Det er beskrevet komposittmaterialer med porøsiteter over 60$ og tettheter under 0,6 g/cm' i form av en matte Inneholdende en ærogel og deri fordelte fibrer, hvor komposittmaterialet er kjennetegnet ved at aerogelen oppilser riss og de av rissene innesluttede aerogelbruddstykkene, hvis midlere volum utgjør 0,001 mm' til 1 cm'holdes sammen ved hjelp av fibrer. Foreliggende oppfinnelse vedrører videre fremgangsmåter for fremstilling av komposittmaterialene ifølge oppfinnelsen samt deres anvendelse.
