（発明の背景）
本発明はメディア記録システムに関するものである。具体的には、本発明は不正確な間隔で配信されるメディアが記録される場合、そのメディアの中断間隔の低減を提供するメディア記録システムに関するものである。
テレビ番組、ペイ・パー・ビュー番組、ニア・ビデオ・オン・デマンド（ＮＶＯＤ）番組、ビデオ・オン・デマンド（ＶＯＤ）番組、音楽、プロモーション番組、および他のタイプのメディアなどのビデオやオーディオメディアは、概して有線または無線ネットワークを介してユーザに配信されている。適切な有線および無線ネットワークには、例えばテレビ放送システムネットワーク、一方向および二方向のケーブルテレビシステムネットワーク、デジタル放送サービス（ＤＢＳ）、および他の衛星配信サービスネットワーク、インターネット、ならびに他の適切なタイプのネットワークが含まれ得る。ユーザのメディアの視聴体験は、典型的にメディアプロバイダの配信スケジュールによって決定される。オーディオカセットレコーダやビデオレコーダ、また他のメディア記録機器がもたらされたことで、現在ユーザは、視聴体験を再現し、時間をずらす能力を有する。ユーザは、いるときまたはいないときに番組を記録することができ、番組を再生して後で視聴し得る。
最近になってユーザが、よりフレキシブルに視聴体験を管理し、メディアを記録することを可能にする製品が開発された。例えばＴＩＶＯ製およびＲＥＰＬＡＹ製のパーソナルビデオレコーダ（ＰＶＲ）はハードディスクドライブに番組を記録する。ユーザは記録する番組を予約し、後でその番組を再生し得る。これらのシステムは、ユーザがリアルタイムで見ている番組を記録し、例えばユーザがテレビの部屋を離れなければならない場合、ユーザがリアルタイムの番組を一時停止することを可能にする。部屋に戻るとユーザは見逃したところから再び見始めることができ、番組が提供されている時点に達するまでテレビのコマーシャルを早送りすることさえできる。ユーザは番組を巻き戻すこともできる。

例えば、スポーツイベントのようなリアルタイムのイベントが延長されている場合、テレビ番組または他のメディアが予定された時刻と異なる時刻に開始されることがある。スポーツイベントを記録する場合、（例えば、スポーツイベントでのオーバータイムによって）公表されている終了予定時刻よりも遅くまで予期せず延長されることがあり、ユーザはそのイベントの記録が早期に中断することを経験し得る。更に、終了予定時刻を過ぎても予期せず行われているスポーツイベントに続いて予定されている番組をユーザが予約している場合、ユーザは隣接イベントを不適切に記録し得る。アプローチの一つとして番組を記録するときに、開始および終了時刻のそのようなばらつきを考慮するように、ユーザがパディングを特定することを可能にすることがあった。例えば、ＲＥＰＬＡＹの製品には、ユーザが手動でパディングを設定することを可能にする機能が組み込まれ得る。しかしながら、ユーザがパディングの量を予約することを課せられる点、およびパディングまたはパディングの一部が所望の番組の記録に用いられない場合、所望しないコンテンツに記録メディアを無駄にしている点においてこのアプローチは不完全である。また、このアプローチは、公表されている時間からの時間の変更がネットワークごとおよび番組ごとに様々であり得る場合は不適切である。ユーザが必要とされる適切なパディングの量を思い出すことができない場合、ユーザは、記録時間を無駄にするか、または短く見積もることによる中断の危険を冒すかのいずれかである。
上記の説明の観点から、本発明の目的は不正確な間隔で配信されるメディアを記録する場合の中断を低減するシステムおよび方法を提供することである。

本発明の、このおよび他の目的は、媒体の配信の時間変更を決定し得る媒体記録システムを提供することによって、本発明の原理に従って達成される。格納デバイス、ＰＶＲシステム、インテリジェントＶＣＲ、他の任意の好適なシステム、あるいはそれらの組み合わせを有する双方向番組ガイドシステムなどの媒体記録システムが提供される。媒体記録システムは、スケジューリングされた開始時間および／あるいは終了時間から媒体イベントの開始時間を延期し、および／あるいは終了時間を延長するために、媒体配信器（ｄｉｓｔｒｉｂｕｔｏｒ）によって利用される時間変化を追跡してもよい。
記録システムは、スケジュールに沿って任意の好適な配信方法（例えば、無線、ケーブル、衛星、インターネットなど）を利用して配信されるテレビ番組、オーディオ番組、販売促進資料、あるいは任意の他の好適な媒体を記録するために利用されてもよい。システムは、所望の媒体イベントの早いあるいは遅れた記録に関して、例えば、ユーザに秒あるいは分ごとの増加（例えば、１分ごとの増加）を指定する機会を提供し得る。チャンネル、ネットワーク、媒体プロバイダあるいはタイトルによって、あるいは他の好適な基準を利用してどのように秒あるいは分ごとの増加を設定するかについて決定してもよい。システムは、媒体が開始あるいはまさに開始、あるいは終了あるいはまさに終了あるいはちょうど終了であることを示す識別子あるいは任意の他のキューについて、リアルタイムデータストリームをモニタしてもよい。例えば、チャネル上で垂直帰線消去期間（ＶＢＩ）のデータがまさに開始しようとする個々の媒体のシステムを通知するためにモニタされてもよい。媒体の記録がユーザの機器あるいはユーザの家まで遠く離れたサーバによって実施されてもよい。
願わくば、媒体に関連するデータは、記録システムに提供され得る。双方向番組ガイドに関する番組リストデータなどの関連データは、任意の好適なアプローチ（例えば、連続ストリーム、周期的な通信、クライアント／サーバベースのアプローチ、任意の他の好適なアプローチあるいはそれらの組み合わせ）を利用して、記録された媒体と共に、あるいは媒体から分離されて、提供されてもよい。関連データは、媒体プロバイダによって要求される媒体の放送に関する時間変更（例えば、特定時間の遅延あるいは延長）を示し得る。時間遅延あるいは時間延期は、定刻前に、媒体プロバイダによって指示されてもよい。あるいは、時間遅延あるいは時間延期は、過去に発生した時間変更に基づいて、データプロバイダによって予測され得る。時間遅延および時間延長は、データプロバイダなどによってリアルタイム／ほぼリアルタイムで入力されてもよい。あるいは時間遅延および時間延長は、媒体内のキューに基づいて自動的に認識されてもよい。記録システムは自動的に調整されてもよい。あるいは記録システムは、ユーザが時間遅延情報および時間延長情報に基づいて番組に関する記録時間を調整することが可能であってもよい。
（発明の詳細な説明）
本発明の原理に従った例示的なシステム１０が、図１に示される。媒体は、１以上の主設備１２からテレビ配信設備２４および最終的にユーザテレビ機器２６に配信され得る。配信された媒体は、少なくとも部分的にユーザテレビ機器２６で、あるいは少なくとも部分的にユーザテレビ機器２６から遠くはなれたサーバ（図２で更に述べられる）で、実行される機器を利用して記録されてもよい。記録される媒体は、任意の好適なオーディオ媒体および／あるいはビデオ媒体であってもよい。例えば、任意の好適なオーディオ媒体および／あるいはビデオ媒体は、テレビ番組、ペイ−パー−ビュー番組、ビデオオンデマンド（ＶＯＤ）番組、音楽、販売促進資料および一般に有線および無線ネットワークによって視聴者に配信される他の任意のタイプの媒体であり得る。明確化のために、限定の目的ではなく、本明細書に記載される媒体記録システム、技術あるいは方法は、主に番組編成のために番組を記録するコンテキストにおいて記載される。記録システムに関するデータは、データ配信システムによって提供され得る。データ配信システムは、媒体を配信するネットワークあるいはシステムから分離してデータを提供し得る。他の好適な配信スキーム（インターネットを介したデータ伝送に関するスキームなど）もまた利用され得る。願わくば、プログラミングの記録は、クライアントサーバアーキテクチャを利用して実行され得る。このアーキテクチャにおいて、番組の検出および番組の記録に関する操作は、部分的にはサーバ（例えば、テレビ配信設備２４あるいは主設備１２のサーバ）およびユーザテレビ機器２６によって提供されてもよい。
主設備１２は、番組ガイド情報（例えば、テレビ番組リストデータ、番組関連情報、チャンネルリストデータ、チャンネル関連情報、ネットワークリストデータ、ナットワーク関連情報、パッケージリストデータ、パッケージ関連情報、ペイ−パービュー注文情報、テレビ番組販売促進情報、番組ガイドインターネット関連情報など）を格納する番組ガイド情報データベース１４、ビデオオンデマンド（ＶＯＤ）データベース１６、チャンネルマッピングデータベース１８あるいは任意の他の適用可能なデータベースを含んでもよい。複数の主設備１２は、データをテレビ配信設備２４に提供してもよい。図が過度に複雑になることを回避するために１つの主設備のみが図に示される。例えば、１つの主設備は番組ガイド情報を提供するために利用され、他の主設備は、特定の媒体情報を提供してもよい。
主設備１２は、番組ガイドデータベース１４からの情報および任意の他の情報を通信リンク２２を介してテレビ配信設備２４に送信してもよい。実際には、主設備１２は、情報を平行して複数のテレビ配信設備に送信してもよい。図が過度に複雑になることを回避するために１つのテレビ配信設備のみが、図に示される。ある実施形態において、主設備１２は、ウェブサイトを備えるインターネットサーバなどの他のタイプの配信設備あるいは無線配信設備などの別個の番組ガイド配信設備に情報を送信してもよい。
通信リンク２２は、衛星リンク、電話ネットワークリンク、インターネットリンク、光ファイバリンク、他の好適な通信リンク、あるいはそのような通信リンクの組み合わせであってもよい。任意の好適な番組の内容は通信リンク２２を介して主設備１２によって送信されてもよい。送信される番組の種類に依存して、より効果的である適したリンクが確立されてもよい。例えば、通信リンク２２を介してビデオ信号を送信することを望む場合、衛星リンクなどの比較的高帯域幅のリンクが、比較的低帯域幅のリンクよりも好ましくあり得る。テレビ配信設備２４は、テレビ番組を視聴者に配信するために好適な任意の設備（例えば、ケーブルシステムヘッドエンド、放送配信設備、あるいは衛星テレビ配信設備）であってもよい。
テレビ配信設備２４は、１以上の主設備１２などの主設備から受け取られた情報を通信パス３０を介してユーザテレビ機器２６に配信してもよい。ユーザテレビ機器２６は、十分な処理能力を有する任意の好適なテレビ機器であってもよく、本発明に関して、高度な番組記録方法および機能を実行し得る。
通信経路３０は、ケーブルリンク、光ファイバリンク、衛星リンク、放送リンク、他の適切なリンク、または、このようなリンクの組み合わせであり得る。任意の適切な通信方式を用いて、通信経路３０を介してデータを伝送することができる。このような通信方式には、帯域内伝送、帯域外伝送、デジタル伝送、アナログ伝送、ケーブル伝送、衛星伝送、放送伝送、マルチチャンネルマルチポイント配信サービス（ＭＭＤＳ）伝送、データオーバケーブルサービスインターフェース仕様（ＤＯＣＳＩＳ）伝送、または、任意の他の適切な通信方式が含まれる。典型的には、複数の関連した通信経路３０があるが、図面を過度に複雑にするのを避けるため、図面には通信経路３０を１つだけ示す。
通信経路３０は、好ましくは、テレビ配信設備２４が、テレビ番組編成、番組ガイド情報、ＶＯＤおよびＮＶＯＤ情報および他の情報をユーザテレビ機器２６に配信可能にするに十分な帯域幅を有している。複数のテレビおよびオーディオチャンネル（アナログ、デジタル、または、アナログおよびデジタルの両方）が、通信経路３０を介してユーザテレビ機器２６に提供され得る。所望ならば、一部のデータが、通信経路３０の一部、または、通信経路３０とは完全に別個の通信経路を用いて、テレビ配信設備２４とは別個の１つ以上の配信設備によって、ユーザテレビ機器２６に配信されてもよい。
通信経路３０を介してデータ配信するために用いられるデータ配信技術は、配信されている情報の種類に依存し得る。例えば、テキストおよびグラフィックスは、帯域外変調器を用いて帯域外チャンネルを介して配信され得るか、または、アナログビデオチャンネルの垂直帰線消去期間（ＶＢＩ）線で配信され得る。大容量のビデオ情報が、通信経路３０を介して１つ以上のデジタルチャンネルを用いてより効率的に配信され得るが、ビデオ情報はまた、上述のようにして配信されてもよい。このようなデジタルチャンネルはまた、テキストおよびグラフィックスを配信するために用いられ得る。
コンピュータネットワークサーバ２８からの番組編成情報はまた、通信パス２８を介してユーザテレビ機器２６に伝達され得る。通信パス３２は、ダイアルアップ電話線、ケーブルリンク、光ファイバリンク、衛星リンク、放送リンク、他の適切なリンク、またはこのようなリンクの組み合わせであり得る。いくつかの実施形態では、コンピュータネットワークサーバ２８は、番組ガイド情報、ビデオオンデマンド情報、または他の情報を主設備１２で交換するために適切な通信パスを介して、主設備１２に接続され得る。
クライアントサーバベースの双方向テレビ番組ガイドは、テレビ配信設備２４（図１）で実行され得る。図２は、番組ガイドサーバが主設備１２から直接的に番組ガイドデータを得ることができるテレビ配信設備２４の例示的な構成を示す。
テレビ配信設備２４は、番組ガイド配信機器５６および番組ガイドサーバ５０を有し得る。配信機器５６は、通信パス３０を介して番組ガイドサーバ５０からユーザテレビ機器２６へ番組ガイドデータを提供するために適切な機器である。配信機器５６は、例えば、テレビチャンネル側波帯で、テレビチャンネルのＶＢＩで、帯域内デジタル信号を用いて、帯域外デジタル信号を用いて、専用のコンピュータネットワークまたはインターネットリンクを介して、あるいは通信パス３０のタイプに適した任意の他のデータ伝送技術によって番組ガイドデータを配信するための適切な伝送ハードウェアを含み得る。アナログまたはデジタルビデオ信号（例えば、テレビ番組）はまた、複数のアナログまたはデジタルテレビチャンネルで通信パス３０を介して、ユーザテレビ機器２６に配信機器５６によって配信され得る。あるいは、ビデオは、いくつかの他の適切な配信設備（例えば、ケーブルシステムヘッドエンド、放送配信設備、衛星テレビ配信設備、または任意の他の適切なタイプのテレビ配信設備）からユーザテレビ機器２６に配信され得る。所望であれば、テレビ番組編成および番組ガイドデータは、別個の通信パスを介して、および／または別個の配信設備から提供され得る。
番組ガイドサーバ５０は、サーバソフトウェアおよびハードウェアの任意の適切な組み合わせに基づき得る。番組ガイドサーバ５０は、ユーザテレビ機器２６で実行される双方向テレビ番組ガイドクライアントによって生成された番組ガイドデータまたはビデオリクエストに応じて、格納デバイス５４から番組ガイドデータまたはビデオファイルを取り出し得る。図２に示されるように、番組ガイドサーバ５０は、処理回路部５２および格納デバイス５４を含み得る。処理回路部５２は、マイクロプロセッサまたはマイクロプロセッサの群などの任意の適切なプロセッサと、キャッシュ回路部、ビデオ復号回路部、ダイレクトメモリアクセス（ＤＭＡ）回路部、入／出力（Ｉ／Ｏ）回路部などの他の処理回路部とを含み得る。
格納デバイス５４は、主設備１２によってテレビ配信設備２４に伝送された番組ガイドデータを格納するのに適した、ランダムアクセスメモリ（ＲＡＭ）、フラッシュメモリ、ハードディスクドライブなどのメモリまたは他の格納デバイスであり得る。嗜好、記録およびリマインダ設定、視聴履歴およびログならびに他の適切なデータなどのユーザデータも、また、番組ガイドサーバ５０によって格納デバイスに格納され得る。番組ガイドデータおよびユーザデータは、任意の適切なフォーマット（例えば、構造化照会言語（Ｓｔｒｕｃｔｕｒｅｄ Ｑｕｅｒｙ Ｌａｎｇｕａｇｅ（ＳＱＬ）データベース）で、格納デバイス５４に格納され得る。ストレージ５４は、また、オンデマンドに再生するために異なる番組ファイルを格納し得る。
処理回路部５２は、要求されたデータに対して格納デバイス５４に格納された番組ガイドデータを検索し、そのデータを取り出し、ユーザテレビ機器２６に配信するために配信機器５６にその取り出されたデータを提供することによって、番組ガイドデータに対するリクエストを処理し得る。処理回路部５２は、また、ユーザデータを格納するために番組ガイドサーバ５０に方向付ける番組ガイドクライアントによって生成された格納リクエストを処理し得る。あるいは、番組ガイドサーバ５０は、番組ガイドデータを配信し得、ユーザテレビ機器２６からユーザデータを直接的に受け取り得る。通信パス３０がインターネットリンク、ＤＯＣＳＩＳリンクまたは他の高速コンピュータネットワークリンク（例えば、デジタル加入者線（ＤＳＬ）、１０ＢａｓｅＴ、１００ＢａｓｅＴ、１０ＢａｓｅＦ、Ｔ１、Ｔ３など）を含む場合、処理回路部５２は、番組ガイドおよびユーザデータを送信し、そのようなリンクを介して番組ガイドデータおよび格納リクエストを受け取るのに適した回路部を含み得る。
番組ガイドサーバ５０は、任意の適切な通信プロトコルを用いて、ユーザテレビ機器２６と通信し得る。例えば、番組ガイドサーバ５０は、伝送制御プロトコル（ＴＣＰ）およびインターネットプロトコル（ＩＰ）層、シークエンスパケット交換（ＳＰＸ）、ネットワーク間パケット交換（ＩＰＸ）層、アップルトーク（Ａｐｐｌｅｔａｌｋ）処理プロトコル（ＡＴＰ）およびデータグラム送達プロトコル（ＤＤＰ）層、ＤＯＣＳＩＳまたは任意の他の適切なプロトコルまたはプロトコルの組み合わせを含む、通信プロトコルスタックを使用し得る。ユーザテレビ機器２６は、また、通信パス３０（例えば、イーサネット（Ｒ）カード、デジタルモデム、アナログモデム、ケーブルモデムなど）を介して、番組ガイドサーバ５０と通信するための適切なハードウェアを含み得る。
ユーザテレビ機器２６上で実行される番組ガイドクライアントは、任意の適切なクライアント‐サーバベースのアプローチを用いて、番組ガイドサーバ５０から番組ガイドデータを取り出し、番組ガイドサーバ５０にユーザデータを格納し得る。番組ガイドは、例えば、メッセージとしてＳＱＬリクエストを番組ガイドサーバ５０に通過させ得る。別の適切なアプローチにおいて、番組ガイドは、１つ以上のリモートプロシージャ呼び出しを用いて、番組ガイドサーバ５０上に常駐するリモートプロシージャを起動し得る。番組ガイドサーバ５０は、そのように起動されたリモートプロシージャに対するＳＬＱステートメントを実行し得る。さらに別の適切なアプローチにおいて、番組ガイドによって実行されるクライアントオブジェクトは、例えば、オブジェクトリクエストブローカ（ＯＲＢ）を用いて、番組ガイドサーバ５０によって実行されたサーバオブジェクトと通信し得る。これは、例えば、マイクロソフトのＤｉｓｔｒｉｂｕｔｅｄ Ｃｏｍｐｏｎｅｎｔ Ｏｂｊｅｃｔ Ｍｏｄｅｌ（ＤＣＯＭ）アプローチを用いることを伴い得る。本明細書において用いられるように、「記録リクエスト」および「格納リクエスト」は、プロセス間またはオブジェクト間通信のこれらの任意のタイプまたはプロセス間またはオブジェクト間通信の任意の他の適切なタイプを含むことが意図されている。
ユーザテレビ装置２６に対する実例となる構成が図３に示されている。ユーザテレビ装置２６は、テレビプログラムおよびデータをテレビ配信設備２４（図１）、コンピュータネットワークサーバ２８（図１）、なんらかの他のシステムまたは配信設備、または、これらの組み合わせからインターフェース７０において受信し得る。通常のテレビ視聴の間、ユーザは、セットトップボックス７２を所望のテレビチャンネルに調整し得る。該当するテレビチャンネルに対する信号は、その後、映像出力８４でテレビ９０に提供され得る。出力８４において供給される信号は、事前に規定された周波数のチャンネル（例えば、チャンネル３または４）の変調された信号、アナログ復調映像信号、適切なデジタルバス（例えば、電気電子学会（ＩＥＥＥ）１３９４標準を用いたバス）に提供されたデジタル信号、または、任意の他の適切な信号であり得る。出力８４での映像信号は、二次格納デバイス８６によって受信され得る。
番組を記録する機能は、セットトップボックス７２上、テレビ９０上（テレビ９０が適切な処理回路およびメモリを有する場合）、テレビ９０に接続された適切なアナログまたはデジタル受信器上、二次格納デバイス８６上、または、任意の他の適切なデバイス上に集積され得る。番組を記録する機能は、さらに、これらのデバイスの適切な組み合わせ上で共同して実行され得る。
二次格納デバイス８６は、任意の適切な種類のアナログまたはデジタル格納デバイスまたはプレーヤー（例えば、パーソナルビデオレコーダー（ＰＶＲ）、インテリジェントＶＣＲ等）であり得る。番組記録および他の番組は、制御パス８２を用いたセットトップボックス７２によって制御され得る。二次格納デバイス８６がビデオカセットレコーダである場合、典型的な制御パス８２は、例えば、ビデオカセットレコーダ内の赤外線受信器に結合された赤外線送信器の使用を伴い得る。このビデオカセットレコーダは、通常、コマンドをリモートコントロール９２等のリモートコントロールから受け取る。リモートコントロール９２は、セットトップボックス７２、二次格納デバイス８６、およびテレビ９０を制御するために用いられ得る。
所望の場合、ユーザは、プログラム、アプリケーションデータまたはこれらの組み合わせを、デジタル形式でオプションのデジタル格納デバイス７６上に記録し得る。デジタル格納デバイス７６は、書き込み可能なオプションの格納デバイス（記録可能ＤＶＤディスクを操作可能なＤＶＤプレーヤー等）、磁気格納デバイス（ディスクドライブまたはデジタルテープ等）、または任意の他のデジタル格納デバイスであり得る。例えば、デジタル格納デバイスを有する双方向テレビプログラムガイドシステムが、１９９８年９月１７日に出願された米国特許出願第０９／１５７，２５６号（Ｈａｓｓｅｌら）に記載されている。この特許出願を、本明細書の全体として、参考として援用する。
デジタル格納デバイス７６は、セットトップボックス７２内に含まれ得るか、または、出力ポートおよび適切なインターフェースを介してセットトップボックス７２の外部であり得る。必要な場合、セットトップボックス７２内の処理回路は、受信された映像、音声およびデータ信号をデジタルファイルフォーマットにフォーマット化し得る。ファイルフォーマットは、Ｍｏｖｉｎｇ Ｐｉｃｔｕｒｅ Ｅｘｐｅｒｔｓ Ｇｒｏｕｐ（ＭＰＥＧ）のＭＰＥＧ−２標準またはＭｏｖｉｎｇ Ｊｏｉｎｔ Ｐｈｏｔｏｇｒａｐｈｉｃ Ｅｘｐｅｒｔｓ Ｇｒｏｕｐ（ＭＪＰＥＧ）標準等のオープンファイルフォーマットであり得る。その結果としてのデータは、デジタル格納デバイス７６に適切なバス（例えば、電気電子学会（ＩＥＥＥ）１３９４標準を用いるバス）を介してストリーミングされ、次いで、デジタル格納デバイス７６上に格納され得る。他の適切なアプローチでは、ＭＰＥＧ−２データストリームまたはファイルの連続は、テレビ配信設備２４（図１）から受信され、格納され得る。
テレビ２６は、映像信号を二次格納デバイス８６から通信パス９４を介して受信し得る。通信パス９４上の映像信号は、二次格納デバイス８６によって生成され得、記録されたデジタル媒体を再生する場合にはデジタル格納デバイス７６によって生成され得、セットトップボックス７２から通過し得、二次格納デバイス８６がユーザテレビ設備９０に含まれていない場合にはテレビ９０にセットトップボックス７２から直接提供され得、または、テレビ９０によって直接受信され得る。正常なテレビ視聴の間、テレビ９０に提供された映像信号は、ユーザがセットトップボックス７２により調整する所望のチャンネルに対応する。映像信号は、さらに、セットトップボックス７２がデジタル格納デバイス７６上に格納された情報を再生するために用いられている場合、セットトップボックス７２によってテレビ９０に提供され得る。
セットトップボックス７２は、メモリ７８を有し得る。メモリ７８は、ランダムアクセスメモリ（ＲＡＭ）、リードオンリーメモリ（ＲＯＭ）、フラッシュメモリ、ハードディスクドライブ、このようなデバイスの組み合わせ等の任意のメモリまたは他の格納デバイスであり得る。これらは、インストラクションおよび／またはデータを格納するのに適している。
セットトップボックス７２は、抽出器８０を有し得る。抽出器８０は、任意のハートウェア、ソフトウェア、これらの組み合わせであり得る。これらは、データをリアルタイムのデータストリーム（例えば、帰線消去期間「ＶＢＩ」抽出器）から抽出するのに適している。所望の場合、類似の構成要素がユーザテレビ装置２６内の異なるハードウェアに集積され得る。
セットトップボックス７２は、テレビ配信設備２４、コンピュータネットワークサーバ２８、他の設備、またはこれらの組み合わせとの通信パス３０および３２を経由したインターフェース７０を介した通信のために通信デバイス７４を含み得る。通信デバイス７４は、一つ以上のモデム（例えば、任意の適切なアナログまたはデジタル標準、セルラーまたはケーブルモデム、ネットワークインターフェースカード（例えば、イーサネット（Ｒ）カード、トークンリングカード等）、または他の適切な通信デバイスであり得る。テレビ９０および／または二次格納デバイス８６は、さらに、所望の場合には、このような適切な通信デバイスを組み込み得る。
図３のユーザテレビ装置２６をさらに一般化した実施形態が図４に示されている。テレビ配信設備２４および他の配信設備からのデータ（例えば、番組記録データ、プログラムガイドデータ等）が、ユーザテレビ装置２６の制御回路１２５よって受信される。例えば、制御回路１２５は、帯域内（ｉｎ−ｂａｎｄ）データを、図３の抽出器８０に示されるようなアナログチャンネルから抽出するのに適切な回路を含み得る。制御回路１２５の機能は、図３のセットトップボックスの構成を用いて提供され得る。あるいは、これらの機能は、最新のテレビ受信器（例えば、デジタルテレビ受信器または高解像テレビ（ＨＤＴＶ）受信器）、パーソナルコンピュータテレビ（ＰＣ／ＴＶ）、または任意の他の適切な構成に組み込まれ得る。所望の場合、このような構成を組み合わせて用いてもよい。
図３のユーザテレビ装置２６は、番組記録のために、二次格納デバイス１５５、デジタル格納デバイス１５０、または任意の適切なこれらの組み合わせを有し得る。二次格納デバイス１５５およびデジタル格納デバイス１５０は、所望の場合、省略してもよい。二次格納デバイス１５５は、任意の適切な種類のアナログまたはデジタル番組格納デバイス（例えば、パーソナルビデオレコーダー「ＰＶＲ」、インテリジェントＶＣＲ等）であり得る。番組記録及び他の特徴は、制御回路１２５によって制御され得る。デジタル格納デバイス１５０は、例えば、書き込み可能な光学格納デバイス（記録可能なＤＶＤディスクを操作可能なＤＶＤプレーヤー等）、磁気格納デバイス（ディスクドライバまたはデジタルテープ等）、または任意の他のデジタル格納デバイスであり得る。

ここで、図８を参照すると、所望の場合、番組に関連するアクションを示すか、ユーザに特定の情報を知らせるために、アイコンが番組リスト６０４内に表示され得る。例えば、記録のために選択された番組が、記録のために選択されたことが示された番組と関連するアイコンと共に番組リスト内の通常の位置に表示され得る。アイコンは、さらに、時間変更情報が番組リストに利用可能であることを示すように、番組リスト６０４内で表示され得る。時間変更は、開始時間、終了時間のいずれか、またはその双方に対する変更であり得る。時間変更は、さらに、時間遅延および／または延長として参照されてもよいが、公称時間（例えば、正常な開始時間）の前あるいは後のいずれかであり得る。公称開始時間及び終了時間は、前もって公表された番組時間である。
実例となる表示画面８００（図８）は、例えば、金曜午後８時における「Ｊｅｔｓ ｖｓ． Ｍｉａｍｉ」の予定された記録のためのリストを示している。番組リスト６０４は、「Ｊｅｔｓ ｖｓ．Ｍｉａｍｉ」番組が記録のために選択されたことを示すように表示されるアイコン８０２を含んでいる。予定された放送である金曜午後８時の「Ｆｒｉｅｎｄｓ」のためのリスト６０８は、時間変更情報が該当する番組に対して利用可能であることを示すように表示されるアイコン８０４を含み得る。所望の場合、番組リスト６０４は、さらに、時間変更情報が記録のために選択された番組に存在するという指標を含み得る。ユーザは、例えば、記録ディレクトリ表示画面（記録およびペンディングの番組選択のリスト）にアクセスすること、時間変更情報を示すペンディングの選択を選択すること、および時間遅延および／または延長情報等の番組についての関連した記録情報を視聴することを選択することによって、時間変更情報を視聴し得る。サンプル記録ディレクトリおよび記録情報表示画面がさらに詳細に図９〜図１１ｃにおいて議論される。選択された番組に対する時間変更情報が、他の手段を介してさらにアクセス可能であり得る。さらに他の実施形態において、番組に対する時間変更情報の利用可能性は、リスト画面上に示されない場合もある。例えば、時間変更情報は、常時、利用可能であってもよく、オンエア後に利用可能であってもよく、アイコン（例えば、アイコン８０４）を表示するガイドなしで利用可能であり得る。他の適切なアプローチは、時間変更情報が存在すること示すため、または、番組が記録されるように選択されたことを示すために用いられ得る。例えば、番組リストは、異なる色、フォント、色合いまたは任意の他の適切な体裁で表示され得る。
番組ガイドは、ユーザに、記録のために選択された番組のディレクトリを視聴する機会を提供し得る。図９は、番組ガイドが、例えばユーザが、メインメニュー表示画面５００（図５）から記録オプション５０６を選択した場合に番組を表示し得る記録ディレクトリ表示画面９００を示している。記録ディレクトリ表示画面９００は、記録のために選択されたプログラムのリストをユーザに提供し得る。例えば、ディレクトリ表示画面９００は、記録されたセレクション９０２のリストおよびペンディングセレクション９０４のリストをユーザに提供し得る。記録されたセレクション９０２のリストは、記録された選択番組のリストであってもよく、ペンディングセレクション９０４のリストは、記録されるように選択されたプログラムのリストであってもよい。図１０の表示画面１０００は、リスト９０４からのペンディングセレクション９０６が選択された場合にユーザに提示され得る。
図１０は、ペンディングセレクション表示画面１０００を示している。表示画面１０００は、記録のために選択されたペンディング番組に関連する種々のオプションをユーザに提供し得る。例えば、表示画面１０００は、記録されるようにペンディングしている番組のリストから番組を取り除くための削除セレクションオプション１００２、選択された番組についての付加情報を受け取るための記録情報オプション１００４、または番組を記録するための設定を特定する記録嗜好オプション１００６を含み得る。付加オプションは、表示画面１０００から利用可能とされ得る。
プログラム記録技術は、開始を遅延するため、または実時間のプログラムの終了を予定された時間から延長するために配信者によって用いられた時間変更をトラッキングする方法を組み込み得る。図１１ａ〜１１ｃは、記録のために選択された番組に関連する情報をユーザに提供し得る記録情報表示画面を示している。ユーザは、記録される予定になっているプログラムについての付加情報を視聴することを選択し得る。例えば、ユーザは、図１０の記録情報オプション１００４選択して、図１１ａの記録情報表示画面１２２５アクセスし得る。表示画面１１２５は、プログラム情報領域１１０２および状態領域１１０４をユーザに提供し得る。領域１１０２は、説明領域１１３、プログラムが放送されているチャンネル用のチャンネル識別子を含むチャンネル領域１１３１、プログラムレーティングを示すためのレーティング領域１１３２を含み得る。さらなる領域は、領域１１０２内に組み込まれ得る。
データは、記録されるべき番組に関連し得る。このようなデータ（例えば、番組リストデータ）は番組で提供され得るか、または任意の適切なアプローチを用いて記録システムに対して番組から分離し得る。関連のデータは、連続データストリーム、周期的データストリーム、クライアント／サーバベースのデータ通信、任意の他の適切なアプローチ、またはそれらの組み合わせを用いて提供され得る。例えば、関連のデータは、時間変更情報を提供し得る。この情報は、領域１１０４に示され得る。領域１１０４は、ユーザに、開示時間、終了時間、ならびにその時間における遅れおよび／または延長に関する情報を提供し得る。領域１１１０および１１１１は、それぞれ番組の開始時間および終了時間を示し得る。領域１１１０は名目上の開始時間を示し、領域１１１１は名目上の終了時間を示し得る。領域１１０４はまた、時間変更情報を示し得る。
領域１１０４はまた、時間変更情報を示し得る。１つの実施形態において、領域１１０４に表示される時間変更情報は、予測される遅れ領域１１０８に予測される時間遅れを含み、および／または予測される延長領域１１０９に予測される時間延長を含み得る。予測される時間遅れおよび時間延長は、番組提供者、データ提供者（例えば、図２のテレビ配信設備２４）、あるいは時間変更の経過の発生または任意の他の適切なアプローチに基づく任意の他の適切な提供者によって提供され得る。以前の時間変更のログが（例えば、格納デバイスを使用して）保持され得る。時間変更を予測する際にログを使用することは、図１４と共にさらに議論される。
別の実施形態において、領域１１０４に表示される時間変更情報は、実際の時間遅れおよび／または延長情報であり得る。図１１ｂは、情報表示画面１１５０を示す。表示画面１１５０における領域１１０４は、実際の遅れ領域１１５２において予測される実際の時間遅れ、および／または実際の延長領域１１５４における実際の時間延長を示し得る。実際の時間遅れおよび実際の時間延長はまた、番組提供者、データ提供者、または任意の他の適切な提供者によって提供され得る。実際の時間遅れは、番組の開始時間に予測される実際の遅れであり得、実際の時間延長は、番組分配者による番組の終了時間に予測される実際の延長であり得る。
いくつかの記録システム（例えば、ＶＣＲ）は、一度に１つの番組を記録することができるのみである。このようなシステムは、その両方の番組が名目上の開始時間および終了時間に基づいて記録され得る隣接する番組を記録可能にし得る。このタイプの記録システムが番組の１つにおける時間変更を経験すると、隣接する記録は重複し、その隣接する番組の一方または両方の記録を切り捨て得る。番組ガイドは、隣接する番組の一方または両方の時間遅れおよび／または延長を調節することで隣接する記録の切捨てを低減することを援助し得る。例えば、番組ガイドは、時間変更の予測の信頼性に基づいて調節する番組記録時間のどれかをベースにし得る。時間変更の信頼性は、予測される時間変更を提供するために収集された多数のサンプルによって決定され得る。このようなシステムにおいて、番組ガイドは、重複する隣接する番組の記録の切り捨てを自動的に低減し得る。
別の実施形態において、２つの隣接する記録が、一度に１つだけの番組を記録し得る記録システムで検出された場合、お好み（ｐｒｅｆｅｒｅｎｃｅ）が第１の隣接する番組に与えられ得る。番組ガイドは第１の番組の終了を維持するために、２つの隣接する番組のうちの２番目の番組を自動的に調節し得る。これは、番組の終了または結末を見損なうユーザではなく、番組の冒頭を見損なうユーザによって好まれ得る。
時間変更情報は利用可能ではないかもしれない。時間変更情報が記録のために選択された番組に利用不可能である場合、記録している関連情報領域１１０４は図１１ｃの表示画面１１７５に示されるように、遅れ領域１１８０に「利用不可能な遅れ情報」を示し、延長領域１１８２に「利用不可能な延長情報」を示し得る。それにもかかわらず、時間遅れおよび／または延長情報が記録のために選択された番組に使用可能である場合、ユーザは時間変更を補償するために記録開始時間および終了時間を調節するように選択し得る。図１１ａ〜１１ｃは、ユーザにお好み記録オプション１１０６を提供する。お好み記録特徴１１０６は、ユーザに予測された時間変更または実際の時間変更を補償する記録時間を調整する機会を提供し得る。図１２ａおよび１２ｂは、例示的な表示画面１２００および１２５０をそれぞれ示す。これらの表示画面は、オプション１１０６が選択された場合にユーザに提供され得る機能を示す。

所望であれば、（例えば、リストを強調表示し、ユーザ入力デバイス１３５上の「記録」キーを押すこと、図７のオーバーレイ７０２から記録オプションを選択すること等で）ユーザが自動的に記録されるべき番組リストを選択すると、単一の表示画面は、お好み記録オプション１００６の可能性を除いて、図１１ａおよび１２ａに示されるオプションおよび情報を含むことを表示し得る。表示画面により、ユーザが番組関連情報、お好み記録、および時間変更情報を一緒に見ることが可能になる。記録されるべき番組のリストは、例えばメインメニュー表示画面を介してアクセスされ得る。
別の実施形態において、記録システムは、時間変更を補償するために自動的に調整するように構成され得る。図１２ｂの表示画面１２５０は、「自動」に設定されたモードオプション１２０２を表示する。このモードが選択されると、オプション１２０４および１２０６に表示される開始時間および終了時間が、予測された時間変更または実際の時間変更を補償するために、記録システムによって自動的に設定され得る。所望であれば、「自動」モードになると、記録開始時間オプション１０２４および記録終了時間オプション１２０６は、これらのオプションがユーザによって現在選択可能でないことを示すように影がかけられ得る。例えば、領域１１０８および１１０９にそれぞれ示される２分の予測された時間遅れおよび延長は、記録システムによって名目上の開始時間および終了時間に自動的に組み入れられ得る。図１２ｂに示すように、番組「Ｔｉｔａｎｉｃ」は、午後７時に名目上の開始時間を有し、午後１０時１５分に名目上の終了時間を有する。予測された遅れおよび「自動」モードの結果として、記録システムは午後７時２分に記録を開始するためにオプション１２０４を自動的に調整し、午後１０時１７分に記録を終了するためにオプション１２０６を自動的に調整し得る。
表示画面１２００および１２５０は、例示の目的で提供されているに過ぎず、これに限定されることはない。さらなる時間変更オプションが表示画面に組み入れられ得る。記録されるために選択される番組に関連した実際の時間および予測される時間が変更になり、自動モードが選択されると、記録システムはどちらの時間変更がより長くてもそれに基づいて開始時間および終了時間を調整し得る。所望である場合、より長い時間変更を選択するのではなく、記録システムは２つのタイプの時間変更情報のうちの特定の１つを常に選択するように構成され得る。

時間変更を伴う以前の番組のログは、将来の番組時間変更を予測するために維持され得る。選択した番組に関する時間変更ログが時間変更の記録を含む場合、番組ガイド配信設備５６は、時間変更ログ情報または時間変更ログ情報に基づく情報をユーザテレビ設備２６に送信し得る。ログは、チャンネル履歴情報、ネットワーク履歴情報、または番組時間変更をモニタリングする際の任意の他の適切な基準を使用し得る。図１４ａは、時間変更を予測に関する例示的な工程のフローチャートである。工程１４０２では、変更された時間を伴う以前の番組のログが維持され、番組ガイドサーバ（例えば、図２の番組ガイドサーバ５０）、またはローカルメモリ（例えば、メモリ７８またはデジタル格納デバイス７６）に格納され得る。ユーザが番組を記録することを選択すると、番組ガイドサーバは工程１４０４で格納デバイス（例えば、格納デバイス５４）をポーリングし、選択された番組に関連する任意のログエントリを探す。番組選択と連携するまたは関連するログエントリがない場合、ガイドは工程１４０６において時間変更を予測し得ない。例えば、テキスト「使用不可能な遅延情報」およびテキスト「使用不可能な延長情報」が図１１ｃの領域１１８０および１１８２に表示され得る。格納されたログエントリが工程１４０４でユーザの番組選択に対応または関連すると、ログからの時間変更情報を使用して、工程１４０８で時間遅れおよび／または延長を予測し得る。ユーザの番組選択は、チャンネル、ネットワーク、実際の番組、または全ての任意の他の使用可能なアプローチによって格納されたログエントリに関連し得る。他の適切な技術がまた、例えば、番組のタイプによる放送時間中のバリエーションに基づいた統計的分析を用いて、使用されてもよい。
図１４ｂは、記録システムが予想された時間変更を補償し得る方法を示す例示的な工程のフローチャートである。工程１４０９では、時間変更が予測され得る。工程１４０９は、予測された時間変更が表示され得るサブ工程１４１０を含み得る。例えば、ユーザが双方向番組ガイドにアクセスして、表示画面（例えば、図１１ｂの表示画面１１５０）を表示し得る場合である。工程１４１２では、記録システムは、記録モードが時間変更を自動的に補償するように設定されているかを見るようにチェックし得る。例えば、ユーザは図１２ａおよび１２ｂのオプション１２０２によってオプションのモードを選択し得る。記録システムが、工程１４１４において自動に設定されていない場合、ユーザは記録設定を調整する機会を提供され得る。例えば、ユーザは、図１２ａのオプション１２０４で開始時間を調整し、オプション１２０６で終了時間を調整し得る。動作モードが時間変更に自動的に応答するように設定されると、計画された記録時間は、工程１４１６において、番組の開始時間および終了時間の時間変更を補償するように自動的に調整され得る。記録開始時間および終了時間が時間遅れおよび／または延長を補償するように調整されると、番組は工程１４１８で調整された時間で記録され得る。
図１４ｃは、時間変更が予測される場合に記録システムが隣接する記録を補償し得る方法を示す例示的な工程のフローチャートである。工程１４３０では、一度に１つの番組のみを記録し得る記録システム（例えば、ＶＣＲ）が、２つの番組を記録するように設定され得る。ここで、２つの番組は、互いに時間が隣接している。例えば、第１の番組（本明細書中以後、計画された番組）は、あるチャンネルで午後１２時から午後１時の間に記録されるように設定され得、隣接する番組は別のチャンネルで午後１時から午後１時３０分まで記録されるように設定され得る。工程１４３２では、計画された番組は、時間変更を経験し得る。時間変更がこのタイプの記録システムで発生すると、工程１４３４でチェックが実施され、記録されるべき隣接する番組が存在するかを調査し得る。これにより、記録システムは番組記録の重複を検出し、従って番組の記録の切捨てを最小化するように補償することを試みることが可能となる。隣接する番組記録が存在しない場合、工程１４３６において、記録システムは計画された番組のための記録開始時間および終了時間を調整し、予測された時間変更を補償し得る。
工程１４３４が記録されるべき隣接する番組を検出すると、計画された番組の予測された時間変更の信頼度が決定され得る。計画された番組の信頼度、および隣接する番組の信頼度が、工程１４３８で比較される。例えば、収集された以前の時間変更のサンプル数を見積もることで信頼度が決定され得る。記録システムは、計画された番組の予測された時間変更を提供するために収集されたサンプルが隣接する番組と比較した場合にあまり信頼性がないかもしれないと決定し得る。これは、記録システムに、計画された番組の予測された時間変更に低い信頼度を割り当てるように記録システムに信号を送り得る。信頼度が低いと判断されると、記録システムは、記録されるべきより信頼性のある隣接する番組の切捨てを最小化することを試みるために、工程１４４４で、計画された番組の記録時間を調節し得る。それにもかかわらず、隣接する番組の記録と比較した場合に計画された番組の記録が高いという信頼度が下されると、記録システムは、計画された番組の記録の切捨てを低減するために、工程１４４２で、隣接する番組の記録時間を調節し得る。他の適切な方法を、どの隣接する記録を調節し得るかを決定するために使用してもよい。
記録システムのさらに別の実施形態において、リアルタイムのデータストリームがモニタリングされ得る。図１５は、そのような実施形態の例示のフローチャートである。工程１５０２では、ユーザには記録用の番組を選択する機会が提供され得る。工程１５０４では、選択された番組は、（例えば、図８のアイコン８０２で示されるように）記録のためにキューされ得る。番組がキューされると、リアルタイムのデータストリームが工程１５０６で記録システムによってモニタリングされ得る。工程１５０８では、エキストラクタ（例えば、図３のセットトップボックス７２に集約されるエキストラクタ８０）が、番組がまさに開始または終了しようとしているキューを求める入来のデータストリームを解読し得る。解読されたデータストリームが、番組が開始または終了をすることを示すと、記録システムは、工程１５１２で、それぞれ記録の開始または停止するために信号を送り得る。そうでない場合は、記録システムは、リアルタイムのデータストリームをモニタリングすることを継続し得る。
予測された時間遅れおよび／または時間延長あるいは実際の時間遅れおよび／または時間延長の自動的またはマニュアルの調整を提供するための簡略化されたシステムの図を図１６に示す。このシステムは、ユーザテレビ設備１６０２（例えば、図１〜４に関連する上記のユーザテレビ設備）を含み得る。このシステムは、メディア（例えば、テレビ番組、ラジオ、ビデオオンデマンド、ペイパービュー、ミュージックオンデマンドなど）をユーザテレビ設備１６０２に配信する配信設備であり得るメディアプロバイダ１６０４を含み得る。配信されるメディアは、リアルタイムメディアであってもよいし、特定のテレビ番組の生放送（例えば、午後１０時の「Ｍａｒｙｌａｎｄ対Ｄｕｋｅ」のバスケットボールの試合の生放送）のような生中継のリアルタイムメディアであってもよいし、音楽の録音が放送されるラジオ局放送のリスニング用の特定の音楽記録のようなリアルタイムのメディアであってもよい。
上記のように、ユーザはやってくるメディアイベント（例えば、番組、歌など）を視聴することが可能になり、メディアイベントが（例えば、メディアイベントのための）計画に基づいて自動的に記録されるように選択することが可能になる。例えば、メディアプロバイダ１６０４は、テレビ配信設備、ラジオ局、ネットワーク放送センター、コンピュータネットワークなど、またはこのようなものの複数の組み合わせであり得る。データプロバイダ１６０６は、これらの中でとりわけ、メディアイベント（例えば、ユーザのメディアプロバイダに示すために計画されたメディアイベント）に関連する時間変更情報のプロバイダであり得る。
上記のように、時間変更情報は、放送することが計画された今後のまたは現在のメディアイベントの予測された時間変更であってもよいし、実際の時間変更であってもよい。データプロバイダ１６０６は、テレビ配信設備、ラジオ局、コンピュータサーバ、コンピュータネットワーク、インターネット等、またはそれらの組み合わせであ得る。データをユーザテレビ設備１６０２に提供する技術（例えば、ＶＢＩを用いる）が、上述される。所望であれば、メディアプロバイダ１６０４およびデータプロバイダ１６０６は、単一の設備１６０８（例えば、テレビ視聴者に生で見せるための（記録済みのまたは生の）番組を配信し、中でも番組の時間変更情報を提供するデータを配信するテレビ配信設備）であり得る。データプロバイダ１６０６は、ユーザテレビ設備１６０２で使用するリアルタイムデータストリームを配信し得る（例えば、番組または番組編成のためのデータが、視聴者への番組または番組編成の配信にリアルタイムで関連して配信され得る）。
このように、番組の記録時の切捨てを低減するためのシステムおよび方法が提供される。
本発明は、記載された実施形態以外でも実施することができ、記載の実施形態は例示の目的であってこれらには限定されず、本発明は特許請求の範囲によってのみ限定されることを当業者は理解する。

  1. 番組が記録されるときにカットオフを低減する記録システムにおける使用のための方法であって、
    該方法は、
    予定された番組についての時間変更情報を提供することと、
    該時間変更情報に基づいた時間変更を補償するように該番組を記録することと
    を包含する、方法。
