R9およびR10は、炭素数18まで、好ましくは8までのアルキル、アルケニル、アルコキシ、アルカノイルオキシまたはアルコキシカルボニルオキシであるが、これらの基の一つは、CN、NC、NO2、NCS、CF3、OCF3、F、ClまたはBrを表してもよい。
本発明に従って使用できる液晶混合物は、それ自体公知の方法で合成される。一般に、より少ない量で使用される成分が、主要な組成を構成する成分中で、好ましくは加温されて溶解される。さらに、例えばアセトン、クロロホルムまたはメタノール等の有機溶媒の液晶成分溶液を混合して、完全に混合した後、例えば蒸留によって溶媒を再度除去することも可能である。
組成物は、複数の化合物、好ましくは3〜30、より好ましくは6〜20、および最も好ましくは10〜16の化合物からなる。これらの化合物は、慣用的な方法で混合される。一般に、より少ない量で使用される化合物の所定量を、より大きい量として用いられる化合物に溶解する。温度がより高い濃度で用いられる化合物の透明点を越える場合には、溶解の課程の完了を観察するのは、特に容易である。しかしながら、他の慣用の方法、たとえば、いわゆるプレ混合物の使用や、いわゆるマルチ・ボトル・システムにより媒体を調製することもできる。

Claims (28)
- 6〜45の範囲のγ1/Δn2の比の値、60℃を越える透明点および−2.3以下のΔεを有し、
(1)下記式で表される化合物CC−3−V:
(2)1種類以上の式IAの化合物と、
(3)2種類以上の式IIの化合物と
を含有することを特徴とする、負の誘電異方性を有する極性化合物の混合物に基づいた液晶媒体。
R 1 およびR 2 は、互いに独立して、それぞれ無置換、CNまたはCF 3 でモノ置換、またはハロゲンで少なくともモノ置換されている15個までの炭素原子を有するアルキルまたはアルケニル基を表し、但し、これらの基において1または2以上のCH 2 基は、独立して、O原子同士が直接結合しないようにして、−O−、−S−、

- 誘電体として、請求項1〜27のいずれか1項に記載の液晶媒体を有することを特徴とする、ECB、PALCD、FFSまたはIPS効果に基づくアクティブマトリックスを備えた電気光学ディスプレイ。
