The present invention relates to an apparatus making it possible to supply an internal combustion engine at will with gasoline or combustible gas.
In existing installations for supplying a combustion engine with gas, the latter is made to be mixed with air by a simple venturi and a flow tube.
The apparatus object of the present invention, making it possible to supply an internal combustion engine at will with gasoline or with fuel gas, is characterized in that it comprises a vacuum chamber acting by means of a piston or d '' a flexible membrane on a valve carrying a gas flow calibration needle, the valve being able to be kept fully open by a rod controlled by a linkage acting on the gasoline and gas valves, a tube, serving as a supply gas valve and needle valve seat, being held by an adjusting nut and a spring, and by the fact that a single pull-tab simultaneously controls the gasoline and gas valves, positioning one open and the other closed or vice versa and control, by a linkage. the rod locking the plug.
This device is also intended to remedy certain operating faults in gas-powered engines, the main ones being:
a) progression during sudden acceleration:
b) risk of backfire:
c) impossibility of adjustments.
This device operates in series with an existing commercially available pressure regulator: Beam 400A or Fiorentini.
It is installed between the original carburetor and the air filter fitted to the engine.
The appended drawings show by way of examples an embodiment of the apparatus which is the subject of the invention as well as a diagram of installation on an automobile.
Fig. 1 shows a cross-sectional view of the apparatus which comprises a main body (1) in which a plug (3) integral with a piston, slides vertically in a vacuum bell (2). On said plug is fixed a conical needle (4) serving as a calibrator for the gas flow. A gas supply tube serving as a seat for the needle (5) held in the lower body of the device and adjustable by the nut (11) and its return spring. The valve (3) when the engine is running on gasoline is held in the fully open position, i.e. the highest by a lifting rod (7) secured to the gas and gasoline inlet valves by a Linkage operated by a pull tab on the automobile dashboard. Gas is supplied to the appliance through the orifice (6).
Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal sectional view of the device, the arrows of which represent the direction of flow of the air flow. The vacuum created by the engine suction and existing between the carburetor throttle (not shown) and the valve (3) causes a vacuum in the bell (2) through the channel (9). A compensation channel located under the piston and at the inlet (10) of the device allows the latter to move vertically through the vacuum.
The depression existing under the bushel is increased by the venturi shape of the body of the device. The opening progression of the valve and its adjustment needle is regulated by an oil bath damper (8), the braking piston of which is integral with the filler cap (12).
Fig. 3 shows schematically the assembly of the device on an automobile of which we find in B the gasoline tank, in G the gas bottle which by a pipe is brought to the pressure reducer (15) and by a valve (17) to the apparatus. In (18) is shown the fuel valve which by a linkage is secured to the gas valve (17) and the lever (20) coupled to the lifting rod of the valve of the device. In (16) is shown the carburetor and its butterfly. Alternating operation with gas or petrol is simplified by a single pull-tab.
When operating on gas. the fuel tap (18) is in the closed position while the gas tap is in the open position (17); the linkage (20) then releases the plug (3) in its operating position shown in FIG. 2.
When operating with gasoline, the gasoline tap (18) is in the open position while, conversely, the valve is positioned closed (17) and the linkage (20) by means of the rod (7) lifts the plug thus freeing the passage of the supply air flow to the carburetor.
