Abstract

1,150,697. Zone-melting. SIEMENS A.G. 10 April, 1968 [21 April, 1967], No. 17349/68. Heading B1S A molten zone is formed between a thin seed and a tapered portion of a thick rod of silicon and passed through the rod by means of a surroundings induction coil, the coil being increased in diameter as it passes through the tapered portion of the rod. The rod may have a diameter of 30-50 mm. The cross-sectional area of the seed may be up to one-tenth that of the rod. The coil may be of berylliumcopper alloy. As shown, the ends of a coil 1, which is in the form of an alpha, are connected in insulated manner to arms 6a and 6b of rigid members 4, which are pivoted at 5 and have free end 8a and 8b, which are pressed apart by the tapered portion of a screw-threaded pin 9 against the action of a spring 13.
