Abstract

횡전계 액정표시장치의 신호전극과 공통전극은 기판에 평행하게, 기판의 수평방향에 대하여 비스듬한 형상으로 형성되어 있다. 액정층에 인가되는 전계가 불균일하게 형성되도록 신호전극과 공통전극의 간격은 액정층의 간격보다 작게 형성되어 전극이 형성된 기판 근처의 액정분자는 전계의 영향으로 회전하지만, 전극이 형성되지 않은 기판 근처의 액정분자는 원래의 상태를 유지하여 액정층 전체에 걸쳐서 액정분자가 트위스트된다. 액정층의 보상값은 다음과 같은 식으로 표현되며,

Claims (14)

  1. 평행하게 배치된 제1기판 및 제2기판과, 상기한 제1기판 및 제2기판 사이에 형성된 액정층과, 상기한 제1기판 및 제2기판에 각각 형성된 배향층과, 상기한 액정층의 두께보다 작은 간격으로 제1기판에 서로 평행하게 형성된 적어도 한쌍의 전극과, 상기한 제1기판 및 제2기판에 부착된 편광판과 검광판으로 구성된 액정표시장치.
  2. 제1항에 있어서, 상기한 액정층의 배향방향이 기판에 대하여 수평방향 또는 수직방향인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
  3. 제1항에 있어서, 상기한 제1기판 및 제2기판 위에 성막된 배향층에 형성되는 배향방향이 서로 수직한 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
  4. 제1항에 있어서, 상기한 편광판과 검광판의 편광방향이 서로 수직한 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
  5. 제1항에 있어서, 상기한 편광판 및 검광판의 편광방향이 상기한 배향막의 배향방향과 평행한 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
  6. 제1항에 있어서, 상기한 한쌍의 전극이 기판의 수평방향에 대하여 θEL의 각도로 형성되는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
  7. 제6항에 있어서, 0°<θEL<90°인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
  8. 제7항에 있어서, θEL이 85°인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
  9. 제6항에 있어서, 90°<θEL<180°인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
  10. 제9항에 있어서, °EL이 95θ인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
  11. 제1항에 있어서, 상기한 액정층의 보상값()이(:액정의 굴절율이방성, d:액정층의 두께, λ:파장)인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
  12. 제11항에 있어서, 상기한 액정층의 보상값이 0.74λ인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
  13. 제1항에 있어서, 상기한 제1기판에 형성된 배향막이 제2기판에 형성된 배향막보다 작은 앵커링 에너지를 갖는 물질로 이루어진 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
  14. 제1항에 있어서, 상기한 제1기판에 형성된 배향막이 무기배향재료인 것을 특징으로 하는 액정표시장치.
