Process for production of a metal-containing azo dye. It has been found that a valuable, new, metal-containing azo dye is obtained by using a monoazo dye of the formula
EMI0001.0006
an alkali which splits off the acyl group and an atom donating agent can act on one another in such a way that a chromium-containing azo dye is formed which contains two monoazofa dye molecules bound to a chromium atom in a complex.
The new chromium-containing dye forms a black powder that dissolves in water with blue and in concentrated sulfuric acid with violet color and wool from weakly alkaline, neutral or acetic acid baths in full green-gray tones of good light, wet, decatur and carboni - goodness and excellent evening color.
The treatment with the chromium-releasing agents is carried out according to the present method in such a way that a chromium-containing azo dye is formed which contains less than one atom of chromium in a complex bond per molecule of 1-iono azo dye. It is generally advisable to use less than one, but at least half an atom of chromium for the metallization of a molecule of dye and to carry out the metallization in an alkaline medium. Accordingly, those chromium compounds that are stable in alkaline Shem agents are particularly well suited for the implementation of the process, such as.
B. complex chromium compounds of aliphatic or aromatic o-oxycarboxylic acids. As examples of aliphatic Oxyca.r- bonsäuren u. a.
Lactic acid, glycolic acid, citric acid and especially tartaric acid are mentioned, while of the aromatic o-oxycarboxylic acids, for example, those of the benzene series, such as 4-, 5- or 6-methyl-1-oxybenzene-2-carboxylic acid and above especially the unsubstituted 1-oxybenzene-2-carboxylic acid should be mentioned. The treatment with the chrome-releasing agents ge happens with advantage in the heat, open or under pressure, z. B. at the boiling point of the reaction mixture, optionally in the presence of suitable additives, for.
B. in the presence of salts of organic acids, bases, organic solvents or white direct agents promoting complex formation.
The inventive cleavage of the acyl group by means of alkalis can be carried out before or after, but preferably during, the metallization. As allkallen are of course those which can split off the acyl group from an acylamino group, such as. B.
Ammonia and especially potassium and sodium hydroxide. The amount of alkali must be chosen so that there is an excess of alkali in the reaction mixture, that is, more alkali must be present than is necessary to saturate all of the acidic, salt-forming groups present in the reaction mixture.
It is expedient to ensure that the reaction mixture contains an alkali excess of at least 0.5 and preferably 4 to 6 1lolecules (based on the starting monoazo dye of the above formula). The alkali treatment can for example at 100 C or at even higher tempera tures, z. B. tion mixture at the boiling point of the reac, for a long time, z. B. 1 to 12, preferably 6 hours.
Example: 20.2 parts of 2-amino-1-oxybenzene-4-sulfonic acid methylamide are slurried in 200 parts of water and 15 parts by volume of 10N hydrochloric acid and at 5 to 10 with 25 parts by volume 4N sodium nitrite solution diazotized. The diazo compound neutralized by the addition of sodium carbonate is allowed to run into a solution of 20, which has been cooled to 0 with ice.
5 parts of 1-acetylamino-7-oxynaphthalene in 52 parts by volume of 2N sodium hydroxide solution and 50 parts by volume of 2N sodium carbonate solution. After the coupling has ended, the deposited dye is filtered and washed with dilute sodium chloride solution.
41.4 parts of the dye from diazotized 2-amino-1-oxybenzene-4-sulfonic acid emethylamide and 1-acetylaniino-7-oxy-naphthalene are suspended in 1200 parts of water.
After adding 24 parts of sodium hydroxide and 120 parts of a solution of chromium salicylic acid sodium with a chromium content of 2.6%, the mixture is heated to the boil and refluxed for about 6 hours.
The dye is completely separated from the clear, green-blue solution by adding sodium chloride and neutralizing with dilute acetic acid, separated and dried.
If one honors as above, but without the addition of sodium hydroxide, that means. without splitting off the ether group, a dye is obtained which dyes wool in rather reddish gray tones.
