1284285 Selective methylation of phenols SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 3 Oct 1969 [5 Oct 1968 7 Oct 1968 31 Oct 1968] 48815/69 Heading C2C A process for the ortho-methylation of a phenol of formula wherein each of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 which may be the same or different, represents a hydrogen atom or a (C 1-6 ) saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group, comprises reacting the phenol with methanol in a gas phase at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst which is (1) component (a) cerium oxide or a mixture of oxides of rare earth elements composed mainly of cerium oxide, in combination with, as component (b) at least one oxide which is titanium oxide, tin oxide, antimony oxide or bismuth oxide; (2) a mixture of oxides comprising (a) and magnesium oxide, or (3) a mixture of oxides comprising (a), (b) and magnesium oxide.
