Additional patent to main patent No. 304040 Process for the production of an azo dye It has been found that a valuable, metal-containing Azofarb@st.off ge n is obtained if one refers to the monoazo dye of the formula
EMI0001.0005
lets cobalt-releasing agent act in such a way that a cobalt-containing azo dye is formed which contains two -. # ionoazo dye molecules bound to a cobalt atom in a complex.
The new metal-containing dye is a water-soluble powder that dyes wool from slightly alkaline, neutral or slightly acidic bath in yellow tones of pus, light and wash fastness.
The monoazo dye used in the present process as an alternative can be prepared by methods known per se by coupling diazotized 3-amino-4-oxv-1,1'-diphenylsulfone with isopropyl acetoacetamide in an alkaline medium.
When carrying out the process, it is generally advisable to use an amount of a cobalt-releasing agent containing less than one, but at least half an atom of cobalt, and / or to carry out the metallization in a weakly acidic to alkaline medium.
For example, complex cobalt compounds of aliphatic o-oxycarboxylic acids which contain cobalt in complex bonds are particularly well suited as cobalt-releasing agents for carrying out the process. As examples of aliphatic oxycarboxylic acids, u. a. Lactic acid, glycolic acid, citric acid and especially tartaric acid can be mentioned. Simple cobalt compounds, e.g. B.
Salts of divalent cobalt, such as cobalt sulfate or cobalt acetate and optionally cobalt hydroxide, can also be used as cobalt-releasing agents.
The conversion of the dye into the complex cobalt compound takes place. with advantage in the heat, open or under pressure, z. B. at 75 to 85, optionally in the presence of suitable additives, z. B. in the presence of salts of organic acids, bases, organic solvents or other agents promoting complex formation.
Example 256 parts of 1-chloro-2-nitrobenzene-4-sulfonic acid chloride are dissolved in 500 parts of dry benzene and 140 parts of aluminum chloride are gradually added at 40, with the evolution of hydrogen chloride. The mixture is held at 40 to 50 for 3 to 4 hours, the dark liquid is poured onto ice and the benzene is driven over with steam. The residue is filtered after cooling. and washed with water.
The still moist 1-chloro-2-nitrobenzene-4-phenylsulfone thus obtained, which, when recrystallized from alcohol, has a melting point of 125 to 126, is then heated to boiling in 500 parts of 10 0 / o strength sodium hydroxide solution for 3 hours until one a practically clear solution has emerged. This is acidified with hydrochloric acid, the precipitated 4-oxy-3-nitro-1,1'-diphenyl, sulfone is filtered off and washed with water.
From alcohol it crystallizes in yellow crystals with a melting point of 132 to 134. At the end of the process, the product is reduced by the usual method with sodium sulfide (or catalytically with hydrogen in the presence of nickel).
24.9 parts of the 3-amino-4-oxy-1,1'-diphenyl'sWfons thus obtained are in the usual manner in hydrochloric acid solution. Sodium nitrite diano ted.
The diazo compound neutralized with sodium carbonate is combined with a solution prepared from 14.3 parts of isopropyl acetoacetic acid, 100 parts of water, 4 parts of sodium hydroxide and 5 parts of sodium carbonate. After the coupling has ended, the deposited dye is filtered off, washed with dilute sodium chloride solution and dried.
To convert the paraffin thus obtained into the complex cobalt compound, 4.03 parts of the dye are heated to 80 with 150 parts of water and 5 parts by volume of 2N sodium hydroxide solution. and with 11 parts of a cobalt sulfate solution with a cobalt content of. 2.951 / o offset. After about half an hour of heating to 80 to 90, the complex formation is complete.
By neutralizing with dilute acetic acid, the cobalt complex formed in the dye is completely deposited.
