Franking machine for postal items The present invention relates to a machine for franking postal items, comprising several recording die carriers for recording the different numerical orders of postage values and gear wheels operating a counter (19 ) totaling successive postage values.
In crank-driven multiple digital order postage meters which include counters and have intermittent direct drive as a transfer mechanism between neighboring order digit wheels, it was disadvantageous digits are controlled simultaneously by the transfer mechanism, because the carry forward from one order to the next was frequently lost. For this reason, the counter was entirely driven by the action of the lowest numerical order.
But this process involved a very large multiplication of gears between, for example, the pound sterling registration dial and the half-penny or penny number wheel and, if a sure record was to be desired, this required a sophisticated high speed counter without avoiding exaggerated inertia effects throughout the mechanism.
When it is desired to use two independent counters driven successively by the same recording gear (under which we mean the wheel or the drum with different teeth fixed to rotate with the recording dial and connected by gear to the counter) so that these two counters serve to control each other, the difficulties increase, because only a fraction of the movement of the crank is available to control the individual counters.
The machine forming the subject of the invention is characterized by two independent counters, each comprising several number wheels having separate drive connections with the corresponding adjustable gear wheels, so as to enable the drive. simultaneous number wheels of the same counter, and a transfer mechanism allowing the actuation of these number wheels independently of the fact that they are driven simultaneously.
Preferably, one of the counters records the sum of the values while the other records the values to be deduced from a sum of value which can be set in advance.
The digit wheel corresponding to the lowest numerical order can be arranged so as to be driven before the others, an intermittent transmission in direct drive serving to transfer the necessary rotation from it to the numerical order digit wheel immediately. superior.
The transfer mechanism may include a plurality of transfer members arranged such that when a lower numerical order digit wheel completes a movement corresponding to its root, the corresponding transfer member is moved and transmits, upon movement. subsequent drive required for the immediately higher numerical digit wheel. This movement can take place automatically while the drive between the driving gear and the number wheels in question is interrupted.
The transfer member may include a star wheel controlled by a ratchet or a trigger lever controlled by a toggle lever mounted so that the assembly performs during each machine operation a reciprocating translational movement such as by moving from a first configuration, for example under the action of a finger forced to turn with the number wheel of the lowest order of the two associated wheels, this set has a second configuration in which, during movement, it can be engaged and then disengaged from a drive member of the higher-order digit wheel of the two digit wheels,
intended to transmit a unit displacement, to the latter, and is automatically returned to its first configuration by meeting a stop.
The transfer members can be mounted on separate slides for successive reciprocating movements beginning with the transfer member of the lower numerical order wheel pair so as to allow production of. a chain of transfer operations.
Two transfer members can also be mounted on the same carriage to perform a simultaneous reciprocating movement during which one of them performs, in the second configuration, the transfer of a unitary movement to a single wheel. digits when moving the carriage forward and the other performs the transfer from a single movement to a higher numeric digit wheel when moving. return of the carriage, which produces a chain of transfer operations.
In a particular embodiment, the transfer member may be a graining wheel, in particular of the star type, arranged in a constant drive ratio between the two associated number wheels, but this transfer mechanism requires two movements. elements for communicating the unitary transfer movement to those of the higher rank numbered wheels, namely:
a first movement by means of an intermittent gear such as a knuckle forced to turn with the lower rank number wheel and a second movement produced by a transfer control member, this member moving automatically each time once the control connecting the recording mechanism and the number wheels in question is interrupted. The first movement brings the transfer member into a position in which it can be engaged with the member which controls it.
For example, the transfer member may be a star wheel controlled by a stop pawl, this star wheel performing intermittent rotations by the action of a finger as in a simple mechanism to add, but it has between the teeth stop positions in which the intermittent control ceases to act and in which one of the teeth is located in the path of a rotating or reciprocating part which moves each time the kinematic chain of command serving the digit wheels in question is interrupted to produce the second displacement.
A counter with a number wheel can be provided for half pennies, one for pennies, one or two for shillings, two or three for pounds sterling and half a penny, penny, shilling and each first wheel assigned to the book can be provided with an independent control for linking with the corresponding recording gear. The mounting of these latter gears can be determined so that pennies, shillings and pounds are recorded simultaneously and half-pennies thereafter.
Between the control chain from the half-penny recorder gear to the half-penny number wheel, on the one hand, and the kinematic chain from the penny recorder gear to the corresponding number wheel , on the other hand, the transfer mechanism with conventional intermittent control by finger and star wheel may be interposed. An analogous transfer mechanism can be inserted between the chain of command connecting the register gear of the pound sterling to the first number wheel of the pounds sterling and the following number wheels corresponding to the pounds sterling.
Two counters of this type can be arranged around the register gears in such a way that each register gear first actuates one and then the other counter for a complete revolution; one counter indicates the increasing values corresponding to the printed cumulative value, while the other indicates decreasing values involving the recording of the amount of: the remainder of the prepaid sum for which this counter is previously set.
Preferably only a number wheel is used for shillings registering from 1 to 19 and transfer members can be inserted between the penny and shilling number wheels on the one hand, and on the other hand, between the shilling wheel and the first pound sterling number wheel.
In this case, as in the case of the half penny and pound sterling number wheels, a finger may be subject to turn with the penny and shilling number wheels, but instead of intermittently engaging. with a star wheel, each finger can be tined to trigger an associated transfer member which roughly takes the form of a pivoted T-lever, at the connection center of its three branches, on a sliding carriage and controlled by a spring knee brace attached near the end of a branch.
The triggering action is in this case determined so as to occur during the engagement of the finger against a second branch of the transfer member while the third branch is profiled at its end according to an arrangement such as in position triggered it can slide by the movement of the carriage on which the transfer member is mounted to engage with a star wheel and make it rotate through an angle corresponding to a tooth and thus transmit the movement to the wheel to figures of the numerical order immediately above, although this star wheel has been engaged directly by the aforementioned finger.
Provision is preferably made for a stop piece arranged in such a way that if the transfer member reaches its extreme front position during its reciprocating movement, its first branch is hooked by the stop piece and the locking member. transfer is returned to the starting position.
In this case, the reciprocating movements of each transfer member take place towards the end of each crank turn of the machine and where the transfer member has not been triggered, it performs a simple back and forth movement without do no work. A cam preferably communicates the reciprocating movement to the carriages on which the transfer members are mounted; this cam may be so arranged that the carryover or transfer between the penny and shilling number wheels occurs before the transfer between the shilling wheels and those of the pounds sterling.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the machine forming the subject of the present invention.

Fig. 5 is a partial side view showing one of the counters partially in section.
Fig. 6 is a partial plan view showing the meter, with the cover plate removed.
Fig. 7 is a partial view thereof on a larger scale showing in a fragmentary manner the operation of the transfer mechanism.
The machine shown comprises a frame 1 in which is mounted a general operating shaft 2 carrying a crank 3 at one end. Inside the frame, the shaft 2 carries four gear wheels 4 with retractable teeth, a predetermined number of which can be brought into operating position in a known manner by an annular cam mechanism 5. Each of these mechanisms is adjusted by means of a knob 6 attached to one end of a spring-loaded control rod 7, the rod being able to be pushed inwards to bring it into contact with the mechanism 5 and to rotate it by the amount desired corresponding to a currency value visible on a dial 8.
The rotation of each rod 7 causes both the adjustment of the teeth on the gear wheels 4 and the translation of a corresponding rack 9, the four crankshafts passing through the gear wheels 4 parallel to the shaft general 2 and being required to turn in concert with this tree. The racks also pass through a printing drum 10 mounted on the shaft 2 and, by meshing with a corresponding pinion 11, these racks put a stamp printing pad 12 in a position corresponding to the value indicated on the dials 8. A window at recess 13 4, the base of the frame 1 gives access to another date stamp 14, so that the latter can be adjusted.
A supply roller 15 mounted at the end of an ink reservoir tube 16, supplies ink to the aforementioned boxes. A printhead 18 is mounted above an opening 17 in the frame 1, through which the drum 10 can come into contact with envelopes or the like.
Two counters 19 are mounted in the frame 1 and oriented according to different angular arrangements around the gears 4 and the axes of the different number wheels exceed the frame 1 and carry dials 20 readable from the outside (FIG. 5). The counter shown in figs. 5 and 6 includes drive wheels 21, 22, 23 and 24 corresponding to the half penny, penny, shilling and ten shillings stages of the meter and these drive wheels mesh with the respective gear wheels 4 as we see it in fig. 1 and 2.
For the half-penny stage, gear wheel 4 will have a single retractable tooth and, suitably, drive wheel 21 has six teeth corresponding to three carryovers or transfers to the penny stage for a lap. This single tooth first engages the wheel 21 before the wheels 22, 23, 24 are driven, by a suitable arrangement of the teeth of the gears 4, so that any transfer to the penny stage is completed before wheel 22 is driven. To perform this transfer operation, a wheel 25 with three teeth, mounted on the shaft 26 of the wheel 21, meshes with a spur gear 27, mounted on the shaft 28 of the wheel 22 corresponding to a penny.
The shaft 26 carries a detent wheel 29 cooperating with a stop pawl 43 (FIG. 6).
A finger 30 mounted on the shaft 28 acts indirectly intermittently on a spur gear 31 carried by a shaft 32 controlled by the control wheel 23 of a shilling and a finger 33 mounted on the shaft 32 acts indirectly through intermittently on a spur gear 34 mounted on a shaft 35 controlled by the ten shillings wheel, in each case by means of a transfer mechanism such as that which will be described with reference to FIGS. 6 and 7.
The shaft 35 carries a finger 36 which indirectly engages intermittently with a spur gear 37 mounted on a shaft 38 corresponding to the stage of one hundred shillings and the latter shaft is provided with a finger 39 intended for a analogously, to exert its action on a wheel 40 with straight teeth mounted on a shaft 41 corresponding to the stage of one thousand shillings. Buttons 42 are intended to hold a removable locking cover plate (not shown) so that the wheel 37 can be lifted and released from the finger 36 when the payment is cashed and the dials can then be reset to zero. respondents 20.
Referring now to fig. 6, it can be seen that the finger 30 is capable of triggering a transfer member 44 with a toggle mounted on a carriage 45, the spring connecting to the toggle not being shown. Once triggered and moved one block forward by the carriage 45, the head 46 of the transfer member 44 will come into contact with the wheel 31 and cause it to rotate by one tooth, the member 44 then being brought back. in neutral position by a stop 47. Similarly, the finger 33 is able to trigger a transfer member 48 to toggle carried by a carriage 49. A stop 50 is used to return the transfer member 48 after its engagement with the wheel 34.
The carriages 45 and 49 carry transfer members for each of the counters 19 and their general arrangement emerges from FIG. 4. The reciprocating movement of the carriages is ensured by the fact that each carriage is engaged with an oscillating chette oven 51 (fig. 1 and 4) pivotally mounted and controlled by a roller 52 engaged with a cam 53 carried by the. shaft 2. A ratchet 54 and a pawl 55 mounted on the side of the cam 53 prevent retro grade rotation of the crank 3.
In order to regulate the speed of the meter shafts, the wheel 27 is placed under the action of a regulating pawl 56 and the wheel 31 under that of a pawl 57, the wheel 34 cooperating with a pawl 58, the wheel 37 with a pawl 59 and the wheel 40 with a pawl 60.
It should be noted that the cam 53 actuates the carriage 45 before the carriage 49 in order to avoid the risk of losing a transfer operation with the member 48.
Fig. 7 shows an embodiment of a transfer device with its rotary finger and its star-shaped spur gear; the rotary finger 30 forced to turn with the numbered penny wheel is about to come into contact with a branch 61 of the transfer member 44 mounted on a pivot 62 carried by the carriage 45 (not visible in FIG. 7 ).
