Es sind eine Reihe von Zusatzstoffen für Mineralschmieröle bekannt, deren Aufgabe es ist, z.B. den Viskositätsindex,
die Wärniestabilität, die Oxydationsbeständigkeit oder die Dispergierfähigkeit zu verbessern. Der Viskositätsindex ist
besonders wichtig, besonders bei Mehrbereichsölen, um Seh.iu.epölgemische
bereitzustellen, deren Viskosität/Temperatur-Kurven flacher sind als bei nicht modifizierten ölen.
Besondei-s geeignet als Viskositätsindexverbesserer sind
selektiv hydrierte Styrol/Ioopren-Zweiblockcopolymere, wie
sie in den US-Patentschriften 3 763 044 und 3 772 196 beschrieben
sind. Schmiermittel, die diese Zusatzstoffe enthalten, weisen einen ausgezeichneten Viskositätsindex auf,

bezogen auf die kinematische Viskosität bei 40 und 1OO°C.
Stellt man die Viskosität in Abhängigkeit von der Temperatur gemäss den im ASTM-Standard D^4l angegebenen Nomogrammen dar,
so ergibt sich ein im wesentlichen lineares Verhältnis im Temperaturbereich von 2K) bis 10O0C. Bei einigen dieser selektiv
hydrierten Styrol/Isopren-Copolymere sinkt jedoch die Viskosität bei Temperaturen um 1500C,und damit besteht kein
lineares Verhältnis mehr. Die Temperatur, bei der dies eintritt, nennt man Brechpunkttemperatur (Tfe).
Es wurden nun modifizierte Copolymere hergestellt, bei denen bei Temperaturen oberhalb 1000C ein besseres lineares Verhältnis
von Viskosität zu Temperatur und damit eine höhere kinematische Viskosität bei 1500C erzielt wird.
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft daher ein Schmiermittelgemisch,
das zum überwiegenden Teil aus einem Schmieröl, insbesondere einem Mineralschmieröl, und durch einen Gehalt an
etwa 0,1 bis etwa 15*0 Gewichtsprozent eines Viskositätsindexverbesserers
der allgemeinen Konfiguration A-B gekennzeichnet ist, in welcher
a) A ein sulfonierter Monoalkenylaren-Polymerblock mit einem mittleren Molekulargewicht von etwa 25 000 bis etwa
55 000 ist;

b) B ein hydrierter Polymerblock eines konjugierten/Diens mit
einem mittleren Molekulargewicht von etwa 20 000 bis etwa 150 000 ist, wobei mindestens 90 Prozent der olefinisch
ungesättigten Bindungen von. Block B durch Hy-

drierung reduziert worden sind;
c) das Gewichtsverhältnis von Block A zu Block B etwa 0,^5:1 bis etwa 0,8:1 beträgt und
d) der Schwefelgehalt des Blockcopolymeren mindestens etwa
0,1 und höchstens etwa 1,0 Gewichtsprozent beträgt.
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft auch die Viskositätsverbesserer
als solche, von denen angenommen wird, dass sie neu sind, sowie deren neutralisierte Derivate.
Der Grad der Sulfonierung des Copolymeren ist besonders kritisch, da bei einem zu niedrigen Sulfonierungsgrad die erwünschte
Verbesserung des Verhältnisses Viskosität/Temperatur nicht eintritt, während bei einem zu hohen Sulfonierungsgrad
ein Polymeres entsteht, das nicht öllöslich ist.
.Es wurde ausserdem festgestellt, dass das Molekulargewicht des
Monoalkenylaren-Polymerblocks für die Herstellung der erfindungsgemässen
Viskositätsindexverbesserer kritisch ist. Ein zu geringer Styrolgehalt bei einem bestimmten Gesamtmolekulargewicht
des Polymeren führt zu verminderter Eindickfähigkeit sowie einer geringeren Brechpunkttemperatur
des nicht sulfonierten Vorstufenpolymeren. Die Sulfonierung eines solchen Polymeren führt weder zu verbesserter Eindickfähigkeit
noch wird dadurch die Brechpunkttemperatur erhöht.
Als Monoalkenylarene des Polymerblocks A geeignet sind Styrol
und Methylstyrole, wie ^-Methylstyrol, Vinyltoluol und ande-

re am Ring methylierte Styrole oder deren Gemische. Als
Monomeres bevorzugt wird Styrol.
Block B besteht vor der Hydrierung zweckmässigerweise aus einem Isopren-Polymerblock, einem Butadien-Polymerblock oder
aus einem Isopren/Butadien-Copolymerblock. Wird als Monomeres Butadien verwendet, sollten vorzugsweise etwa 35 bis
75 Molprozent der kondensierten Butadien-Einheiten im Butadien-Polymerblock eine 1,2-Struktur aufweisen. Wird ein
solcher Polymerblock hydriert, erhält man ein Produkt, das ähnlich oder gleich ist wie ein normales Copolymeres aus
Äthylen und Buten-1 (EB). Wird als Monomeres Isopren verwendet, sollten vorzugsweise mindestens etwa 80 Molprozent der Isopren-Einheiten
eine 1,4-Struktur aufweisen, wobei es sich entweder um eine eis- oder um eine trans-Struktur handeln kann. Man
erhält dann ein Produkt, welches gleich oder ähnlich ist wie ein normales alternierendes Copolymeres aus Äthylen und
Propylen (EP). Als Monomeres bevorzugt ist Isopren.
Die Blockcopolymere können nach herkömmlichen Verfahren hergestellt
werden, z.B. unter Verwendung von Lithium-Initiatoren,
vorzugsweise Lithiumalkylen, wie Lithiumbutylen
oder Lithiumamylen.
Das mittlere Molekulargewicht des Polymerblocks A beträgt vorzugsweise etwa ^O 000 bis etwa 45 000. Das mittlere Molekulargewicht
des Polymerblocks B beträgt vorzugsweise etwa 50 000 bis etwa 120 000.

Die Bedingungen, unter denen das Vorstufen-Blockcopolymere
selektiv hydriert wird, sind derart, dass etwa 90 Prozent der olefinisch ungesättigten Doppelbindungen in Block B gesättigt
sind, vorzugsweise sogar mehr als 95 Prozent, und dass vorzugsweise höchstens 20 Prozent der aromatischen
Doppelbindungen von Block A hydriert werden. Es ist wichtig, dass das Blockeοpolymere den oben genannten Hydrierungsgrad
aufweist, damit die Oxydationsbeständigkeit ausreichend hoch ist. Die Hydrierung wird vorzugsweise so durchgeführt, dass
man das Vorstufen-Blockcopolymere in einem inerten Lösungsmittel, im allgemeinem einem Polymerisationslösungsmittel,
löst, ein Kobalt-, Nickel- oder Elsenearboxylat oder -alkoxid hinzufügt, welches mit einer Aluminiumalkylverbindung reduziert
worden ist, und bei geringen Temperaturen .von 20 bis 7O°C mit Wasserstoff beaufschlagt. Hierzu wird auf die US-Patentschrift
3 595 942 verwiesen.
Das durch selektive Hydrierung erhaltene Produkt kann mit Hilfe von Infrarot-Spektrometrie, Jodzahlbestimmung oder
Ozontitration auf noch vorhandene olefinisch ungesättigte Bindungen untersucht werden.

ist auch erforderlich, um die Blöcke vor der Sulfonierung zu inaktivieren. Vorzugsweise wird nur der Monoalkenylaren-Polymerblock
selektiv sulfoniert, da dies ein Zusammenschliessen der aromatischen Molekülteile zur Verbesserung
der Eindickflihlgkeit beviirkt, während die nicht sulfonier-

ten aliphatischen Molekülteile die erforderliche öllöslichkeit
bewirken. Neutralisierte Produkte, z.B. mit einer
erhaltene
Metall-oder Aminkomponente/Derivate von sulfonierten Produkten,
sind ebenfalls geeignet.
Die Sulfonierung findet im allgemeinen bei Temperaturen im Bereich von etwa -10 bis etwa +1000C statt und wird im allgemeinen
durchgeführt, während das Copolymere in einem inerten Medium, z.B. einem Halogenalkan, vorzugsweise Dichloräthan,
Dichlormethan oder Dichlorpropan, gequollen oder disper· giert vorliegt. Die Sulfonierung wird vorzugsweise in verdünnter
Lösung durchgeführt, um eine Gelbildung zu vermeiden oder doch auf ein Mindestmass zu reduzieren. Es werden
Temperaturen von 0 bis 70°C bevorzugt. Das SuIfoniermittel
ist nicht besonders kritisch, es sollten allerdings nur solche Sulfoniermittel verwendet werden, die keinen
wesentlichen Polymerabbau oder eine Polymervernetzung
verursachen. Geeignet für diesen Zweck ist z.B. eine Komplexverbindung aus Schwefeltrioxid mit einem Trialkylphosphat,
wie Triäthylphosphat, gelöst in einem Halogenalkan, wie 1,2-Dichloräthan. Die Sulfonierung kann auch in inerten,
im wesentlichen gesättigten Kohlenwasserstoffen, wie Alkanen oder Cycloalkanen, insbesondere Cyclopentan und Cyclohexan,
durchgeführt werden. Hierzu wird auf die US-Patentschrift 3 577 557 verwiesen.
Für die Leistungsfähigkeit der erfindungsgemässen Viskositätsindexverbesserer
ist der Sulfonierungsgrad besonders

kritisch. Der Schwefelgehalt im Blockcopolymeren muss höher als etwa 0,1 und geringer als 1,0 Gewichtsprozent, bezogen
auf das Gewicht des Copolymeren, betragen. Bei einem SuI-fonierungsgrad
von mehr als 1,0 Prozent Schwefel ist das Copolymere nicht mehr öllöslich und daher als Viskositätsindexverbesserer
in Mineralschmierölen ungeeignet. Vorzugsweise beträgt der Sulfonierungsgrad etwa 0,1 bis etwa 0,5
Gewichtsprozent Schwefel.
Im Anschluss an die Sulfonierung wird das Polymere zweckmässigerweise
in heissem Wasser ausgeflockt, zur Entfernung von Wasser ausgepresst, in einem Kohlenwasserstoff, wie Cyclohexan,
gequollen, mit einem Gemisch von Wasser und Alkohol aufgeschlämmt und wiederum in heissem Wasser ausgeflockt.
Falls erwünscht, können die sulfonierten Blockcopolymere in der freien Säureform verwendet oder ganz oder teilweise
neutralisiert werden, z.B. mit Metallen wie Calcium, Natrium, Kalium oder Lithium oder deren Oxiden oder Hydroxiden,
oder sie können mit einem Aminierungsmittel,- wie Ammoniak oder Aminen, umgesetzt werden. Der Polymerblock A
enthält vorzugsweise die Sulfonatreste -SOzH, -SO^-Metall,
/oder ■* ·*
-SOUiH^ und/SO^-Amino. Das sulfonierte Blockcopolymere wird
vorzugsweise mit einem Metallhydroxici, wie Calciumhydroxid
oder Natriumhydroxid, neutralisiert, denn die neutralisierten Polymere sind stabiler als Polymere in der freien Säureform.

Das erfindungsgemässe Reaktionsprodukt kann Schmierölgemischen, z.B. ölen für Kraftwagen-Kurbelgehäuse, in Konzentrationen
von etwa 0,1 bis etwa 15 Gewichtsprozent, vorzugsweise
etwa 0,1 bis 5 Gewichtsprozent, bezogen auf dar» Gesamtgemisch, einverleibt werden. Die erfindungsgeraässen
Zusatzstoffe können nicht nur Mineralschmierölen zugesetzt
werden sondern auch synthetischen ölen sowie deren Gemischen. Als synthetische Schmieröle sind nicht nur Kohlenwasserstoffe
sondern auch andere öle einschliesslich dibasische Säureester und deren Gemische geeignet. Zur leichteren Handhabung
kann man auch Konzentrate herstellen, die eine geringere Menge,z.B. 10 bis 45 Gewichtsprozent, des Reaktionsprodukts in einer grösseren Menge an Kohlenwasserstoff als
Verdünnungsmittel, z.B. 95 bis 55 Gewichtsprozent Mineralschmieröl, gegebenenfalls mit anderen Zusatzstoffen, enthalten.
Diese Sohmiermittelgemische oder -konzentrate können auch
noch andere herkömmliche Zusatzstoffe enthalten, wie Farbstoffe, Stockpunkterniedriger, verschleissverhindernde
weitere
Mittel, Antioxidantien,/Viskositätsindexverbesserer sowie
Mittel, Antioxidantien,/Viskositätsindexverbesserer sowie
andere aschefreie Dispergiermittel oder Reinigungsmittel. Die Beispiele erläutern die Erfindung.

Es wurden drei verschiedene Ausgangs- bzw. Vorstufenpolymere verwendet; siehe Tabelle I. Es handelt sich dabei
um selektiv hydrierte Styrol/Isopren-Zweiblockcopolymere.
Nur das Polymere A weist eine erfindungsgemässe Struktur
auf, der Styrolgehalt der anderen beiden Polymere ist zu gering.

bestimmt durch Ozontitration
Das Vorstufenpblymere wird mit folgendem Sulfoniermittel sulfoniert: 91 g Triäthy!phosphat werden in 470 g 1,2-Di~
chloräthan in trockner Stickstoffatmosphäre gelöst. Die
Lösung wird auf 5°C abgekühlt und unter ständigem Rühren
werden langsam 8o g flüssiges Schwefeltrioxid hinzugefügt. Die Endlösung weist eine Konzentration von In in aktivem
Schwefeltrioxid auf.
Alle Polymere wurden in gleicher V/eise sulfoniert, die Ergebnisse sind in Tabelle II zusammengefasst. Das Polymere

P wurde wie folgt "hergestellt: 15 g des Polymeren A werden
in 80O ml 1,2-Dichloräthan unter trockener Stickstoffatmosphäre
gelöst. Unter ständigem Rühren werden langsam innerhalb von 10 Minuten 4o ml frisches Sulfoniermittel hinzugefügt.
Das Gemisch wird 48 Stunden unter Stickstoff bei Raumtemperatur
gerührt.
Das Reaktionsprodukt wird mit 500 ml deionisiertem Wasser abgeschreckt und das Dichloräthan flash-destilliert. Das
Wasser-Polymer-Gemisch wird 90 Minuten am Rückfluss erhitzt, um etwa vorhandene Ester (z.B. Sulfonsäureäthylester)
zu verseifen. Die die nicht umgesetzte Säure enthaltende Wasserphase wird dekantiert und das Polymere in 500 ml
Cyclohexan gelöst. (Die Polymerlösung könnte auch an diesem Punkt gewaschen und das Cyclohexan entfernt werden. Man
erhält dann das SuIfonderivat des Polymeren in der freien
Säureform.) Dann werden 3 S (Überschuss) Calciumhydroxid
und 500 ml deionisiertes Wasser hinzugefügt. Das Gemisch
wird 60 Minuten am Rückfluss erhitzt, mit Wasser gewaschen, um überschüssiges Calciumhydroxid zu entfernen, und getrocknet.
Man erhält 12-15 g eines schwach sulfonierten Polymeren in Form des Calciumsalzes.

Die sulfonierten Polymere und die Vorstufenpolymere werden zu einem Verkaufsfertigen öl konfektioniert, das Schmiermittelgemisch
wird in verschiedenen Tests untersucht. Die Ergebnisse dieser Tests sind in Tabelle III zusammengefasst,
Wie aus Tabelle III ersichtlich, weisen die erflndungsgemässen Schmiermittelgemische (welche die Polymere D, E und
F enthalten) eine bedeutend höhere kinematische Viskos!tHt
bei 150 C auf als die Vorstufenpolymere.

Die erfindungsgemässen Viskositätsverbesserer weisen auch
eine überraschend verbesserte Dispergierfähigkeit auf, welche anhand eines Flecken-Dispergier-Tests bestimmt wurde.
1 Teil einer lgewichtsprozentigen Polymerlösung in HVI-lOO-öl wird mit 2 Teilen verbrauchtem, Schlamm enthaltendem
öl vermischt und über Nacht auf 15O°C erhitzt. Dann werden auf Filterpapier Flecken aufgetragen und es wird
das Verhältnis der Durchmesser von Schlammfleck zu ölfleck nach 2*\ Stunden gemessen. Je höher der Wert, desto besser
ist die Dispergierfähigkeit. Bei dem Vorstufenpolymer lag der Wert bei nur 36,1I Prozent, während der Wert des Polymeren
D 56,6 Prozent betrug.

Claims (7)
1. Schmiermittelgemisch, das zum überwiegenden Teil aus einem Schmieröl, insbesondere einem Mineralschmieröl, besteht,
g.ekennzeichne t durch einen Gehalt von etwa 0,1 bis etwa 15*0 Gewichtsprozent eines Viskositäts-
indexverbesserers der allgemeinen Konfiguration A-B, in
welcher
a) A ein sulfonierter Monoalkenylaren-Polymerblock mit
einem mittleren Molekulargewicht von etwa 25 000
bis etwa 55 000 ist;
C4-5
b) B ein hydrierter Polymerblock eines konjugierten /-Diens
mit einem mittleren Molekulargewicht von etwa 20 000 bis etwa 150 000 ist, wobei mindestens 90 Prozent der
olefinisch ungesättigten Bindungen von Block B durch Hydrierung reduziert worden sind;
c) das Gewichtsverhältnis von Block A zu Block B etwa 0,45:1 bis etwa 0,8:1 beträgt und
d) der Schwefelgehalt des Blockcopolymeren mindestens etwa 0,1 und höchstens etwa 1,0 Gewichtsprozent
beträgt.
2. Schmiermittelgemisch nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Polymerblock B vor der Hydrierung ein
Isopren-Blockpolymeres ist.
3. Schmiermittelgemisch nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Monoalkenylaren Styrol ist.

gekennzeichnet, dass höchstens etwa 20 Prozent der aromatischen Doppelbindungen von Block A durch Hydrierung reduziert

teilweise neutralisiert ist.
6. Schmiermittelgemisch nach Anspruch 1 bis 5* dadurch
gekennzeichnet, dass der Polymerblock A die Sulfonatreste
-SO^H, -S0,-Metall, -S(UNH^ und/oder SO^-Amino aufweist.
7. Viskositätsindexverbesserer nach Anspruch 1 bis 6
in Form eines Blockcopolyrneren A-B reit den Merkmalen a)
bis d) .
