Abstract

Description
전원은 다양한 타입의 디바이스들에 사용된다. 다양한 장점들 및 단점들을 갖는 많은 특수한 타입의 전원 회로들이 있다. 컴퓨터들에 있는 마이크로프로세서들은 고레벨의 효율을 유지하면서 고레벨의 전류를 조정하는 전원 회로를 필요로 한다.
하나의 이러한 타입의 특수 전원 회로는 스위칭 조정기(switching regulator)이다. 전형적으로 스위칭 조정기들은 조정되지 않은 공급으로부터 흘러들어온 전류보다 더 높은 전류를 갖는 출력을 공급하는 동시에, 조정되지 않은 입력보다 더 낮은 전압을 갖는 출력을 공급한다. 이것은 포화 모드와 비도통 모드 사이에 일정하게 스위칭하는 수동 트랜지스터(positive transistor)에 의해 이루어진다. 상기 수동 트랜지스터는 포화 또는 비도통 상태에 놓이기 때문에, 전력 소실(power dissipation)이 매우 낮다. 따라서, 스위칭 조정기는 고효율로 많은 양의 전류를 조정할 수 있다.

많은 마이크로프로세서들은 저전력 동작 모드에서 선택적으로 동작하도록 구성된다. 저전력 모드 동안, 마이크로프로세서는 어떤 기능 블럭들(예를 들어, 비활성 상태인 것들)에 전력을 공급하지 않도록 하고(하거나) 그것의 내부 클럭(들)의 주파수를 줄이도록 구성된다. 상기 마이크로프로세서의 어떤 부분들에 전력을 공급하지 않고(않거나) 클럭 주파수들을 줄임으로써 전력 소비를 쉽게 줄일 수 있는 잇점이 있다. 상기 마이크로프로세서가 정규 동작 모드로 돌아갈 때, 상기 마이크로프로세서는 비교적 많은 양의 전류를 흐르게 한다.

도 5 는 다중위상 전원(500)의 또다른 실시예를 예시한다. 도 5 의 다중위상 전원(500)은 트랜지스터(102, 112, 122 및 132)가 빠졌다는 점에서 도 1 의 다중위상 전원(100)과 차이가 있다. 따라서, 도 5 의 스위칭 조정기들(예를 들어, 510a, 510b, 510c 및 510d)은 동기 조정기들이 아니다. 각 스위칭 조정기(510)의 각각의 다이오드, 즉, 다이오드(503, 513, 523 또는 533)는 관련된 트랜지스터, 즉, 트랜지스터(501, 511, 521 또는 531)가 동작되지 않을 때, 전류가 흐르도록 귀환 경로를 제공한다.
다중위상 전원의 다양한 실시예들은 정규 동작 모드 동안 비교적 높은 전류 출력을 제공하면서, 저전력 동작 모드 동안 손실을 최소화하는 잇점이 있다. 저전력 동작 모드 동안 서브세트의 스위칭 조정기들의 동작을 일시 중지시킴으로써, 일시 중지된 스위칭 조정기들의 트랜지스터들과 관련된 용량성 스위칭 손실들이 제거될 수 있다. 따라서, 전원의 전체 효율이 향상될 수 있다.
상기 설명된 실시예들에서 전체 4개의 스위칭 조정기들이 각각의 전원들에 도시되어 있지만, 다른 개수들의 스위칭 조정기들이 제공될 수 있는 또다른 실시예들이 가능하다. 마찬가지로, 상기 설명된 실시예들에서 저전력 동작 모드 동안 스위칭 조정기들 중 하나를 제외한 모든 것의 동작이 일시 중지되지만, 임의의 수의 스위칭 조정기들이 일시 중지되는 또다른 실시예들이 가능하다.
상기 설명의 완전한 이해하에서 본 실시예들에 대한 다수의 변형들과 수정들이 본 기술분야의 당업자들에게 명백하게 될 것이다. 하기의 청구항들은 이러한 모든 변형들과 수정들을 포괄하여 해설되어야 할 것이다.

Claims (10)
- 제 1 스위칭 조정기 회로(110a)와;제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로(110b)와;상기 제 1 스위칭 조정기 회로와 상기 제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로에 연결된 위상 제어 회로(150)를 포함하며, 여기서 상기 위상 제어 회로는 상기 제 1 및 제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로들의 스위칭을 제어하기 위한 다수의 스위칭 제어 신호들을 발생시키기 위해 구성된 전원에 있어서,상기 위상 제어 회로는 저전력 동작 모드를 나타내는 신호의 수신에 응답하여 상기 제 2 스위칭 조정기의 동작을 선택적으로 일시 중지시키도록 구성된 것을 특징으로 하는 전원.
- 제 1 스위칭 조정기 회로(110a)와;제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로(110b)와;제 3 스위칭 조정기 회로(110c)와;제 4 스위칭 조정기 회로(110d)와;상기 제 1 스위칭 조정기 회로, 상기 제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로, 상기 제 3 스위칭 조정기 회로 및 상기 제 4 스위칭 조정기 회로에 연결된 위상 제어 회로(150)를 포함하며, 여기서 상기 위상 제어 회로는 상기 제 1, 제 2, 제 3 및 제 4 스위칭 조정기 회로들의 스위칭을 제어하기 위한 다수의 스위칭 제어 신호들을 발생시키도록 구성된 전원에 있어서,상기 위상 제어 회로는 저전력 동작 모드을 나타내는 신호의 수신에 응답하여 상기 제 2, 제 3 및 제 4 스위칭 조정기 회로들의 동작을 선택적으로 일시 중지시키도록 구성된 것을 특징으로 하는 전원.
- 제 1 항 또는 제 2 항에 있어서,상기 위상 제어 회로(150)는 상기 제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로에 대한 상기 다수의 제어 신호들 중 적어도 하나를 디스에이블링함으로써 상기 저전력 동작 모드 동안 선택적으로 상기 제 2 스위칭 조정기(110b) 회로의 동작을 일시 중지시키는 것을 특징으로 하는 전원.
- 전술한 항들 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,상기 제 1 및 제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로들 각각은 제 1 트랜지스터(101, 111) 및 제 2 트랜지스터(102, 112)를 포함하고, 상기 위상 제어 회로는 선택적으로 상기 제어 신호로 상기 제 1 및 제 2 트랜지스터를 활성화 및 비활성화시키는 것을 특징으로 하는 전원.
- 전술한 항들 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,상기 위상 제어 회로(150)는 상기 제 1 및 제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로들이 서로에 대해 위상이 다르도록 선택적으로 상기 제 1 및 제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로들을활성화 및 비활성화시키는 것을 특징으로 하는 전원.
- 전술한 항들 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,상기 제 1 및 제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로들 각각은활성화된 상기 제 1 트랜지스터에 응답하여 상기 제 1 트랜지스터로부터 전하를 받도록 연결된 캐패시터(105, 115)와; 그리고비활성화된 상기 제 1 트랜지스터에 응답하여 상기 캐패시터에 전류를 공급하도록 상기 캐패시터에 연결된 인덕터(104, 114)를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 전원.
- 제 1 항 또는 제 2 항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,상기 제 1 및 제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로들(510a, 510b) 각각은 제 1 트랜지스터(501, 511)를 포함하고, 상기 위상 제어 회로는 선택적으로 상기 제 1 트랜지스터를 활성화 및 비활성화시키는 것을 특징으로 하는 전원.
- 제 7 항에 있어서,상기 위상 제어 회로(150)는 상기 제 1 및 제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로들이 서로에 대해 위상이 다르도록 선택적으로 상기 제 1 및 제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로들(510a, 510b)을 활성화 및 비활성화시키는 것을 특징으로 하는 전원.
- 제 8 항에 있어서,상기 제 1 및 상기 제 2 스위칭 조정기 회로들은활성화된 상기 제 1 트랜지스터에 응답하여 상기 제 1 트랜지스터로부터 전하를 받도록 연결된 캐패시터와; 그리고비활성화된 상기 제 1 트랜지스터에 응답하여 상기 캐패시터로 전류를 공급하도록 상기 캐패시터에 연결된 인덕터를 더 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 전원.
- 마이크로프로세서와;상기 마이크로프로세서에 연결된 제 1 - 9 항들 중 어느 한 항에 따른 전원을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 컴퓨터 시스템.
