Definitions
- the present invention relates to a spark plug used for an internal combustion engine.
- a spark plug used in an internal combustion engine such as an automobile engine includes, for example, a central electrode extending in the axial direction, an insulator provided outside the center electrode, a cylindrical metal shell provided outside the insulator, and a base. And a ground electrode joined to the tip of the metal shell. In addition, the ground electrode is bent back so that the tip of the ground electrode faces the tip of the center electrode, whereby a spark discharge gap is formed between the tip of the center electrode and the tip of the ground electrode. .
- a noble metal tip having a relatively small volume in the portion of the ground electrode where the spark discharge gap is formed, it is possible to suppress that the heat of the flame core is drawn from the ground electrode (extinguishing action), Techniques for improving ignitability are known.
- the portion excluding the tip portion of the ground electrode is not tapered, that is, the bent portion and the base portion of the ground electrode are relatively wide. It is in a state. Therefore, as in the case of the ground electrode formed so as to have substantially the same width, an abnormal spark discharge is likely to occur between the bent portion of the ground electrode and the center electrode, and the ignitability is improved. There is a risk that it will not be fully utilized.
- the tip of the ground electrode is tilted toward the tip of the center electrode, and the corner of the tip of the ground electrode is opposed to the tip of the center electrode, so that the tip of the ground electrode.
- a technique for easily generating spark discharge spark discharge at a normal position
- ignitability see, for example, Patent Document 2.
- the ignitability can be improved, but local wear is caused at the tip corner portion of the ground electrode and the portion of the center electrode facing the tip corner portion of the ground electrode. Is likely to progress. Therefore, the spark discharge gap is rapidly expanded, and there is a possibility that normal spark discharge cannot be performed at a relatively early stage.
- the present invention has been made in view of the above circumstances, and its purpose is to achieve a long life while improving ignitability in a spark plug configured without providing a noble metal tip on the ground electrode, and
- An object of the present invention is to provide a spark plug for an internal combustion engine that can secure a sufficient strength of a ground electrode.

- the part between the part and the narrow part is a wide part wider than the narrow part, When viewed from the distal end side in the axial direction, the base end of the narrow portion is closer to the root side of the ground electrode than the distal end surface of the center electrode, and The base end of the narrow part is characterized in that it is closer to the tip end side in the axial direction than the center of the gap.
- the distal end portion of the ground electrode (the portion facing the distal end surface of the center electrode) is a narrow portion having a narrower width than the proximal end portion side. For this reason, it can suppress that the heat
- the width of the narrow portion is set to be smaller than the outer diameter of the front end surface of the center electrode. For this reason, since the electric field strength is relatively high and spark discharge is likely to occur at the edge portion, the edge portion formed on the center electrode side (side edge portion) among the narrow edge portion and the tip edge portion of the center electrode , That is, spark discharge is likely to occur at a position not covered by the ground electrode. Therefore, coupled with the fact that the tip of the ground electrode is formed narrow, it is possible to effectively suppress the inhibition of the growth of the flame kernel by the ground electrode, and to further improve the ignitability. Can do.
- the width of the narrow portion when the width of the narrow portion is set larger than the outer diameter of the tip surface of the center electrode, the distance from the side edge portion of the narrow portion depends on each part of the tip edge portion of the center electrode. There is a possibility that spark discharge is concentrated in a portion of the tip edge portion where the distance from the side edge portion is relatively small.
- the width of the narrow portion is made smaller than the outer diameter of the front end surface of the center electrode, the side edge of the narrow portion is formed for each portion of the front end edge portion of the center electrode. It can prevent that a big difference arises in the distance between parts. As a result, each part of the center electrode can be consumed almost evenly, and the life can be extended.

Has been. As a result, it is possible to more reliably prevent flame nucleus growth inhibition by the ground electrode, and to further improve ignitability.
- the portion where the distance is relatively small between the inner edge portion of the center electrode and the narrow portion when the distance between the inner edge portion of the center electrode and the side edge portion of the narrow portion is relatively large, the portion where the distance is relatively small between the inner edge portion of the center electrode and the narrow portion. That is, in the narrow portion, the central portion of the facing surface facing the tip surface of the center electrode (the portion located at the center of the facing surface when viewed from the tip surface side of the ground electrode) or in the vicinity thereof Spark discharge tends to occur. Therefore, the growth of flame nuclei is likely to be hindered by the ground electrode, and there is a possibility that the ignitability cannot be sufficiently improved.

- the tip of the narrow portion when viewed from the tip end side in the axial direction, the tip of the narrow portion is configured to protrude from a portion of the tip end surface of the center electrode that is farthest from the root of the ground electrode. Even so, the size along the central axis of the narrow portion of the protruding amount is 0.5 mm or less. Therefore, the inhibition of the spread of the flame kernel by the ground electrode can be more reliably suppressed, and the ignitability can be further improved. On the other hand, even when the tip of the narrow portion is configured to be retracted from a portion of the tip surface of the center electrode that is farthest from the root of the ground electrode when viewed from the tip side in the axial direction.
- the size along the central axis of the narrow portion of the retraction amount is set to 0.4 mm or less. For this reason, it is possible to easily generate a spark discharge between the tip of the ground electrode (narrow part) and the portion of the tip surface of the center electrode that is farthest from the root of the ground electrode. Can be consumed evenly. That is, by setting ⁇ 0.4 mm ⁇ E ⁇ + 0.5 mm, it is possible to further improve the ignitability and durability.

- the arrival angle was plotted with black triangles, and the 20% variation rate arrival angle of the sample with the outer diameter of the center electrode being 2.1 mm was plotted with black circles.
- the base end distance and the tip end distance were set to 0.3 mm.
- each sample had different outer diameters of the center electrode, but the value (F / G) obtained by dividing the inner edge portion distance by the gap distance was set to 1.25 or less (that is, , F ⁇ 1.25G), it was revealed that the ignitability is dramatically improved. This is because the value obtained by dividing the inner edge distance by the gap distance is 1.25 or less, the width of the narrow portion becomes sufficiently small, and the inhibition of the growth of the flame kernel by the ground electrode is effectively suppressed. It is thought that it was due to that.
- each sample was subjected to a spark discharge for 100 hours at a discharge interval of 60 Hz (rate of 60 times per second). After the discharge was completed, the amount of electrode consumption at a predetermined measurement target position was measured. As shown in FIG.

- the electrode consumption was determined by measuring the consumption along the axial direction of the tip surface of the center electrode of the sample after the test with respect to the tip surface of the center electrode of the sample before the test.
- FIG. 7 shows a graph representing the amount of electrode consumption at each measurement target position for each sample. Table 1 shows a value (a consumption difference) obtained by subtracting the minimum value from the maximum value of the electrode consumption amount at each measurement target position for each sample.
- the electrode consumption of the sample with “FH” set to ⁇ 0.1 mm is shown by a white square, and the electrode consumption of the sample with “FH” set to 0 mm is shown by a black diamond.
- the electrode consumption of the sample with “FH” of 0.1 mm is indicated by a black triangle
- the electrode consumption of the sample with “FH” of 0.2 mm is indicated by a black circle
- “FH” is indicated by
- the electrode consumption of the sample with 0.3 mm is shown by a black square
- the electrode consumption of the sample with “FH” of 0.4 mm is shown by a white triangle.
- the wear difference is 0.1 mm or less, and the amount of electrode wear is reduced at each part of the tip edge portion. It has been found that the variation in the number is very small, that is, uneven wear can be effectively suppressed. This is because the variation in the distance between each portion of the front edge portion of the center electrode and the side edge portion of the narrow portion is made relatively small, so that the number of times almost equal in each portion of the front edge portion. This is probably due to the occurrence of spark discharge.
- FIG. 8 shows a graph showing the relationship between the base end distance and the variation rate 20% arrival angle.
- the base end distance is 0 mm or more, that is, the base end of the narrow portion is closer to the base side of the ground electrode than the front end surface of the center electrode when viewed from the front end side in the axial direction.
- the angle of arrival at a variation rate of 20% exceeded 50 ° BTDC, and it became clear that excellent ignitability could be realized. This is because, of the ground electrode, at least the portion facing the center electrode is formed narrow, so that the heat of the flame kernel generated by the spark discharge is drawn by the ground electrode, and the growth of the flame kernel It is considered that (propagation) is effectively suppressed from being inhibited by the ground electrode.
- the base end distance is preferably 0.3 mm or more in order to improve the ignitability, but from the viewpoint of sufficiently ensuring the strength of the bent portion of the ground electrode. It is necessary to configure the base end portion of the narrow portion so that it is located on the tip end side in the axial direction from the center of the spark discharge gap. Therefore, it can be said that the proximal distance needs to be set within a range that satisfies this condition.
- FIG. 9 shows a graph showing the relationship between the tip distance and the 20% variation rate arrival angle
- FIG. 10 shows a graph showing the relationship between the tip distance and the electrode consumption at the farthest edge.
- the outer diameter of the center electrode is 1.7 mm
- the value obtained by subtracting the outer edge distance from the inner edge distance (FH) is 0 mm
- the rear end distance is 0.3 mm.
- the value obtained by dividing the inner edge distance by the gap distance is 1.25 or less, that is, E ⁇ 1.25G, from the viewpoint of improving the ignitability.
- the proximal distance D is preferably 0 mm or more (more preferably 0.3 mm or more), or the distal distance E is preferably +0.5 mm or less.
- the value obtained by subtracting the outer edge distance from the inner edge distance (FH) is set to 0 mm to 0.3 mm, and the tip distance E is set to -0.4 mm or more. It can be said that it is preferable.
- the front end surface 5F of the center electrode 5 is formed flat, and spark discharge occurs between the nearest edge portion NE or the farthest edge portion FE of the center electrode 5 and the ground electrode 27.
- the propagation of the flame generated between the nearest edge portion NE and the farthest edge portion FE is slightly disturbed by the ground electrode 27. Therefore, as shown in FIGS. 11 (a) and 11 (b), notches 53 and 54 are provided in portions corresponding to the nearest edge portion NE and the farthest edge portion FE of the front end surface 5F of the center electrode 5, As shown in FIGS.
- the ground electrode 27 inhibits the propagation of flame by providing grooves 55 and 56 that pass through portions corresponding to the nearest edge portion NE and the farthest edge portion FE. It is good also as suppressing generation
- the corner formed between the notches 53 and 54 and the grooves 55 and 56 and the front end surface 5F of the center electrode 5 is chamfered, or the corner is processed into a curved shape. It is good as well. In this case, the occurrence of spark discharge between the corner portion and the ground electrode 27 can be suppressed, and the flame propagation property can be further improved.
- the facing surface 42C facing the tip surface 5F of the center electrode 5 is formed flat, but as shown in FIG.
- FIG. In this case, it is possible to suppress the occurrence of spark discharge between the center electrode 5 and the central portion of the narrow portion 42, that is, in a portion where the propagation of flame is likely to be slightly hindered by the ground electrode 27, and the ignitability. Can be further improved.
- a chamfering process is given like said (a), or it processes into a curved surface shape. It is good.
- the ground electrode 27 has a rectangular cross section, but the ground electrode 57 is opposed to the front end surface 5F of the center electrode 5 as shown in FIG.
- the side surface adjacent to the opposing surface 57C may be configured to have a semicircular cross section formed in a curved surface shape so as to bulge outward.
- the ground electrode 67 may be formed in a curved surface shape that bulges outward at least on the back surface of the facing surface 67C facing the tip surface 5F of the center electrode 5. . In this case, even when the air-fuel mixture is supplied from the back side of the ground electrodes 57 and 67, the air-fuel mixture can easily flow into the spark discharge gap 33, and the ignitability can be further improved. Improvements can be made.
- the spark discharge gap 33 is formed between the front end surface 5F of the center electrode 5 and the ground electrode 27 (narrow portion 42), but a Pt alloy or Ir is formed at the end of the center electrode 5.
- a noble metal tip made of an alloy or the like may be provided, and the spark discharge gap 33 may be formed between the noble metal tip and the ground electrode 27 (the narrow portion 42). In this case, the durability can be further improved.
- the ground electrode 27 has a two-layer structure including the outer layer 27A and the inner layer 27B, but the configuration of the ground electrode 27 is not limited to this. Therefore, the ground electrode 27 may be configured by omitting the inner layer 27B, for example, or may have a three-layer structure or a multilayer structure of four or more layers.
- the ground electrode 27 is joined to the distal end surface of the distal end portion 26 of the metal shell 3 .
- the present invention can also be applied to the case where the ground electrode is formed by cutting out a part of a certain tip metal fitting (for example, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. 2006-236906).
- the ground electrode 27 may be joined to the side surface of the distal end portion 26 of the metal shell 3.
- the tool engaging portion 19 has a hexagonal cross section, but the shape of the tool engaging portion 19 is not limited to such a shape.
- it may be a Bi-HEX (deformed 12-angle) shape [ISO 22777: 2005 (E)].
