種々の金属塩は、当該ナノ粒子の核生成、結晶化、成長および凝集に影響する。用語"塩"は、本発明の範囲内では、無機(例えば、ZrCl4)または有機陰イオン種(例えば、酢酸セリウムまたはチタンアルコキシド)に結合した金属陽イオンを含む化合物として、広く定義される。一般的には、塩は水に可溶であるが、いくつかの塩は低または高pHでのみ可溶である。本発明において、前記陰イオン種は、塩基と反応し、水和陰イオン種又は部分的に溶媒和した陰イオン種のいずれかを形成すると、解離し、金属陽イオンは、金属水酸化物を形成する。本発明において利用可能な4つの可能な一般的な金属系からの金属塩の例は、これらに限定されないが、(a)アルミニウム:酢酸アルミニウム、アルミニウムアセチルアセトナート、硫酸アンモニウムアルミニウム十二水和物、臭化アルミニウム、アルミニウムtert−ブトキシド、アルミニウムsec−ブトキシド、アルミニウムペントキシド、アルミニウムヘキソキシド、塩化アルミニウム、塩化アルミニウムTHF錯体、アルミニウムエトキシド、ヨウ化アルミニウム、アルミニウムイソプロポキシド、L−乳酸アルミニウム、メタリン酸アルミニウム、硝酸アルミニウム、過塩素酸アルミニウム、アルミニウムフェノキシド、リン酸アルミニウム、アルミニウムフタロシアニンクロリド、硫酸アルミニウム、アルミニウムトリブトキシド、アルミニウム−tri−sec−ブトキシド、トリス(2,2,6,6−テトラメチル−3,5−ヘプタンジオネート)アルミニウム、(b)チタン:チタン(iv)ビス(アンモニウムラクタト)ジヒドロキシド溶液、チタン(iv)ビス(エチルアセトアセテート)ジイソプロポキシド、臭化チタン(iv)、チタン(iv)ブトキシド、チタン(iv)tert−ブトキシド、チタン(iv)ヘキソキシド、塩化チタン(iii)、塩化チタン(iv)、塩化チタン(iii)テトラヒドロフラン錯体、チタンジイソプロポキシドビス(アセチルアセトナート)、チタン(iv)ジイソプロポキシドビス(2,2,6,6−テトラメチル−3,5−ヘプタンジオナート)、チタン(iv)エトキシド、チタン(iv)2−エチル−1,3−ヘキサンジオレート、ヨウ化チタン(iv)、チタン(iv)イソプロポキシド、チタン(iv)オキシスルファート、チタン(iv)フタロシアニンジクロリド、チタン(iv)プロポキシド、硫酸チタン(iii)、チタン(iv)(トリエタノールアミノエート)イソプロポキシド、(c)ジルコニウム:酢酸ジルコニウム、ジルコニウム(iv)アセテートヒドロキシド、ジルコニウム(iv)アセチルアセトナート、ジルコニウム(iv)ビス(クエン酸ジエチル)ジプロポキシド、ジルコニウム(iv)tert−ブトキシド、ジルコニウム(iv)ヘキソキシド、ジルコニウム(iv)ブトキシド溶液、塩化ジルコニウム(iv)、塩化ジルコニウム(iv)テトラヒドロフラン、ジルコニウム(iv)ジイソプロポキシドビス(2,2,6,6−テトラメチル−3,5−ヘプタンジオナート)、ジルコニウム(iv)エトキシド、リン酸水素ジルコニウム(iv)、ヨウ化ジルコニウム(iv)、ジルコニウム(iv)イソプロポキシドイソプロパノール錯体、ジルコニウム(iv)プロポキシド、硫酸ジルコニウム(iv)水和物、ジルコニウムテトラビス(2,2,6,6−テトラメチル−3,5−ヘプタンジオネート)および(d)セリウム:酢酸セリウム(iii)水和物、セリウム(iii)アセチルアセトネート水和物、臭化セリウム(iii)、炭酸セリウム(iii)水和物、塩化セリウム(iii)、セリウム(iii)2−エチルヘキサノアート、ヨウ化セリウム(iii)、硝酸セリウム(iii)六水和物、シュウ酸セリウム(iii)水和物、過塩素酸セリウム(iii)溶液、硫酸セリウム(iii)、硫酸セリウム(iii)水和物および硫酸セリウム(iv)を含む。本発明のさらなる態様は、均一な固溶体を形成する2つ以上の金属酸化物組成物の混合物であるドープされたまたは混合された金属酸化物ナノ粒子、混合結晶質金属酸化物材料、または酸化物相のうちの1つが結晶の表面に分離するものを使用することによる触媒支持材料の熱安定性および水熱安定性を改善する方法である。これらの組成物は、参照される方法の第1工程において2種以上の金属塩を混合して、約350℃以上で焼成された混合金属前駆物質を形成することによって製造される。La、Ba、Si、Zr、Al、およびTiのような少量(例えば、1〜10%)の他の酸化物を含むドーピングアルミナ、アナターゼ−チタニアまたはルチル−チタニアは、非ドープ金属酸化物と比較して優れた熱性および水熱性能特性を有する生成物をもたらすことは当業者において既知である。微結晶を本質的にドープする本発明の方法は、支持体および吸着剤として使用される安定化された金属酸化物への新規で容易な経路を提供する。
