Description

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【産業上の利用分野】本発明は熱インクジェットペンの
構造に係り、さらに詳しくは、インクの貯蔵・分配性能
を改善した単一または多区画のペン本体に関するインク
ジェットプリントヘッドにインクを送るための方法に関
する。
【０００２】
【従来技術およびその問題点】熱インクジェットプリン
ト技術では、インクを熱インクジェットプリントヘッド
に供給するためのブラッダ(浮袋)型インク溜を備えたも
のが知られている。プリントヘッドは通常、その中に複
数のヒータ抵抗を有する薄膜抵抗(TFR)基板を有し、障
壁層・オリフィス部材が通常・薄膜抵抗基板の上にマウ
ントされている。この部材は通常、ヒータ抵抗の上方に
配置されたインク溜を有し、さらに、インクをプリント
媒体に排出する対応のドロップ発生器ノズルを形成す
る。
【０００３】プリントヘッド全体にインクを供給するブ
ラッド溜は、たとえば、熱インクジェットプリントヘッ
ドが取り付けられているハウジング内に配置されたゴム
シンブルの形をとる。この形式のインク溜・プリントヘ
ッド構造は、たとえば、Hewlett Packard Journal Volu
me 36 Number 5. May 1985に開示されている。
【０００４】これらのブラッダ型インク溜は一般的に
は、一定型式の熱インクジェット(TIJ)プリンタにとっ
て満足できるものではあるが、それにもかかわらず、他
の型式のプリンタに応用する場合には、比較的大きな空
間を占有するため十分な量のインクを保持できない場合
があるという問題点があった。
【０００５】
【発明の目的】したがって、本発明の一般的な目的は、
熱インクジェットプリンタに用いられる新規かつ改良さ
れたペン本体構造とインクを送る方法を提供することで
ある。この新規なペン本体構造はブラッダ型インク溜法
とは大きく異なっており、新規なプリントヘッド・イン
ク溜構造を有している。この構造においては、従来技術
のインク貯蔵インク送り機構に関連した上記問題は除去
ないしはかなり解消されることになった。
【０００６】
【発明の概要】この目的を達成するために、我々は一定
のインク貯蔵フォーム(発泡体)(多孔度が制御されたポ
リウレタンフォームが望ましい)を含む新規なペン本体
構造を発見・開発した。このフォームは、その材料内の
複数の小さな膜壁に孔を設けて網状とし、それによって
その内部のインクの移動度を増大させたものである。こ
のフォームはまた圧縮してその内部の孔の大きさを減少
させてフォーム厚を減少させるとともにその密度を増大
させる。このようにして、フォームの所望の毛管現象が
制御できる。
【０００７】この方法によって、フォームの毛管力が増
大され、それによって、このインク貯蔵媒体が薄膜抵抗
型の熱インクジェットプリントヘッドにインクを送るの
に特に適したものになる。すなわちインク連通する。ま
た、このインク送り装置はフォームを収容するのに最小
のスペース(体積)を用いて与えられ、フォーム内での対
応する最大のインク貯蔵能力を特徴としている。また、
このポリウレタンフォームは比較的安価に入手すること
ができ、ペン本体ハウジングの隔壁によって互いに分離
され、すなわち隔壁を介して互いに隣接した仕切り室に
挿入するのに特に適している。このハウジングは、本発
明の一実施例に対応する使い捨てのペン本体に藍色、マ
ゼンダ、黄色などの種々の色のインクを貯蔵するのに用
いることができる。
【０００８】このペン本体構造の種々の利点および新規
な特徴は添付図面の次の説明によって容易に明らかにな
るだろう。
【０００９】
【実施例】第１図には、３つに仕切られたペン本体１０
が示されている。このペン本体１０の内部には、点線で
分割された区域として図示された３個のインク貯蔵仕切
り室１２、１４および１６が設けられている。ペン本体
１０はさらにアウトプット・プリントヘッドを支持する
支持表面１８を備え、該支持表面１８には、直立した側
壁２０が隣接して、四角い容器形状(以下、矩形支持容
器)１９が形成されている。この構造はさらに、３個の
インク貯蔵仕切り室１２、１４および１６とそれぞれ連
通する３個のインク出力ポート２２、２４および２６を
有している。
【００１０】矩形支持容器１９は、複数個のインク射出
オリフィス群３０、３２、３４を有する薄膜抵抗型プリ
ントヘッド２８を受け入れるような形状になっている。
これらのインク射出オリフィス３０、３２および３４
は、円形状で、矩形支持容器１９の表面１８に延びるイ
ンク流路２２、２４および２６と連通する。
【００１１】第１図のアッセンブリでは、３つのインク
フィルタ３６、３８および４０がそれぞれ仕切り室１
２、１４および１６内にマウントされている。これらの
フィルタは通常、所望の多孔性をもったステンレスワイ
ヤメッシュからできており、ペン本体１０の３つの仕切
り室１２、１４および１６内に配置されたポリウレタン
フォーム(発泡体)の３つの部分４２、４４、４６からイ
ンクを送るときに空気泡および固体粒子を良好にろ過す
る。
【００１２】フォーム・ボディ部４２、４４、４６の裏
面４８には、５０で一般的に示されたプラグ５０が取り
付けられており、エンドカバー５１を有するプラグは、
背圧が生じるのを防ぎ、インクがフォームからフィルタ
３６、３８および４０を通ってプリントヘッドへ移動し
易くなるようにする。エアベント(通気孔)５２は有孔性
のプラスチック膜５４で被覆されており、プラスチック
膜５２は通気孔５２からインクが漏れるのを防ぐ。これ
ら３つの通気孔５２およびそれらの間の仕切壁６６、６
８の構造の詳細は、後述する第２図の拡大断面図で示さ
れている。
【００１３】前述したように、フォーム・ボディ部４
２、４４、４６のフォーム材料は、多孔度が制御された
エーテル系ポリウレタンフォームである。ポリウレタン
フォーム中の多数の膜壁は穴があき、網状となってい
る。これによって、フォームの毛管力が増大し、それに
よってフォームは、薄膜抵抗熱インクジェットプリント
ヘッドに至るインク供給路に沿ってインクを送るのに特
に適したものになる。プラグ５０はさらに、フォーム圧
縮タブ５６を有する。このタブ５６は図示のようにフォ
ーム部分４２、４４および４６に延入し、フォーム内の
毛管力を増大し、またプリントヘッドへのインク分配を
最適化するためにフォームに対して所望の量の圧縮力を
与える。
【００１４】実際に用いられているフォームは、Scott
Paper Company of Philadelphia Pennsylvaiaから発売
されているエーテル系フォーム材料で、１インチ(２．
５４cm)あたり６０〜７５孔の多孔度を有している。
【００１５】第２図の断面図は、第１図の線２−２に沿
うもので、両図において同じ要素は同じ参照番号で示さ
れている。ペン本体１０は内壁６２および６４を有し、
それらは、第１図に示されたフォームの直方形部４２、
４４および４６を受容する３つの仕切り室を部分的に画
定する。これらの内壁６２、６４は、前述したエンド
（端）プラグ５０エンドカバー（端部材）５１の対応す
る丁字状の内側延設部６６、６８を受止める。このプラ
グ５０はさらに、図示のように空所（溝）部７６、７８
および８０と連絡する通気孔７０、７２および７４を有
する。プラグ５０のエンドカバー５１のこれらの溝部
（空所）７６、７８および８０には、フォームの３つの
仕切り室内に適当な通気を与える複数の多孔性膜８２、
８４、５４を取り付ける。この膜は、ポリテトラフルオ
ロエチレン（ＰＴＦＥ）からなり、十分な網密度を有
し、インクが３つの通気孔７０、７２、７４を通して逆
流するのを防ぐ。
【００１６】複数のインク室８８、９０、９２は、ペン
本体１０の第２図中の下の部分で、３つのインクパイプ
９４、９６、９８に、それぞれ図示にように形成されて
いる。各インクパイプ９４、９６、９８はそれぞれ、前
述したワイヤメッシュフィルタ４０、３８、３６をそれ
ぞれ備えている。これらのフィルタは、インクパイプ８
８、９０、９２を通って最終的には薄膜抵抗プリントヘ
ッド２８に至るインクから空気泡や個体粒子をろ過す
る。このインク流路はまたペン本体１０の図中下向きの
表面１００と薄膜抵抗プリントヘッド基板２８の半導体
サブストレート部材１０２の対向面との横方向インク路
も含んでいる。
【００１７】インクパイプ９４、９６、９８は、壁６
２、６４、６６と組み合わせて、フォームの下に図示さ
れる空隙を形成している。この形状により、３個のフィ
ルタの上に図示される部分のフォームの圧縮が増大す
る。これにより、インクパイプとフィルタの近傍部分に
おける毛管現象が増大し、フォームを図中縦に上から下
へと通って、３つのインクパイプ９４、９６、９８に入
るインク路を空気泡が妨害してしまう可能性を減少させ
る。
【００１８】サブストレート部材１０２は、接着障壁１
０６によってノズル板１０４に接着される。この障壁１
０６は、E.I.Dupon Company of Wilmington、 Delaware
から発売されているRISTON又はVACRELという商標名のポ
リマー材料を選択することができる。インクはインクパ
イプ８８、９０、９２を通って図中縦に上から下に流
れ、サブストレート部材１０２内の３つの垂直路１０
８、１１０、１１２は、ノズル板１０４内にあり、第１
図に示すような円形パターンに配置された複数グループ
のオリフィス３０、３２、３４にインクを送る。
【００１９】ノズル板１０４は、ニッケルで電気鋳造さ
れ、金めっきされ、さらに、例えば本願出願人に係る、
特願昭６２−１１２２２１「インクジェットプリントヘ
ッドの製造方法」において開示されているヒートステー
キング法を用いてポリマー障壁材料に貼られる。ノズル
板１０４は、上述したHewlett Packard Journal、Vol.3
8、 No.5 May 1985に記載された方法で製造できる。
【００２０】薄膜抵抗構造２８は、適当な接着剤１１４
によってペン本体１０の図中の最下面１００に固定され
ている。接着剤１１４は、第２図に示すように、内側に
へこんだ壁面１１６、１１８とともに、サブストレート
１０２の外周に塗布される。
【００２１】本発明は、熱インクジェットへの対応に限
定されるものではなく、上記のようなフォームによるイ
ンク貯蔵の性能が要求され且つ適用可能な他の型のイン
クジェットにおいても用いることができる。
【００２２】また、本発明によるペン本体は、白黒やカ
ラーのプリンタおよび種々のラスタ、ベクトルモードで
動作するプロッタの製造においても有用である。なお、
本明細書中で「ペン」とは、「プリントヘッドとインク
を貯蔵する手段を一体としたもの」を包含する概念であ
る。したがって、一般的には「プリントヘッドカートリ
ッジ」或いは、単に「プリントヘッド」と呼称すること
もある。
【００２３】
【効果】本発明は、上記のように構成され、作用するも
のであるから、インク貯蔵のため発泡体を用いているの
で、容積当たりのインク貯蔵量を増大させることができ
るという効果が得られる。また、隔壁を介して互いに隣
接させて発泡体を配置させることができるので、複数の
色インクを極めて小さい容積に収容することができると
いう効果が得られる。したがって本発明は、使い捨て型
のプリントヘッドカートリッジ、特にカラープリンタ用
カートリッジに使用して効果極めて大である。

Claims (2)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 以下の(イ)〜(ハ)のステップから成るイ
    ンクジェットプリントヘッドにインクを送るための方
    法。 (イ)制御された毛管力を備えた網状のポリウレタンフォ
    ームにインクを貯蔵するステップ、ここに該ポリウレタ
    ンフォームはインクパイプとメッシュフィルタにより圧
    縮されて圧縮が増大し毛管現象が増大した部分を有す
    る。 (ロ)前記ポリウレタンフォームと前記インクジェットプ
    リントヘッドとを連通させるステップ。 (ハ)前記ポリウレタンフォームから前記毛管現象が増大
    した部分と、前記メッシュフィルタと、インクパイプ
    と、前記インクジェットプリントヘッドのオリフィスと
    を通してインクを送り、インクが前記制御された毛管力
    によって前記ポリウレタンフォームから前記インクジェ
    ットプリントヘッドへインクが連通するステップ。
  2. 【請求項２】以下の(イ)〜(ニ)のステップから成るイン
    クジェットプリントヘッドにインクを送るための方法。 (イ)制御された毛管力を有する網状ポリウレタンフォー
    ムと、フィルタを備えたインクパイプとを有するハウジ
    ングを備えるステップ、ここに前記インクパイプと前記
    フィルタとは前記ハウジングから伸長して前記ポリウレ
    タンフォームを圧縮し、前記ハウジングと前記ポリウレ
    タンフォーム間に間隙を持たせて前記インクパイプと前
    記フィルタ近傍に毛管現象の増大した部分を生じる。 (ロ)前記ポリウレタンフォームにインクを貯蔵するステ
    ップ。 (ハ)前記ポリウレタンフォームと前記インクジェットプ
    リントヘッドをインク連通させるステップ。 (ニ)前記ポリウレタンフォームから前記毛管現象が増大
    した部分と、前記フィルタとインクパイプ、前記インク
    ジェットプリントヘッドのオリフィスを通してインクを
    通じ、前記制御された毛管力によって前記ポリウレタン
    フォームから前記プリントヘッドへインクが連通するス
    テップ。
