Abstract

1,150,209. Methylation of phenol. COALITE & CHEMICAL PRODUCTS Ltd. 24 Nov., 1966, No. 52718/66. Heading C2C. Phenol is monomethylated by contacting a gaseous mixture of phenol and methanol with a zeolite, as catalyst, at a temperature in the range 250-350‹ C. for 5-75 sees. Preferably, the catalyst is a synthetic zeolite. The products are cresols, mainly o-cresol, and small amounts of xylenols.
