiven Bestandteilen für einen allgemeinen herbiciden
Effekt aufgebracht.

Der Fachmann kann nach Kenntnisnahme der im einzelnen beschriebenen,
erläuterten Ausführungsformen der vorliegenden
Erfindung ohne weiteres verschiedene andere Modifikationen durchführen, ohne den Rahmen der vorliegenden Erfindung zu
verlassen. Demzufolge ist nicht beabsichtigt, daß der Umfang der nachfolgenden Patentansprüche durch die Beispiele

Ammonium oder ein organischer Ammonium-Rest ist, die Reste M1 und M" Wasserstoff, Alkalimetall, Erdalkalimetall,
einen Ammonium- oder organischen Ammonium-Rest bedeuten, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß man eine Mischung von N-Phosphonomethylglycin, Wasser
und einer Base herstellt und die Mischung mit Propiolacton in die Verbindung überführt.
12. Verfahren nach Anspruch 11, dadurch gekennzeichnet , daß man die Temperatur auf einen Wert von
etwa 20 0C hält.
