Abstract

La invención se refiere a un método completo particularmente económico, para producir mentol, especialmente para la producción de L-mentol ópticamente activo, esencialmente enantiomérica y diaesterereométicamente puro y mentol racémico partiendo del citral de material madre no cotoso, comercialmente accesible. El método comprende los siguientes pasos: a.1) hidrogenación catalítica de neral y/o geranial para dar citronelal, b.1) ciclización de citronelal para dar isopulegol en presencia de un catalizador de ácido, c.1) purificación de isopulegol por cristalización y d.1) hidrogenación catalítica de isopulegol para dar mentol.
