Die Erfindung betrifft die Verwendung von Tris-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxy-phenyl)-phosphat
zur ■ Stabilisierung von Polypropylen. '
Die meisten organischen Materialien unterliegen in Gegenwart von Sauerstoff dem Abbau; dieser wird
durch erhöhte Temperaturen beschleunigt. Häufig treten bei Herstellungsverfahren während der Verar-.beitung
dieser Materialien hohe Temperaturen auf, und daher wird für viele Materialien, sogar während
der Herstellungsstufe, irgendein Stabilisator benötigt. Andere Materialien · werden durch die Temperaturen
während der Herstellung nicht verändert, jedoch unterliegen sie dem Abbau durch Alterung.
Aus den belgischen Patentschriften 637 444 und 637 445 ist die Verwendung von Hydrochinoncarbonsäureestern
bzw. Hydrochinoncarbaminsäureestern als Oxydationsinhibitoren bekannt.
Aus der deutschen Auslegeschrift 1 065 170 und der britischen Patentschrift 923 190 ist ferner die Verwendung
von Triarylphosphiten als Stabilisierungsmittel bekannt.
Die Stabilisatorwirkung der in den belgischen Patentschriften beschriebenen Verbindungen ist jedoch ziemlich gering; mit diesen Verbindungen stabili-
siertes Polypropylen zeigt nämlich bereits nach verhältnismäßig kurzer Zeit Abbauerscheinungen. Auch
bei Verwendung eines entsprechenden Phosphites steigt die Länge des Zeitraumes, in welchem Polypropylen
gegenüber Oxydationseinflüssen geschützt ist, nur unbedeutend an. -
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist die Verwendung von Tris - (3,5 - di - tert. - butyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl) - phosphat
in Mengen von 0,001 bis 5 Gewichtsprozent, bezogen auf die Polymerisatmenge, gegebenenfalls in Kombination
mit Dilaurylthiodipropionat zum Stabilisieren von Polypropylen gegen Einwirkung von Sauerstoff.
Überraschenderweise wurde gefunden, daß Tris-(3,5 -di- tert. -butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-phosphat ein
. bedeutend wirksamerer Oxydationsstabilisator für Polypropylen ist als die bisher bekannten als Stabilisatoren
verwendeten Verbindungen und daß die Extraktionsfestigkeit von mit Tris-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-phosphat
stabilisierten Polypropylene besonders groß ist. ■ .
Die durch Tris-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-phosphat stabilisierten Polypropylene zeichnen sich
durch eine außergewöhnlich hohe Temperaturstabilität und Widerstandsfähigkeit gegenüber Abbau durch
Sauerstoff über einen langen Zeitraum hinweg aus.
Das Tris-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-phosphat wird durch Umsetzung von 2,6-Di-tert.-butylp-hydrochinon
mit einem Phosphortrihalogenid oder Phosphoroxyhalogenid hergestellt. Bevorzugte Phosphorreaktionspartner
sind Phosphortribromid, -trichlorid, -oxybromid und -oxychlorid, besonders die chlorenthaltenden Reaktionspartner.
In den folgenden Beispielen wird die Herstellung von Tris - (3,5 - di - tert. -butyl - 4- hydroxyphenyl) - phosphat
beschrieben und die Erfindung erläutert. ;
In einen Reaktionskessel, der mit Rührwerk, Thermometer, Flüssigkeitszugabemitteln und Kühlmitteln
ausgestattet war, wurden 8,6 Teile 2,6-di-tert.-Butylp-hydrochinon,:
3,9 Teile Triäthylamin und 70 Teile Diäthyläther eingebracht. Der Abdampfraum oberhalb
der flüssigen Reaktionspartner wurde durch eine Stickstoffatmosphäre ersetzt, die während der weiteren.
Reaktion beibehalten wurde. Eine Lösung von 1,99 Teilen Phosphoroxychlorid in 18 Teilen Diäthyläther
wurde unter Rühren dem Reaktionskessel zugegeben. Die Reaktionstemperatur wurde während dieser
Zugabe bei ungefähr 30° C gehalten. Das Reaktionsgemisch wurde dann etwa 12 Stunden gerührt, wobei
während dieser Zeitdauer eine Triäthylaminhydrochloridausfällung gebildet wurde. Diese Ausfällung
wurde abfiltriert und das Lösungsmittel dann von dem Filtrat durch Verdampfen unter Vakuum (etwa 20 mm
Hg) entfernt. Der verbleibende Rückstand wurde aus einem Methanol-Wasser-Gemisch umkristallisiert
unter Bildung weißer Kristalle mit einem Schmelzpunkt von 201 bis 2040C. Das Infrarotspektrum entsprach
dem für Tris-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-phosphat. Eine Analyse hinsichtlich des Kohlenstoff-, Wasserstoff- und Phosphorgehalts wurde vorgenommen.

In einen Reaktionskessel, der wie im Beispiel 1 ausgestattet ist, werden 667 Teile 2,6-Di-tert.-butyl-p-hydrochinon
und 1500 Teile Toluol eingebracht. Stickstoff wurde durch den Kessel geleitet, bis die gesamte
Luft entfernt war, und die Stickstoffatmosphäre wurde während der weiteren Reaktion beibehalten. Der
Kesselinhalt wurde unter Rühren auf Rückflußtemperatur des Lösungsmittels erhitzt. Während die Reaktion
unter Rückfluß gehalten wurde, wurden 153,5 Teile Phosphoroxychlorid während einer Zeitdauer von
einer Stunde zugegeben. Kühlen wurde durch Rückfluß des Lösungsmittels bewirkt. Nach der Phosphoroxychloridzugabe
wjrd das Reaktionsgemisch eine zusätzliche Stunde unter Rückfluß genommen. Man
läßt dann abkühlen, und unmittelbar nach Abfallen unter 90° C werden 1000 Teile Wasser dem Reaktionskessel zugegeben und das Gemisch 15 Minuten gerührt.
Das Wasser wird abgezogen und die Reaktionspartner dann mit 1000 Teilen einer 5% igen Natriumcarbonatlösung
gewaschen. Diese Lösung wird abgezogen und das Toluollösungsmittel dann unter Verringerung
des Drucks im Reaktionskessel auf 50 mm entfernt. Das Toluol wird langsam abdestilliert, bis der
Reaktionskesselinhalt 150° C erreicht. Das verblek
bende Material wird in einer minimalen Menge heißem Hexan gelöst und die Hexanlösung dann auf
O0C gekühlt, wodurch das Produkt zum Ausfüllen und
zum Bilden einer Schlämme veranlaßt wird. Die Reaktionsmasse wird dann filtriert und das Tris-(3,5-di-tertbutyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-phosphat
erhalten.
Eines der Merkmale des vorliegenden Stabilisators ist, daß er keine Verfärbung verursacht, wenn er in
transparentem Polypropylen verwendet wird.
Die in Polypropylen verwendete Stabilisatormenge kann von 0,001 bis 5 Gewichtsprozent schwanken. Im
allgemeinen werden ausgezeichnete Ergebnisse erhalten,
wenn dem Polypropylen von 0,1 bis 3 Gewichtsprozent Stabilisator einverleibt werden.
Zur Erläuterung der durch die Erfindung geschaffenen überlegenen Stabilisierungswirkungen wurden
Untersuchungen durchgeführt, wobei im Handel erhältliches Polypropylen verwendet wurde. Diese Untersuchungen
sind als »Ofen-Alterungs-Untersuchungen« bekannt und werden in der Kunststoffiridustrie
als Gradmesser der Stabilität gegenüber Oxydation angesehen. In diesen Untersuchungen wurden kleine
Polypropylenproben mit dem Gehalt des Untersuchungsstabilisators hergestellt. Diese Untersuchungsproben
werden in einen Luftumlaufofen eingebracht, der auf eine Temperatur von 15O0C gehalten
wurde. Für jede Polypropylen-Stabilisator-Zubereitung werden fünf Proben hergestellt, und das Untersüchungskriterium
ist die Zeit (in Stünden), bis zu der drei der fünf Proben Zeichen von Zerfall zeigen. Der
Abbau wird durch Rißbildung, Verfärbung oder durch irgendeine visuell erkennbare Veränderung der Probe
bewiesen.
Die Untersuchungsproben werden hergestellt durch 3minutiges Mischen des zu untersuchenden Stabilisators
mit Polypropylenpulver in einem »Waring-Blender«. Das Gemisch wird dann zu einer Platte von
15,2 χ 15,2 cm mit einer Stärke von entweder 0,635 mm oder 1,5875 mm geformt. Dieses wird in einer Formpresse
bei 2040C und mit 352 kg Druck bewirkt. Jede
Platte wird dann in 12,7 χ 25,4 mm große Untersuchungsproben
geschnitten, um die fünf Proben zu erhalten. Diese Proben werden dann den Ofen-Alterungs-Untersuchungen
unterworfen.
Zum Vergleich der Stabilisierungsadditive dieser Erfindung wurden Untersuchungen durchgeführt, wobei
verschiedene, im Handel erhältliche Stabilisatoren mit dem erfindungsgemäßen Stabilisator verglichen
wurden. Die Ergebnisse sind in der nächfolgenden Tabelle zusammengestellt: '
Wie aus der obigen Tabelle zu ersehen, erhöht der erfindungsgemäße Zusatz die Ofenlebensdauer des
Polypropylens etwa um das 700fache, gegenüber Polypropylen ohne Zusatz, und es wird eine so hohe
Lebensdauer wie das 11- bis 17fache gegenüber zwei bekannten Antioxydationsmitteln erhalten. Aus diesen
Angaben ist klar erkennbar, daß der erfindungsgemäße Zusatz anderen bekannten Stabilisatoren wesentlich
überlegen sind.
Gemische mit dem Gehalt von 1% Dilaurylthio-dipropionat
und 99% Stabilisator bis zu solchen mit dem Gehalt von 99% Dilaurylthiodipropionat und 1%
Stabilisator können verwendet werden. Beste Ergebnisse werden gewöhnlich mit Stabilisierungsgemischen
erhalten, die 50 bis 66% Dilaurylthiodipropionat und von 34 bis 50% Tris-3,5-Verbindung enthalten.
Dilaurylthiodipropionat kann zur Erzielung einer erhöhten Stabilität unter Verwendung der gleichen
Konzentration Stabilisierungsmittel oder zur Erzielung der gleichen.Stabilität mit weniger Stabilisierungsmittel
verwendet werden. Obgleich Dilaurylthiodipropionat (DLTDP) allein ,als solches bei der
Stabilisierung von Polypropylen nur mäßig wirksam ist, bringt es, wenn es mit Tris-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-phosphat
verwendet wird, eine synergetischeWirkung, einen von der verwendeten Stabilisatormenge
her völlig unerwarteten Grad an Stabilisierung. Diese Wirkung wird durch die nachfolgenden
Werte belegt, die bei Verwendung des vorausgehend beschriebenen Ofen-Alterungstests erhalten wurden.

Trotz der Tatsache, daß die Probe 4, die das synergetische Gemisch enthält, nur ein Drittel so viel Tris-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-phosphat
enthält als die vorausgehende Probe 3, so ist zu ersehen, daß sie im wesentlichen die gleiche Ofenlebensdauer auf- ■
weist. Das kann nur einer synergetischen Wechselwirkung zwischen DLTDP und Stabilisator zugeschrieben
werden, weil DLTDP allein, sogar bei 0,3 Gewichtsprozent (Probe 2), eine Ofenlebensdauer
von nur 288 Stunden erbringt. ■ Die Probe 4 mit DLDTP enthielt nur ein Drittel so viel Tris-(3,5-di-.
tert.-butyl-4-hydfoxyphenyl)-phosphatals die Probe 3,
sie weist aber eine unerwartet lange Ofenalterungslebensdauer auf. Damit ist eine synergetische oder
streckende Funktion zwischen DLTDP und dem Phosphat-Stabilisator klar erwiesen.
In der folgenden Tabelle werden die Oxydationsinhibierwirkungen von jeweils einem typischen Ver-
treter der Verbindungen der belgischen Patentschrift 637 444 bzw. 637 445 denen des erfindungsgemäß verwendeten
Tris-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-phosphates sowie eines entsprechenden Phosphites bei
Polypropylen zweier verschiedener Provenienzen vergleichend gegenübergestellt. Es wird dabei der gleiche
»Ofen-Alterungs-Test« angewandt, der weiter oben bereits beschrieben wurde. . .

Weiterhin wurden noch Versuche zur Bestimmung der Extraktionswirkung von heißem Wasser durchgeführt.
Da Polypropylenartikel gegenüber heißem Wasser widerstandsfähig sein sollen, sind diese Versuche
im Hinblick auf die große praktische Bedeutung der Heißwasser-Widerstandsfähigkeit von Polypropylen
äußerst wichtig. Es wurden bei diesen Versuchen jeweils fünf Proben zusammengefaßt und eine gewisse
. gleichbleibende Zeit in siedendes Wasser eingetaucht, getrocknet und anschließend direkt mit einem anderen
Probensatz, der nicht durch Wasser extrahiert war, verglichen. Der Verlust in der Gebrauchsdauer vor
dem Versagen ist ein Maß für die Widerstandsfähigkeit gegenüber einer Extraktion durch heißes Wasser. Die
Werte sind in der folgenden Tabelle wiedergegeben.

Beide Tabellen zeigen eine klare und sehr hohe Überlegenheit der erfindungsgemäß verwendeten
Phosphatverbindung. Vor allem aus der vorletzten Tabelle ist zu ersehen, daß bei Verwendung von Verbindungen
aus den belgischen Patentschriften 637 444 und 637 445 bereits nach relativ kurzen Zeiten die
Probe Abbaufehler zeigt. Auch bei Verwendung eines entsprechenden Phosphites steigt die Länge des Zeit-'raumes,
in welchem Polypropylene verschiedener Herkunft gegenüber Oxydationseinflüssen geschützt sind,
nur unbedeutend an. Daß diese Zahlenwerte bei Verwendung von Tris-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-phosphat
einen derartig starken Anstieg zeigen, ist völlig überraschend. Das gleiche gilt für die
Extraktionsfestigkeit von erfindungsgemäß stabilisierten Polypropylenproben.
Claims (1)
- Patentanspruch:Verwendung von Tris-(3,5-di-tert.-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-phosphat in Mengen von 0,001 bis 5 Gewichtsprozent, bezogen auf die Polymerisatmenge, gegebenenfalls in Kombination mit Dilaurylthiodipropionat zum Stabilisieren von Polypropylen gegen Einwirkung von Sauerstoff.
