Definitions
- the present invention relates to a composition for forming a liquid crystal layer, a liquid crystal display device, and a method for producing a liquid crystal display device. More specifically, a liquid crystal layer forming composition for forming a polymer layer on the alignment film in order to maintain the alignment regulating force of the liquid crystal for a long time, a liquid crystal display device in which the polymer layer is formed on the alignment film, and The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display device suitable for forming a polymer layer on an alignment film.
- a liquid crystal display (LCD: Liquid Crystal Display) is a display device that controls transmission / blocking of light (display on / off) by controlling the orientation of liquid crystal molecules having birefringence.
- LCD display methods include twisted nematic (TN) mode in which liquid crystal molecules having positive dielectric anisotropy are aligned while twisting in the thickness direction of the liquid crystal layer, and negative dielectric anisotropy.
- TN twisted nematic
- VA Vertical Alignment
- IPS In-Plane-Switching
- LCDs are widely used as display devices such as televisions, personal computers, and PDAs because they are thin, light, and have low power consumption.
- the size of liquid crystal display devices has been rapidly increasing, as represented by liquid crystal display devices for television.
- a multi-domain vertical alignment mode (MVA) that can be manufactured with a high yield even in a large area and has a wide viewing angle is preferably used.
- the multi-domain vertical alignment mode is a mode in which liquid crystals having negative dielectric anisotropy are vertically aligned, and banks (linear protrusions) and electrode cutouts (slits) are provided on the substrate as alignment regulating structures. is there.
- the liquid crystal alignment azimuth at the time of voltage application can be controlled to a plurality of azimuths without applying rubbing treatment to the alignment film, and viewing angle characteristics compared to the conventional TN mode Is excellent.
- the MVA mode has a drawback that the display becomes dark.
- the main cause is that the area where the linear protrusions (ribs) or slits are formed becomes the boundary of the alignment division to generate dark lines, and the transmittance at the time of white display becomes low and the display looks dark.
- the rib arrangement interval may be sufficiently widened.
- the number of ribs that are alignment regulating structures is reduced, it takes time to stabilize the alignment even when a predetermined voltage is applied to the liquid crystal. This causes a problem that the response speed becomes slow.
- a liquid crystal composition in which polymerizable components such as monomers and oligomers are mixed with liquid crystal is sealed between substrates, and a polymerizable component is polymerized in a state where liquid crystal molecules are inclined by applying a voltage between the substrates. Polymerize. Thereby, even if the voltage application is removed, the liquid crystal has a predetermined pretilt angle, and the liquid crystal alignment azimuth can be defined. Polymerization of the polymerizable component is performed by irradiation with heat or light (ultraviolet rays). By using the PSA technique, a rib is not required and the aperture ratio is improved. At the same time, a pretilt angle smaller than 90 ° is given over the entire display area, and high-speed response is possible.
- the polymer wall here is a structure formed so as to surround the liquid crystal layer, and is essentially different from the PSA layer formed as a thin layer on the alignment film.
- the pretilt angle providing technique using the PSA layer has some problems related to display unevenness when an image is displayed on a completed LCD.
- display unevenness occurs in the image display of the completed LCD due to a liquid crystal alignment abnormality locally generated when a voltage is applied during monomer polymerization to change the tilt of liquid crystal molecules.
- the degree of unevenness of display varies depending on the monomers used, and not all monomers that are soluble in the liquid crystal material are suitable for forming the PSA layer.
- a composition containing a monomer used for forming a PSA layer is injected into a cell and a voltage is applied. It has been reported that vertical alignment characteristics can be imparted to the PSA layer by performing light irradiation and polymerizing the monomer by prolonged ultraviolet light irradiation. In this case, display unevenness is improved as compared with the case where a polymerization initiator is used, and better display quality is easily obtained. However, on the other hand, a decrease in productivity due to a longer processing time (tact time) becomes a new problem.
- the present invention has been made in view of the above situation, and an object of the present invention is to provide a composition for forming a liquid crystal layer that enables both shortening of processing time and obtaining good display quality. It is.
- the inventors of the present invention have examined various causes of image sticking in a liquid crystal display, and in the case of a polymerization initiator that undergoes self-cleavage by light irradiation, such as Irgacure 651 in the previous reported examples, the charge is caused by the self-cleavage. Since impurities that tend to take up remain in the liquid crystal layer, a DC offset voltage is generated inside the cell, and even when a voltage is applied, the alignment state of the liquid crystal changes, and as a result, burn-in occurs. It was.
- benzophenone, acetophenone, etc. are added to the liquid crystal material as the material of the PSA layer, and the ketyl radical is removed by hydrogen abstraction reaction by light irradiation.
- the method of generating was effective. Since benzophenone and acetophenone generate ketyl radicals by extracting hydrogen from coexisting compounds, etc., impurities derived from the polymerization initiator generated by the polymerization initiator due to self-cleavage are not generated in the liquid crystal and display unevenness
- the tact time can be shortened while suppressing deterioration of display quality such as burn-in.
- one aspect of the present invention is a liquid crystal layer forming composition containing a liquid crystal material and a monomer, wherein the monomer is a compound having a structure that generates a ketyl radical by a hydrogen abstraction reaction by light irradiation. It is a composition for layer formation.
- the ketyl radical shown here is a radical generated when a carbonyl compound abstracts hydrogen from a hydrogen atom donor by photoexcitation.
- Examples of the compound that generates the ketyl radical include compounds having a benzophenone structure, a fluorenone structure, a thioxanthone structure, a benzyl structure, or an acetophenone structure in the molecule.
- the structural member (for example, alignment film and liquid crystal layer) of a liquid crystal display device deteriorates by the ultraviolet irradiation of a short wavelength component
- the present inventors have said ketyl radical.
- the benzophenone structure absorbs light of 350 nm or more
- the fluorenone structure, the thioxanthone structure and the benzyl structure absorb light of 400 nm or more, and can be polymerized even by light irradiation of a long wavelength component. It has been found that irradiation with a short wavelength component is not required and deterioration can be prevented.
- the benzyl structure has a hydrogen abstraction reaction that preferentially proceeds to generate a ketyl radical by light irradiation under conditions where a hydrogen atom donor is present.
- a hydrogen abstraction reaction that preferentially proceeds to generate a ketyl radical by light irradiation under conditions where a hydrogen atom donor is present.
- it does not exist, it is widely known that it has a property of generating a radical by photocleavage (for example, see Non-Patent Document 1).
- Examples of the hydrogen atom donor include ethers, amines, thiols or alcohols having an alkyl group, an alkenyl group or an aralkyl group.
- the composition for forming a liquid crystal layer of the present invention contains a monomer that generates a ketyl radical and undergoes a polymerization reaction when irradiated with light, it can be polymerized in a short time without the need to add a new polymerization initiator.
- the reaction proceeds and impurities derived from the polymerization initiator are not generated. Therefore, it is possible to manufacture a liquid crystal display device in which a residual DC voltage is hardly generated in the liquid crystal layer and display quality deterioration such as image sticking and display unevenness is small. Further, since light irradiation for a short time is sufficient, deterioration of components due to light irradiation for a long time can be prevented, and the reliability of the liquid crystal display device can be improved.
