Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. KEEP AND CHARLES WIPFLER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, AS SIGNORS T0 THE MICHIGAN STOVE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A HEATING-STOVE.
QIPECIPICATION forming part of Design No. 18,700, dated October 23, 1888.
Application filed April I, 1888. Serial No. 269,626. Term of paicni 7 yearsv To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. KEEP and CHARLES WIPFLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Design for Heating- Stovcs, of which the following is a spccification, reference being had therein to the ac companying photograph.
This design is more particular] y designed for heating-stoves.
The leading features of this design reside, in addition to the ornamentation of the stove as an entirety, in the peculiar shape and ornamentation of the segregablc parts thereof, as shown in the accompanying photograph.
Referring to the said photograph, A designates the leg-base, ornamented with scroliwork, as sh own, said scroll-work being formed on each side of the leg-base as follows: A large scroll,a,the center of which simulates a spread leaf, is at each end, the outer oouvolute of said scroll extending from the bottom of the said scroll a upward and toward the center of the base, passing through the convolntes of a smaller scroll, b, forming a part of the main scroll, the terminals of the scrolls at the center of the base extending upwardly and from each other and terminating each in a leaf, 0. Following the upwardly-extending outer convolutes of the scroll a, and filling the space between said convolute and the outer convolute of the scroll b,are the flame-shaped ornaments d. The corners of the base above the upper ends of the legs are ornamented by the curved heads a.
The legs B have serrated edges simulating the edges of growing leaves, and at the toe are ornamented by branched leaves, from the center of which springs the upwardly-extending flame-shaped ornament f.
The ash-pit section 0 is substantially rectangular in shape, provided at the sides with the foot-rail g, ornamented at its ends by the resettes, as shown, and by circumferential alternating plain and ribbed portions h. The curved bands i, embracing said foot-rail, are ornamented by similar transverse plain and ribbed portions. The ends of the bands simulate a three-leafed clover.
The aslrpit door D is of ogee shape in vertical cross-section, ornamented in front by ornamental letters and scrolls, beneath this by the flutesj, and at the end by the scroll k, which spreads outward at the upper end, giving the appearance of the etals of a flower.
The cylinder E is formed of the upper and lower side plates, E F, respectively, and the upper and lower front plates, G H, respectively.
The cylinder E, near its vertical center, is apparently divided into two parts by the ornamental band 1, rounded as shown, the upper portion being ribbed vertically and the lower half plain.
The side plate or panel, F, of the lower portion of the cylinder is ornamented at thelowcr end by the outwardly-inclined portion m,fluted vertically, and at the sides by vertically-ribbed columns. This side plateis further ornamented by the central scroll, it, the central convolnte of which is divided by transverse linesto give the appearance of knobs. Appearing to rest upon one of the branches of a convolute of this scroll is the foot of the figure F,provided with a wing, o, and from his mouth issues a volume of flame and smoke, which curls around and fills the upper portion of the panel. Beneath the scroll it, and appearing to form a sort of support therefor, is finer scroll-work.
The upper side plate or panel, E, has at each corner a small scroll inclosing a rosette, the outerconvolutes of the small scrolls approaching each other and forming a further ornamentation, as shown.
Nestling within the center of a large scroll inclosed between the small corner scrolls is the nondescript animal p,simulati ng in appearance part fish and part bird.
The front lower plate or panel, H, of the cylinder is ornamented by the nondescript ani mal q, the feet or claws of which test within the convolutes of a scroll, anLfrom his mouth issues the flame r, while his tail has the appearance of inversely-extended scrolls, one of 5 which terminates in the flame-shaped ornament 8. Between the wing of the animal and the flame which issues from his month are the scrolls t.
Beneath the front lower plate or panel, H,
is the door I, the lower corners of which are curved and the upper corners sharp.
The upper door, J, is ornamented by irregularly-arranged bars. In the center is the circular plain ring, within which is theband a, formed with radially-arranged ribs, as shown.
At the top of the upper front plate or panel, G, above the door-opening therein, are the rosettes 1), between which isa fanciful ornament.
Above and below the cylinder are the bands K L, respectively, each being ornamented by scroll-work, as shown.
Above the band K is a plain rectangular molding, M, above which is the cover N, having at its lower edge the rectangular plain molding O, and consisting, above said molding, of the curved open scroll-work portion 10, surmounted by an urn, P, of fanciful design.
What we claim as new is- 1. Adesign fora heatingstove, comprising the legs, the leg-base, the ash-pit section, the cylinder, and the top, all having the shape and ornamentation shown.
2. In a design for a heating-stove, the leg having its edges serrated and the center provided with the flameshaped ornamentf, as shown.
3. In a design for a heating-stove, the legbase ornamented at the corners by curved beads and scroll-work on the sides, and the flame-shaped ornaments d beneath the end scrolls, as shown.
4. In a design for a heating stove, the ash pit section ornamented by the foot-rail, and the bands ornamented by transverse ribbed portions, as shown.
5. In a design for a heatingstove, the ashpit door ornamented at the end by a scroll spreading out at its upper end and simulating the petals of a flower, as shown.
6. In a design foraheating-stove, the lower cylinder side plate having the ornamentation shown, consisting of the nondescript figure upon a large central scroll.
7. In a design for aheating-stove, thelower cylinder front plate having the ornamentation shown, consisting ofa nondescript animal on a large central scroll, and with the representa tion of flame issuing from his mouth.
8. In a design foraheatingstove, the upper cylinder side plate having the ornamentation shown, consisting of a nondeseript animal on alarge central scroll and simulating in appear anee part fish and part bird.
9. In a design for a heating-stove, the firedoor J, ornamented by the irregularly-arranged bars, and near its center by the plain band with the incloscd ribbed band, as shown, and straight bars extending from the plain band to the irregular bars.
10. In a design fora heating-stove, the body having the eylinderplatesshown, ornamented by the upper transversely ribbed oonvexlycurved diVidingband, the lower reversclycurved band, and a plain edge between the two bands, as shown.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses, this 2d day of April, 1888.
