Description
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zum Oligomerisieren von Ce- bis Cu-Olefinen unter Verwendung eines
Bortrifluoridkatalysators.
In der US-PS 33 82 291 ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Olefinpolymeren unter Verwendung
eines Bortrifluoridkatalysators beschrieben. Der Katalysator umfaßt einen BF3-Komplex und einen Promotor,
der beispielsweise eine Carbonsäure sein kann. Das Verfahren wird durchgeführt, indem ein Strom des zu
polymerisierenden Olefins, der mit BF3 gesättigt ist, in
einer Reaktionszone zusammen mit einem Strom aus BF3, das mit dem Promotor in einen Komplex überführt
ist, eingeführt wird. Die Zugaberate des BFrPromotorstroms
in bezug auf die Rate des Olefinstroms wird so eingestellt, daß lediglich eine katalytische Menge
zugeführt wird. Die Menge liegt vorzugsweise bei 0,006 bis 0,01 Mol Promotor je 100 g Olefinbeschickung. Die
Temperatur liegt im allgemeinen unter 60° C, bevorzugt zwischen 0 und 35° C.
Aus der DE-AS 15 93 358 ist ein Verfahren zur Oligomerisation von 1-Olefinen mit 5 bis 20 Kohlenstoffatomen
zu öligen flüssigen Oligomeren in Gegenwart von BF3 und einem Aktivator oder Promotor
bekannt. Bei dem bekannten Verfahren wird ein Strom des wasserfreien, mit Bortrifluorid gesättigten 1-Olefins
und einen Strom des mit einem Aktivator im Molverhältnis 1 :1 komplex gebundenen Bortrifluorids
in eine Reaktionszone geleitet und dort unter den üblichen Bedingungen oligomerisiert, wobei man die
Zuflußraten der beiden Ströme so einstellt, daß wenigstens 0,006 Mol des Aktivators je 100 g des
1 -Olefins anwesend sind.
Als Aktivatoren sollen bei dem bekannten Verfahren unter anderem Wasser, Alkohol oder bestimmte Säuren,
wie Essigsäure, Propionsäure oder Buttersäure, eingesetzt werden. Das bekannte Verfahren wird noch nicht
allen Ansprüchen gerecht, insbesondere ist die Ausbeute an Oligomeren mit einem erwünschten Gehalt an
Trimeren teilweise zu gering. Außerdem ist bei den bekannten Produkten die Viskosität vielfach zu hoch,
und schließlich besteht bei Verwendung von Essigsäure als Promotor die Gefahr einer Blockierung der
Oligomensierungsanlage.
Aufgabe der Erfindung ist die Schaffung eines Verfahrens zum Oligomerisieren von CV bis Ci2-OIeFinen
in Anwesenheit eines mit einem Promotor versetzten Bortrifluoridkatalysators in Gegenwart von
freiem Bortrifluorid zu einem an Trimeren reichen Produkt, bei dem eine hohe Umwandlung des Olefins in
das Trimere erhalten und Produkte mit einer gewünschten
Viskosität erhalten werden, bei deren Herstellung nicht die Gefahr einer Blockierung der Oligomerisierungsanlage
besteht
Die Lösung dieser Aufgabe erfolgt erfindungsgemäß durch ein Verfahren zum Oligomerisieren von Ce- bis
Ci2-Olefinen in Anwesenheit eines mit einer wenigstens
3 Kohlenstoffatome aufweisenden Carbonsäure als Promotor versetzten Bortrifluoridkatalysators in Gegenwart
von freiem Bortrifluorid zu einem an Trimeren reichen Produkt, das dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, daß
man die Oligomerisierung mit n-Valeriansäure, iso-Valeriansäure, einem Gemisch aus Valeriansäuren oder
2-Methylbuttersäure als Promotor bei einer Temperatur von 0 bis 200C durchführt, wobei das Molverhältnis von
Promotor zu Olefin zwischen 0,005 :1 und 0,05 :1 liegt.
Bei Ausführung des Verfahrens gemäß der Erfindung wird ein überraschender technischer Fortschritt erzielt
Es werden hohe Ausbeuten an Oligomeren mit einem hohen Gehalt an Trimeren und einer vergleichsweisen
niedrigen Viskosität erhalten.
Carbonsäuren mit niedrigerem Kohlenstoffgehalt, beispielsweise Essigsäure, können wegen des hohen
Schmelzpunktes der sich bildenden Bortrifluorid-Addukte nicht mit Erfolg verwendet werden. Diese
Addukte neigen zur Verfestigung in der Vorrichtung
J5 und zur Blockierung der Rohrleitungen.
Die erfindungsgemäß eingesetzten Promotoren, Vaieriansäure (CH3(CH2)3CO2H), Isovalei iansäure
((CH3J2CHCH2CO2H) und Methylbuttersäure führen bei
ihrer Anwendung, wie Versuche gezeigt haben, nicht zu derartigen Schwierigkeiten und ergeben überlegene
Ausbeuten an Produkten mit hohem Gehalt an Trimeren. Gemische der Säuren können bevorzugt
verwendet werden, z. B. Gemische der Valeriansäuren und ein racemisches Gemisch von D- und L-2-Methylbuttersäure.
Die trimerreichen Polyolefine sind als Grundflüssigkeit für synthetische Schmierflüssigkeiten, insbesondere
für hydraulische Flüssigkeiten, die über einen weiten Temperaturbereich angewendet werden sollen, wertvoll.
Die Oligomerisationstemperatur soll auf einem Wert nicht über 200C gehalten werden, da die Ausbeuten an
dem gewünschten Trimeren und den höheren Oligomeren bei höheren Temperaturen gering sind und
wesentliche Mengen der Carbonylgruppe den Oligomeren einverleibt werden. Dies verschlechtert deren
Brauchbarkeit. Die bevorzugte Temperatur liegt im Bereich von 5 bis 15° C. Der verwendete Katalysator soll
bei der gewählten Temperatur flüssig sein. Katalysato-
bo ren mit einem Gefrierpunkt oberhalb 200C sind daher
von der Verwendung in diesem Verfahren ausgeschlossen.
Die Oligomerisation kann vorzugsweise mit einem Molverhältnis von Carbonsäurepromotor ze» Olefin von
t>5 0,005 :1 bis 0,015 :1 durchgeführt werden.
Die Oligomerisation wird in Gegenwart von freiem Bortrifluorid durchgeführt. Dies geschieht in einfacher
Weise dadurch, daß zwei Ströme in die Reaktionszone
eingeführt werden, von denen der eine den Säure/BF3-Komplexpromotor
und der andere einen Strom des mit BF3 gesättigten Olefins enthält Das Olefin kann mit
Bortrifluorid gesättigt werden, indem Bortrifluoridgas durch das Olefin geleitet wird, bis die gewünschte
Menge Bortrifluorid absorbiert ist Normalerweise ist ein Molverhältnis von Säure zu BF3 wie 1 :1 bevorzugt
Die Technik der Einführung von zwei Strömen in die Reaktionszone vermeidet lokale Überhitzung mit der
nachfolgenden Gefahr der Verschlechterung der Qualitat
des Produktes und der Reproduzierbarkeit des Verfahrens.
Da das Trimere (und höhere Oligomere) das gewünschte Produkt zur Verwendung in synthetischen
Schmiermitteln darstellt, werden das nichtumgesetzte Monomere und die Dimerfraktion gewöhnlich entfernt
Dies kann in einfacher Weise durch Destillation des Reaktionsgemisches erfolgen. Das nichtunigeseizte
Monomere und das Dimere können Jann rückgeführt werden.
Bei synthetischen Kohlenwasserstoff-Schmiermitteln ist die Verwendung eines vollkommen gesättigten
Materials gleichfalls erwünscht Daher kann das Reaktionsgemisch hydriert werden, um irgendwelche
vorhandene Ungesättigtheit zu beseitigen. Die Hydrierung erfolgt vorzugsweise, nachdem das nichtumgesetzte
Monomere und die Dimerfraktion entfernt sind, so daß die Rückführung der monomeren und dimeren
Olefine ermöglicht wird und die Hydrierstufe wirtschaftlich ausgeführt wird. }0
Die Haltbarkeit bzw. Lagerfähigkeit der C5-Säure/
BF3-Adduktkatalysatoren ist ausgezeichnet. Sie leisten praktisch das gleiche nach einer beträchtlichen Lagerzeit.
Zur Herstellung synthetischer Kohlenwasserstoff-Schmiermittel ist die Verwendung von Decen-1 als
Olefin bevorzugt. Es können jedoch auch andere Olefine mit 6 bis 12 Kohlenstoffatomen durch dieses Verfahren
oligomerisiert werden, z. B. Hexen, Hepten, Nonen, Undecen und Dodecen. Gemische der Olefine können
gleichfalls verwendet werden, z. B. ergibt ein Gemisch aus C6- bis Ci2-1-Olefinen mit einer durchschnittlichen
Kettenlänge von etwa 10 Kohlenstoffatomen ein zufriedenstellendes Schmiermittel.
Die Erfindung wird nachstehend anhand von Beispielen näher erläutert.

Bortrifluorid wird in ein Gemisch aus Valeriansäuren eingeblasen, bis 1 Mol-Äquivalent des Halogenids
absorbiert ist. Die Bildung des äquimolaren Adduktes erweist sich a's hoch-exotherm und erfordert starke
Kühlung. Die Temperatur wird während dieser Herstellung unter 50° C gehalten. Die erhaltene Promotorlö- γ,
sung, C5Hi0O2-BF3 (Nr. 1 der Tabelle I) wird dann
fortschreitend unter Rühren gekühlt und ihr Gefrierpunkt als unter -7O0C liegend ermittelt Bei den
Herstellungsweisen 2 bis 9 wurden andere Carbonsäuren anstelle der gemischten Valeriansäuren eingesetzt,
und in sonst mit den obigen identischen Versuchen wurde der Gefrierpunkt des Adduktes ermittelt Die
Ergebnisse sind in Tabelle I wiedergegeben.

Das Addukt der Essigsäure C2H4O2-BF3 hatte einen
Gefrierpunkt von 27° C (Nr. 2) und ist daher von der Verwendung für das Oligomerisieren ausgeschlossen.
Sämtliche andere Säuren bildeten Addukte, die über den Temperaturbereich von 0 bis 20° C flüssig sind und
können in diesem Verfahren verwendet werden.

Die folgenden Beispiele geben die Überlegenheit der durch Säure beschleunigten Katalysatoren bei der,
Herstellung der Polyolefine wieder. Das Verhältnis von Trimerem zu Tetramerem und höheren kann vier oder
sogar höher sein.
Der mit Promotor versetzte BF3-Katalysator und ein
Strom von mit Bortrifluorid gesättigtem 1-Decen werden getrennt zugemessen und gleichzeitig in ein
sauberes, trockenes, mit Glas ausgekleidetes, auf 10° C gehaltenes Gefäß eingeführt, das mit Bortrifluorid auf
einen Druck von 50 bis 100 mm Hg unter Druck gehalten wird. Die Zugaberate wird durch die
Kühlkapazität der Anlage bestimmt. Das Gefäß wird gefüllt und bei der obigen Temperatur und dem Druck
während des in der folgenden Tabelle II gezeigten Zeitraums gehalten. Das Produkt wird dann abgeschreckt,
mit Wasser bis zum Neutralpunkt gewaschen und schließlich zur Entfernung von Monomeren! und

Ein Vergleich der Beispiele 1 und 2 zeigt, daß eine Erhöhung der Promotorsäurekonzentration zu einer
erhöhten Monomerenumwandlung in der Zeiteinheit ohne Einfluß auf weder den Polymerisationsgrad noch
die Produktqualität führt. Aus der Tabelle ist zu entnehmen, daß die Umwandlungen bei dieser Temperatur
und bei diesen Promotorkonzentrationen durch längere Haltezeiten vergleichbar gemacht werden
können.
Im Gegensatz zu mit Wasser und Alkohol beschleunigten Oligomerisationen führen Umsetzungen mit den
C3- und höheren Carbonsäuren des vorliegenden Verfahrens zu abnehmenden Decenumwandlungen bei
erhöhten Temperaturen. Es wurde festgestellt, daß die mittlere Decenumwandlung 87% bei 10°C (Beispiel 2),
jedoch nur 60% bei 30° C (Beispiel 3) beträgt. In deutlicher Weise wurde festgestellt, daß die Ausbeute
bei einem Durchgang an C30- und höheren Olefinen 70% bei 10°C (Beispiel 2), jedoch nur 34% bei 30°C (Beispiel
3) beträgt. Die Herabsetzung der Umwandlung mit zunehmender Reaktionstemperatur geht auf den Verbrauch
des Promotors durch Esterbildung zurück, die bei hoher Temperatur begünstigt wird. Im allgemeinen
führen daher Oligomerisationstemperaturen von über etwa 20° C zu geringer Olefinumwandlung und somit zu
geringer Trimerenausbeute, während Temperaturen unterhalb 0°C zu nichtbefriedigenden Viskositäten für
viele Anwendungen (Beispiel 4) wegen der relativ niedrigen Verhältnisse von Trimerem zu Tetramerem
und höheren führen.
Zu Vergleichszwecken wurde eine Reihe von Olefinoligomerisationen durchgeführt, wobei jedoch
einzeln mit Wasser (Beispiel 5), Alkohol (Beispiel 6) und Essigsäure (Beispiel 7) als Promotor versetzte Bortrifluorid-Katalysatoren
bei den in der obigen Tabelle I angegebenen Temperaturen verwendet wurden. Aus den so erhaltenen Vergleichsdaten ist ersichtlich, daß
die Oligomerisation unter Verwendung von mit Wasser versetztem (Beispiel 5) und mit Alkohol versetztem
(Beispiel 6) Bortrifluorid-Katalysator zu einer relativ niedrigen Trimerausbeute führt. Es war notwendig, die

Leitungen zu erhitzen, um das Essigsäure-Bortrifluorid-Addukt zu dem Reaktor zu leiten (Beispiel 7). Selbst
dann verfestigte sich das Addukt (Fp. 27°), wenn es in Kontakt mit dem auf 15° C gehaltenen Reaktor kam und
setzte sich am Boden des Behälters ab. Nach 2stündigem Kontakt zwischen flüssigem Olefin und festem Katalysator
waren lediglich 24% des Olefins umgewandelt, was zu einer Cw-Prodiiktausbeiite vnn nnr 13,6% führt.
Andererseits ergab die Oligomerisation unter Anwendung von mit Valeriansäure versetztem Bortrifluoridkataiysator
(Beispiele 1 und 2) eine zufriedenstellende Verbesserung der Trimerausbeute.

Das oben beschriebene Verfahren wurde unter Anwendung einer Temperatur von 10° C, einer Promotorkonzentration
von 0,014 MoI Promotor/100 g Decen, einer Zugabezeit von 45 bis 60 Minuten und einer
1 stündigen Haltezeit wiederholt. Die eingeführte Decenmenge betrug in jedem Fall 150 g.
Die als Promotoren verwendeten Säuren waren n-Valeriansäure, Isovaleriansäure, gemischte Valeriansäuren
(n- und iso-) und DL-2-Methylbuttersäure.
Die Ergebnisse sind in der folgenden Tabelle III wiedergegeben.

Claims (3)
1. Verfahren zum Oligomerisieren von Q- bis
Ci2-Olefinen in Anwesenheit eines mit einer
wenigstens 3 Kohlenstoffatome aufweisenden Carbonsäure als Promotor versetzten Bortrifluoridkatalysators
in Gegenwart von freiem Bortrifluorid zu einem an Trimeren reichen Produkt, dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß man die Oligomerisierung mit n-Valeriansäure, iso-Valeriansäure, einem
Gemisch aus Valeriansäuren oder 2-MethyIbuttersäure als Promotor bei einer Temperatur von 0 bis
20° C durchführt, wobei das Molverhältnis von Promotor zu Olefin zwischen 0,005 :1 und 0,05 :1
liegt
2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man mit einem Molverhältnis von
Promotor zu Olefin von 0,005 :1 bis 0,015 :1 arbeitet
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man bei einer Temperatur von
5 bis 15° C oligomerisiert
