Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 産業上の利用分野 本発明は自動車のエアバッグ装置、とりわけ、助手席
乗員保護用のエアバッグ装置に関する。
従来の技術 自動車の助手席乗員保護用のエアバッグ装置として
は、例えば特開昭58−76344号公報に示されているよう
に、助手席前方のインストルメントパネルの前方（縦
壁）にエアバッグユニットを格納配置し、エアバッグ膨
張時にその膨張圧により該格納部のリッドを開蓋して、
エアバッグを車室内に展開させるようにしたものが知ら
れている。
発明が解決しようとする課題 エアバッグユニットを助手席前方のインストルメント
パネル前面に格納配置するために、グローブボックスの
設定スペースがなくなってしまい、あるいは、グローブ
ボックスを設定できたとしても狭く制約されてしまい、
小物収納部が不足する不具合がある。この不具合対策と
しては、エアバッグユニットをインストルメントパネル
の上面に配置できればよいのであるが、インストルメン
トパネルの上方にはフロントウィンドウパネルが後傾状
態に存在しているため、エアバッグ展開時の圧力でフロ
ントウィンドウパネルが破損すると、乗員を拘束するた
めのエアバッグ反力面が得られなくなってしまうことか
ら、実現性に乏しい状況にある。そこで、本発明はフロ
ントウィンドウパネルの破損の危惧なくインストルメン
トパネル上面へのエアバッグユニットの配設を可能とし
て、グローブボックスのレイアウトの自由度を拡大する
ことができる自動車のエアバッグ装置を提供するもので
ある。
課題を解決するための手段 インストルメントパネルの上面に、エアバッグ膨張時
にその膨張圧を受けて車室前方に向けて開蓋可能なエア
バッグカバーを有するエアバッグユニットを配設すると
共に、このエアバッグユニットに、エアバッグ展開時の
エアバッグカバーの全開角度を規制する開度規制手段を
付設してある。
作用 エアバッグの膨張圧によりエアバックカバーが開蓋す
るが、その全開角度が一定に規制されて、該エアバック
カバーによりエアバッグの展開に指向性が付与され、該
エアバッグは車室後方に向けて展開する。
実施例 以下、本発明の一実施例を図面と共に詳述する。
第１〜４図において、１はインストルメントパネル、
２はフロントウィンドウパネル、３はルーフパネルを示
し、図外の助手席に対向するインストルメントパネル１
の上面にはエアバッグ取付孔４を形成してあって、この
エアバッグ取付孔４にエアバッグユニット５を配設して
ある。エアバッグユニット５は、トレー状のベースプレ
ート６と、ベースプレート６底部に装着したガス発生器
7,該ベースプレート６にガス発生器７を囲繞して装着さ
れ、かつ、折り畳んで収納されたエアバッグ８と、該エ
アバッグ８を被覆するエアバックカバー９とからなって
いる。ベースプレート6,エアバックカバー９は、それら
の周縁フランジ6a,9aを重合してボルト・ナット10固定
してあり、ベースプレート６をステアリングサポートメ
ンバ11にブラケット12を介して固定して、エアバックカ
バー９上面がインストルメントパネル１上面と面一に整
合するように配設してある。エアバックカバー９はエア
バッグ８の展開時の飛散を避けるため補強用の布13をイ
ンサートしたウレタン発泡成形体からなっている。この
エアバックカバー９の後側部および両側部には、布13の
インサートがなく、かつ、薄肉に形成した易破断部14を
連続して形成してあると共に、エアバッグカバー９の前
側部には、前記両側部の易破断部14に連なって薄肉のヒ
ンジ部15を形成してあり、エアバッグ８の展開時には、
このエアバッグカバー９が、前記易破断部14から破断し
てヒンジ部15を支点として車室前方に開蓋し得るように
なっている。そして、このエアバッグユニット５に、前
記エアバックカバー９の開度規制手段16を付設してあ
る。開度規制手段16として、本実施例では前記布13に予
め縫製した布製のストラップを用いている。このストラ
ップ16はエアバックカバー９上壁の、前記両側部の易破
断部14,14で画成された範囲で、後側部の易破断部14の
近傍に沿って車幅方向にインサートしてあり、両端部は
両側部の易破断部14,14近傍よりエアバックカバー９裏
面側に引き出し、各端末をベースプレート６の周縁フラ
ンジ6aにリテーナプレート17を介してボルト・ナット18
固定してある。このストラップ16両端部の長さは、エア
バッグ８が展開した時に、該エアバッグ８がフロントウ
ィンドウパネル２を直撃しない適宜の角度でエアバック
カバー９が全開規制し得る長さとすることは勿論であ
る。
以上の実施例構造によれば、車両衝突時に図外の減速
度センサの信号にもとづいてガス発生器７が発火，作動
し、発生ガスによりエアバッグ８が膨張すると、エアバ
ックカバー９はこの膨張圧を受けて易破断部14より破断
し、ヒンジ部15を支点として車室前方に開蓋する。この
エアバックカバー９の開蓋によりエアバッグ８は車室内
に大きく展開するが、前記エアバックカバー９の全開位
置がストラップ16によって規制されているため、エアバ
ックカバー９はフロントウィンドウパネル２を直撃する
ことなく車室後方向に向けて展開すると同時に、インス
トルメントパネル１上面，フロントウィンドウパネル２
およびルーフパネル３等を反力面として、慣性移動する
乗員Ｈを柔軟に受け止めて拘束する。
発明の効果 以上のように本発明によれば、エアバッグユニットを
インストルメントパネルの上面に配設してあって、しか
も、このエアバッグユニットはエアバッグ膨張時のエア
バックカバーの全開角度を開度規制手段によって規制
し、エアバッグに車室後方への展開指向性を付与してフ
ロントウィンドウパネルへの直撃を回避できるため、エ
アバッグ反力面を確保してエアバッグ本来の機能を発揮
させることができる。そして、このようにエアバッグユ
ニットをスペース的に制約を受けることのないインスト
ルメントパネル上面に配設してあるため、そのレイアウ
トの自由度を拡大できることは勿論、インストルメント
パネルのグローブボックスの設定についても何等制約を
与えることもないという実用上多大な効果を有する。

    (57)【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】インストルメントパネルの上面に、エアバ
    ッグ膨張時にその膨張圧を受けて車室前方に向けて開蓋
    可能なエアバッグカバーを有するエアバッグユニットを
    配設すると共に、このエアバッグユニットに、エアバッ
    グ展開時のエアバッグカバーの全開角度を規制する開度
    規制手段を付設したことを特徴とする自動車のエアバッ
    グ装置。
