(57)【要約】 【課題】 ポータブル・カメラ自体のサイズ、重量およ
びメモリ容量を大きくすることなく、該カメラが撮像し
た画像データを記憶する記憶部の記憶容量を実質的に増
大させること。 【解決手段】 画像転送システム１０は、デジタル形式
で画像を撮像し、その画像を画像メモリ２４に保持する
画像撮像装置（デジタルスチルカメラ）２０と、セルラ
ー電話送信機２８と、ＣＰＵ２２とを実装している。Ｃ
ＰＵ２２は画像メモリ２４を制御して画像データを出力
させ、またセルラー電話送信機２８を制御して画像メモ
リ２４から受信したデータをセルラー電話送信機２８に
送信させる。サーバ（受信）局１４はセルラー電話ネッ
トワーク１６により遠隔局１２のセルラー電話送信機２
８に接続され、画像データを受信し、その画像を画像記
憶装置５８に記憶する。

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【発明の属する技術分野】本発明は、デジタルスチルビ
デオカメラ（ＤＳＶＣ）の分野に関し、デジタルスチル
ビデオカメラからネットワーク・コンピュータへのワイ
ヤレス画像転送を行うポータブル画像転送システムに関
するものである。特に、本発明に係るポータブル画像転
送システムでは、ＤＳＶＣで生成された画像の記憶に関
して改良が加えられている。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】ポータブルＤＳＶＣはカメラ自体が小さ
く軽いので、いろいろな場所で写真を撮るのに便利であ
る。ただ不都合なことは、ユーザが消費者向け電子機器
に軽くて小型のものを期待するあまり、ＤＳＶＣで記憶
可能な画像枚数が限られる傾向にあることである。この
問題に対する解決策の一つは増設用メモリ・モジュール
を追加することである。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】しかしながら、この解
決策はメモリ・モジュールをＤＳＶＣの携帯性を損なわ
ないように小型化しなければならず、費用がかかるもの
である。必要なのは、その中の画像メモリが高価過ぎ
ず、またポータブル・カメラのサイズ、重量に不必要に
影響を与えない、大きな画像記憶容量をもったＤＳＶＣ
である。
【０００４】本発明は、かかる課題を解決するためにな
されたもので、ポータブル・カメラ自体のサイズ、重量
およびメモリ容量を大きくすることなく、該ポータブル
・カメラが撮像した画像データを記憶する記憶部の記憶
容量を実質的に増大させることができるポータブル画像
転送システムを提供することを目的とする。

【課題を解決するための手段】上記の目的を達成するた
めに、請求項１に係るポータブル画像転送システムは、
デジタル形式で画像を撮像し、該画像をカメラ・メモリ
に格納するデジタルスチルカメラと、セルラー電話送信
機と、前記カメラ・メモリとセルラー電話送信機に接続
され、前記カメラ・メモリを制御して画像を表わすデー
タを出力させ、前記セルラー電話送信機を制御してセル
ラー電話機にカメラ・メモリから出力したデータを送信
させる中央処理装置（ＣＰＵ）と、セルラー・ネットワ
ークにより前記セルラー電話送信機に接続され、画像デ
ータを受信するための受信局と、画像が一旦受信局に送
信されると、つぎの画像のために再度使用されるように
カメラ・メモリをリセットする手段と、前記受信局に接
続され、前記受信局で受信された画像を記憶するための
画像記憶装置と、を有するものである。

ムは、前記ＣＰＵが既存のデジタルスチルカメラのカメ
ラ・メモリとインターフェイスをとっているものであ
る。

と、セルラー・モデムと、を有するものである。

れる前に電子メール・メッセージとして画像をパッケー
ジするための手段を有しているものである。

コマンドに応じて画像の選択部分をサンプリングするた
めの手段を有しているものである。

テムは、さらに、前記受信局によって処理された画像を
プリントするための遠隔プリント装置を有しているもの
である。
【００１６】請求項１２に係るポータブル画像転送シス
テムは、前記遠隔プリント装置がファクシミリ装置と、
デジタル複写機と、プリンタのうちの一つである。
【００１７】すなわち、本発明は、改良型ポータブル画
像転送システムである。一つの実施例によると、中央処
理装置（ＣＰＵ）と，モデムと、セルラー電話送信機と
はＤＳＶＣの画像メモリに接続されている。このＣＰＵ
はディスプレイとコマンド入力部にも接続されており、
このコマンド入力部は音声によるものであっても、ディ
スプレイ一体型のタッチ式画面であってもよい。このＣ
ＰＵは画像をセルラー電話送信機を介してサーバ局にダ
ウンロードするためのプログラムを、必要に応じて、使
用可能な接続方法に最適なプロトコルに従って実行す
る。
【００１８】接続がダイレクト・セルラー電話回線であ
る場合は、データはセルラー電話送信機を介してセルラ
ー電話ネットワークに送られ、サーバ局ではモデムによ
ってそのデータを受信する。サーバ局のＣＰＵは、画像
記憶装置、代表的なものではハードディスクのような廉
価で大容量の装置に記憶させるべきファイルを記憶す
る。
【００１９】本発明の変形例においては、サーバ局が受
信した画像について種々の分析を行なって、サーバ局が
分析に必要だと判断する追加画像をＤＳＶＣが得るよう
に指示を出力する。
【００２０】この分析には画像解像度の向上、立体映像
マッチング、フォトコピーなど、また被写体に対するカ
メラ・アングルの判定や画像圧縮が含まれる。特殊な実
施例の場合、サーバ局は画像を見たり自局のファクシミ
リ装置やデジタルカメラへ転送したりするために遠隔局
に対して画像を返送する。

【発明の実施の形態】以下、この発明に係るポータブル
画像転送システムの実施の形態について、図面を参照し
て詳細に説明する。
【００２３】図１は、画像転送システム１０が、セルラ
ー電話ネットワーク１６を介してサーバ局１４に接続さ
れた遠隔局１２と共に示されている。遠隔局１２は画像
撮像装置２０と画像メモリ２４で構成されたデジタルカ
メラを含んでいる。画像メモリ２４は画像撮像装置２０
により取り込まれた、少ない量の画像を保持するために
構成されたメモリである。
【００２４】いくつかの実施の形態においては、画像撮
像装置２０と画像メモリ２４が、株式会社リコー製のＲ
ｉｃｏｈＲＤＣ−１スチルビデオカメラのような、従来
のデジタルスチルビデオカメラ（ＤＳＶＣ）により提供
されている。既製のＤＳＶＣが使われているか、あるい
はそのカメラが一体化されたものであるかには関係な
く、ＣＰＵ２２は画像メモリ２４と、モデム２６と、セ
ルラー電話送信機２８とに接続されている。
【００２５】上記の各種構成要素間の接続は、ＣＰＵ２
２が画像メモリ２４を制御することにより、画像を表わ
すデータを画像メモリ２４から、画像データを電話回線
による送信に適した信号に変換するためのモデム２６へ
転送することができるように行われる。モデム２６の接
続によって、その信号は、信号をセルラー電話ネットワ
ーク１６を介してサーバ局１４のモデム５６へ送信する
ためのセルラー電話送信機２８に供給される。

遠隔局１２のユーザと対話を行ないまたコマンドの受け
付けをするためのコマンド入力部３２とを含んでいる。
ＣＰＵ２２が実行する各プログラムは、ユーザがコマン
ド入力部３２を用いて入力したコマンドに応答するコー
ドＥＰＲＯＭ３４に記憶されている。
【００２７】コマンド入力部３２は音声による入力装置
であっても、ディスプレイ３０と一体型のタッチ式画面
であってもよい。コードＥＰＲＯＭ３４は、プロトコル
・パケッティング・プログラム３６や、暗号化モジュー
ル３８や、電子メール・ハンドラ４０のような送信する
前に画像上にある種の処理を行なうために必要とされる
コードを有している。
【００２８】図１に示した、サーバ局１４はモデム５６
を含み、このモデム５６は自局のコードＥＰＲＯＭ５４
に保存されたコードを実行するＣＰＵ５２によって制御
されている。コードＥＰＲＯＭ５４に保存された各プロ
グラムは、ＣＰＵ５２がモデム５６で受信したデータを
画像記憶装置５８に転送するための指令であり、一方、
受信した画像を、画像送信に使われるプロトコルの要件
に対応するよう処理するための指令でもある。
【００２９】つぎに、動作について説明する。画像転送
システムの一動作例において、ＣＰＵ２２が、以下の各
指令のためのプログラムを実行することにより、画像メ
モリ２４から定期的に画像が読み出され、読み出された
画像にはマーク付けがなされて、画像メモリ２４はつぎ
に入力される画像によってオーバーライトすることが可
能となる。
【００３０】各画像が画像メモリ２４より読み出される
と、その画像データは暗号化され、電子メール・メッセ
ージとしてフォーマット化される。セルラー電話ネット
ワーク１６が直接のモデム・リンクではなく、ＴＣＰ／
ＩＰを使ったＳＬＩＰ／ＰＰＰ接続である場合には、送
信用画像上で追加的なプロトコル・パッケージングが行
なわれる。
【００３１】サーバ局１４で画像が受信されると、各画
像は復号され、復元されて、画像記憶装置５８に格納さ
れる。必要な場合、画像記憶装置５８の画像は一部分ま
たはその全てをインターネットを介して入手することが
できる。ＴＣＰ／ＩＰ接続が用いられている場合には、
遠隔局１２のＣＰＵ２２はコードＥＰＲＯＭ３４に記憶
されたルーチンを実行して、画像を送る前に送信先の
“接続性”を知らせる（ｐｉｎｇ ｐｒｏｃｅｓｓ：ピ
ン処理）ようにしてもよい。
【００３２】このピン処理はダミー・メッセージをチャ
ネルを通して送信し、それによってその送信先、例え
ば、サーバ局１４がデータ受信に対して接続可能か、準
備はできているかなどを判断する。そのピン処理（ダミ
ー・メッセージ）に対して遠隔局１２がイエスの回答を
受け取ったならば、その場合においてのみＣＰＵ２２は
画像パッケージを送信するようにする。
【００３３】位置情報を各画像とともに含ませるべき場
合には、ＧＰＳ（Ｇｌｏｂａｌ Ｐｏｓｉｔｉｏｎｉｎ
ｇ Ｓｙｓｔｅｍ）受信機６０、例えば、カリフォルニ
アのＴｒｉｍｂｌｅ Ｎａｖｉｇａｔｉｏｎ ｏｆ Ｓ
ｕｎｎｙｖａｌｅ社製のＰＣＭＣＩＡ対応のＧＰＳ受信
機をＣＰＵ２２に接続することができる。
【００３４】本発明の利用法は色々考えられるが、その
いくつかについてここでは述べることにし、その他につ
いてはこの開示を読むことによって明らかになる。
【００３５】その利用法の一つは休暇中に撮った写真の
コレクションである。遠隔局１２は非常に手軽に持ち運
びできるので、休暇に出かける人がその遠隔局１２をバ
ッグに入れて旅行に持っていくのに便利である。画像を
撮りたい時には、旅行者はコマンド入力部３２を使って
遠隔局１２を動作させ、画像を撮り、もし画像メモリ２
４がフルの場合には、画像をサーバ局１４に転送する。
この機能によって旅行者はフィルムや画像メモリ容量の
不足（残量）を気にすることなく、また旅行中に撮る画
像をすべて保持できるだけの充分なメモリを持ち歩く必
要もなく、撮りたいだけ何枚でも写真を撮ることができ
る。
【００３６】他の応用例としてはテレビのレポート用で
ある。現場のレポータはこの遠隔局１２を使ってニュー
ス事件の現場で映像を撮り、それらの映像をテレビ局が
制御するサーバ局１４に送信することができるので、ニ
ュース用のバンに積まれた現在必要とされる高価で重量
のある機器を必要とせず、次々と撮りたてのニュース写
真を送ることが可能となる。
【００３７】つぎに、代表的な動作例では、ディスプレ
イ３０は画像メモリ２４の残り空き容量を示す。ユーザ
が画像メモリ２４にすでに記憶させている画像をサーバ
局１４に対して送信することによって増設メモリを空に
しようと決めた場合、ユーザーはコマンド入力部３２を
使ってコマンド・シーケンスを開始する。
【００３８】これによって、サーバ局１４のセルラー番
号をダイアルしたり、また、その他にも遠隔局１２とサ
ーバ局１４との間のリンクをセットアップしたりすると
いうＣＰＵ２２の処理が開始される。その結果、ＣＰＵ
２２はプロトコルや、暗号化や、メール送信手順用に必
要に応じて画像をパッケージし、必要に応じてそのパッ
ケージを制御し、送信時には画像メモリ２４内の画像に
フラグをたてる。
【００３９】送信時において、画像にラベル付けをする
方法としては、画像に利用される画像メモリ２４の各ブ
ロック毎にバイナリ・フラグを加えることである。画像
は画像撮像装置２０で撮像されるので、フラグの設定は
そのブロックが使用中であることを示す。画像はＣＰＵ
２２によって送信されるので、フラグのリセットはその
ブロックが画像メモリとして再び使用可能であることを
示す。
【００４０】本発明が使われる応用例の一つは野外での
立体画像の撮像である。野外での立体画像撮像の場合、
カメラは現場で画像を撮像し、サーバはそれらの画像を
処理する。高品質の立体構造を現像する場合の一つの問
題は、場面の状況が急速に変わる画像領域における正確
さ、すなわち、シャープなエッジである。
【００４１】この精度を高くする必要性は、そのために
必要とされる画像をより多く取り込むことにより対応す
ることができる。あいにく従来の技術にあっては、撮影
者はもっと画像が必要かどうかを調べるために現場から
画像処理へ戻らなければならないとか、またしばしば二
度も現場へ足を運ばなければならなかったり、あるい
は、現場へ画像処理用コンピュータを持っていく必要が
あった。本発明によれば、画像を撮像し、サーバに送
り、追加画像が必要かどうかをサーバと対話しながら処
理を行なうことができる。
【００４２】したがって、サーバは撮像された画像を処
理して、いい立体画像が作られているかどうかを判断す
る。この立体画像に部分的であれ受け入れがたいところ
があれば、サーバはデジタルスチルビデオカメラを介し
て撮影者に信号を送り、追加の画像を取り込む。
【００４３】顔の認識は同様の例である。画像撮像装置
とサーバは、顔認識を改善するためにサーバが追加の画
像撮像を要請することにより、協力して双方向での立体
マッチングを行なう。この方法によって、立体写真をラ
ボラトリに保存しておくという必要性は無くなる。
【００４４】本発明の他の使用法としては、コピーした
いものをフォトコピー機まで簡単に持っていけないよう
な、例えば、図書館などのいろいろな場所でフォトコピ
ーを簡単に得られることである。フォトコピー機の解像
度では、１ページ分の非圧縮画像は約１５メガビット
（１ｂｉｔ／ｐｉｘｅｌ×４００ｄｐｉｘ×８．５11×
１１11＝１４９６ｍｂｉｔ）のメモリを必要とする。メ
モリの必要性を減らすために、画像はＤＳＶＣで圧縮す
ることができるが、この圧縮にはＤＳＶＣでかなりの計
算用電力が必要となる。
【００４５】本発明によれば、低解像度の画像（例え
ば、１００ｄｐｉ）を撮像して、サーバ局に送ることが
できる。そして、サーバ局はこの低解像度の画像を分析
し、白黒領域およびその領域の境界を全て識別する。高
解像度の画像へ変換するために、サーバは低解像度の各
画素を１６高解像度画素で示す。画像が全て黒または全
て白である場合は、各高解像度画素は正確に色付けされ
るが、エッジ近くにある１６高解像度画素の各ブロック
は全てが一色になるとは限らない。これらの領域を正確
にするために、サーバ局は画像撮像指令をＤＳＶＣに送
り、ＤＳＶＣはそれによってエッジ領域から追加情報を
取り込む。
【００４６】サーバ局で所望の高解像度による画像がつ
くられると、通常はＤＳＶＣのユーザの近くにあるプリ
ンタまたはファクシミリ装置などの機器にその画像を送
ることができる。そうすると、フォトコピーを望んでい
るユーザーはコマンド入力部３２を使って、近くのファ
クシミリ装置の電話番号を指示することができる。
【００４７】ＤＳＶＣは、ハードコピーを望んでいるそ
のぺージの低解像度画像を得ると、それをサーバ局１４
に送る。そこでサーバ局１４は追加情報を必要とする画
像領域を判定する。サーバ局１４は画像上のこれらの領
域をＤＳＶＣ側に知らせ、ＤＳＶＣは画像のうちの必要
な各領域を再度取り込む。高解像度画像に必要な解像度
のアップはＤＳＶＣ上の高解像度レンズを使うことによ
り、あるいは、低解像度の画像を多数取り込み平均化す
ることにより得ることができる。
【００４８】その結果得られた画像は、プリンタがファ
クシミリ装置であれば、サーバ局１４によって圧縮され
るので、サーバ局１４は圧縮されたファクシミリ・ファ
イルを送信するだけでよい。それ以外の場合は、サーバ
局１４は遠隔局１２へ圧縮されたファイルを再度送信す
ることができ、遠隔局１２はセルラー電話ネットワーク
１６を介して直接ファクシミリ装置にダイアルをする。
【００４９】図１には、ファクシミリ装置や、プリンタ
や、あるいはデジタル複写機などの外部プリント装置７
０に接続されたＣＰＵ５２が示されている。他のバリエ
ーションとしては、特に外部プリント装置７０がファク
シミリ装置である場合には、セルラー電話ネットワーク
１６に接続された外部プリント装置７０が含まれる。
【００５０】外部プリント装置７０はまた遠隔局１２に
直接接続されていてもよい。遠隔局１２のサイズや重量
にそれ程厳しい制約がない場合は、プリンタを遠隔局１
２に実装してもよい。もし希望があれば、遠隔局１２は
撮像した画像をディスプレイ３０上に表示したり、ある
いは画像撮像装置２０のビューファインダーに表示する
ように構成することが可能である。
【００５１】さらに他の応用例としては立体画像マッチ
ングがある。地質学者が遠隔局を持って遠隔地に出か
け、地形の３次元（３Ｄ）画像を撮りたいと思っている
場合を想定してる。立体画像とは一つの景色をすこしず
らして撮った二つの画像によって形成されたものであ
る。多くの立体画像システムでは、二つの画像に対する
カメラの正確な相対位置が要求される。しかしながら、
現在では、位置合わせ用の情報なしで立体画法“マッチ
ング（３Ｄ効果を創出するための二つの画像の位置合わ
せ）”を行なうことが可能である。
【００５２】そのようなシステムの一つとしてスコット
ランドのＴｕｒｉｎｇ Ｉｎｓｔｉｔｕｔｅ ｏｆ Ｇ
ｌａｓｇｏｗから売り出されているＣ３Ｄ技術がある。
本発明とそのシステムを組み合わせることにより、地質
学者は二つの画像をアップロードし、サーバ局のＣ３Ｄ
システムにその画像を直ちに判定させ、３Ｄ画像がつく
られたかどうかを判断することができる。
【００５３】もしつくられていないような場合は、サー
バ局はその地質学者にカメラ位置を再度確認し、画像を
もう一度撮るようにメッセージが送られるので、画像を
撮るのに現場へ二度足を運ぶことを回避することができ
る。
【００５４】上記の開示は、本発明の説明のためのもの
であって、本発明を限定するためのものではない。本発
明の様々なバリエーションは、この開示を検討すれば当
業者には自明となる。
【００５５】例えば、サーバ局１４は、遠隔局１２のよ
うに携帯用である必要がないならば、固定システムでも
セミポータブル・システムでもよい。また、遠隔局１２
がサーバ局１４からセルラー電話ネットワークシステム
１６を介してメッセージを受信できる場合には、サーバ
局１４から制御を行なってもよい。
【００５６】したがって、本発明の範囲は上記の説明を
参照することのみによって判断されるべきではなく、上
記特許請求の範囲、およびそれと均等のものの全範囲を
参照して判断されるべきである。

【発明の効果】以上説明したとおり、本発明に係るポー
タブル画像転送システムにあっては、ポータブル・カメ
ラ自体のサイズ、重量およびメモリ容量を大きくするこ
となく、該ポータブル・カメラが撮像する画像データの
記憶容量を増大させることができる。

Claims (12)

    【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 デジタル形式で画像を撮像し、該画像を
    カメラ・メモリに格納するデジタルスチルカメラと、 セルラー電話送信機と、 前記カメラ・メモリとセルラー電話送信機に接続され、
    前記カメラ・メモリを制御して画像を表わすデータを出
    力させ、前記セルラー電話送信機を制御してセルラー電
    話機にカメラ・メモリから出力したデータを送信させる
    中央処理装置（ＣＰＵ）と、 セルラー・ネットワークにより前記セルラー電話送信機
    に接続され、画像データを受信するための受信局と、 画像が一旦受信局に送信されると、つぎの画像のために
    再度使用されるようにカメラ・メモリをリセットする手
    段と、 前記受信局に接続され、前記受信局で受信された画像を
    記憶するための画像記憶装置と、 を有することを特徴とするポータブル画像転送システ
    ム。
  2. 【請求項２】 前記ＣＰＵが既存のデジタルスチルカメ
    ラのカメラ・メモリとインターフェイスをとっているこ
    とを特徴とする請求項１に記載のポータブル画像転送シ
    ステム。
  3. 【請求項３】 前記セルラー電話送信機が、 標準セルラー電話機と、 セルラー・モデムと、 を有することを特徴とする請求項１に記載のポータブル
    画像転送システム。
  4. 【請求項４】 さらに、前記セルラー電話送信機によっ
    て送信される前に電子メール・メッセージとして画像を
    パッケージするための手段を有していることを特徴とす
    る請求項１に記載のポータブル画像転送システム。
  5. 【請求項５】 さらに、前記セルラー電話送信機と前記
    受信局との間のシリアル回線インターフェイス・プロト
    コル接続を操作するための手段を有していることを特徴
    とする請求項１に記載のポータブル画像転送システム。
  6. 【請求項６】 さらに、前記セルラー電話送信機によっ
    て送信される前に画像データを暗号化するための手段を
    有していることを特徴とする請求項１に記載のポータブ
    ル画像転送システム。
  7. 【請求項７】 さらに、前記デジタルスチルカメラに定
    期的に画像を撮像させるための手段を有しており、前記
    ＣＰＵは画像を定期的に送信するようにプログラムさ
    れ、それにより、つぎの画像を受け入れるために前記カ
    メラ・メモリが空にされることを特徴とする請求項１に
    記載のポータブル画像転送システム。
  8. 【請求項８】 さらに、前記ポータブル画像転送システ
    ムの位置を判断するための手段と、各画像とともに位置
    表示を加えるための手段とを有していることを特徴とす
    る請求項１に記載のポータブル画像転送システム。
  9. 【請求項９】 さらに、コマンドを前記受信局から遠隔
    局の前記ＣＰＵに送るためのリターン・リンクを有して
    いることを特徴とする請求項１に記載のポータブル画像
    転送システム。
  10. 【請求項１０】 前記遠隔局がさらに、前記受信局から
    送られるコマンドに応じて画像の選択部分をサンプリン
    グするための手段を有していることを特徴とする請求項
    ９に記載のポータブル画像転送システム。
  11. 【請求項１１】 さらに、前記受信局によって処理され
    た画像をプリントするための遠隔プリント装置を有して
    いることを特徴とする請求項１に記載のポータブル画像
    転送システム。
  12. 【請求項１２】 前記遠隔プリント装置がファクシミリ
    装置と、デジタル複写機と、プリンタのうちの一つであ
    ることを特徴とする請求項１１に記載のポータブル画像
    転送システム。
