Abstract
PROCEDE DE PREPARATION DU META-ISOPROPYLPHENOL DANS UN ETAT DE GRANDE PURETE ISOMERIQUE PAR ALKYLATION DU PHENOL A L'AIDE D'UN AGENT DE PROPYLATION, CARACTERISE EN CE QUE LES PRODUITS DE REACTION SONT ISOMERISES EN DERIVE META AU MOYEN D'UN CATALYSEUR SUPER-ACIDE CONSTITUE D'UN MELANGE D'ACIDE FLUORHYDRIQUE ANHYDRE OU D'UN ACIDE ALCANESULFONIQUE PERFLUORE, AYANT DE UN A SIX ATOMES DE CARBONE, AVEC UN FLUORURE D'ACIDE DE LEWIS. SELON UNE VARIANTE, LE CATALYSEUR SUPERACIDE SERT EGALEMENT DE CATALYSEUR D'ALKYLATION DU PHENOL.
Description
La présente invention concerne un procédé de pré-
paration du méta-isopropylphénol pratiquement pur par alkyla-
tion du phénol à l'aide d'un agent de propylation, les pro-
duits de réaction étant isomérisés en dérivé méta au moyen d'un catalyseur super-acide. Le méta-isopropylphénol est un produit industriel, nécessaire notamment à la préparation du résorcinol selon le procédé décrit dans la demande de brevet français no 81 04?04
au nom de la demanderesse. I1 est indispensable dans ce procé-
dé que la pureté isomérique du méta-isopropylphénol soit très grande. Or les procédés connus de préparation de ce composé consistent on une isopropylation du phénol, qui donne des mélanges d'isomères, dans lesquels prédominent les dérivés ortho- et para-. L'isomérisation ultérieure de ces mélanges
an catalyse acide, dans les conditions habituelles de la ré-
action de FRIEDEL-CRAFTS, avec des catalyseurs tels que AlC13, BF3, etc. ou bien sur des catalyseurs solides, tels que le ONAFION-H# (forme acide de la résine sulfonique perfluorée
de la Société du PONT de NEMOURS) ou l'acide perfluorodécane-
sulfonique, donne une répartition des isomères comprenant environ 15 % d'isomère ortho, 65 % d'isomère-méta et 20 % d'isomère para, ce qui représente la composition à l'équilibre
thermodynamique, mais nécessite encore une séparation des iso-
mères difficile à réaliser et coteuse, car, enraison des points d'ébullition très rapprochés des isomères, elle ne peut
pas être réalisée par une simple distillation seule.
Il a maintenant été découvert que lorsqu'on traite
les isopropylphénols (isomères ortho et para ou mélange quel-
conqua d'isomères) par un excès d'acide fluorhydrique anhydre ou d'un acide alcanesulfonique perfluoré ayant de 1 à 6 atomes
de carbone, avec un fluorure d'acide de Lewis, tel que ls tri-
fluorure de bore, le pentafluorure de phosphore, le penta-
fluorure d'antimoine, le pentafluorure d'arsenic, le penta-
fluorure de tantale, le pentafluorure de niobium, etc..., à
une température comprise entre - 50 et + 2001C, de préféren-
ce entre 75 et 130 C, une transformation pratiquement complète
en isomère méta a lieu et s'accompagne d'une certaine dismu-
tation en phénol et en diisopropylphénol. On peut réduire de manière appréciable le degré de dismutation en recyclant les di- ou les triisopropylphénols dans le mélange réactionnel, en effectuant une transisopropylation et en déplaçant ainsi les équilibres vers la formation du méta-isopropylphénol
voulu. En effet, quand on fait réagir le phénol dans les con-
ditions de réaction superacides avec des di- ou des tri-isopro-
pylphénols, le seul monoalkylate isomère obtenu est le méta-
isop:opylphénol, Par contre, si l'on réalise la transalkyla-
tion dans les conditions habituelles de la réaction de FRIEDEL-CRAFTS, les produits contiennent les trois isomères de l'isopropylphénol, la proportion de l'isomères méta étant
de 40 à 65 %.
Les compositions de superacides-forment des com-
plexes protonés, c'est-à-dire des ions arînium, avec les isopropylphénols, et c'est celui qui dérive de l'isomère méta
qui est le plus stable. Ainsi, les compositions de super-
acides tendent à extraire sélectivement l'isomère méta et à permettre une transformation sélective de tous les isomères
en l'isomère méta.
De telles isomérisations étaient déjà connues pour
les méthylbenzènes [McCAULAY et LIEN, J. Am. Chem-. Sac.? 749-
6246 (1952], mais pas pour les isopropylbenzènes ou les.-
alkylphénols (y compris les isopropylphénols). Alors que les méthylbenzènes s'isomérisent intra-moléculairement, les isopropylbenzènes tendent à s'isomériser par des processus
intermoléculaires. Aussi aucune extrapolation n'est-elle pos-
sible des méthylbenzènes aux isopropylbenz&nes ou aux isopro-
pylphénols, dont on s'attend également à ce qu'ils se dismu-
tent de façon appréciable.: L'isopropylation du phénol par le propylène, les halogénures d'isopropyle (en particulier le fluorure, le
chlorure et le bromure) ou l'alcool isopropylique peut éga-
lement être réalisée dans les systèmes super-acides sus-
mentionnés, et conduit à la formation exclusive du méta-
isopropylphénol. On peut également obtenir le méta-isopropylphénoi en réalisant l'isopropylation du phénol par transalkylation
avec des di- ou des tri-isopropylbenzènes ou avec des di-
ou des tri-isopropylphénols, dans les mêmes systèmes super-
acides.
Les exemples suivants, donnés à titre non limita-
tif, illustrent le champ d'application de l'invention.
EXEMPLE 1
On dissout 14 g (0,1 mole) d'un mélange d'iso-
propylphénols contenant 70 % d'isomère ortho et 30 % d'isomère para dans 150 ml d'acide fluorhydrique anhydre, on place la solution dans un autoclave en acier inoxydable, on sature le mélange de trifluorure de bore, puis on chauffe
à 1100C pendant 6 heures.
Après avoir rétabli la pression normale et avoir
éliminé par distillation l'acide fluorhydrique et le tri-
fluorure de bore, on lave le mélange avec de l'eau glacée, on le neutralise, on le lave à nouveau, on le sèche et on le distille. Une analyse chromatographique gaz-liquide montre que la fraction isopropylphénols, qui représente 61 % du produit, est constituée d'isomère méta pratiquement pur (99 %). Le phénol et les diisopropylphénols, formés par
dismutation, représentent le reste du produit.
EXEMPLE 2
On dissout 9,4 g (0,1 mole) de phénol et 18 g (0,05 mole) de diisopropylphénols dans 150 ml d'acide fluorhydrique anhydre, à 20 C puis on transfère le mélange
dans un autoclave en acier inoxydable de 500 ml de capacité.
On sature la solution de trifluorure de bore puis on la chauffe à 100 C pendant 4 heures. Apres élaboration comme dans l'exemple 5, on obtient 41 % de méta-isopropylphénol
de pureté 99 %.
EXEMPLE 3
On dissout 9,4 g (0,1 mole) de phénol dans 100 ml d'acide fluorhydrique anhydre, et, tout en maintenant la solution à O0 C environ, on introduit 2 g (0,05 mole) de
propylène, et on continue l'agitation pendant 15 minutes.
On sature ensuite le mélange réactionnel de trifluorure de bore et on le chauffe à 1O0 C pendant 30 minutes. Après élaboration, on obtient 59 % d'isopropylphénols, contenant 99 % d'isomère méta ainsi que 31 % de phénol et un peu de diisopropylphénols.
Claims (4)
1 - Procédé de préparation de méta-isopropylphénol pratique-
ment pur par alkylation du phénol à l'aide d'un agent de propylation, caractérisé en ce que les produits de réaction sont isomérisés en dérivé méta au moyen d'un catalyseur super- acide constitué d'un mélange d'acide fluorhydrique anhydre ou d'un acide alcanesulfonique perfluoré, ayant de un à six
atomes de carbone, avec un fluorure d'acide de Lewis.
2 - Procédé selon la revendication 1, caractérisé an ce que le
fluorure d'acide de Lewis est le trifluorure de bore, le penta-
fluorure de phosphore, le pentefluorure d'arsenic, le penta-
fluorure d'antimoine, le pentafluorure de tantale ou le
pentafluorure de niobium.
3 - Procédé selon l'une des revendications 1 ou 2, caractérisé
en ce que le traitement par le catalyseur superacide est ré-
alisé à une température comprise entre 50 et 250 C environ.
4 - Procédé selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 3,
caractérisé en ce que l'agent de propylation est le propylâne, un halogénure d'isopropyle, l'alcool isopropylique, le di- ou
le tri-isopropylbenzène, le di- ou le tri-isopropylphénol.
- Procédé selon l'une quelconque des revendications 1 à 4,
caractérisé en ce que le catalyseur superacide sert également
de catalyseur d'alkylation du phénol.
