Abstract
A method for rearranging dimethylphenol comprises contacting the dimethylphenol with aluminium chloride or bromide whilst a gaseous hydrogen halide is fed through the mixture from an external source, the contacting being effected at an elevated temperature such that disproportionation of the dimethylphenol occurs with the production of a trimethylphenol. In a further method a dimethylphenol other than 3,5-dimethylphenol is maintained in contact with aluminium chloride or aluminium bromide whilst a gaseous hydrogen halide is fed through the mixture from an external source, the contacting being effected at an elevated temperature such that the initial dimethylphenol undergoes rearrangement with the production of 3,5-dimethyl phenol and 2,3,5-trimethylphenol. Examples are furnished in which the products are 3,5-dimethyl and 2,3,5-trimethyl phenols, m-cresol and phenol.
