Abstract

본 발명은 키랄네마틱(chiral nematic)액정을 이용한 쌍안정성을 갖는 액정 전기 광학 소자, 특히 그 쌍안정성을 이용하여 스위칭을 행하고, 단순 매트릭스 구동이 가능한 액정 전기 광학 소자에 관한 것으로, 한쌍의 편광판간에 갖는 한쌍의 기판이 대향하는 각 내면에 전극, 배향막이 설치되고, 동시에 키랄네마틱 액정이 끼워지고, 키랄네마틱 액정은 각 배향막에 행해진 러빙 방향이 이루는 각ø에 대해서 전압을 인가하기 전의 초기 상태에서의 비틀림각이 약 ør로 되도록 나선 피치 Po가 조정되고, 상기 초기 상태에 있어서, 각 배향막과 접하고 있는 액정 분자의 다이렉터 벡터와 기판면이 이루는 각은 서로 역부호의 관계에 있고, 상기 초기 상태에 펄스 전압을 인가한 후의 완화 상태로서 액정의 비틀림각이 약ør+ 180°)와 약(ør-180°)인 2개의 준안정 상태를 갖고, 키랄네마틱 액정층의 두께 d와 외관상의n의 크기R(d-

Claims (21)

  1. 한쌍의 편광판간에 갖는 한쌍의 기판이 대향하는 각 내면에 전극, 배향막이 설치되고, 동시에 키랄네마틱 액정이 끼워지고, 키랄네마틱 액정은 각 배향막에 행해진 러빙 방항이 이루는 각 ψr에 대해서 전압을 인가하기 정의 초기 상태에서의 비틀림각이 약 ψr로 되도록 나선 피치 Po가 조정되고, 상기 초기 상태에 있어서, 각 배향막과 접하고 있는 액정 분자의 다이렉터 벡터와 기판면이 이루는 각은 서로 역부호의 관계에 있고, 상기 초기 상태에 펄스 전압을 인가한 후의 완화 상태로서 액정의 비틀림각이 약(ψr+180°)와 약(ψr+180°)인 2개의 준안정 상태를 갖고, 키랄네마틱 액정층의 두께 d와 외관상의n의 크기 R(d-n)및 ψr의 수칙에 따라서 각 편광판의 편광축과 한쪽의 러빙 방향과의 각 각도 P,A를 상기 준안정 상태간의 콘트라스트비가 2이상이 되도록 서로 설정하는 것을 특징으로 하는 액정 전기 광학 소자.
  2. 제1항에 있어서. 콘트라스트비는 반사형에 있어서 2이상인 액정 전기 광학 소자.
  3. 제1항에 있어서, 콘트라스트비는 투과형에 있어서 10이상인 액정 전피 광학 소자.
  4. 제1할에 있어서. ψr이 90°이상 270°이하인 액정 전기 광학 소자.
  5. 제1항에 있어서, ψr이 160°이상 200°이하인 액정 전기 광학 소자.
  6. 제1항에 있어서, ψr이 180°인 액정 전기 광학 소자.
  7. 제1항에 있어서, 나선 피지 Po와 액정층의 두께 d가 0.8ψr/360°인 액정 전기 광학 소자.
  8. 제5항에 있어서, 액정 배향막과 접하고 있는 액정 분자의 프리틸트각의 절대치가 1°이상 25°이하인 액정 전기 광학소자.
  9. 제5항에 있어서,각도 P,A및 R은 이하의 관계를 충족하는 액정 전기 광학 소자.
  10. 제1항에 있어서, 액정의 2개의 준안정 상태의 적어도 하나는, |L|·△n》λ단지, L은 2πd/(ψr+180°) 또는 2πd/(ψr-180°), λ의 빛의 파장의 조건을 충족하지 않고, 동시에 콘트라스트비가 10이상인 액정 전기 광학 소자.
  11. 제10항에 있어서, L·△n은 1.88㎛미만인 액정 전기 광학 소자.
  12. 제10항에 있어서, 2개의 준안정 상태 중 적어도 한쪽은 광학적으로 등방상인 액정 전기 광학 소자.
  13. 제10. 11 또는 12항에 있어서, ψr이 90"이상 270°이하인 액정 전기 광학 소자.
  14. 제10, 11 또는 제12항에 있어서, ψr이 160°이상 270°이하인 액정 전기 광학 소자.
  15. 제10,11 또는 12항에 있어서, ψr이 180°이상이며, 각도 P,A 및 R은 이하의 관계를 충족하는 액정 전기 광학 소자.
  16. 제1항에 있어서, 액정 전기 광학 소자의 각 전극을 제각기 주사 전극군과 신호 전극군에 형성하여 매트릭스 배치하고, 주사 전극군과 신호 전극군의 교차부에 의해서 화소부를 형성한 액정 표시 장치.
  17. 제16항에 있어서. 화소부의 임의의 일변과 각 러빙 방향이 이루는 각도률 저각기 17'이상 80'이하로 한 액정 표시 장치.
  18. 제 16항에 있어서, 적어도 한쪽의 러빙 방향은 화소부에 의해서 구성된 표시 판넬의 상하 방향에 대한 각ψa가 -45°ψa45°인 액정 표시 장치.
  19. 제16항에 있어서, 인접하는 화소간에서 구성되는 비화소부의 광투과율이 화소부에서의 광투과율 보다 낮은 액정 표시 장치.
  20. 제19항에 있어서, 비화소부 및 화소부 주변부에 차광성 물질의 층을 형성한 액정 표시 장치.
  21. 제19항에 있어서, 화소부에서의 액정충의 두께와 비화소부에서의 액정층의 두께를 다르게하고. 액정의 초기 상태률 다르게한 액정 전기 광학 소자.
