Description
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von im wesentlichen reinem m-Isopropylphenol durch
Behandlung eines Gemisches von Isopropylphenolisomeren bzw. eines Gemisches aus Phenol und einem IsonrnnyligninywTiittel
mit rinw Säure und einiül Le»'!S-Säurefluorid,
bei dem die Ausgangsgemische mit einem Oberschuß von wasserfreier Fluorwasserstoffsäure und
einem Lewis-Säurefluorid behandelt werden.
Resorcin (m-Dihydroxybenzol) ist ein chemisch technisches
Produkt von sehr großer Bedeutung. Seine Herstellung erfolgt gewöhnlich durch Alkalischmelze bei
hoher Temperatur (etwa 300°C) von m-Benzoldisulfonsäure.
Aus chemischen Gründen sowie aus Gründen der Umweltverunreinigung ist dieses Verfahren nachteilig.
Das Hock*sche Verfahren zur Herstellung von Phenol wurde auf die Herstellung von Resorcin über m-Diisopropyibenzoklihydroperoxid
ausgedehnt Die Anwesenheit von zwei Hydroperoxidgruppen, die gleichzeitig
in dem als Zwischenprodukt gebildeten Dihydroperoxid vorhanden sind, kann jedoch zur Bildung einer erhöhten
Zahl von Nebenprodukten führen, und dies umso mehr, als die Geschwindigkeit der Reaktion wesentlich geringer
ist als im Falle von Cumolhydroperoxid Es besteht ein praktisches Bedürfnis für andere leicht verfügbare
Ausgangsmaterialien, die zur Herstellung von Resorcin verwendet werden können.
Die Herstellung von m-Isopropylphenol durch Alkylierung, durch Transalkylierung bzw. durch Isomerisierung
in Gegenwart stark saurer Katalysatoren ist aus dem Stand der Technik bekannt Derartige Synthesen
sind in US-PS 41 03 096, GB-PS 10 33 218, sowie in Houben-Weyl,
Methoden der organischen Chemie, 4. Auflage, Band WlC, 1976, Seite 1016 und 1076-77, beschrieben.
Bei den bekannten Verfahren zur Herstellung von m-Isopropylphenol entstehen bei der Isopropylierung
von Phenol Isomerengemische, in denen die o- und p-Isomeren überwiegen. Durch anschließende säurekatalysierte
Isomerisierung unter Anwendung üblicher Friedel-Crafts-Bedingungen
in der Flüssigphase mit Katalysatoren wie AlClj, BF3, oder über feste Katalysatoren
wie polymeren perfluorierten Harzsulfonsäuren und Perfluordekansulfonsäure wird eine Isomerenverteilung
erhalten, in der etwa 15% o-Isomere, 65% m-Isomere
und 20% p-lsomere vorliegen. Dies stellt die thermodynamische
Gleichgewichtszusammensetzung dar, erfordert jedoch noch eine schwierig zu erreichende
und kostspielige Trennung der Isomeren, die aufgrund der sehr dicht beieinander liegenden Siedepunkte der
Isomeren im allgemeinen nicht durch eine einfache Destillation allein erzielbar ist
praktisch freien m-Isopropylphenol war jedoch bisher nicht möglich, und Gemische der Isomeren sind äußerst
schwierig und kostspielig zu trennen. Aufgabe der vorliegenden Erfindung ist, ein derartiges Verfahren zu entwickeln.
Diese Aufgabe wird gelöst durch das Verfahren nach dem Anspruch.
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist ein verbessertes, wirksames
Verfahren zur Herstellung von im wesentlichen
ίο reinem m-Isopropylphenol durch Behandlung eines Gemisches
von Isopropylphenolisomeren bzw. eines Gemisches aus Phenol und einem Isopropylierungsmittel
mit einer Saure und einem Lewis-Säurefluorid. Es ist
dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Ausgangsgemi-
sehe mit einem Oberschuß von wasserfreier Fluorwasserstoffsäure
und einem Lewis-Säurefluorid behandelt
Es wurde nämlich gefunden, daß, wenn man die Isopropylphenole (o- und p-Isomere oder benebige Isomerengemische) mit einem Oberschuß von wasserfreier Fluorwasserstoffsäure und einem Lewis-Säurefluorid, Z1B, Bortrifluorid, Phosphorpsntafluorsd, Antirnenpsntafluorid, Arsenpentafhiorid, Tantalpentafluorid oder Niobpentafluorid, bei einer Temperatur zwischen —50" und +200"C, vorzugsweise zwischen 75" und 130" C behandelt, eine praktisch vollständige Umwandlung in das m-Isomere stattfindet und von einer gewissen Disproportionierung zu Phenol und Diisopropylphenolen begleitet ist Der Grad der Disproportionierung kann erheblich verringert werden, wenn die Di- oder Triisopropylphenole in das Reaktionsgemisch im Kreislauf zurückgeführt werden, wobei eine Transisopropylierung erfolgt und in dieser Weise das Gleichgewicht in Richtung zum gewünschten m-Isopropylphenol verschoben wird. Tatsächlich ist bei Umsetzung von Phenol unter den übersauren Reaktionsbedingungen mit Dioder Triisopropylphenolen m-Isopropylphenol das einzige erhaltene isomere Monoalkylierungsprodukt Wenn im Gegensatz hierzu die Transalkylierung unter üblichen Friedel-Crafts-Bedingungen durchgeführt wird, enthalten die Produkte alle drei isomeren Isopro· pylphenole, wobei die Menge des m-Isomeren 40 bis 65% beträgt
Es wurde nämlich gefunden, daß, wenn man die Isopropylphenole (o- und p-Isomere oder benebige Isomerengemische) mit einem Oberschuß von wasserfreier Fluorwasserstoffsäure und einem Lewis-Säurefluorid, Z1B, Bortrifluorid, Phosphorpsntafluorsd, Antirnenpsntafluorid, Arsenpentafhiorid, Tantalpentafluorid oder Niobpentafluorid, bei einer Temperatur zwischen —50" und +200"C, vorzugsweise zwischen 75" und 130" C behandelt, eine praktisch vollständige Umwandlung in das m-Isomere stattfindet und von einer gewissen Disproportionierung zu Phenol und Diisopropylphenolen begleitet ist Der Grad der Disproportionierung kann erheblich verringert werden, wenn die Di- oder Triisopropylphenole in das Reaktionsgemisch im Kreislauf zurückgeführt werden, wobei eine Transisopropylierung erfolgt und in dieser Weise das Gleichgewicht in Richtung zum gewünschten m-Isopropylphenol verschoben wird. Tatsächlich ist bei Umsetzung von Phenol unter den übersauren Reaktionsbedingungen mit Dioder Triisopropylphenolen m-Isopropylphenol das einzige erhaltene isomere Monoalkylierungsprodukt Wenn im Gegensatz hierzu die Transalkylierung unter üblichen Friedel-Crafts-Bedingungen durchgeführt wird, enthalten die Produkte alle drei isomeren Isopro· pylphenole, wobei die Menge des m-Isomeren 40 bis 65% beträgt
Supersäuresysteme bilden protonierte Komplexe,
d h. Areniumionen, mit Isopropylphenolen, wobei der vom m-Isomeren abgeleitete Komplex der stabilste ist
Die Supersäuresysteme pflegen somit das m-lsomere selektiv zu extrahieren und eine selektive Umwandlung
aller Isomeren in das m-Produkt zu ermöglichen. Isomerisierungen
dieser Art waren bisher nur für Methylbenzole bekannt (McCaulay und Lien, J. Amer. Chem. Soc,
74, (1952), 6246), aber nicht für die Isopropylbenzole
oder die Alkylphenole (einschließlich der Isopropylphenole).
Während die Methylbenzole intramolekular isomerisieren,
pflegen die Isopropylbenzole durch intermolekulare Prozesse isomerisiert zu werden. Es ist somit
keine Extrapolation von Methylbenzolen zu Isopropyibenzolen oder Isopropylphenolen möglich, von denen
ebenfalls erwartet wird, daß sie in hohem Maße disproportionieren.
Die Isopropylierung von Phenol mit Propylen, Isop ropy !halogeniden (insbesondere dem Fluorid, Bromid
und Chlorid) oder Isopropylaikohol kann auch in den vorstehend genannten übersauren Systemen durchgeführt
werden und führt zur ausschließlichen Bildung von m-Isopropylphenol.
m-Isopropylphenol kann auch hergestellt werden, indem die Isopropylierung von Phenol durch Transalkylierung
mit Di- oder Triisopropylbenzolen oder Di- und
Triisopropylphenolen in den gleichen Supersäuresystemen
durchgeführt wird.
Das im wesentlichen reine m-Isopropylphenol kann
insbesondere zur Herstellung von Resorcin verwendet werden, wobei man über m-Isopropylphenolhydroperoxid
in einer Form, in der die phenolische Hydroxylgruppe durch eine geeignete Äther- oder Estergruppe (ζ. Β.
einen Trimethylsilylrest, Trifluormethansulfonyirest
oder Trifluoracetylrest) geschützt ist, vorgeht und nach bekannten Verfahren beispielsweise durch Oxydation
von geschützten Estern oder Äthern von m-Isopropylpheno!
in der Flüssigphase mit Hilfe von Sauerstoff oder Luft sauber und einwandfrei in hoher Ausbeute (etwa
90%) mit Hilfe seiner Hock'schen Reaktion in Resorcin umwandelt Als Katalysator dafür dient eine Supensäu- .-5
re, z.B. eine perfluorierte Sulfonsäure mit 1 bis 18C-Atomen,
oder eine perfluorierte Harzsulfonsäure.
Die Erfindung wird durch die folgenden Beispiele weiter erläutert
20 Beispiel 1
14 g (0,1 Mol) eines Gemisches von Isopropylphenolen,
das 70% des o-lsomeren und 30% dec p-Isomeren
enthielt, werden in 150 ml wasserfreier Fluorwasserstoffsäure gelöst Die Lösung wird in einen Autoklaven
aus nichtrostendem Stahl gegeben. Das Gemisch vrird mit Bortrifluorid gesättigt und dann 6 Stunden auf
1100C erhitzt.
Nach Entspannung auf Normaldruck und Entfernung der Fluorwasserstoffsäure und des Bortrifluorids durch
Distillation wii J das Gemisch mit Eiswasser gewaschen,
neutralisiert, erneut gewaschen, getrocknet und destilliert
Eine Analyse durch Gas-FIüssigkeits-Chromatographie ergibt, daß die Fraktion <V.r Isopropylphenole,
die 61% des Produkts ausmacht, aus dem praktisch reinen (99%) rn-Isomeren besteht Das Phenol und die
durch Disproportionierung gebildeten Diisopropylplienole
stellen den Rest des Produkts dar.

9,4 g (0,1 Mol) Phenol und 18 g (0,05 Mol) Düsopropylphenole
werden in 150 ml wasserfreier Fluorwasserstoffsäure bei 200C gelöst. Das Gemisch wird in einen
Autoklaven aus nichtrostendem Stahl mit einem Fassungsvermögen von 500 ml überführt. Die Lösung wird
mit Bortrifluorid gesättigt und dann 4 Stunden aiuf 100° C erhitzt. Nach Aufarbeitung auf die in Beispiel 1
beschreibene Weise werden 41 % m-Isopropylphenol einer
Reinheit von 99% erhalten.
9,4 g (0,1 Mol) Phenol werden in 100 ml wasserfreier Fluorwasserstoffsäure gelöst. Während die Lösung bei
etwa 0°C gehalten wird, werden 2 g (0,05 Mol) Propylen zugesetzt, worauf weitere 15 Minuten gerührt wird. Das
Reaktionsgemisch wird anschließend mit Bortrifluorid gesättigt und 30 Minuten auf 1000C erhitzt Nach der
Aufarbeitung werden 59% Isopropylphenole, die 99% m-lsomeres enthalten, sowie 31% Phenol und eine geringe
Menge Diisopropylphenole erhalten.
Claims (1)
- Patentanspruch:Verfahren zur Herstellung von im wesentlichen reinem m-Isopropylphenol durch Behandlung eines Gemisches von Isopropylphenolisomeren bzw. eines Gemisches aus Phenol und einem Isopropylierungsmittel mit einer Saure und einem Lewis-Säurefluorid, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Ausgangsgemische mit einem Oberschuß von wasserfreier Fluorwasserstoffsäure und einem Lewis-Säurefluorid behandelt
