Abstract

(57)【要約】 【目的】 対称的で、繰り返し性のある飛行性能を備え
たゴルフボールを提供するものである。 【構成】 ゴルフボールのディンプル配列のレイアウト
方法は、六十個の等しい三角面を有する測地線状に拡張
した二十面体を構成することから成る。六十個の各三角
面は、ほぼ同一のディンプル配列を備えている。測地線
二十面体は、ゴルフボールの直径を有する球体に外接す
る二十面体を組み立てることにより形成される。二十面
体状三角形の各辺を二等分することにより、二十面体の
二十個の各二十面体状三角形に、一点が決定される。測
地線焦点は、前記一点を球面上に投影することにより決
定される。各測地線焦点は、二十面体状三角形の各頂点
と接続され、各測地線焦点は、二十面体状三角形により
形成される底面と測地線焦点において併合する三個の三
角面とを有する直正四面体を形成する。

Description

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【産業上の利用分野】この発明はゴルフボールのディン
プル配列に関するもので、特に、測地線状に拡張した二
十面体に構成されたゴルフボールのディンプル配列に関
するものである。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】対称的であり、繰り返し性のある飛行性
能を備えたゴルフボールを提供するため、ディンプル配
列は、例えば八面体、十二面体あるいは二十面体等の多
面体の球面投影法を用いて開発されて来た。ディンプル
は、各多面体の中にあるディンプル配列が全く同一かあ
るいはほぼ同一になるように配置される。多面体の面数
すなわち辺数が多いほど、繰り返し性の水準が高いこと
を表している。二十面体、すなわち二十個の三角面を備
えた多面体は、最も一般に使用される多面体で、二十個
の球面三角形から構成された繰り返し構成要素を有する
ディンプル配列を備えたゴルフボールを提供する。
【０００３】米国特許４５６０１６８号は、二十面体状
ディンプル配列を記載する。ディンプルは、二十面体状
球面三角形の中に配置されるため、ディンプルは、各球
面三角形の各辺の中間点を通過する六個の大円に交差し
ない。鋳型の型割線は、一つの大円と合わせることがで
き、他の大円は、ディンプル配列の対称性を増す擬似型
割線を提供する。
【０００４】米国特許４１４２２２７号は、各ディンプ
ルと交差しない十個の大円を含む十二面体状ディンプル
配列を記載する。しかしながら、ゴルフボールの表面
は、十二〜三十個の長方形にはげた区域、すなわちディ
ンプルの存在しない領域を含む。
【０００５】米国ゴルフ協会（United States Golf Ass
ociation）は、米国ゴルフ協会対称性試験にしたがい、
ゴルフボールを試験する。ゴルフボールは、一つの軸回
りに回転するように自動スイング機により打たれ、次
に、最初の軸と垂直な軸回りに回転するように打たれ
る。二つの試打の違いは、もしボールが対称であれば、
所定範囲を越えるはずはない。もし正確な繰り返し構成
要素の数が増やせれば、ディンプル配列は、対称性と飛
行特性の繰り返し性を改良することができる。
【発明が解決しようとする課題】
【０００６】英国特許３７７３５４号は、二十面体状デ
ィンプル配列を記載する。図５において、各二十面体状
球面三角形は、六個の直角球面三角形に分割される。図
５は、型割線を備えておらず、ディンプル配列は、型割
線において対称的になるであろう。
【０００７】米国特許４９１５３８９号もまた、各二十
面体状三角形が六個の直角三角形に分割されるような二
十面体状ディンプル配列を例示する。ディンプル配列
は、いかなる型割線も備えておらず、ディンプルは、総
ての大円に配置される。球面は、心なし研削盤により形
成され、ディンプルは、球面に造られる。
【０００８】米国特許４１９２０７８号もまた、各二十
面体状三角形が六個の直角三角形に分割されるような二
十面体状ディンプル配列を例示する。鋳型の型割線に交
差すディンプルは取り除かれ、型割線と交差しない半円
かあるいは他の空力的に等価なディンプルと置き換えら
れる。ディンプル配列は、空力的な対称性を達成する
が、幾何学的な対称性は達成しない。
【０００９】米国特許５２４９８０４号は、二十面体状
三角形が六個の直角三角形に分割されるような他の二十
面体状ディンプル配列を記載する。型割線は、ほぼ鋸歯
状であり、ゴルフボールの赤道をあちこちへ横切って通
過する。

【課題を解決するための手段】高い水準の繰り返し性
は、球状二十面体に備えられた繰り返し構成要素を提供
する測地線状に拡張した二十面体を使用することにより
達成することができることを発見した。二十面体は、ゴ
ルフボールの直径を有する球体に外接する正二十面体を
形成することにより、測地線上に拡張される。球体は、
二十面体の各頂点と交差する。二十面体状三角形の各辺
の二等分線の交点により形成される各二十面体状三角面
の一点は、測地線焦点を得るために球面上に投影され
る。測地線焦点を使用して、直正四面体は、測地線焦点
と二十面体状三角形の各頂点の間の線分を接続すること
により各二十面体状三角形上に構成される。各正四面体
の底面は、二十面体状三角形により形成され、正四面体
の他の三個の三角面は、測地線焦点において併合する。
二十個の正四面体の三個の三角面は、六十個の繰り返し
球面三角形を提供し、標準の二十面体状配列より三倍の
繰り返し性がある。ディンプルは、六十個の各球面三角
形が完全に同一かあるいはほぼ同一のディンプル配列を
有するように配置される。

【実施例】この発明を添付図面に図示した実施例と共に
説明する。図１及び２は、二十面体状球面三角形を形成
するために、球面上に正二十面体状三角形の一つを投影
する従来技術へのアプローチを例示する。図１は、三個
の辺３１と三個の頂点３２を有する平坦な二十面体状三
角形３０の平面図である。図２は、平坦な二十面体状三
角形の側面図である。二十面体に外接する球面３３は、
三個の頂点３２と交差する。球面上への平坦な二十面体
状三角形の投影は、球面三角形を形成する。
【００１２】図３及び４は、測地線二十面体の形成方法
を例示する。平坦な二十面体状三角形３５は、三個の辺
３６と三個の頂点３７を有する。各辺は、各辺に直角な
線３８により二等分される。各二等分線は、一点３９に
おいて交差する。図４は、測地線焦点４１を決定するた
めに、二十面体に外接する球面４０上への一点３９の投
影を例示する。
【００１３】図５及び６は、直正四面体を組み立てるた
めの測地線焦点４１の使用方法を例示する。三本の線分
４２は、測地線焦点４１において併合する三個の三角面
４３を形成するために、各頂点３７を測地線焦点４１に
接続する。正四面体の底面は、平坦な二十面体状三角形
３５の面である。
【００１４】図７は、二十個の平坦な二十面体状三角面
４６を有する正二十面体を例示する。図８は、各二十面
体状三角面４６の上部に載置された三個の三角面４８を
有する測地線二十面体を例示する。各三角面４８は、正
確な繰り返し構成要素であり、測地線二十面体に六十個
ある。
【００１５】図９は、３９２個のディンプルを有する対
称なディンプル配列をレイアウトするための測地線二十
面体の使い方を例示する。測地線二十面体の各四面体
は、三個の三角面５０を備えている。各三角面は、底辺
５１と測地線焦点において交差する一対の斜辺５２を備
えている。黒丸ディンプル５３は斜辺５２と交差し、白
丸ディンプル５４は底辺５１と交差する。斜線ディンプ
ル５５は、底辺と斜辺のどちらとも交差しない。各三角
面５０は、三個の完全なディンプルと、六個の二分の一
ディンプルと、測地線焦点において一個の三分の一ディ
ンプルと、底辺と各斜辺の交点において二個の十分の一
ディンプルとを備えている。六十個の三角面のディンプ
ルの総数は、３９２個である。三角面５０のディンプル
は、球面にディンプルの位置付けをするために、測地線
二十面体に外接する球面に投影される。
【００１６】もし希望するなら、各ディンプルは、ディ
ンプルと交差しない六個の大円を提供する米国特許４５
６０１６８号にしたがって配列することができる。大円
の一つは、鋳型の型割線として使用することができる。
三本の底辺５１は、二十面体状三角形の一つを形成し、
二十面体状三角形の各辺の中間点を結合する線分５６
は、それらが球面に投影された時に大円の線分を形成す
る。球体に総計六個の大円がある。ディンプルは、大円
の線分に交差しないように配列することができる。もし
希望するなら、実際の鋳型の型割線を形成しない大円と
の僅かな交差は許すことができる。
【００１７】図１０は、４５２個のディンプルを有する
ディンプル配列を例示する。各三角面５０は、三個の完
全なディンプルと、八個の二分の一ディンプルと、一個
の三分の一ディンプルと、二個の十分の一ディンプルを
備えている。
【００１８】図１１は、４９２個のディンプルを有する
ディンプル配列を例示する。各三角面５０は、三個の完
全なディンプルと、十個の二分の一ディンプルと、二個
の十分の一ディンプルを備えている。
【００１９】図１２は、５００個のディンプルを有する
ディンプル配列を例示する。各三角面５０は、三個の完
全なディンプルと、十個の二分の一ディンプルと、一個
の三分の一ディンプルを備えている。
【００２０】図１３は、５１２個のディンプルを有する
ディンプル配列を例示する。各三角面５０は、三個の完
全なディンプルと、十個の二分の一ディンプルと、一個
の三分の一ディンプルと、二個の十分の一ディンプルを
備えている。
【００２１】図１４は、３２０個のディンプルを備えた
ゴルフボールの球面を例示する。実線は、二十面体状球
面三角形の各辺の中間点を通過する六個の大円を表す。
大円は、十二個の五角形５９と二十個の小三角形６０を
形成し、時々三十二面体として引き合いに出される。各
五角形の中心は、五個の二十面体状三角形が出会う極す
なわち頂点になっている。点線６１は、一つの正四面体
の各底辺であり、点線６２は、正四面体の三個の三角面
の各斜辺を形成する。三個の三角面の夫々は、一個の完
全なディンプルと、八個の二分の一ディンプルと一個の
三分の一ディンプルを備えている。

ゴルフボール６４を例示する。点線６１及び６２により
形成された各三角面は、三個の完全なディンプルと、八
個の二分の一ディンプルと、二個の十分の一ディンプル
を備えている。
【００２５】図１９〜２１は、ゴルフボール６４の図で
ある。
【００２６】図２２は、５００個のディンプルを有する
ゴルフボール６５を例示する。ディンプル配列は、図１
２に例示した配列と同一である。
【００２７】図２３〜２５は、ゴルフボール６５の図で
ある。
【００２８】他のディンプル配列として、より多くのあ
るいはより少ない数のディンプルを備えたものを設計す
ることができる。一般に、ボールの表面の約６５〜８６
％はディンプルで覆われ、各ディンプルは、重ならない
ようにほぼ均一の間隔に保たれる。異なる大きさのディ
ンプルは、最適の飛行性能を達成することができ、ディ
ンプルの断面は、球形か、トランケッド・コーン形状
（円錐形の先端を切り落としたような形状）か、六角形
か、他の形状かあるいはそれらの任意の組み合わせにす
ることができる。ディンプルの弦すなわち直径は、一般
に、約０．１９０〜０．５０８センチ（０．０７５〜
０．２００インチ）の範囲にある。
【００２９】前述の明細書におけるこの発明の特定の具
体例の詳述は、例示の目的のために記載されたもので、
この発明の精神と範囲から逸脱しないで、当業者により
ここに与えられた色々な細部を適宜変更できることが理
解されるであろう。

Claims (8)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 ａ）二十面体の各頂点が球体に交差する
    ようなゴルフボールの直径を有する球体に外接する二十
    個の二十面体状三角形を有する二十面体を構成し、 ｂ）二十面体状三角形の各辺を二等分する線を交差させ
    た、二十面体状三角形の一点を決定し、 ｃ）二十面体状三角形用の測地線焦点を決定するため
    に、球体上に前記一点を投影させ、 ｄ）測地線焦点を二十面体状三角形の各頂点に線分によ
    り接続し、この線分と二十面体状三角形の各辺とが、二
    十面体状三角形により形成される底面と測地線焦点にお
    いて併合する三個の三角面とを有する直正四面体を形成
    するようにし、 ｅ）前記三角面を六十個有する測地線状に拡張した二十
    面体を形成するために、各二十面体状三角形のためにｂ
    工程〜ｄ工程を繰り返し、 ｆ）上記六十個の三角面の夫々にほぼ同一のディンプル
    配列をレイアウトし、 ｇ）前記六十個の三角面のディンプル配列を球体上に投
    影する工程から成るゴルフボールのディンプル配列のレ
    イアウト方法。
  2. 【請求項２】 各二十面体状三角形の各辺の中間点を接
    続線により接続し、各接続線が球体上に大円の線分を形
    成するように球体上へ接続線を投影し、ディンプルが一
    つも大円の線分とほぼ交差しないようにディンプルを配
    列する工程をさらに備えた請求項１に記載したゴルフボ
    ールのディンプル配列のレイアウト方法。
  3. 【請求項３】 上記六十個の三角面の夫々が、一個の完
    全なディンプルと、八個の二分の一ディンプルと、一個
    の三分の一ディンプルとを備えている請求項１に記載し
    たゴルフボールのディンプル配列のレイアウト方法。
  4. 【請求項４】 上記六十個の三角面の夫々が、三個の完
    全なディンプルと、六個の二分の一ディンプルと、一個
    の三分の一ディンプルと、二個の十分の一ディンプルと
    を備えている請求項１に記載したゴルフボールのディン
    プル配列のレイアウト方法。
  5. 【請求項５】 上記六十個の三角面の夫々が、三個の完
    全なディンプルと、八個の二分の一ディンプルと、二個
    の十分の一ディンプルとを備えている請求項１に記載し
    たゴルフボールのディンプル配列のレイアウト方法。
  6. 【請求項６】 上記六十個の三角面の夫々が、三個の完
    全なディンプルと、八個の二分の一ディンプルと、一個
    の三分の一ディンプルと、二個の十分の一ディンプルと
    を備えている請求項１に記載したゴルフボールのディン
    プル配列のレイアウト方法。
  7. 【請求項７】 上記六十個の三角面の夫々が、三個の完
    全なディンプルと、十個の二分の一ディンプルと、一個
    の三分の一ディンプルとを備えている請求項１に記載し
    たゴルフボールのディンプル配列のレイアウト方法。
  8. 【請求項８】 上記六十個の三角面の夫々が、三個の完
    全なディンプルと、十個の二分の一ディンプルと、一個
