技术领域
本发明涉及一种电压补偿电路,特别是用于电致发光显示器中的电压补偿电路。
背景技术
电致发光(EL)显示器,譬如主动矩阵有机发光二极管(active matrix organiclight emitting diode,AMOLED)显示器,可包含一像素阵列。该些像素中的每一像素可包含一EL装置、用以传输含有与亮度相关的信息的一开关晶体管、以及用以驱动该EL装置使其根据该数据而发光的一驱动晶体管。虽然此种EL显示器具备电力消耗较低的优点,但半导体制备过程中的制程因素却可能使多个像素间的显示不均匀。因此,相关领域需要一种能够解决上述问题的电路。
发明内容
本发明实施例提出一种电致发光(EL)显示器的电压补偿电路,包含一子像素单元、一阻抗负载及一开关。该子像素单元包含一电致发光(EL)装置、一第一电容器,耦接于该EL装置,用以储存与该EL装置相关的数据、以及一晶体管,包含一栅极,耦接至该第一电容器的一第一端,以及一终端,耦接至该电容器的一第二端。该阻抗负载耦接于该子像素单元,包含一第二电容器,其电容值高于该第一电容器的电容值。该开关选择性地耦接于该阻抗负载或断开,将该子像素单元耦接至相应的一电流槽或与该电流槽断开。
于一实施例中,该子像素单元还包含另一晶体管,用以在第一阶段中重置位于晶体管栅极的电压位准。
于另一实施例中,该另一晶体管还用以于第二阶段中接收与该EL装置相关的数据。
于又一实施例中,该第二电容器用以在该第二阶段中,保持该晶体管的该终端的电压位准,该电压位准等于该终端在该第一阶段中的电压位准。
于又另一实施例中,该子像素单元还包含又一晶体管,分别耦接于该晶体管与一供应电压,该又一晶体管用以于第三阶段中使一电流流经EL装置。
于又一实施例中,该第二电容器用以在该第三阶段中,保持该晶体管的该栅极与该终端之间的电压差异,该电压差异等于其于该第二阶段中的电压差异。
于一实施例中,该电流的强度与与晶体管的阈值电压无关。
于另一实施例中,该子像素单元还包含又一晶体管,分别耦接于该晶体管与该阻抗负载,用以在第一阶段中于该晶体管的该终端建立和该晶体管的阈值电压相关联的一补偿电压。
本发明某些实施例提出一种电致发光(EL)装置,其包含多个像素单元,以及一电压补偿电路。该等像素单元呈矩阵排列,且每一该像素单元包含多个子像素单元。该电路包含该等子像素单元、一阻抗负载及一开关。每一该子像素单元包含一电致发光(EL)装置、一第一电容器,耦接于该EL装置,用以储存与该EL装置相关的数据、以及一晶体管,包含一栅极,耦接至该第一电容器的一第一端,以及一终端,耦接至该电容器的一第二端耦接。该阻抗负载,耦接于该子像素单元,包含一第二电容器,其电容值高于该第一电容器的电容值。该开关,选择性地耦接于该阻抗负载或断开,将该子像素单元耦接至相应的一电流槽或与该电流槽断开。
本发明的实施例亦提供一种在电致发光(EL)显示器中进行电压补偿的方法,该EL显示器包含一像素单元阵列,每一像素单元包含一晶体管与一第一电容器。该方法包含:提供一开关,以通过与一像素单元相关联的一阻抗负载将该像素单元其中的一选择性地连接至一电流槽;将该晶体管栅极的电压位准重置为参考电压;建立与在该晶体管的一终端的晶体管的阈值电压相关联的补偿电压;将与该EL装置相关的数据储存于该第一电容器中并利用该阻抗负载中的一第二电容器保持位于一终端的电压位准;以及使一电流通过该晶体管流经一EL装置,该电流的强度与该晶体管的阈值电压无关。

图1为根据一实施例的显示器10的区块图。显示器10可包含一电致发光(EL)显示器,譬如主动矩阵有机发光二极管(AMOLED)显示器。
参照图1,显示器10包含主动区域12、栅极驱动器14及源极驱动器15。主动区域12包含一像素单元阵列,举例来说,可将多个像素单元P排列成N×M的矩阵,其中N、M分别为正整数。栅极驱动器14经由N条扫描线将多个控制信号提供给N列像素单元,例如第一控制信号SN及第二控制信号EM。源极驱动器15通过数据线DATA[1]至DATA[M],将数据提供给M行像素单元中的一所选像素。此外,数据线DATA[1]至DATA[M]中的每一条线通过一开关SW而选择性地与一对应电流槽I0耦接。再者,电源驱动器16在供应电压VDD及VSS的电轨中提供一供应电压至上述主动区域12。在一实施例中,供应电压VDD(即工作电压)约为5伏特(5V),而供应电压VSS)(即接地电压)约为-5V。
主动区域12中像素单元P的每一者包含三个子像素单元20,其可用以显示红色(R)、绿色(G)及蓝色(B)等颜色,且三者所显示颜色互异。在其他实施例中,例如,在子像素渲染(sub-pixel rendering,SPR)感应器中,子像素单元20的数目不限于三。在本实施例中,三种子像素20是沿着列的方向排列。因此,源极驱动器15的数据线数目为3×M。
图2是根据一实施例,用于在图1所示EL显示器10的电压补偿电路200的电路图。参照图2,电压补偿电路200包含一例示性的子像素单元20、一阻抗负载25、一开关SW以及一电流槽I0。其中,虽然在本实施例中将子像素单元20配置为包含四个晶体管T1至T4与一个电容器Cst的4T1C电路结构。然而,在本发明的其他实施例中,子像素单元不限于4T1C电路结构或任何特定结构,包含任何数目的晶体管或电容器的子像素单元皆属于本公开内容的范围。
在本实施例中,子像素单元20包含一EL装置28、四个晶体管T1至T4及一个电容器Cst。举例来说,EL装置28包含一电流驱动部件,其可包含一有机发光二极管(organiclight emitting diode,OLED)、微LED或量子点LED(quantum dot LED,QLED)。电容器Cst作为储存电容器。晶体管T3作为驱动晶体管,其可根据储存于电容器Cst中的数据来驱动EL装置28。此外,晶体管T1至T4中每一个晶体管可以是n型薄膜晶体管(thin film transistor,TFT)或n型金氧半(metal-oxide-semiconductor,MOS)晶体管。
在例示性的4T1C电路结构中,晶体管T1的栅极耦接于栅极驱动器14,用以从栅极驱动器14接收一对应栅极线上的第一控制信号SN。晶体管T1的漏极耦接于源极驱动器15,用以回应上述第一控制信号SN,以及从源极驱动器15接收一对应数据线上的数据(标记为″DATA″)。此外,晶体管T3的栅极耦接至晶体管T1的源极以及电容器Cst的一第一端。晶体管T3的源极耦接至电容器Cst的一第二端以及耦接至EL装置28的阴极。本发明所属技术领域技术人员当可理解,MOS晶体管的漏极与源极可互换,端视施加至该处的电压位准而定。
此外,晶体管T4的栅极耦接于栅极驱动器14,用以接收一第二控制信号EM。晶体管T4的漏极耦接于电源驱动器16,用以接收一供应电压VDD。晶体管T4的源极耦接至晶体管T3的漏极。再者,晶体管T2的栅极亦耦接于栅极驱动器14,用以接收第一控制信号SN。晶体管T2的源极耦接至晶体管T3的源极,且因此亦连接至电容器Cst的第二端以及EL装置28的阴极。EL装置28的阳极接收另一供应电压VSS。此外,子像素单元20通过晶体管T2的漏极耦接至阻抗负载25。
与例示性子像素单元20相关的阻抗负载25是由寄生电阻器与寄生电容器组成的网络所形成。这些寄生电阻器与电容器可存在于进行子像素单元20布线(routing)时可能涉及的传导层与介电层之中或之间。举例来说,成对的寄生电阻器Ry与寄生电容器Cy(以下简称寄生对)和在N×M的像素单元阵列中的第y个子像素单元相关,其中y是1到N之间的正整数。因此,从晶体管T2的漏极来看,与子像素单元20相关的R1、C1寄生对至RN、CN寄生对彼此并联,而在每一寄生对中,譬如在R1、C1寄生对中,寄生电阻器R1与寄生电容器C1互相串联。可将阻抗负载25简化为一等效电路250(如图3B、4B及5B所示),其是由等效电阻器Rcol与等效电容器Ccol所形成。当已有EL显示器10的布局时,可在设计阶段模拟出等效电阻器Rcol的阻抗值以及等效电容器Ccol的电容值。其中,在本发明的某些实施例中,也可以将寄生电容器Cy视为第一电容器,以及将等效电容器Ccol视为第二电容器,以示区隔。
开关SW是用以选择性地将对应子像素单元20电性连接至对应电流槽(currentsink)I0,或断开对应子像素单元20与对应电流槽I0的电性连接。如此一来,当开关SW关闭时,可建立对应子像素单元20与对应电流槽I0之间的电流槽路径(current sink path)。相反地,当开关SW释放时,会切断对应子像素单元20与对应电流槽I0之间的电流槽路径。于一实施例中,由显示面板上的多个TFT形成这些开关SW,且开关SW位于像素单元阵列外部。于另一实施例中,由和像素单元阵列整合于一IC中的MOS晶体管形成开关SW。
每一电流槽I0提供一恒定电流,亦标记为I0。在某些实施例中,可调整电流I0的强度,以基于制程因素来强化电流槽的效能。
子像素单元20的4T1C电路结构相对简单。此外,位于EL显示器10的像素单元阵列以外的电路可包含多个开关SW及电流槽I0,这些也是相对简单的电路,且有助于主动区域12的设计。事实上,基于上述结构的EL显示器10有助于实现高像素密度(pixel-per-inch,ppi)应用的优点。更有甚者,可在设计阶段预先决定阻抗负载25,并可轻易地实作开关SW与电流槽I0。因此,可以减轻驱动器IC的负担。
图3A、3B及3C绘示根据某些实施例,在第一阶段中,操作图2所示电压补偿电路200的方法。
参照图3A,对于晶体管T1至T4而言,第一至第三控制信号EM、SN及ISW经设定为正缘触发。开关SW可以是一n-型晶体管,其受到第三控制信号ISW所控制。在操作上,于时间点t1,将第一控制信号SN拉至正缘(rising edge),而第二控制信号EM及第三控制信号ISW保持在高逻辑位准。因此,参照图3B,晶体管T1至T4都被开启,且与之相应的开关SW被关闭。由于晶体管T1是开启的,使作为驱动晶体管的晶体管T3的栅极的电压位准(标记为VG)拉至一数据电压Vdata,此数据电压Vdata在时间点t1可作为参考电压Vref。于一实施例中,参考电压Vref约为0V。更进一步,由于开关SW是关闭的,在第一阶段中,所述电路用以通过阻抗负载250来储存电流。电流Ids由供应电压VDD流经晶体管T4、T3、T2、阻抗负载250及开关SW而到达电流槽I0。可将流经晶体管T3的电流Ids表达为下列方程式(1)。

其中k为常数,VGS代表晶体管T3的栅极至源极电压,而Vth3代表晶体管T3的阈值电压。
由于Ids等于I0,可将方程式(1)改写为下列方程式(2)。
I0=k×(VG-VS-Vth3)2=k×(Vov)2 方程式(2)
其中VG代表晶体管T3的栅极电压,VS代表晶体管T3的源极电压,而Vov(被定义为VGS-Vth3)代表晶体管T3的过激电压。图3C绘示在此阶段中,晶体管T3的VG及VS间相对于VDD及VSS的关系。
承上,由于Vov=VG-VS-Vth3且VG=Vref,可将VS改写如下。
VS=VG-Vov-Vth3=Vref-Vov-Vth3 方程式(3)
因此,在第一阶段中,重置VG的电压位准,例如将VG重置为Vref,而VS为Vth3的函数。在晶体管T3的源极建立一补偿电压,即晶体管T3的阈值电压Vth3。
图4A、4B及4C绘示根据某些实施例,在第二阶段中,操作图2所示电压补偿电路200的方法。
参照图4A,在时间点t2,将第二控制信号EM拉至负缘(falling edge)失效,而第一控制信号SN保持在高逻辑位准及第三控制信号ISW亦失效。因此,参照图4B,将晶体管T4关闭(图中以″×″符号标记),而晶体管T1及T2则保持在开启状态,且断开相应的开关SW。由于晶体管T1保持开启,将数据D[y]写入VG,使VG由Vref改变为Vdata,因此,以电容器Cst及等效电容器Ccol的电容值为函数,可将VS表示为以下方程式(4)。
在此方程式中,Cst及Ccol分别代表储存电容器Cst及等效电容器Ccol的电容值。其中,电容值Ccol明显高于Cst,且可能是Cst的数百倍。因此,的数值趋近于0且可忽略不计。此外,VS实质上等于在第一阶段的VS=Vref-Vov-Vth3(如方程式(3)所示)。在第二阶段中,将包含EL装置28的灰阶值的信息,即数据D[y],写入VG。图4C绘示在第二阶段中,驱动晶体管T3的VG及VS间相对于VDD及VSS的关系。应注意到在第二阶段中VGS=Vdata-(Vref-Vov-Vth3)=Vov+Vth3+Vdata-Vref,其大于EL装置28的阈值电压|Vth_EL|。然而,由于晶体管T4是关闭的,没有电流会流过EL装置28。
因此,在第二阶段中,将与所述EL装置28相关的数据储存于电容器Cst中。此外,VS的值可以利用阻抗负载250中的等效电容器Cco1来维持,使其实质上等于在第一阶段的值。
图5A、5B及5C绘示根据某些实施例,在第三阶段中,操作图2所示电压补偿电路200的方法。
参照图5A,在时间点t3,将第二控制信号EM拉至正缘,并使第一控制信号SN失效。因此,参照图5B,晶体管T1及T2被关闭,晶体管T4被打开而产生一正值的电压偏移Vshift。通过电容器Cst的耦接功能,此正值的电压偏移Vshift使VG与VS偏移而到达一电性平衡。分别以下列方程式(5)及方程式(6)来表示VG及VS。

VS=Vref-Vov-Vth3+Vshift 方程式(6)
因此,由于VG及VS都被Vshift拉高,VGS保持不变,且如上文针对第二阶段的操作时所述,VGS大于|Vth_EL|。图5C绘示在第三阶段中晶体管T3的VG及VS间相对于VDD及VSS的关系。随着第二控制信号EM生效,电流Iel由VDD通过晶体管T4、T3及EL装置28而流向VSS,使得EL装置28根据所述数据DATA发出光线。电流Iel可表示为以下方程式(7)。

由于方程式(7)中的电流Iel不含任何Vth参数,可提升EL显示器10的显示品质。
因此,在第三阶段中,等效电容器Ccol协助VG及VS达到电性平衡,且可维持VGS使其和在第二阶段的数值相同。
图6A是根据另一实施例,用于在图1所示的显示器10中进行电压补偿的电压补偿电路600的电路图。
参照图6A,电压补偿电路600与上文参照图2所述的电压补偿电路200相似,不同之处在于例如例示性子像素单元60中的晶体管T1至T4以p型TFT或P型金氧半晶体管(PMOS)取代图2的子像素单元20的n型TFT或NMOS。此外,相似地,可将阻抗负载25简化为图6B所示的等效负载250。
在例示性的4T1C电路结构中,子像素单元60的晶体管T1的栅极耦接至栅极驱动器14,用以接收来自栅极驱动器14位于对应栅极线上的第一控制信号SN。晶体管T1的源极耦接于源极驱动器15,用以回应第一控制信号SN,以及接收来自源极驱动器15位于对应数据线上的数据DATA。此外,晶体管T3的栅极耦接至晶体管T1的漏极并耦接至电容器Cst的第一端。晶体管T3的源极耦接至电容器Cst的第二端并耦接至EL装置28的阳极。
此外,晶体管栅极T4的栅极耦接于栅极驱动器14,用以接收第二控制信号EM。晶体管T4的漏极耦接于电源驱动器16,用以接收供应电压VSS。晶体管T4的源极耦接至晶体管T3的漏极。更进一步,晶体管T2的栅极亦耦接于栅极驱动器14,用以接收第一控制信号SN。晶体管T2的漏极耦接至晶体管T3的源极,并因而耦接至电容器Cst的第二端以及EL装置28的阳极。EL装置28的阴极接收另一供应电压VDD。此外,子像素单元20通过晶体管T2的源极耦接至阻抗负载25。
图6C为根据某些实施例,用以操作图6A所示电路的第一至第三控制信号EM、SN及ISW的时序图。
参照图6C,第一至第三控制信号EM、SN及ISW与上文参照图3A、4A或5A所述者相似,不同之处例如在于,图6C的第一至第三控制信号EM、SN及ISW基于子像素单元60中的晶体管T1至T4为负缘触发,或在负缘生效。如图6B所示,电流Iel′由VDD流经EL装置28及晶体管T3、T4而到达VSS,使得EL装置28可根据所述数据DATA而发出光线。可将电流Iel′表示为以下方程式(8)。

由于方程式(8)中的电流Iel’不含任何Vth参数,可提升EL显示器10的显示品质。
图7为一流程图,绘示在电致发光显示器中进行电压补偿的方法。
参照图7,在操作71,提供一电致发光(EL)显示器。所述EL显示器包含一像素单元阵列,其中每一像素单元包含多个子像素单元,且每一子像素单元分别包含EL装置、晶体管及第一电容器。
接着,在操作73,通过与子像素单元相对应的阻抗负载,将子像素单元选择性地连接至电流槽。
在操作75,于第一阶段中,将晶体管栅极的电压位准重置为参考电压。
在操作76,于第一阶段中,在晶体管的一终端建立与晶体管的阈值电压相关联的补偿电压。
在操作77,于第二阶段中,将与所述EL装置相关的数据储存于第一电容器中。此外,利用阻抗负载中的第二电容器保持晶体管的终端的电压位准,使其实质上与第一阶段中的值相同。同时,利用等效电容器协助晶体管的栅极的电压位准与终端的电压位准达到电性平衡,并保持晶体管的源极电压使其与第二阶段中的值相同。
其后,在操作78,使电流通过晶体管而流经所述EL装置。上述电流的强度与所述晶体管的阈值电压无关。

Claims (19)

1.一种电致发光显示器的电压补偿电路,包含:
一子像素单元,该子像素单元包含:
一电致发光装置;
一第一电容器,耦接于该电致发光装置,用以储存与该电致发光装置相关联的一数据;以及
一晶体管,包含一栅极,耦接至该第一电容器的一第一端,以及一终端,耦接至该电容器的一第二端;
一阻抗负载,耦接于该子像素单元,该阻抗负载包含一第二电容器,其电容值高于该第一电容器的电容值;以及
一开关,选择性地耦接于该阻抗负载或断开,将该子像素单元耦接至相应的一电流槽或与该电流槽断开。
2.如权利要求1所述的电路,其中该子像素单元还包含另一晶体管,用以在一第一阶段中,重置该晶体管的该栅极的一电压位准。
3.如权利要求2所述的电路,其中该另一晶体管还用以在一第二阶段中,接收与该EL装置相关联的一数据。
4.如权利要求3所述的电路,其中该第二电容器用以在该第二阶段中,保持该晶体管的该终端的一电压位准,该电压位准等于该终端在该第一阶段中的电压位准。
5.如权利要求3所述的电路,其中该子像素单元还包含又一晶体管,分别耦接于该晶体管与一供应电压,该又一晶体管用以于一第三阶段中,使一电流流经该电致发光装置。
6.如权利要求5所述的电路,其中该第二电容器用以在该第三阶段中,保持该晶体管的该栅极与该终端间的一电压差异,该电压差异等于其于该第二阶段中的电压差异。
7.如权利要求5所述的电路,其中该电流的强度与该晶体管的阈值电压无关。
8.如权利要求2所述的电路,其中该子像素单元还包含又一晶体管,分别耦接于该晶体管与该阻抗负载,用以在该第一阶段中,于该晶体管的该终端建立与该晶体管的阈值电压相关的补偿电压。
9.一种电致发光显示器,包含:
多个像素单元,呈矩阵排列,且每一该像素单元包含多个子像素单元;以及
一电压补偿电路,包含:
该等子像素单元,每一该子像素单元包含:
一电致发光装置;
一第一电容器,耦接于该电致发光装置,用以储存与该电致发光装置相关联的一数据;以及
一晶体管,包含一栅极,耦接至该第一电容器的一第一端,以及一终端,耦接至该电容器的一第二端;
一阻抗负载,耦接于该子像素单元,该阻抗负载包含一第二电容器,其电容值高于该第一电容器的电容值;以及
一开关,选择性地耦接于该阻抗负载或断开,将该子像素单元耦接至相应的一电流槽或与该电流槽断开。
10.如权利要求9所述的电致发光显示器,其中该子像素单元还包含一晶体管,用以在一第一阶段中,重置该晶体管的该栅极的一电压位准。
11.如权利要求10所述的电致发光显示器,其中该晶体管用以在一第二阶段中,接收与该电致发光装置相关联的一数据。
12.如权利要求11所述的电致发光显示器,其中该第二电容器用以在该第二阶段中,保持该晶体管的该第一终端的一电压位准,使其实质上等于其在该第一阶段中的电压位准。
13.如权利要求11所述的电致发光显示器,其中该子像素单元还包含另一晶体管,用以于一第三阶段中,使一电流流经该电致发光装置。
14.如权利要求13所述的电致发光显示器,其中该第二电容器用以在该第三阶段中,保持该晶体管的该栅极与该第一终端间的一电压差异,使其实质上等于该第二阶段中的电压差异。
15.如权利要求13所述的电致发光显示器,其中该电流的强度与该晶体管的该阈值电压无关。
16.如权利要求10所述的电致发光显示器,其中该子像素单元还包含另一晶体管,用以在该第一阶段中,于该晶体管的该第一终端建立与该晶体管的一阈值电压相关的补偿电压。
17.如权利要求16所述的电致发光显示器,其中该另一晶体管包含一终端,且该开关用以通过该阻抗负载将该终端选择性地连接至该电流槽。
18.如权利要求17所述的电致发光显示器,还包含又一晶体管,用以回应该第一控制信号以重置该晶体管的该栅极的一电压位准。
19.一种于一电致发光显示器中进行电压补偿的方法,该电致发光显示器包含一像素单元阵列,每一像素单元包含一EL装置、晶体管及一第一电容器,该方法包含:
提供一开关,以通过与一像素单元相关联的一阻抗负载将该一像素单元选择性地连接至一电流槽;
将该晶体管一栅极的电压位准重置为一参考电压;
在该晶体管的一第一终端建立与该晶体管的一阈值电压相关联的一补偿电压;
将与该EL装置相关联的数据储存于该第一电容器中,并利用该阻抗负载中的第二电容器保持该第一终端的一电压位准;以及
使一电流通过该晶体管流经该EL装置,该电流的强度与该晶体管的该阈值电压无关。
