Una composición de recubrimiento transparente que comprende una dispersión acuosa de nanopartículas, en donde las nanopartículas que tienen al menos una de las tres dimensiones de menos de aproximadamente 250 nm (D90) están sustancialmente dispersadas y tienen un tamaño de partículas medio D50 de menos de 1 micrómetro, en donde las nanopartículas son carbonato de calcio molido.

En contraste con los resultados de US 5.171.631 que se lograron con ATH, el carbonato de calcio natural molido utilizado en la presente invención no solo mantiene más completamente el brillo y la opacidad de la formulación para pintura cuando se utiliza para reemplazar parte del TiO2 de la formulación a una PVC constante, sino que incluso puede dar lugar a una mejora del brillo y/o la opacidad.
Se determinó la CPVC de acuerdo con el método de medición proporcionado en la sección de ejemplos a continuación.
Se midió el diámetro medio (d50 (Mal)) y d98 (Mal) de acuerdo con el método de medición provisto en la sección de ejemplos a continuación.
Se midió el brillo de una composición para recubrimiento aplicada a un sustrato de acuerdo con el método de medición proporcionado en la sección de ejemplos a continuación.
Se midió la opacidad de una composición para recubrimiento aplicada a un sustrato de acuerdo con el método de medición proporcionado en la sección de ejemplos a continuación.
Con el fin de describir en mayor detalle la formulación de composiciones para recubrimiento opacificantes y que aportan brillo, se proporcionan a continuación los siguientes ejemplos.
Las composiciones para recubrimiento de acuerdo con la presente invención (es decir, cuando se utilizan para la formación de recubrimientos transparentes) se pueden aplicar a una variedad de sustratos según se discutió anteriormente, incluyendo, pero sin limitarse a, hormigón, madera, papel, metal y cartón.
En una realización preferida, la composición para recubrimiento se aplica a un sustrato en una cantidad tal que se forme una capa con un espesor que esté entre 100 y 400 µm.
Las composiciones para recubrimiento de la presente además pueden incluir uno o más de lo siguiente: abrillantador óptico, resina (tal como un látex o un aglutinante de acrilato, preferentemente en forma de emulsión acuosa), desespumante, espesante, disolvente, éteres de glicol y dispersante. Preferentemente, la composición para recubrimiento tiene una viscosidad de Brookfield desde 200 a 500 mPa.s, según se mide con el método de medición provisto en los ejemplos a continuación.
Ejemplos de composiciones para recubrimientos opacificantes/que aportan brillo
Contenido de sólidos en suspensión o dispersión (% equivalente al peso en seco)
El peso del material sólido en una suspensión o dispersión se determina pesando el material sólido obtenido por la evaporación de la fase acuosa de la suspensión y secando el material obtenido a un peso constante.
Distribución del tamaño de las partículas (% en masa de las partículas con un diámetro < X) y diámetro medio de las partículas (d50 (Sedi), d50 (Mal) y d98 (Mal)) del material particulado
Se determina el diámetro medio en peso de las partículas (d50 (Sedi)) y la distribución de masa del diámetro de las partículas de un material particulado mediante el método de sedimentación, es decir, un análisis del comportamiento de la sedimentación en un campo gravimétrico. La medición se realiza con un SedigraphTM 5100.
El método y el instrumento son conocidos por el experto en la técnica y se utilizan comúnmente para determinar el tamaño de partículas de materiales de carga y pigmentos. La medición se lleva a cabo en una solución acuosa de 0,1 % en peso de Na4P2O7. Las muestras se dispersaron utilizando un agitador a alta velocidad y un medio ultrasónico.
Se evaluó el diámetro medio en peso de las partículas (d50 (Mal)) utilizando un Malvern Mastersizer 2000 (Frauenhofer). El valor de d98 (Mal), medido utilizando un Malvern Mastersizer 2000 (Frauenhofer), indica un valor del diámetro tal que el 98 % en peso de las partículas tiene un diámetro menor que este valor.
Área de superficie específica de BET (m2/g)
Se determinaron los valores del área de superficie específica de BET utilizando nitrógeno y el método BET conforme con ISO 9277.

Las pinturas formuladas se aplicaron a una tarjeta de contraste en las cantidades necesarias con el fin de medir tanto el brillo como la opacidad.

- Los resultados establecidos en la Tabla 5 anterior demuestran que reemplazar una parte del TiO2 con SMGCC de acuerdo con la invención, y con valores del d98/d50 que oscilan desde 2,4 a 5, da lugar a recubrimientos con esencialmente la misma opacidad (relación de contraste) que la formulación de comparación que tiene una PVC igual pero solo TiO2. Se observa que los valores de brillo son equivalentes o mejores con respecto a la formulación de comparación que tiene una PVC igual pero solo TiO2.
