Abstract
Description
ディスプレイは、所望の画像を表示するためのイルミネータ制御信号17及びモジュレータ制御信号18を生成するコントローラ19を含む。所望の画像は画像データ11により特徴付けられ、各画素の輝度値(及びもし画像がカラー画像である場合、明度)を直接又は間接的に特定する。画像データ11は任意の適切なフォーマットを有し、任意の適切な色モデルを利用して輝度及び明度を特定する。例えば、画像データ11は、・各画素の赤、緑及び青(RGB)明度、・各画素が、輝度として参照される値(Y)と、クロミナンスとして参照される値の組(I,Q)とにより表されるYIQ値、・CMY又はCMYK値、・YUV値、・YCbCr値、・HSV値、・HSL値、のいずれかを特定する。

であることが望ましい。但し、TMINは画素要素の最小の透過性であり、TMAXは画素要素の最大の透過性であり、且つLIMAGEは画像データ11により指定される画素の輝度である。式(1)の関係は、各色のLED12の各画素に対して独立に保たれることが好ましい。
全LED26の最大強度が同じである必要は無い。異なる色のLEDは異なる効率を有する傾向がある。典型的には、赤LEDの効率(所与の電力に対して生成される光量)は緑LEDのものよりも大きい。典型的な赤及び緑LEDは青LEDのものよりも大きな効率を有する。ある点までは、費用をかけるほど任意の利用可能な色のより明るいLEDを取得することができる。ディスプレイを設計する者は、最大の光出力、必要とする電力、費用などのファクタに基づいて適切なLEDを選択する。現在では、フラックス比が3:5:1を有する赤、緑、及び青LEDを提供すると、最もコスト効率が良いということが常識として分かっている。このようなフラックス比では、赤LEDは青LEDよりも3倍明るく、且つ緑LEDは青LEDよりも5倍明るい。
Claims (17)
- ディスプレイであって、
複数の群の配列された対応する複数の色の光源を含むイルミネータであって、各群の光源は、モジュレータを照明するように構成され、且つ前記モジュレータにおける対応する色の制御可能に変化する有効輝度パターンを生成するように制御可能である、前記イルミネータと、
複数の要素をそれぞれ有する複数の画素を含む前記モジュレータであって、前記複数の画素の各々の複数の要素は、前記複数の群の光源のうちの一群の光源の色に対応する色をそれぞれ有する複数の色要素を含み、前記複数の色要素の各々は、前記複数の群の光源のうちの他の群の光源からの光を実質的に遮断しながら、前記複数の群の光源のうちの対応する群の光源からの光を通過させるフィルタを有し、前記複数の色要素の各々は、表示領域に到達する対応する群の光源から前記色要素に入射する対応する色の光の割合を変更するように制御可能であり、前記複数の画素の複数の要素は、前記複数の色のうちの2つ以上の光を前記表示領域に到達させる少なくとも1つの広帯域要素を含む、前記モジュレータと、
前記複数の群の各々において前記複数の光源の異なる光源の強度を独立して制御するように構成されるイルミネータ駆動回路と、
前記複数の画素を通過して前記表示領域に到達する光の割合を制御するように構成されるモジュレータ駆動回路と、
コントローラであって、前記モジュレータの複数の画素に対して、
画像データから、前記表示領域に到達すべき前記複数の色のうちの1つの色に対する所望の光量を確定すること、
前記少なくとも1つの広帯域要素を通過する一つの色の光量を前記所望の光量から差し引くこと、
前記1つの色の所望の光量が前記表示領域に到達するように、前記1つの色に対応する色要素を前記表示領域に前記1つの色の十分な光を到達させるように設定すること、を実行するように構成される前記コントローラと、を備えるディスプレイ。 - 前記複数の色要素のフィルタは、対応する群の光源によって照射される対応する色の光の帯域幅よりも広い幅を有する通過帯域を有する、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。
- 前記複数の色要素の通過帯域は、150nm以下の幅を有する、請求項1または2に記載のディスプレイ。
- 前記複数の光源によって照射された光は、50nm以下の帯域幅を有する、請求項1〜3のいずれか一項に記載のディスプレイ。
- 前記モジュレータは、液晶ディスプレイパネルを含む、請求項1〜4のいずれか一項に記載のディスプレイ。
- 前記複数の光源は、発光ダイオードを含む、請求項1〜5のいずれか一項に記載のディスプレイ。
- 前記複数の群の配列された光源は、
赤色光を照射可能な第1の群の配列された光源と、緑色光を照射可能な第2の群の配列された光源と、青色光を照射可能な第3の群の配列された光源と、を含む、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。 - 前記複数の群の配列された光源の複数の光源は、共通のアレイ内に互いに離散している、請求項1〜7のいずれか一項に記載のディスプレイ。
- 前記コントローラは、前記モジュレータの各群の光源の有効輝度パターンを決定し、対応する有効輝度パターンに部分的に基づいて前記モジュレータの複数の色要素を設定するように構成される、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。
- 追加の色の光を照射可能な追加の群の配列された光源を備え、
前記追加の群の光源は、前記モジュレータを照明するように構成され、且つ前記モジュレータの追加の色の光の制御可能に可変の有効輝度パターンを生成するように制御可能であり、前記追加の色は、前記複数の広帯域要素によってのみ前記表示領域に到達させることができる、請求項1〜9のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ。 - 前記追加の色は、黄色である、請求項10に記載のディスプレイ。
- 前記複数の群の光源の各群の光源は、光源間隔で互いから離間し、前記複数の群の光源のうちの第1の群の光源の光源間隔は、前記複数の群の光源のうちの第2の群の光源の光源間隔とは異なる、請求項1〜11のいずれか一項に記載のディスプレイ。
- 前記第2の群の光源の光源間隔に対する前記第1の群の光源の光源間隔の比は、前記第2の群の光源の点像分布関数の幅に対する前記第1の群の光源の点像分布関数の幅の比の15%以内である、請求項12に記載のディスプレイ。
- 前記イルミネータは、発光ダイオード(LED)バックライトを含み、
前記複数の群の配列された光源のうちの1つ以上の群の複数の光源は、局所的に減光されて電力消費を低減する、請求項1に記載のディスプレイ。 - 画像の暗い複数の領域に対応する複数の領域において前記イルミネータの明るさを低減させるように構成されたコントローラを備える請求項1〜14のいずれか一項に記載のディスプレイ。
- 前記ディスプレイは、テレビジョンモニタのディスプレイであり、

複数の群の配列された対応する複数の色の光源を含むイルミネータを提供することであって、各群の光源は、モジュレータを照明するように構成され、前記モジュレータにおける対応する色の制御可能に変化する有効輝度パターンを生成するように制御可能であり、前記モジュレータは、複数の要素をそれぞれ有する複数の画素を含み、前記複数の画素の各々の複数の要素は、前記複数の群の光源のうちの一群の光源の色に対応する色をそれぞれ有する複数の色要素を含み、前記複数の色要素の各々は、前記複数の群の光源のうちの他の群の光源からの光を実質的に遮断しながら、前記複数の群の光源のうちの対応する群の光源からの光を通過させるフィルタを有し、前記複数の色要素の各々は、表示領域に到達する対応する群の光源から前記色要素に入射する対応する色の光の割合を変更するように制御可能であり、前記複数の画素の複数の要素は、前記複数の色のうちの2つ以上の光を前記表示領域に到達させる少なくとも1つの広帯域要素を含む、前記イルミネータを提供すること、
画像データから、前記表示領域を到達すべき前記複数の色のうちの1つの色に対する所望の光量を確定すること、
前記少なくとも1つの広帯域要素を通過する一つの色の光量を前記所望の光量から差し引くこと、
前記1つの色の所望の光量が前記表示領域に到達するように、前記1つの色に対応する色要素を前記表示領域に前記1つの色の十分な光を到達させるように設定すること、を備える方法。
