It contains a transport roller common to all chambers and a number of adjustable pressure rollers corresponding to the number of chambers. Level monitoring devices arranged in the chambers give a signal when the amount of material in the relevant chamber falls below a predetermined value. In this case, the associated pressure roller is lowered relative to the driven transport roller, so that the web of material is initially no longer conveyed from the under-loaded chamber into the next chamber. If this chamber reaches its normal level in this way, the pressure roller is raised and the further transport of the web into the next chamber is resumed.
