元素、例えばSmを含む、遷移金属がTiおよびNbか
らなる群から選択される少なくとも1つであることを特
徴とする遷移金属オキシサルファイドからなる光触媒。

する。特に少なくとも1つの遷移金属を含むオキシサル
ファイドからなる可視光活性な光触媒および水の分解用
光触媒に関する。
媒能を有する固体化合物に光を照射し、生成した励起電
子やホールで反応物を酸化、あるいは還元して目的物を
得る方法が既に知られている。中でも、水の光分解反応
は光エネルギー変換の観点から興味が持たれている。ま
た、水の光分解反応に活性を示す光触媒は、光吸収、電
荷分離、表面での酸化還元反応といった機能を備えた高
度な光機能材料と見ることができる。工藤、加藤等は、
タンタル酸アルカリ、アルカリ土類等が、水の完全光分
解反応に高い活性を示す光触媒であることを多くの先行
文献を挙げて説明している〔例えば、Catal.Lett.,58(1
999).153-155、Chem.Lett.,(1999),1207、表面,Vol.3
6,No.12(1998),625-645(文献Aという)〕。前記文献
Aにおいては、水を水素または/および酸素に分解する
反応を進めるのに有用な光触媒材料について解説してお
り、水の還元による水素生成反応、または酸化による酸
素生成反応および水の完全光分解反応用光触媒について
の多くの示唆をしている。また、白金、NiOなどの助
触媒を担持した光触媒などについいても言及している。
は、非金属としては酸素を含むものが主である。また、
多くの固体光触媒は価電子帯と伝導帯の間にある禁制帯
の幅、即ち、バンドギャップエネルギ−が大きいため
(>3eV)、低いエネルギーの可視光(エネルギー:3e
V未満)で作動することができない。一方、バンドギャ
ップエネルギーが小さく、可視光で電子、ホールを生ず
ることのできる従来の固体光触媒のほとんどは水の光分
解反応等の反応条件下で、例えばCdS、Cu−ZnS
等はバンドギャップは2.4eVであるが、酸化的な光
腐食作用を受けるため、触媒反応が限定されている。地
表に到達する太陽光のほとんどはエネルギーの小さい可
視光であり、太陽光で効率的に多様な触媒反応を進行さ
せるためには可視光で作動しかつ安定な光触媒が必要不
可欠である。しかしながら上述のように従来の技術で満
足できるものは存在しない。
(純度99.99%)の紫外・可視光吸収スペクトルを
測定すると、図5に示すように紫外から可視光550n
mのスペクトルを吸収することがわかった。また、様々
な研究者の報告によると、バンドギャップ2.4eVを
形成する価電子帯と伝導体は、電位的に酸素と水素を生
成する程度に余裕があることから、理論的には、水を前
記スペクトルにより水素と酸素に分解できる能力を持っ
ていると考えられるが、実際には、440nm以上の可
視光照射下で水の分解反応を行うと、水素は安定して生
成するものの、酸素の生成はまったく見られないことが
報告されている。これは、触媒表面の化学種の安定性が
悪いことにより触媒自体の光溶解(腐食作用)が起こる
こと、および固体内部で光励起により生じた正孔が表面
に移動した際に、水分子より表面のS2-を優先的に酸化
し酸化皮膜を形成することによるものである。以上のこ
とから、純粋な硫化物CdSは、440nm以上の波長
を有する可視光でプロトンを水素に還元できるが、水か
ら酸素を生成できるほど安定な材料でなく、その能力が
ないことがわかった。

に窒素原子を含有する金属化合物のバンドギャップエネ
ルギーは金属酸化物のそれに比べて小さくすることがで
きるであろうと言う推測の下に、適当な量の窒素原子と
結合した金属および金属化合物は長波長の可視光の吸収
によって励起電子とホールを生成することが可能とな
り、可視光で作動する光触媒の構築が可能であろうと考
えて、遷移金属を含むオキシナイトライトを合成し、可
視光で作動する光触媒を提案した(特願2000−25
6681)。また、多くの硫化物は価電子帯はS3p軌
道に由来し、酸化物におけるO2p軌道に比べて負の電
位に位置し、可視光吸収を達成するには有利な物質であ
ることも知られている。
光において、水素および酸素を安定に生成できる光触媒
を提供することである。ところで、前記したように、多
くの硫化物の価電子帯は酸化物のそれより負にあり、可
視光吸収特性を改善することが推測できるから、適当な
量の硫黄原子と結合した金属および金属化合物は長波長
の可視光の吸収によって励起電子とホールを生成するこ
とが可能となり、可視光で作動する光触媒の構築が可能
であろうと考えて、遷移金属の酸化物と適当な量の硫黄
原子と結合した遷移金属とが存在させた化合物を合成
し、光触媒特性を調べたところ、犠牲試薬の存在の下で
あるが、水素も酸素も形成できる光触媒として機能する
ことを見出し、前記本発明の課題を解決した。

る前記オキシサルファイドからなる光触媒であり、より
好ましくは、遷移金属からなる助触媒を担持させたこと
を特徴とする前記各オキシサルファイドからなる光触媒
であり、更に好ましくは、助触媒がPtであることを特
徴とする前記オキシサルファイドからなる光触媒であ
る。また、本発明は、前記いずれかにのオキシサルファ
イド光触媒からなる光水分解用触媒である。
あるいは硫化物と遷移金属酸化物あるいはその硫化物と
を所望の混合量で混合した後、耐熱性でコンタミネーシ
ョンを起こさない反応管、例えば石英管、ニオブ管など
管中に入れ、真空封緘後、昇温速度(昇温途中での一定
温度の保持を含めて)、加熱時間などを制御して焼成す
ることにより得ることができる。希土類酸化物としては
酸化サマリウム(Sm2O3)、酸化ランタン(La
2O3)、希土類硫化物としては硫化サマリウム(Sm2S
3)、硫化ランタン(La2S3)等を好ましいものとして挙
げることができる。また、遷移金属酸化物としては、酸
化チタン(TiO2)、酸化ニオブ(Nb2O5)、遷移金属硫
化物としては硫化チタン(TiS2)、硫化ニオブ(Nb
2S5)などを好ましいものとして挙げることができる。 B,前記焼成工程により得られた遷移金属を含むオキシ
サルファイド化合物は、助触媒を付与することにより、
触媒活性を向上させることができる。助触媒としては、
白金(Pt)、酸化ニッケル(NiO)などを挙げるこ
とができる。触媒に対する付与量は0.1重量%〜10重量
%の範囲である。助触媒の付与方法としては、従来の光
触媒への助触媒の付与方法を採用することができる。例
えば、Ptの場合には、テトラアンミンジクロロ白金
〔Pt(NH3)4Cl2〕水溶液を用いて触媒に含浸さ
せ、乾燥後、水素還元して付与することができる。
明する。本発明はこの実施例のみに限定されないことは
云うまでもない。
ウムSm2O3、酸化チタンTiO2及び硫化チタンTi
S2をそれぞれ1:1:1の比率で混合し、石英管に入
れた。それを真空封緘し、以下の条件で焼成を行った。
昇温速度15℃/1時間で室温から400℃にし、24
時間400℃に保つ。その後、20℃/1時間で100
0℃まで昇温を行い、7日間その温度を維持し、室温ま
で30℃/1時間で降温を行った。これにより目的生成
物を得た。助触媒である白金担持の付与。触媒に対して
1重量%に相当するテトラアンミンジクロロ白金Pt
(NH3)4Cl2を触媒に水溶液中で含浸させ、湯浴上
で乾燥した後、573Kで2時間水素により還元処理を
行うことにより得た。焼成後の物質のX線回折を図1に
示す。図中の回折ピークはすべてSm2Ti2O 5S2に帰
属され、Sm2Ti2O5S2の生成が確認された。
2に示す。図2より、650nmまでの光を吸収できる
ことが分かった。図3に上記の方法に従い、白金1重量
%担持した材料0.2gを10容量%メタノール水溶液
0.200dm-3に縣濁させ、440nm以上の可視光
を照射したときの、水素生成量の経時変化を示す。光源
は、500Wキセノンランプを用い、440nm以下の
波長光をカットする波長フィルターを通すことにより、
420nm以上の可視光を照射した。図3に示されるよ
うに、上記材料は、440nm以上の可視光照射下でメ
タノール水溶液から水素を定常的に生成できることがわ
かった。また、図4に上記材料0.2gを0.01モル
dm-3AgNO3水溶液に縣濁し、440nm以上の可
視光を照射したときの酸素生成量経時変化を示す。反応
は上記同様の条件で行った。上記材料は、440nm以
上の可視光照射下で硝酸銀水溶液から酸素を生成できる
ことがわかった。以上のことから、Sm2Ti2O5S2は
440nm以上の波長を有する可視光でプロトンを水素
に還元、及び水を酸素に酸化する能力を有することが確
認された。

および酸素生成反応の実験をした結果を参考のために説
明する。水素は安定して生成するものの、酸素の生成は
まったく見られないことが確認された。すなわち、純粋
な硫化物CdSは、440nm以上の波長を有する可視
光でプロトンを水素に還元できるが、水から酸素を生成
できるほど安定な材料でないことが分かった。

20nm以下であることを示す。従って、該吸収できる
光(紫外光)を用いた反応では、水を水素と酸素に分解で
きる能力を持っていることが分かる。しかし、当然こと
ながら、440nm以上の可視光照射下では、水素及び
酸素の生成は見られなかった。

く用いられる遷移金属であるNbを用いても同様の結果
が得られる。
触媒は地表に到達する太陽光の大部分を占める可視光
(650nmまで)で作動するものであり、太陽光で光
触媒反応を行うことによって化合物を生産することがで
きる。更に上記光触媒は実施例に示されるように可視光
で水を水素と酸素に分解する能力を有するため、太陽光
を次世代エネルギーとしての水素に変換する光触媒とし
て有望である。
