제1도는 본 발명의 제1실시예를 도시하는 전기 광학 소자로서 액정 표시 장치의 개략적인 구성의 단면도.
제2도는 그 액정 표시 장치에 있어서 편광판의 흡수축과 라빙 방향 등과의 관계를 도시하는 설명도.
제9도는 본 발명의 제2실시예를 도시하는 전기 광학소자로서 액정 표시장치의 개략적인 구성의 단면도.
제10도는 그 액정 표시 장치에 있어서 편광판의 흡수축과 라빙 방향 등의 관계를 도시하는 설명도.

Claims (5)

  1. 마주하여 설치된 한쌍의 전극 기판 사이에 비틀리게 마주하는 네마틱 액정을 끼워서 형성되는 액정셀과, 그 액정 셀을 끼고 그 양쪽에 설치된 한쌍의 편광판을 구비하고, 상기 네마틱 액정의 비틀림 각을 180도에서 360도의 범위로 한 전기 광학 소자에 있어서, 상기 네마틱 액정의 광학 이방성 Δn과 상기 네마틱 액정의 액정층 두께 d(㎛)과의 적Δn·d를 1.1㎛이상으로 하여, 더욱 상기한 한쌍의 전극 기판사이에 부가하는 전압을 3값 이상 선택할 수 있는 수단을 갖는 것을 특징으로 하는 전기 광학소자.
  2. 제1항에 있어서, 상기 한쌍의 전극 기판 사이에 부가하는 전압을 3값 이상 선택할 수 있는 수단은, 선택 전압과 비 선택전압 이외에 중간 전압을 부가할 수 있는 시분할 구동회로인 것을 특징으로 하는 전기 광학 소자.
  3. 제1항에 있어서, 상기 한쌍의 편광판의 흡수축(편광축)의 방향이 각각 인접하는 상기 전극 기판의 액정 분자 배향 방향에 대해서 15도에서 75도의 범위내에서 어긋나져 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 전기 광학 소자.
  4. 제1 또는 제2항에 있어서, 상기 한쌍의 편광판 사이에, 마주하여 배치된 한쌍의 전극 기판 사이에 네마틱 액정을 끼고서 형성되는 제2의 액정 셀을 개재시킨 것을 특징으로 하는 전기 광학 소자.
  5. 제4항에 있어서, 상기 제2의 액정 셀의 네마틱 액정의 액정분자가, 90도 Xn±40도(n은 0 또는 정수) 비틀려 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 전기 광학 소자.
