Patented Oct. 4, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. MARTENS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO REDWAY & BURTON, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A HEATING-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 17,759, dated October 4, 1887.
Application filed August 11, IP87. Serial No. 246,741. Term of patent 3:; years.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN F. MARTnNs, of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented and produced a new Design for the Ornamentation of Heating- Stoves, which is fully set forth and described in the following specification and accompanying illustration, forming part thereof.
The base is a plate having downwardlycurved edges and rounded corners. The corner sections of the curved edges of the base are ornamented with a series of overlapping semicircular figures, a. The front section of this edge carries the register and name-plate combined in one piece. name-plate the section is ornamented with a few tendrils, a, incised in the surface.
The legs B, which are placed at the corners, are vertical throughout their upper two-thirds, or thereabout, and then curve rapidly outward to form the foot. The upper part of the leg bears a lions head, b, front view in high relief, and at each side of the lions head, at the edge of the leg, a straight vertical bar, b, with curled ends.
The firepot section C is ornamented with several rows of over-lapping scallops 0, pointing downward. Each scallop terminates in smaller secondary scallops. Each series of scallops overlaps the series below it. The foot-rail D bears on its upper surface the scroll-work d d.
The middle section, E, is provided with the flaring ring E at its junction with the fire-pot section. The ring E is decorated with a series of separate figures, E, raised above the surface and representing highly-conventionalized leaves. The plain skirting E finishes the ring E The section E bears two rectangular doors, E and E The door E has a raised beading, e, around its edge, and within this beading the background 6 is roughened, as by stippling. The upper part of the door bears a lions head, 6, front view in high relief. On each side of this lions head is scroll-work 6 The door E has raised beading 6* around its edge, like the beading around the door E. Within the beading the door is open to receive mica panels, and this opening is partly covered by the scroll-work e arranged about the vertical bar e".
At the sides of the The outer portion of the top is ornamented with separate scroll figures f, similar to each other. Above this zone the top is decorated with a series of concentric rounded rings, G, arranged one above the other.
The dome H has its edge decorated with parallel vertical lines h, and its top with the vine h. The whole is surmounted by the urn I.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a design for a stove, the ornamentation of the fircdoor E, consisting of the beading 0, background 0, lions head 6 and scrollwork 0, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a design for a stove, the ornamentation of the upper door, E consisting of the beading c, scroll-work e, and bar e substantially as shown and described.
3. In a design for a stove, the ornamentation of the fire-pot section with series of overlapping scallops o, each having secondary scallops, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a design for a stove, the configuration of the base and ornamentation thereof with overlapping figures a and tendrils a, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a design for a stove, the configuration of the leg and the ornamentation thereof with the lions head I) and bars b, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a design for a stove, the ornamentation of the top with the scrolls f, rings G, lines h, vine, h, and urn I, substantially as shown and described.
7. In a design for a stove, the ornamentation of the top with scrollsf, rings G, vine h, and urn I, of the upper door with scroll-work e and bar a, of the fire-door with background 6, lions head 6 and scrollwork e of the fire'pot section with the series of overlapping scalloped figures o, of the base with overlapping figures a and tendrils a, and of the feet with the lions head I), all substantially as shown and described.
