Process for the preparation of an azo dye. It has been found that a valuable, metal-containing azo dye is obtained by using the monoazo dye of the formula \
EMI0001.0009
lets cobalt donor act in such a way that a cobalt-containing azo dye is formed which contains two monoazo dye molecules bound to a cobalt atom in a complex.
The new metal-containing dye is a water-soluble, dark powder that dyes wool from weakly alkaline, neutral or weakly acetic acid baths in yellow shades of good lightfastness and washfastness.
The monoazo dye used as the starting material in the present process can be prepared by methods known per se, by adding diazotized 3-amino-4-oxv-1 diphenylsulfone. with 1 - Acetoa.cetyl aminobenzene-3-sulfonic acid amide in an alkaline medium.
When carrying out the process, it is generally advisable to use an amount of a cobalt-releasing agent containing less than one, but at least half an atom of cobalt, and / or to carry out the metallization in a weakly acidic to alkaline medium.
For example, complex cobalt compounds of aliphatic o-oxycarboxylic acids which contain the cobalt in complex bonds are particularly suitable as cobalt-releasing agents for carrying out the process. As examples of aliphatic oxycarboxylic acids, u. a. Lactic acid, glycolic acid, citric acid and especially tartaric acid can be mentioned. A fold cobalt compounds, e.g. B.
Salts of divalent cobalt, such as cobalt sulfate or cobalt acetate and optionally cobalt hydroxide, can also be used as cobalt-releasing agents.
The conversion of the dye into the complex cobalt compound takes place with advantage in the heat, openly or under pressure, e.g. B. at 75-85, if necessary in the presence of suitable additives, z. B. in the presence of salts of organic acids, bases, organic solvents or other agents promoting complex formation. Example .: 256 parts of 1-chloro-2-nitrobenzene-4-sulfonic acid chloride are dissolved in 500 parts of dry benzene and 140 parts of aluminum chloride are gradually added at 40, during which hydrogen chloride is evolved. It is held at 40-50 for 3 to 4 hours, the dark liquid is poured onto ice and the benzene is driven over with steam. After cooling, the residue is filtered and washed with water.
The still moist 1-chloro-2-nitrobenzene-4-phenylsulfone thus obtained, which, when recrystallized from alcohol, has a melting point of 125-126, is then heated to the boil in 500 parts of 10% sodium hydroxide solution for 3 hours until practically clear solution has arisen. This is acidified with hydrochloric acid, the precipitated 4-oxy-3-nitro-1,1'-diphenyl sulfone is filtered off and washed with water.
From alcohol it crystallizes in yellow crystals with a melting point of 132-134. Finally, the product is reduced by the usual method with sodium sulfide (or catalytically with hydrogen in the presence of nickel).
24.9 parts of the 3-amino-4-oxy-1,1'-diphenylsulfone thus obtained are diazotized in a conventional manner in a hydrochloric acid solution with sodium nitrite. The diazo compound neutralized with sodium carbonate is combined with a solution prepared from 25.6 parts of 1-acetoacetylaminobenzene-3-sulfonic acid amide, 100 parts of water, 4 parts of sodium hydroxide and 5 parts of sodium carbonate. After the coupling has ended, the separated dye is filtered off,
washed with dilute sodium chloride solution and dried.
To convert the dye obtained in this way into the complex cobalt compound, 5.16 parts of the dye are heated to 80 with 150 parts of water and 5 parts by volume of 2N sodium hydroxide solution and mixed with 11 parts of a cobalt sulfate solution with a cobalt content of 2.9511 / o shifted. After about half an hour of heating to 80-90, the complex formation is complete. By neutralizing with dilute acetic acid, the cobalt complex formed in the dye is completely deposited.
