VERFAHREN ZUM UMSETZEN VON EPOXIDEN MIT CARBONSÄUREN ODER IHREN ANHYDRIDEN UND EPOXYHARZZUSAMMENSETZUNG

Diese Erfindung betrifft eine Zusammensetzung, die ein Epoxyharz und einen latenten Katalysator zur Förderung der
Umsetzung zwischen vicinalen Epoxiden und Carbonsäuren oder Anhydriden solcher Carbonsäuren enthält, und ein Verfahren zum Umsetzen
einer Epoxyverbindung mit einer Carbonsäure oder einem
Carbonsäureanhydrid. Solche Umsetzungen sind von erheblicher kommerzieller Bedeutung, da man durch sie funktionelle Monomere,
z.B. Hydroxyäthylacrylat, und vernetzte Epoxyharze erhalten kann.
Die Umsetzung zwischen Epoxiden und Phenolen und /oder Carbonsäuren oder ihren Anhydriden ist eingehend bearbeitet

und in zahlreichen Patentschriften und wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichungen beschrieben worden. Beispielhaft sei auf
die US-PSS 2 216 099, 2 633 458, 2 658 885, 3 377 406, 3 477 990, 3 547 881, 3 547 885, 3 694 407 und 3 738 862,
CA-PS 893 191 und die DT-PS 2 206 218 sowie auf das Buch "Handbook of Epoxy Resins" von H. Lee und K. Neville, McGraw
Hill, N.Y., USA (1967) hingewiesen.
In diesen Druckschriften sind nicht nur die Klassen der Ausgangsstoffe beschrieben, sondern es wird dort auch darauf
hingewiesen, daß ein Katalysator erforderlich ist, um eine befriedigende Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit zu erreichen. Ausserdem
ist es in der Fachwelt wegen der Unterschiede in den Reaktionsprodukten anerkannt, daß die Reaktion zwischen Epoxiden und
Phenolen einerseits und den Epoxiden und Carbonsäuren oder ihren Anhydriden andererseits nicht gleichzusetzen ist. Der
Unterschied zwischen den1beiden Reaktionstypen wird dadurch
verdeutlicht, daß durch Umsetzung von Epoxyharzen mit polyfunktionellen
Phenolen in Gegenwart eines Katalysators im wesentlichen lineare Polymere entstehen (vgl. US-PS 3 477 990), wogegen
durch Umsetzung der gleichen Epoxyharze mit einer PoIycarbonsäure oder einem Anhydrid einer Polycarbonsäure in Gegenwart
des gleichen Katalysators vernetzte Polymere gebildet werden (vgl: US-PS 3 547 885). Es wird deshalb angenommen, daß
die reaktionsfähige Verbindung, die die Umsetzung katalysiert, in beiden Fällen verschieden ist. Es würden also Verbindungen,
die die eine Reaktion katalysieren, nicht notwendigerweise die andere Umsetzung auch fördern.

Die Verwendung der bekannten Katalysatoren ist auf diesem Gebiet mit verschiedenen Problemen verbunden. In manchen Fällen
reagieren die Katalysatoren mit den Epoxidausgangsstoffen und
verhindern deshalb den Verkauf eines Verschnittes, der ein Epoxyharz und einen Katalysator enthält. Ein derartiger Verschnitt
wird in der Regel als "vorkatalysiertes Epoxyharz" bezeichnet. In anderen Fällen treten Probleme durch die ungenügende:
Selektivität der bekannten Katalysatoren auf, da diese Katalysatoren gleichzeitig die Umsetzung zwischen dem
Epoxidausgangsstoff und der Säure- oder Säureanhydridgruppe
des Ausgangsstoffs und der bzw. den aliphatischen Hydroxylgruppe(n) des Reaktionsprodukts fördern.
Dadurch entstehen verzweigte oder vernetzte Polymere anstelle der gewünschten linearen Polymeren. In anderen bekannten Fällen
ist die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit nicht befriedigend und /oder das Reaktionsprodukt ist stark gefärbt und kommt infolgedessen
für viele Anwendungen nicht in Betracht. Ein anderer Nachteil kann darin bestehen, daß das Reaktionsprodukt mit korrodierenden
Anionen, z.B. Chlorid, kontaminiert ist und für bestimmte Anwendungsgebiete, wie z.B. elektrische Einbettungsmassen, deshalb
nicht in Betracht kommt.
Es wurde nun gefunden, daß Triphenyl(2,5-D!hydroxyphenyl)-phosphoniumhydroxid-inneres
-Salz ein latenter Katalysator für die Förderung der Umsetzung zwischen vicinalen Epoxiden und
Carbonsäuren oder ihren Anhydriden ist·

Die Katalysatoren sind überraschend wirksam, indem sie die
gewünschte Reaktion zwischen den Ausgangsstoffen bei einer befriedigenden Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit selektiv katalysieren.
Man erhält die gewünschten Reaktionsprodukte in hohen Ausbeuten und mit einer im allgemeinen ausgezeichneten Farbe.
Ausserdem sind die neuen Katalysatoren mit Epoxyharzen bei den üblichen Lagerungstemperaturen überraschend reaktionsträge.
Man kann deshalb vorkatalysierte Epoxyharze, bzw. Zusammensetzungen aus Epoxyharzen und den neuen Katalysatoren in einfacher
Weise dadurch herstellen, daß man die Epoxyharze mit diesen Katalysatoren verschneidet. Derartige Verschnitte von
Epoxyharzen mit den neuen Katalysatoren stellen selbstverstand-
Gegenstand der vorliegenden Erfindung ist deshalb ein Verfahren zum Umsetzen von Epoxyverbindungen bei dem man (a) eine
Verbindung mit einer vicinalen Epoxygruppe mit (b) einer Carbonsäure, einem Carbonsäureanhydrid oder einer Mischung davon in
Gegenwart eines Katalysators umsetzt, der ein Triphenyl(2,5-Dihydroxyphenyl)phosphoniumhydroxid-inneres
Salz entsprechend der Formel

Die Erfindung stellt ferner eine Zusammensetzung zur Verfügung, die ein Epoxyharz mit im Mittel mehr als einer Epoxygruppe
im Molekül, Triphenyl(2,5-Dihydroxyphenyl)phosphoniumhydroxid-inneres
Salz und eine Carbonsäure, ein Carbonsäureanhydrid oder eine Mischung davon enthält. Ferner können die Zusammensetzungen
auch übliche Zusatzstoffe enthalten.
Das innere Salz kann durch Umsetzen von 1,4-Benzochinon
mit einem Triphenylphosphin in einem inerten Lösungsmittel, z.B. Benzol, und Abfiltrieren des Reaktionsprodukts erhalten
werden.
Das Phosphonium-innere Salz ist besonders geeignet für das
Katalysieren der Umsetzung zwischen vicinalen Epoxiden und Carbonsäuren. Bei dieser Verwendung kann die Menge des Phosphoniumsalzes
innerhalb eines weiten Bereiches schwanken. Im allgemeinen wird es aber in einer kleinen aber katalytischen
Menge angewandt, wie z.B. in Mengen von etwa 0,001 bis etwa 10 Gew. %, bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht der Ausgangsstoffe.
Bevorzugt wird der Katalysator in Mengen von etwa 0,05 bis etwa 5 Gew. % verwendet.
Wie bereits festgestellt wurde, handelt es sich bei den Ausgangsstoffen der Reaktionen, die durch die neuen Katalysatoren
gefördert werden, um gut bekannte Verbindungen.
So sind z.B. die vicinalen Epoxide organische Verbindungen, die eine oder mehrere

tragen. Wahrscheinlich sind die Alkylenoxide mit 2 bis etwa
24 Kohlenstoffatomen, die Epihalogenhydrine und die Epoxyharze

die bekanntesten Verbindungen dieser Art. Die bevorzugten Monoepoxide
sind Äthylenoxid, 1,2-Propylenoxid, 1,2-Butylenoxid und
Epichlorhydrin. Bei den Epoxyharzen gibt es zwei bevorzugte
Untergruppen. Die erste Untergruppe entspricht der allgemeinen Formel
O-CH.

in der R Wasserstoff oder ein Alkylrest ist und η eine Zahl von etwa 0,1 bis etwa 10, bevorzugt etwa 1 bis etwa 2 ist.
Die Herstellung dieser Polyepoxide ist in den US-PSS 2 216 und 2 658 885 offenbart.
Die zweite Untergruppe entspricht der allgemeinen Formel

in der R, R^1 R2 und R3 unabhängig voneinander Wasserstoff,
Brom und Chlor sind und A ein Alkylenrest, z.B. ein Methylenrest, oder ein Alkylidenrest, z.B. ein Isoprqpylidenrest mit
etwa 1 bis etwa 4 Kohlenetoffatomen, -S-, -S-S-, -SO-, -SO -,
-CO- oder -0- ist.

Die organischen Carbonsäuren und ihre Anhydride gehören selbstverständlich auch zu den gut bekannten Verbindungen.
Die Säuren tragen eine oder mehrere Carboxylgruppen an einem organischen Rest. Die Anhydride erhält man aus derartigen
Säuren durch Entfernung von Wasser in einer intra- oder intermolekularen Kondensationsreaktion. Von dieser Klasse von Verbindungen
sind beispielsweise von Interesse Essigsäure, Propionsäure, Octansäure, Stearinsäure, Acrylsäure, Methacrylsäure,
Ölsäure, Benzoesäure, Phthalsäure, Isophthalsäure, Maleinsäure, Bernsteinsäure, Adipinsäure, Itaconsäure, Polyacrylsäure
und Polymethacrylsäure sowie Anhydride von solchen Säuren, wie Essigsäureanhydrid, Phthalsäureanhydrid und Hexahydrophthalsäureanhydrid

Für die Umsetzung mit Epoxyharzen sind zwei Untergruppen
der Carbonsäuren und ihrer Anhydride von besonderer Bedeutung.
Durch die Umsetzung von äthylenisch-ungesättigten Monocarbonsäuren
mit Epoxyharzen entstehen hydroxysubstituierte Ester oder Polyester, die für die.Herstellung von Überzugsmassen,
Klebstoffen ui^d dergleichen besonders geeignet sind (vgl. z.B.
US-PS 3 377 4Q6). Auf diesem Gebiet sind Acrylsäure und Methacrylsäure besonders geeignet, so daß die äthylenisch-ungesättigten Monocarbonsäuren eine bevorzugte Untergruppe der
Säuren darstellen.

Die zweite bevorzugte Untergruppe der Säuren schließt solche Säuren ein, die als Vernetzungsmittel für Epoxyharze
geeignet sind. Die Mitglieder dieser Untergruppe sind normalerweise zwei- oder dreibasische Säuren oder deren Anhydride,
wobei es sich bevorzugt um flüssige Verbindungen oder niedrig schmelzende Feststoffe handelt. Beispiele dafür
sind Bernsteinsäure, Maleinsäure oder Hexahydrophthalsäure und. ihre Anhydride. Andere derartige Säuren und Anhydride
sind z.B. in den ÜS-PSS 2 970 983 und 3 547 885 beschrieben.
Das Verhältnis von vicinalem Epoxidausgangsstoff zu der
als Ausgangsstoff verwendeten Carbonsäure oder Carbonsäureanhydrid kann in Abhängigkeit von dem gewünschten Produkt
innerhalb weiter Grenzen schwanken.
Die Ausgangsstoffe sind in zahlreichen Fällen flüssig, so daß kein Lösungsmittel oder Verdünnungsmittel benötigt wird.
Es gibt jedoch Fälle, bei denen ein oder beide Ausgangsstoffe fest oder viskose Flüssigkeiten sind, so daß ein inertes Lösungsmitteloder
Verdünnungsmittel mit Vorteil mitverwendet werden kann. Geeignete derartige Lösungsmittel oder Verdünnungs«
mittel sind dem Fachmann bekannt, so daß nur einige Verbindungsgruppen und Verbindungen als Beispiele angeführt werden,
wie Ketone (Aceton oder Methyläthylketon) und Kohlenwasserstoffe (Benzol, Toluol, Xyxlol, Cyclohexan xxnd Ligroin).

Für die Umsetzung wird die Reaktionsmischung im allgemeinen auf Temperaturen im Bereich von etwa 50 bis etwa
225 C, bevorzugt 100 bis 175 C erwärmt, bis eine exotherme Reaktion auftritt. Nachdem die exotherme Umsetzung abgeklungen
ist, wird die Reaktionsmischung im wesentlichen auf eine Temperatur in dem bereits angegebenen Bereich zusätzlich
erwärmt, um sicherzugehen, daß die Umsetzung vollständig
ist. Üblicherweise wird bei atmosphärischem oder erhöhtem Druck, z.B. bei Drücken bis zu 14 kg/cm abs. gearbeitet.
Man erhält durch die Umsetzung Produkte, die grundsätzlich in der Technik bekannt sind. Das speziell hergestellte Produkt
schwankt in seinen Eigenschaften in Abhängigkeit von der Auswahl und dem Verhältnis der Ausgangsstoffe.
Die durch Umsetzung von einem Epoxyharz mit einer Monocarbonsäure oder einem Anhydrid einer solchen Säure hergestellten
Produkte haben endständige Estergruppen und eignen sich als Überzugsmassen, Klebstoffe, verstärkte Kunststoffe und Formmassen.
Die durch Umsetzung von Epoxyharzen mit Polycarbonsäuren oder ihren Anhydriden erhaltenen Reaktionsprodukte sind
vernetzte unlösliche Harze, die für Überzüge geeignet sind.
Funktionelle Monomere erhält man, indem man ein C9 ,-Alkylenoxid
mit Acrylsäure oder Methacrylsäure umsetzt. Ein Beispiel eines derartigen funktioneilen Monomeren ist Hydroxyäthylacrylat.

Andere geeignete Produkte kann man in ähnlicher Weise durch Umsetzung von anderen vicinalen Epoxiden mit anderen
Carbonsäuren oder Anhydriden mit den genannten Katalysatoren erhalten.
Die Erfindung wird in den folgenden Beispielen noch näher erläutert.
Ein Diglycidyläther von Bisphenol A mit einem Epoxidäquivalenzgewicht
von 172 - 178 (100,0 g) und Hexahydrophthalsäureanhydrid
(80,0 g) und Triphenyl(2,5-Dihydroxyphenyl)-phosphoniumhydroxid-inneres
Salz als Katalysator (0,15 g) wurden sorgfältig gemischt und unter einem Vakuum gehalten,
bis die Blasenbildung im Vakuum sehr gering war. Die Reaktionsmischung wurde dann zwei Stunden auf 1100C erwärmtJ die
Wärmezufuhr wurde abgestellt und die exotherme Reaktion wurde abklingen gelassen. Die Reaktionsmischung wurde dann für
weitere 2 Stunden auf 150 C erwärmt und anschließend abgekühlt. Das gehärtete Produkt war klar, farblos und sehr hart.
Es haftete stark an den Wänden des Reaktionsgefäßes. Das gehärtete Produkt ist deshalb als Schutzüberzug geeignet.
Ein aliquoter Teil dieser Mischung wurde vor der Härtung 2 Wochen bei Raumtemperatur gehalten, wobei keine nennenswerte
Änderung der Viskosität der ungehärteten Mischung beobachtet wurde.

Ähnliche Ergebnisse wurden bei einer Versuchsreihe beobachtet, bei der anstelle von Hexahydrophthalsäureanhydrid Dodecenylbernsteinsäureanhydrid
und "Nadicmethylanhydrid" verwendet wurden. Es wurden jedoch längere Härtungszeiten benötigt.
Es sind noch weitere Abwandlungen dieser Versuche möglich.
So kann man z.B. die angeführten Anhydride durch andere Anhydride, wie Maleinsäureanhydrid, ersetzen, wobei man vernetzte
Produkte erhält. Alternativ können Acrylsäure oder
V-
Methacrylsäure für die Umsetzung mit Epoxyharzen verwendet werden, wobei man vinylgruppenhaltige Epoxyharze erhält, die
durch freie Radikale bildende Katalysatoren oder thermisch polymerisiert werden können. Auch solche Verbindungen sind
als Überzugsmaterialien geeignet.

Claims (16)
- Patentansprücheι. \, Verfahren zum Umsetzen von Epoxy verb indungen, d adurch gekennzeichnet, daß man (a) eine Verbindung mit einer vicinalen Epoxygruppe mit (b) einer Carbonsäure, einem Carbonsäureanhydrid oder einer Mischung davon in Gegenwart eines Katalysators" umsetzt, der ein Triphenyl(2,5-Dihydroxyphenyl)-phosphoniumhydroxid-inneres Salz der Formelist.
- 2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Katalysator in einer Menge von 0,001 bis 10 Gew. %, bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht der Ausgangsstoffe, verwendet wird.
- 3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Katalysator in einer Menge von 0,05 bis 5 Gew. %> bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht der Ausgangsstoffe, verwendet wird.
- 4. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Umsetzung bei einer Temperatur im Bereich von 50 bis 2250C durchgeführt wird.509882/0897
- 5. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennnzeichnet, daß die Umsetzung bei einer Temperatur im Bereich von 100 bis 175°C durchgeführt wird.
- 6. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Ausgangsstoff (a) ein Epoxyharz mit im Mittel mehr als einer vicinalen Epoxygruppe pro Molekül ist.
- 7· Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Ausgangsstoff (a) der Diglycidylather von Bisphenol A ist.
- 8. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß der Ausgangsstoff (b) Hexahydrophthalsäureanhydrid ist.
- 9. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 7, dadurch gekenn"zeichnet, daß der Ausgangsstoff (b) Acrylsäure oder Methacrylsäure ist.509882/0897

Epoxyharzzusammensetzung, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß sie (a) ein Epoxyharz init im Mittel mehr als einer vicinalen Epoxygruppe pro Molekül, (b) eine Carbonsäure, ein Carbonsäureanhydrid oder eine Mischung davon und (c) ein Triphenyl(2,5-Dihydroxyphenyl)phosphoniumhydroxidinneres Salz entsprechend der Formelenthält.
- 11. Zusammensetzung nach Anspruch 10, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das Epoxyharz der Diglycidylather yon Bisphenol A ist.
- 12. Zusammensetzung nach Anspruch 10 oder 11, dadurch gekennze ichnet, daß die Komponente (b) Hexahydrophtha1säureanhydrid ist.
- 13. Zusammensetzung nach Anspruch 10 oder 11, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Komponente (b) Acrylsäure oder Methacrylsäure ist.509882/0897
- 14. Zusammensetzung nach einem der Ansprüche 10 bis 13, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das innere Salz in einer Menge von 0,001 bis 10 Gew. %, bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht des Epoxyharzes und der Carbonsäure, des Carbonsäureanhydrides oder einer Mischung davon, vorhanden ist.
- 15. Zusammensetzung nach einem der Ansprüche 10 bis 13, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das innere Salz in einer Menge von 0,05 bis 5 Gew. %, bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht des Epoxyharzes und der Carbonsäure, des Carbonsäureanhydrids oder einer Mischung davon,vorhanden ist.
- 16. Epoxyharzzusammensetzung, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß sie aus einem Epoxyharz mit im Mittel mehr als einer vicinalen Epoxygruppe pro Molekül und Triphenyl-(2,5-Dihydroxyphenyl)phosphonium.salz entsprechend der Formelbesteht.509882/0897
