Abstract
【解決手段】正孔輸送層に接する第1の発光層と、第1の発光層に接する第2の発光層を有する発光素子であって、第1の発光層と第2の発光層はバイポーラ性のホスト材料と、ゲスト材料である発光物質を含んでいる。第1の発光層が含むゲスト材料は、第2の発光層が含むゲスト材料に比べて正孔を捕獲する力が弱く、第1の発光層の正孔輸送性は第2の発光層より高められている。その結果、正孔と電子の再結合領域が発光層内に広がって形成される。また、発光層を通り抜けて正孔輸送層に到達する電子が正孔輸送層を還元しないように、正孔輸送層が抗還元物質を含んでいる。

Description
本実施の形態が例示する発光素子は、少なくとも、正孔輸送層に一方の面を接する第1の発光層と、第1の発光層の他方の面に接する第2の発光層を有する発光素子である。第1の発光層と第2の発光層はバイポーラ性のホスト材料と、発光物質であるゲスト材料を含んでいる。また、第1の発光層は、第2の発光層が含むゲスト材料に比べて正孔を捕獲する力が弱いゲスト材料を含んでおり、第1の発光層の正孔輸送性は第2の発光層よりも高い。その結果、正孔が正孔輸送層から離れた領域まで運ばれ、正孔と電子の再結合領域が発光層内に広がって形成される。さらに、発光層を通り抜けて正孔輸送層に到達する電子が正孔輸送層を劣化させないように、正孔輸送層は抗還元物質を含んでいる。

本実施の形態が例示する発光素子は、少なくとも、正孔輸送層に一方の面を接する第1の発光層と、第1の発光層の他方の面に接する第2の発光層と、第2の発光層の陰極側の面に接する第3の発光層を有する発光素子である。第1の発光層、第2の発光層及び第3の発光層はそれぞれバイポーラ性のホスト材料と、発光物質であるゲスト材料を含んでいる。また、第1の発光層は、第2の発光層が含むゲスト材料に比べて正孔を捕獲する力が弱いゲスト材料を含んでおり、第2の発光層は、第3の発光層が含むゲスト材料に比べて正孔を捕獲する力が弱いゲスト材料を含んでいる。第1の発光層の正孔輸送性は第2の発光層以上であって、第2の発光層の正孔輸送性は第3の発光層よりも高い。その結果、正孔が正孔輸送層から離れた領域まで運ばれ、正孔と電子の再結合領域が発光層内に広がって形成される。さらに、発光層を通り抜けて正孔輸送層に到達する電子が正孔輸送層を劣化させないように、正孔輸送層が抗還元物質を含んでいる。
本実施の形態では、本発明の一態様の発光素子を用いて作製された発光装置について図12および図13を用いて説明する。なお、図12(A)は、発光装置を示す上面図、図12(B)は図12(A)をA−A’で切断した断面図である。点線で示された401は駆動回路部(ソース側駆動回路)、402は画素部、403は駆動回路部(ゲート側駆動回路)である。また、404は封止基板、405はシール材であり、シール材405で囲まれた内側は、空間407になっている。
本実施の形態では、実施の形態4に示す発光装置を適用した電子機器について説明する。本発明の電子機器は、実施の形態1乃至は実施の形態3に示した発光素子を含み、消費電力が低減され、長時間駆動可能な表示部を有する。また、色再現性に優れた表示部を有する。
本実施例で示す発光素子1の素子構造を図6(A)に、バンド構造の一部を図6(B)に示す。発光素子1は第1の電極1502上に複数の層が積層されたEL層1503を形成する。本実施例において、EL層1503は、正孔輸送層1512、発光層1513(第1の発光層1513a、及び第2の発光層1513b)、電子輸送層1514、電子注入層1515が順次積層された構造を有する。
本実施例で示す発光素子2の素子構造を図6(A)に、バンド構造の一部を図6(C)に示す。発光素子2が有する第2の発光層1513bのホスト材料は、発光素子1が有する第2の発光層1513bのホスト材料と異なる。それ以外は発光素子1と同じ構成を有するためここでは詳細な説明を省略する。
本実施例で示す発光素子3の素子構造を図7(A)に、バンド構造の一部を図7(B)に示す。発光素子3は第1の電極1502上に複数の層が積層されたEL層1503を形成する。本実施例において、EL層1503は、正孔輸送層1512、第1の発光層1513a、第2の発光層1513b、第3の発光層1513c、電子輸送層1514、電子注入層1515が順次積層された構造を有する。
測定に用いる参照電極(Ag/Ag+電極)の真空準位に対するポテンシャルエネルギー(eV)を算出する方法について説明する。なお、参照電極(Ag/Ag+電極)の真空準位に対するポテンシャルエネルギーは、Ag/Ag+電極のフェルミ準位に相当する。
参照電極に対する作用電極の電位を正の値の範囲で走査し、前述の要領で調整した試料溶液をCV測定する。ここでの正の値の範囲は、酸化反応が起こる範囲であって、代表的には試料の一電子酸化が起こる範囲とする。
参照電極に対する作用電極の電位を負の値の範囲で走査し、前述の要領で調整した試料溶液をCV測定する。ここでの負の値の範囲は、還元反応が起こる範囲であって、代表的には試料の一電子還元が起こる範囲とする。
本実施例で作製した発光素子4の素子構造を図20(A)に、バンド構造の一部を図20(B)に示す。発光素子4は第1の電極1502上に複数の層が積層されたEL層1503を有する。本実施例の発光素子4のEL層1503は、正孔輸送層1512、発光層1513、電子輸送層1514、並びに電子注入層1515が順次積層された構造を有する。なお、発光層1513は第1の発光層1513aに第2の発光層1513bを積層した構成を備え、電子輸送層1514は第1の電子輸送層1514aに第2の電子輸送層1514bを積層した構成を備える。
本実施例で作製した発光素子5の素子構造を図20(A)に、バンド構造の一部を図20(C)に示す。発光素子5は第1の電極1502上に複数の層が積層されたEL層1503を有する。本実施例の発光素子5のEL層1503は、正孔輸送層1512、発光層1513、電子輸送層1514、並びに電子注入層1515が順次積層された構造を有する。なお、発光層1513は第1の発光層1513aに第2の発光層1513bを積層した構成を備え、電子輸送層1514は第1の電子輸送層1514aに第2の電子輸送層1514bを積層した構成を備える。
本実施例で作製した比較素子1の素子構造を図21(A)に、バンド構造の一部を図21(B)に示す。比較素子1は第1の電極1502上に複数の層が積層されたEL層1503を有する。比較素子1のEL層1503は、正孔輸送層1512、発光層1513b、電子輸送層1514、並びに電子注入層1515が順次積層された構造を有する。なお、発光層1513bは一層のみからなり、電子輸送層1514は第1の電子輸送層1514aに第2の電子輸送層1514bを積層した構成を備える。
本実施例で作製した比較素子2の素子構造を図21(A)に、バンド構造の一部を図21(C)に示す。比較素子2は第1の電極1502上に複数の層が積層されたEL層1503を有する。比較素子2のEL層1503は、正孔輸送層1512、発光層1513b、電子輸送層1514、並びに電子注入層1515が順次積層された構造を有する。なお、発光層1513bは一層のみからなり、電子輸送層1514は第1の電子輸送層1514aに第2の電子輸送層1514bを積層した構成を備える。

- 前記抗還元物質が有機化合物であって、前記有機化合物のLUMO準位(LUMOARM)は、前記第1の発光層が含むホスト材料のLUMO準位(LUMOHOST1)より深く、前記抗還元物質のバンドギャップΔEARMは、前記第1の発光層が含む発光物質のバンドギャップΔEEM1より大きく、前記抗還元物質のHOMO準位(HOMOARM)は、正孔輸送層が含む前記有機化合物のHOMO準位(HOMOHTL)より深い請求項1乃至9記載の発光素子。
- 前記正孔輸送層が抗還元物質を含み、陽極に直接接している請求項1乃至10記載の発光素子。
